Background: Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) reduces the incidence of stroke/bleeding events in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, high risk of stroke, and contraindication in continuing anticoagulation therapy. Of them, patients with heart failure may remain at high risk of these events after LAAC. Method: Patients who underwent LAAC and were listed for the multi-center, prospectively collected OCEAN-LAAC registry, were eligible. Of them, individuals without baseline plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and those dependent on hemodialysis were excluded. The prognostic impact of baseline plasma BNP levels on the incidence of death or stroke/bleeding events after LAAC was evaluated. Results: A total of 937 patients (median 78 years, 596 men) were included. The LAAC device was successfully implanted in 934 (98%) patients. Over the 366 (251, 436) days after the LAAC, 148 patients encountered a primary outcome. The common logarithm of baseline plasma BNP was independently associated with the primary outcome with an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.46 (95% confidence interval 1.06–2.18, p = 0.043). A calculated cutoff of 2.12 (equivalent to 133 pg/mL of plasma BNP level) significantly stratified the cumulative incidence of the primary outcome (29% vs. 21% for 2 years, p = 0.004). Conclusions: Using prospectively collected large-scale multi-center Japanese registry data, we demonstrated that a baseline higher plasma BNP level was independently associated with a higher incidence of stroke/bleeding events and mortality after LAAC. Further studies are warranted to understand the optimal therapeutic strategy for LAAC candidates with elevated baseline plasma BNP levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanical degradation (erosion) of plastics in the marine environment has been reported in many literature studies but without quantitative information. This type of degradation is crucial as it accounts for most of the initial microplastic products, in marine environments (e.g., rivers and oceans). Here, we quantify the erosion of plastics by water-borne sediments under typical perpendicular water velocities and sand loads of turbid rivers and coastal oceans. Polypropylene (PP) shows the highest response to water-borne erosion, with a surface degradation rate of 5160 μm per year (4.44 mg per mm2 per year), compared with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a degradation rate of 1874 μm per year (1.79 mg per mm2 per year), resulting in the formation of microplastics (MPs). The rate of formation of such microplastic particles (>10 μm), as characterised by a laser direct infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging system, amounts to 669 particles per mm2 per year for PP and 187 particles per mm2 per year for HDPE, exhibiting average particle sizes of 60 μm and 23 μm in the same order. Furthermore, surface microscopy provided valuable insights into the dominant erosion mechanisms, revealing three distinct zones and the surface features reveal the brittle erosion behaviours. These results will enable a better assessment of degradation and lifetime prediction of plastics in turbid rivers and coastal oceans, allowing precise estimation of the rate of formation of MPs. All around the world, the constructed wetland is a variation for for reusing treated water by irrigation the landscaping. Based on the synthesis and metabolism of different plant species, nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, in wastewater has been removed. Therefore, the article evaluates the ability of reusing municipal treated water from combined sewerage system for technology constructed wetland. Based on building and operating model wetland in municipal wastewater treatment plant for 2 months, adaptability of 2 selected plant species in model include Canna generalis and Portulaca grandiflora has been determined. At first, the experiment evaluates of the growth and development of plants. After that, based on operated model with with hydraulic rention time was 48 hours and hydraulic loading rate is approximately 0.2 m3/m2/d, the efficiency transformation of Nitrogen in range 30 – 40% with Canna generalis and 20 – 30% with Portulaca grandiflora. Moreover, the preformance removing ortho phosphorus of both models in range 40 – 60%. Sumerize, the synthesis and metabolism of nutrients by these plants will reduce the loading of biological reactor in wastewater treatment plants.
