Adhesive bonding technology is being increasingly used in the assembly and repair processes of composite structures. The existence of debond flaws weakens the performance of adhesively bonded structures. This article presents the results from an investigation into the effects of debond flaws on the mechanical performance of adhesively bonded single lap joints. The experimental results show that both the load-carrying capability and the failure mode of the single lap joints vary with the location of the debond flaws. Three-dimensional progressive damage finite-element models were developed in ABAQUS to simulate the tensile behaviour of single lap joints. The simulation results agree with the experimental data. The flaws located at 1/4 lap length result in a more pronounced reduction in the load-carrying capability than those located at the edge and the middle portion of the bond region. Compared with the other two locations, the residual strength of the single lap joint with a flaw at 1/2 lap length possesses a higher value. Moreover, the effects of flaws on strength reduction are more prominent for damage propagation than damage initiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An offset representative unit cell (ORUC) is introduced to predict elastic properties of three-dimensional (3D) eight-harness satin weave composites both analytically and numerically. A curved beam model is presented based on minimum complementary energy principle, which establishes an analytical solution for elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio calculation. Finite element method is developed to predict engineering constants of composites. Modified periodic boundary conditions and load method for ORUC are also presented. Experiments of simulated material are performed under tensile test. Close correlation is obtained between experimental data and predictions. Sensitivity study is conducted and manifests that within a large variation of constitutive material properties, the curved beam model derives close predictions comparing to finite element model, which indicates the stability of the curved beam model. Parametric study is also conducted to discuss the effect of weave type and geometric dimensions on elastic properties. It is argued that the curved beam model could manifest fine predictions accurately and stably, and is recommended for the prediction of elastic properties of satin weave composite.

Climate change is a global phenomenon that directly affects agriculture by altering crop yield, nutritional quality, pests, and plant diseases. The North Aegean Basin located in Turkey has considerable agricultural importance due to its fertile soils. Agricultural activities have increased significantly and uncontrollably in the last decade, resulting in dramatic changes in nitrate and phosphorus levels in surface water within the watershed. Changes in climatic conditions have the potential to impact the quantity and quality of water resources. Best management practices (BMPs) are presently utilized as a planning tool to enhance the quality of water resources. To develop policies in this regard, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of BMPs. To this end, this study aims to investigate the potential effect of climate change on the surface water quality of the North Aegean Basin. For the period between 2010 and 2030, global climate data retrieved from Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios 4.5 and 8.5 and regionally downscaled were used to feed the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The various potential BMP scenarios were developed and simulated in the hydrological model by considering the effects of climate change. The RCP4.5 scenario reduced the precipitation by 15.11%, while the RCP8.5 scenario reduced the precipitation by 10.97%. Decreased precipitation also affected the runoff and the nutrient loads and concentrations. As a result of the RCP4.5 simulation, TP and TN concentrations increased by 24.42% and 58.45%, respectively, in the IST_KEN014 station. Improvements were observed in TN and TP concentrations with the effect of applied BMP simulations. Also, the results revealed that the applied BMP scenarios may contribute to considerable reductions in nutrient loads. Considering the RCP4.5 scenario, BMPs reduced TN loads in the basin by 2.42-10.97%, while reducing TP loads by around 3.60-16.81%. Considering the RCP8.5 scenario, the BMPs reduced the TN loads in the basin between 2.21 and 10.04%, while they reduced the TP loads between 3.57 and 16.67%., (© 2023. The design of wastewater system pipe size is traditionally based on the maximum wastewater flow that is a function of multiple factors. Understanding the appropriate peaking factors (PF) by using daily flow variations through wastewater collection systems (WWCS) is essential for cost-effective design. This paper describes the maximum and minimum PFs by using wastewater flow data of four separate residential areas such as Lara, Belek-1, Kemer, and Hurma in Antalya, which is the tourism capital of Turkey. The study involves the analysis of wastewater data recorded at daily interval for two different time periods (2006-2009 and 2016-2019) in Antalya. There is a comprehensive investigation regarding PFs that involves sustained peaking flow and percentiles. Therefore, a new empirical equation was proposed by using wastewater flowrate for the estimation of the maximum daily peaking factor. When the daily PFs are determined in the range of 1.31-1.52, 1.60-2.58, 2.26-3.29, and 1.93-2.29 for Lara, Belek-1, Kemer, and Hurma wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for 2016-2019 time period, they are in the range of 2.19-2.93 and 1.95-3.31 for Lara and Hurma WWTPs for the time period of 2006-2009, respectively. In brief, this study presents a comprehensive calculation of PFs with a determination of their sustained flow analysis with different durations and percentiles. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This study presents the findings regarding peaking factors and its statistical analysis for different time periods. Statistical analysis included sustained flow, and the percentile of peaking factors was applied to waste water flow data for touristic city of Antalya. Objective: To determine the plasma protein binding rate of arctiin and arctigenin., Method: The ultrafiltration combined with HPLC was employed to determine the plasma protein binding rate of arctiin and arctigenin as well as rat plasma and healthy human plasma proteins., Result: The plasma protein binding rate of arctiin with rat plasma at the concentrations of 64. 29, 32.14, 16.07 mg x L(-1) were (71.2 +/- 2.0)%, (73.4 +/- 0.61)%, (78.2 +/- 1.9)%, respectively; while the plasma protein binding rate of arctiin with healthy human plasma at the above concentrations were (64.8 +/- 3.1)%, (64.5 +/- 2.5)%, (77.5 +/- 1.7)%, respectively. The plasma protein binding rate of arctigenin with rat plasma at the concentrations of 77.42, 38.71, 19.36 mg x L(-1) were (96.7 +/- 0.41)%, (96.8 +/- 1.6)%, (97.3 +/- 0.46)%, respectively; while the plasma protein binding rate of arctigenin with normal human plasma at the above concentrations were (94.7 +/- 3.1)%, (96.8 +/- 1.6)%, (97.9 +/- 1.3)%, respectively., Conclusion: The binding rate of arctiin with rat plasma protein was moderate, which is slightly higher than the binding rate of arctiin with healthy human plasma protein. The plasma protein binding rates of arctigenin with both rat plasma and healthy human plasma are very high.

A prospective study of dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) was conducted in a cohort of adult volunteers from two textile factories located in West Java, Indonesia. Volunteers in the cohort were bled every three months and were actively followed for the occurrence of dengue (DEN) disease. The first two years of the study showed an incidence of symptomatic DEN disease of 18 cases per 1,000 person-years and an estimated asymptomatic/ mild infection rate of 56 cases per 1,000 person-years in areas of high disease transmission. In areas where no symptomatic cases were detected, the incidence of asymptomatic or mild infection was 8 cases per 1,000 person-years. Dengue-2 virus was the predominant serotype identified, but all four serotypes were detected among the cohort. Four cases of DHF and one case of dengue shock syndrome (DSS) were identified. Three of the four DHF cases were due to DEN-3 virus. The one DSS case occurred in the setting of a prior DEN-2 virus infection, followed by a secondary infection with DEN-1 virus. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a longitudinal cohort study of naturally acquired DF and DHF in adults.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) cause an acute inflammation of the liver. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) cause chickenpox (varicella) and herpes zoster. Effective vaccines against hepatitis A and varicella are available for children, adolescents and adults. In order to implement an appropriate vaccination policy, a baseline to assess the potential benefits and sections of the population who would benefit most are required. We investigated seroprevalence of hepatitis A virus and varicella zoster antibodies in a Javanese community. A total of 1,103 subjects were studied. The 600 subjects aged 4 to 9 years were sampled between 23 October and 2 November, 1995. The other subjects were sampled between 12 October and 1 November, 1996. The overall prevalence of anti-HAV in cohort was 28.7%. Anti-HAV seroprevalence rates were below 30% until the age of 15 and below 40% until the age of 25. The anti-varicella seroprevalence showed only in two thirds of seropositive population at the age of 15. The results of the study have implications for vaccination strategies for both hepatitis A and varicella zoster.
