Abstract

Agricultural image recognition tasks are becoming increasingly dependent on deep learning (DL); however, despite the excellent performance of DL, it is difficult to comprehend the type of logic or features of the input image it uses during decision making. Knowing the logic or features is highly crucial for result verification, algorithm improvement, training data improvement, and knowledge extraction. However, the explanations from the current heatmap-based algorithms are insufficient for the abovementioned requirements. To address this, this paper details the development of a classification and explanation method based on a variational autoencoder (VAE) architecture, which can visualize the variations of the most important features by visualizing the generated images that correspond to the variations of those features. Using the PlantVillage dataset, an acceptable level of explainability was achieved without sacrificing the classification accuracy. The proposed method can also be extended to other crops as well as other image classification tasks. Further, application systems using this method for disease identification tasks, such as the identification of potato blackleg disease, potato virus Y, and other image classification tasks, are currently being developed., Comment: 55 pages, 24 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

In the field of chemistry, there have been many attempts to predict the properties of unknown compounds from statistical models constructed using machine learning. In an area where many known compounds are present (the interpolation area), an accurate model can be constructed. In contrast, data in areas where there are no known compounds (the extrapolation area) are generally difficult to predict. However, in the development of new materials, it is desirable to search this extrapolation area and discover compounds with unprecedented physical properties. In this paper, we propose Stochastic Threshold Model Trees (STMT), an extrapolation method that reflects the trend of the data, while maintaining the accuracy of conventional interpolation methods. The behavior of STMT is confirmed through experiments using both artificial and real data. In the case of the real data, although there is no significant overall improvement in accuracy, there is one compound for which the prediction accuracy is notably improved, suggesting that STMT reflects the data trends in the extrapolation area. Abstract

Abstract Background Pregnancy in patients with Parkinson disease is a rare occurrence. To the best of our knowledge, the effect of pregnancy as well as treatment in genetically confirmed autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism (ARJP) has never been reported. Here, we report the first case of pregnancy in a patient with ARJP associated with a parkin gene mutation, ARJP/PARK2. Case presentation A 27-year-old woman with ARJP/PARK2 was diagnosed as having a spontaneous dichorionic/diamniotic twin pregnancy. Exacerbation of motor disability was noted between ovulation and menstruation before pregnancy as well as during late pregnancy, suggesting that her parkinsonism might have been influenced by fluctuations in the levels of endogenous sex hormones. During the organogenesis period, she was only treated with levodopa/carbidopa, although she continued to receive inpatient hospital care for assistance in the activities of daily living. After the organogenesis period, she was administered sufficient amounts of antiparkinsonian drugs. She delivered healthy male twins, and psychomotor development of both the babies was normal at the age of 2 years. Conclusion Pregnancy may worsen the symptoms of ARJP/PARK2, although appropriate treatments with antiparkinsonian drugs and adequate assistance in the activities of daily living might enable successful pregnancy and birth of healthy children.

Abstract

Abstract Background Genetic polymorphisms of DNA repair enzymes may lead to genetic instability and colorectal cancer carcinogenesis. Our objective was to measure the interactions between polymorphisms of repair genes and tobacco smoking in colorectal cancer. Methods The case-control study involved sixty-eight colorectal cancer patients and 121 non-cancer controls divided into non-smokers and smokers according to pack-years of smoking. The genetic polymorphisms of DNA repair enzymes,OGG1 Ser326Cys, MUTYH Gln324His, APEX1 Asp148Glu and XRCC1 Arg399Gln, were examined using PCR-RFLP. Results The MUTYH Gln324His showed strong significant associations with a risk of colorectal cancer (crude odds ratio [OR] 3.30, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 1.44–7.60, p = 0.005; adjusted OR3.53, 95%CI 1.44–8.70, p = 0.006). The ORs for the APEX1 Asp148Glu were statistically significant (crude OR 2.69, 95%CI 1.45–4.99, p = 0.002; adjusted OR 2.33, 95%CI 1.21–4.48, p = 0.011). The ORs for the MUTYH Gln324His and the APEX1 Asp148Glu were statistically significant for colon cancer (adjusted OR 3.95, 95%CI 1.28–12.20, p = 0.017 for MUTYH Gln324His ; adjusted OR 3.04, 95%CI 1.38–6.71, p = 0.006 for APEX1 Asp148Glu). The joint effect of tobacco exposure and the MUTYH Gln324His showed a significant association with colorectal cancer risk in non-smokers (adjusted OR 4.08, 95%CI 1.22–13.58, p = 0.022) and the APEX1 Asp148Glu was significantly increased in smokers (adjusted OR 5.02, 95%CI 1.80–13.99, p = 0.002). However, the distributions of OGG1 Ser326Cys and XRCC1 Arg399Gln were not associated with a colorectal cancer risk. Conclusion Our findings suggest that the MUTYH Gln324His and the APEX1 Asp148Glu constitutes an increased risk of colorectal cancer, especially colon cancer. The MUTYH Gln324His is strongly associated with colorectal cancer susceptibility in never smoking history, whereas the APEX1 Asp148Glu genotype constitutes an increased risk of colorectal cancer when accompanied by smoking exposure.
