The Strahler number was originally proposed to characterize the complexity of river bifurcation and has found various applications. This article proposes computation of the Strahler number's upper and lower limits for natural language sentence tree structures. Through empirical measurements across grammatically annotated data, the Strahler number of natural language sentences is shown to be almost 3 or 4, similarly to the case of river bifurcation as reported by Strahler (1957). From the theory behind the number, we show that it is one kind of lower limit on the amount of memory required to process sentences. We consider the Strahler number to provide reasoning that explains reports showing that the number of required memory areas to process sentences is 3 to 4 for parsing (Schuler et al., 2010), and reports indicating a psychological "magical number" of 3 to 5 (Cowan, 2001). An analytical and empirical analysis shows that the Strahler number is not constant but grows logarithmically; therefore, the Strahler number of sentences derives from the range of sentence lengths. In the daily operation of liquefied petroleum gas service, gas providers visit customers and replace cylinders if the gas is about to run out. For a long time, frequent visits to customers were required because they could not determine the amount of remaining gas without a staff visit and observation. To solve this problem, smart meters are started to be employed to acquire gas consumption more frequently without visiting customers. In this study, we construct a system to optimize plans for cylinder replacement, and evaluate it with a large-scale field test. We propose an algorithm to create a replacement plan with three steps: estimating the replacement date, acquiring the customer list for replacement, and determining the delivery route. A more accurate estimation of the replacement date can be acquired with a smart meter, which is used for making a customer list for replacement. The formulation for making a customer list enables the gas provider to replace cylinders some days before the date when the gas would run out. It can suppress the concentration of replacements on certain days. Large-scale verification experiments were performed with more than 1,000 customers in Chiba prefecture in Japan. In the field test, the gas provider incorporated the system into its replacement operations. Moreover, the replacement plans developed by the proposed system were compared with that by the gas provider. Our system reduced the number of gas cylinders with gas shortage, the number of visits without replacement due to plenty of gas remaining, and the working duration per customer, which shows that our system benefits both gas providers and customers., Comment: 25 pages

Many social phenomena are triggered by public opinion that is formed in the process of opinion exchange among individuals. To date, from the engineering point of view, a large body of work has been devoted to studying how to manipulate individual opinions so as to guide public opinion towards the desired state. Recently, Abebe et al. (KDD 2018) have initiated the study of the impact of interventions at the level of susceptibility rather than the interventions that directly modify individual opinions themselves. For the model, Chan et al. (The Web Conference 2019) designed a local search algorithm to find an optimal solution in polynomial time. However, it can be seen that the solution obtained by solving the above model might not be implemented in real-world scenarios. In fact, as we do not consider the amount of changes of the susceptibility, it would be too costly to change the susceptibility values for agents based on the solution. In this paper, we study an opinion optimization model that is able to limit the amount of changes of the susceptibility in various forms. First we introduce a novel opinion optimization model, where the initial susceptibility values are given as additional input and the feasible region is defined using the $\ell_p$-ball centered at the initial susceptibility vector. For the proposed model, we design a projected gradient method that is applicable to the case where there are millions of agents. Finally we conduct thorough experiments using a variety of real-world social networks and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms baseline methods., Comment: CIKM 2021

An array of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice (Mott insulator) excited to a state where single electron wave-functions spatially overlap would represent a new and ideal platform to simulate exotic electronic many-body phenomena in the condensed phase. However, this highly excited non-equilibrium system is expected to be so short-lived that it has eluded observation so far. Here, we demonstrate the first step toward its realization by exciting high-lying electronic (Rydberg) states of the atomic Mott insulator with a coherent ultrashort laser pulse. Beyond a threshold principal quantum number where Rydberg orbitals of neighboring lattice sites overlap with each other, the atoms efficiently undergo spontaneous Penning ionization resulting in a drastic change of ion-counting statistics, sharp increase of avalanche ionization and the formation of an ultracold plasma. These observations signal the actual creation of exotic electronic states with overlapping wave functions, which is further confirmed by a significant difference in ionization dynamics between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a Mott insulator.

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a gas of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms subject to a time-domain Ramsey interferometry protocol. The many-body dynamics is governed by an Ising-type Hamiltonian with long range interactions of tunable strength. We analyze and model the contrast degradation and phase accumulation of the Ramsey signal and identify scaling laws for varying interrogation times, ensemble densities, and ensemble dimensionalities., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

The dispersion cancellation observed in Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between frequency-entangled photon pairs has been the basis of quantum optical coherence tomography and quantum clock synchronization. Here we explore the effect of phase dispersion on ultranarrow HOM dips. We show that the higher-order dispersion, the line width of the pump laser, and the spectral shape of the parametric fluorescence have a strong effect on the dispersion cancellation in the high-resolution regime with several experimental verifications. Perfect dispersion cancellation with a linewidth of 3\mu m is also demonstrated through 25 mm of water., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures
