Abstract

An original hybrid data assimilation scheme recently developed is presented and tested. The scheme is based on the application of the theory of diffusion random processes. It is applied here in conjunction with the Hybrid-Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) to assimilate altimetry data from the Archiving, Validating and Interpolating Satellite Oceanography Data (AVISO) in the Atlantic. Several numerical experiments were conducted and their results were analyzed. It is shown that the method is able to assimilate data and to produce analyses closer to observations. It also conserves the model balance. This method allows calculating the confidence range of the analyses by estimating their errors The presented method is compared with the Ensemble Optimal Interpolation scheme (EnOI) and it is shown that it has several advantages, in particular, it provides a better forecast and requires less computational cost. Abstract

This work presents a method for numerical simulation of viscous fluid flows based on the use of filtered Lagrangian Navier-Stokes equations. It is based on the hypothesis that the small scale motions are responsible for the homogenization of the physical properties in infinitesimal fluid parcels through a mixing process, mathematically expressed as a spatial filter, which implicitly works as an averaging operator. When the filter was applied to the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flows, in the Lagrangian frame of reference, the functional form of the resulting equations was preserved, and the number of unknowns remained the same as the number of available equations, therefore circumventing the need of an explicit subgrid scale model. The method was validated by performing two-dimensional simulations of high Reynolds number wake flows. It was verified that the main large scale characteristics of the flows were properly replicated.

18. Occurrence of Magellanic penguins along the Northeast Brazilian coast during 2008 Austral winter.

Abstract

During the austral winter of 2008, thousands of penguins traveled to low latitudes along the South Atlantic coast of South America. The atmospheric and oceanic conditions from April to July 2008 may account for the penguins' unusual geographic distribution. During that period, South Atlantic coastal waters were cooler; the wind anomalies had northward and onshore components; the ocean's coastal region presented northward currents that favored the penguins to travel toward lower latitudes. This anomalous climate regime resulted from extreme meteorological frontal systems that occurred mainly during June 2008. Three consecutive extreme midlatitude cyclones produced strong wind shear that resulted in the northward oceanic flow along the South American eastern shoreline favoring the penguins to be spotted in northern tropical waters.
