The behavioural ecology of ultrasonic-singing katydids is not well understood, and the general bioacoustics, barely known for a few Neotropical Meconematinae, tends to be overlooked for species from Southeast Asia. These include Asiatic species of Phlugidini, commonly known as crystal predatory katydids. One of its genera, Asiophlugis consists of 16 species for which acoustic signals and stridulum anatomy are broadly unknown. These characters can be used to understand species boundaries. Here, we sampled Asiophlugis from five sites in Malay Peninsula and Borneo Island, recorded the acoustic signals of five species plus one subspecies using ultrasound sensitive equipment, and examined their stridulum anatomy. The calling songs of the taxa involved were documented for the first time. We found that the stridulum anatomy (e.g., tooth distributions, tooth length and tooth density) is distinct between species but less so between subspecies. In contrary, songs of different taxa are different based on acoustic parameters (e.g., pulse duration, peak frequency) and descriptive patterns, even between the subspecies. We also did not observe that song signals are more different in sympatry than in allopatry. Whether this can be generalised requires further sampling, highlighting the need for more research on the ultrasonic acoustic communication in Asiatic katydids.

The study of insect–plant interactions such as flower visitors, pollinators, and florivores, are important for understanding the natural world. However, not all flower-visiting insects are equally well known, especially in the biodiverse Southeast Asian region. One group is the orthopterans, comprising of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids. Natural history observations were made around Southeast Asia to document flower-visiting orthopterans. Owing to the limited studies on the ecology of orthopterans in Southeast Asia, we provide here the first documentation of flower-visiting orthopterans from Southeast Asia and the most extensive one for the Tropics. Based on 140 incidences of orthopteran visiting flowers, 41 orthopteran species have so far been recorded to visit 35 different plant species, in mainly Singapore, Malaysia, part of Thailand, and Brunei Darussalam. We conclude that orthopterans are indeed overlooked flower-visitors in this region and warrant further investigation.

We present an experimental approach for controlled switching between uniform flow for pumping and vortical flow for mixing in a microchannel fabricated onto a piezoelectric substrate. For particle laden fluids, this arrangement permits a choice between transport and alignment of microparticles. Using surface acoustic waves with amplitudes beyond 1 nm, the transition from uniform to mixing flows occurs when the acoustic wavelength in the fluid is reduced to a dimension smaller than the channel width, i.e., λf ≥ Wch for uniform flow and λf < Wch for mixing flow. On the other hand, using relatively weak surface acoustic waves with amplitudes below 1 nm, particles in an initially homogeneous suspension agglomerate into equally spaced lines with a separation of λf /2. Switching the transducer between its fundamental resonant frequency f0 and its first harmonic frequency f1+ ∼2 f0 causes a switch between uniform and mixing flow, while switching between large and small amplitude excitation allows one to choose whether to collect the particles in the flow along nodal lines parallel to the channel. These results are uniquely achieved without requiring the microfabrication of complex microchannel architectures and control schemes; the switching is simply achieved by adjusting two parameters: the acoustic excitation frequency and amplitude. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We present a method for controlling the motion of microparticles suspended in an aqueous solution, which fills in a microchannel fabricated into a piezoelectric substrate, using propagating surface acoustic waves. The cross-sectional shape of this microchannel is trapezoidal, preventing the formation of acoustic standing waves across the channel width and therefore allowing the steering of microparticles. The induced acoustic streaming transports these particles to eliminate the use of external pumps for fluid actuation. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

We report the use of focused surface acoustic waves (SAWs) generated on 128° rotated Y -cut X -propagating lithium niobate (LiNbO3) for enhancing the actuation of fluids and the manipulation of particle suspensions at microscale dimensions. In particular, we demonstrate increased efficiency and speed in carrying out particle concentration/separation and in generating intense micromixing in microliter drops within which acoustic streaming is induced due to the focused SAW beneath the drop. Concentric circular and elliptical single-phase unidirectional transducers (SPUDTs) were used to focus the SAW. We benchmark our results against a straight SPUDT which does not cause focusing of the SAW. Due to the increased wave intensity and asymmetry of the wave, we found both circular and elliptical SPUDTs concentrate particles in under 1 s, which is one order of magnitude faster than the straight SPUDT and several orders of magnitude faster than conventional microscale devices. The concentric circular SPUDT was found to be most effective at a given input power since it generated the largest azimuthal velocity gradient within the fluid to drive particle shear migration. On the other hand, the concentric elliptical SPUDT generated the highest micromixing intensity due to the more narrowly focused SAW radiation that substantially enhances acoustic streaming in the fluid. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Smoke particles (SPs) are used to directly visualize surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating on a 128°-rotated Y-cut X-propagating lithium niobate (LiNb O3) substrate. By electrically exciting a SAW device in a compartment filled with SP, the SP were found to collect along the regions where the SAW propagates on the substrate. The results of the experiments show that SPs are deposited adjacent to regions of large vibration amplitude and form a clear pattern corresponding to the surface wave profile on the substrate. Through an analysis of the SAW-induced acoustic streaming in the air adjacent to the substrate and the surface acceleration measured with a laser Doppler vibrometer, we postulate that the large transverse surface accelerations due to the SAW ejects SP from the surface and carries them aloft to relatively quiescent regions nearby via acoustic streaming. Offering finer detail than fine powders common in Chladni figures [E. Chladni, Entdeckungen über die Theorie des Klanges (Weidmanns, Erben und Reich, Leipzig, Germany, 1787)] the approach is an inexpensive and a quick counterpart to laser interferometric techniques, presenting a means to explore the controversial phenomena of particle agglomeration on surfaces. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Objective: To identify factors in patients with type 2 diabetes and A1C >7.0% associated with attainment of A1C ≤ 7.0%.Research Design and Methods: We used a prospective registry of 5,280 Canadian patients in primary care settings enrolled in a 12-month glycemic pharmacotherapy optimization strategy based on national guidelines.Results: At close out, median A1C was 7.1% (vs. 7.8% at baseline) with 48% of subjects achieving A1C ≤ 7.0% (P < 0.0001). Older patients of Asian or black origin, those with longer diabetes duration, those with lower baseline A1C, BMI, LDL cholesterol, and blood pressure, and those on angiotensin receptor blockers and a lower number of antihyperglycemic agents, were more likely to achieve A1C ≤ 7.0% at some point during the study (all P < 0.0235). Access to private versus public drug coverage did not impact glycemic target realization.Conclusions: Patient demography, cardiometabolic health, and ongoing pharmacotherapy, but not access to private drug insurance coverage, contribute to the care gap in type 2 diabetes. Background: Next-generation sequencing technology can now be used to sequence historical specimens from natural history collections, an approach referred to as museomics. The museomics allows obtaining molecular data from old museum-preserved specimens, a resource of biomolecules largely underexploited despite the fact that these specimens are often unique samples of nomenclatural types that can be crucial for resolving scientific questions. Despite recent technical progress, cricket mitogenomes are still scarce in the databases, with only a handful of new ones generated each year from freshly collected material., Methods: In this study, we used the genome skimming method to sequence and assemble three new complete mitogenomes representing two tribes of the cricket subfamily Eneopterinae: two were obtained from old, historical type material of Xenogryllus lamottei (68 years old) and X. maniema (80 years old), the third one from a freshly collected specimen of Nisitrus vittatus . We compared their genome organization and base composition, and reconstructed the molecular phylogeny of the family Gryllidae., Results: Our study not only confirmed that the genome skimming method used by next generation sequencing allows us to efficiently obtain the whole mitogenome from dry-pinned historical specimens, but we also confirmed how promising it is for large-scale comparative studies of mitogenomes using resources from natural history collections. A new species of Itara (Phormincter) is described from Mindanao in the Philippines: Itara (Phormincter) mindanao Tan, Grumo, Gono & Bahoy, sp. nov. This represents the first record of this subgenus in the Philippines, having previously known only from Borneo, Java, Malay Peninsula and Sumatra; as well as only the second species of Itara known from the Philippines and the first from Mindanao Island. The male calling song of the holotype was also recorded and is described here. Additionally, the male calling song of another congener, Itara (Singitara) singularis Gorochov, 1997 from Sabah, is described here. A new species of Itara (Bornitara) is also described from Sabah in Borneo: Itara (Bornitara) tenompok Tan, Japir & Chung, sp. nov.

Based on recent field sampling in the highlands of western Sabah, a new species of Depressacca Ingrisch, 1998 (Conocephalinae: Agraeciini) is described from Tenompok, Depressacca macrolima sp. nov., that can be easily distinguish from two other known congeners by the presence of numerous large and falcate spines on the legs numerous large and falcate spines on its legs. Based on the new material, we also document here the live images and/or new locality records for other katydids of the tribes Agraeciini and Meconematini: Bispinolakis longicauda Ingrisch, 1998, Palaeoagraecia philippina (Karny, 1926) and Salomona borneensis Willemse, 1959; Alloteratura (Meconemopsis) longa Gorochov, 2008, Borneratura kinabaluana (Bey-Bienko, 1971) and Rhinoteratura pulchra Gorochov, 2008.

The development of alternative techniques to efficiently inactivate bacterial suspensions is crucial to prevent transmission of waterborne illness, particularly when commonly used techniques such as heating, filtration, chlorination, or ultraviolet treatment are not practical or feasible. We examine the effect of MHz-order acoustic wave irradiation in the form of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on Gram-positive (Escherichia coli) and Gram-negative (Brevibacillus borstelensis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria suspended in water droplets. A significant increase in the relative bacterial load reduction of colony-forming units (up to 74%) can be achieved by either increasing (1) the excitation power, or, (2) the acoustic treatment duration, which we attributed to the effect of the acoustic radiation force exerted on the bacteria. Consequently, by increasing the maximum pressure amplitude via a hybrid modulation scheme involving a combination of amplitude and pulse-width modulation, we observe that the bacterial inactivation efficiency can be further increased by approximately 14%. Recent collection in Panti Forest Reserve in Johor, Peninsular Malaysia offered us the opportunity to better understand the species in southern Malay Peninsula. Two new species and one new genus of Meconematini are described here: Cercoteratura reflexa sp. n. and Platycercotura caricauda gen. et sp. n. We present new locality records for Peracca macritchiensis Tan & Ingrisch, 2014, Viriacca viridis Ingrisch, 1998; Lipotactes (Dialipotactes) maculatus Hebard, 1922; Asiophlugis rete Gorochov, 1998; and Arnobia pilipes tropica Gorochov, 1998, all of which were previously recorded in Pahang (Peninsular Malaysia) and Singapore, suggest that the distribution of these species is continuous between Pahang and Singapore. New locality record for Asiophlugis temasek temasek Gorochov & Tan, 2011, previously known only from Singapore, indicates that this subspecies is no longer endemic to Singapore.

The taxonomy of the crickets from the genus Odontogryllodes Chopard, 1969 is reviewed. Two species new to science are described here, one from Peninsular Malaysia (part of Malay Peninsula) and another from East Malaysia (part of Borneo): Odontogryllodes undatus Tan, Muhammad & Abdullah sp. nov. from Panti Forest Reserve and Odontogryllodes magnus Tan, Japir & Chung sp. nov. from Tenompok Forest Reserve, respectively. We also present an updated key to the species of Odontogryllodes. In total, nine species are currently known.

Only one species of Pendleburyella Chopard, 1969 (Gryllidae, Pentacentrinae) was previously known to occur in Borneo: Pendleburyella eirmosa Tan, Muhammad & Wahab, 2023 from Brunei Darussalam. Here, two additional new species of crickets from the genus Pendleburyella are described from the highlands of Sabah, Borneo: Pendleburyella eremita sp. nov. from Bukit Hampuan and Pendleburyella nimba sp. nov. from Mount Trus Madi. In total, six species of Pendleburyella are currently known, three from Borneo and three from Malay Peninsula. It is likely that many more species are awaiting discovery owing to its cryptic morphology and elusive nature.

Introduction: Despite contemporary practice guidelines, a substantial number of post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients fail to achieve guideline-recommended LDL-C thresholds. Our study aimed to investigate this guideline recommendations-to-practice care gap. Specifically, we aimed to identify opportunities where additional lipid-lowering therapies are indicated and explore reasons for the non-prescription of guideline-recommended therapies., Methods: ACS patients with LDL-C ≥1.81 mmol/L (70 mg/dL) despite maximally tolerated statin ± ezetimibe therapy (including those intolerant of ≥2 statins) were enrolled 1-12 months post-event from 27 Canadian and US sites from September 2018 to October 2020 and followed up for three visits during the 12 months post-event. We determined the proportion of patients who did not achieve Canadian/US guideline-recommended LDL-C thresholds, the number of patients who would have been eligible for additional lipid-lowering therapies, and reasons behind lack of escalation in lipid-lowering therapies when indicated. Individual patient and aggregate practice feedback, including guideline-recommended intensification suggestions, were provided to each physician., Results: Of the 248 patients enrolled in the pilot study (median age 64 [57, 73] years, 31.5% female and STEMI 27.4%), 75.4% were on high-intensity statins on the first visit. A total of 18.5% of those who attended all 3 visits had an LDL-C measured only at the first visit which was above the threshold. After 1 year of follow-up, 51.9% of patients achieved LDL-C thresholds at either visit 2 or 3. In the context of feedback reminding physicians about guideline-directed LDL-C-modifying therapy in their individual participating patients, we observed an increase in the use of ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitor therapy at 3-12 months. This was associated with a significant lowering of the mean LDL-C (from 2.93 mmol/L [baseline] to 2.09 mmol/L [3-6 months] to 1.87 mmol/L [6-12 months]) and a significantly greater proportion of patients (from 0% [baseline] to 38.6% [3-6 months] to 53.4% [6-12 months]) achieving guideline-recommended LDL-C thresholds. The most prevalent reasons behind the non-intensification of LDL-C-lowering therapy with ezetimibe and/or PCSK9i were LDL-C levels being close to target, the pre-existing use of other lipid-lowering therapies, patient refusal, and cost., Conclusion: Although most patients post-ACS were on high-intensity statin therapy, almost 50% failed to achieve guideline-recommended LDL-C thresholds by 1-year follow-up. Orthopteran surveys were conducted recently on Mindanao Island of the Philippines. Four species new to science are described here: Mistshenkoana lunotan sp. nov., Mistshenkoana higaonon sp. nov. and Ectatoderus dubius sp. nov. from Misamis Oriental; and Phaloria (Phaloria) rotundata sp. nov. from Agusan del Sur. Based on new collected material, Madasumma fuscoirrorata Chopard, 1925, first described based on a single female from Mindanao, is transferred to Varitrella (Cantotrella) fuscoirrorata (Chopard, 1925) comb. nov. We also describe the male of this species for the first time. Madasumma zamboanga Otte, 2007, first described from Zamboanga del Norte (Mindanao), is also transferred to Mnesibulus (Amnesibulus) and redescribed: Mnesibulus (Amnesibulus) zamboanga (Otte, 2007) comb. nov. We also describe previously unknown calling songs of seven species: Falcerminthus parvus (Baroga-Barbecho & Robillard, 2020), Ajorama balatukanis Otte, 1988, Varitrella (Cantotrella) bakeri (Chopard, 1925), Varitrella (Cantotrella) fuscoirrorata (Chopard, 1925) comb. nov., Phaloria (Phaloria) rotundata sp. nov., Ornebius bioculatus Tan et al., 2019 and Ectatoderus dubius sp. nov.

Background: Selecting the appropriate antithrombotic regimen for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or have had medically managed acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains complex. This multi-centre observational study evaluated patterns of antithrombotic therapies utilized among Canadian patients with AF post-PCI or ACS., Methods and Results: By retrospective chart audit, 611 non-valvular AF patients [median (interquartile range) age 76 (69-83) years, CHADS 2 score 2 (1-3)] who underwent PCI or had medically managed ACS between August 2018 and December 2020 were identified by 68 cardiologists across eight provinces in Canada. Overall, triple antithrombotic therapy [TAT: combined oral anticoagulation (OAC) and dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)] was the most common initial antithrombotic strategy, with use in 53.8 % of patients, followed by dual pathway therapy (32.7 % received OAC and a P2Y12 inhibitor, and 4.1 % received OAC and aspirin) and DAPT (9.3 %). Median duration of TAT was 30 (7, 30) days. Compared to the previous CONNECT AF + PCI-I program, there was an increased use of dual pathway therapy relative to TAT over time (P-value <.0001). DOACs (direct oral anticoagulants) represented 90.3 % of all OACs used overall, with apixaban being the most utilized (50.5 %). Proton pump inhibitors were used in 57.0 % of all patients, and 70.1 % of patients on ASA. Planned antithrombotic therapies at 1 year were: 76.2 % OAC monotherapy, 8.3 % OAC + ASA, 7.9 % OAC + P2Y12 inhibitor, 4.3 % DAPT, 1.3 % ASA alone, and <1 % triple therapy., Conclusion: In accordance with recent Canadian Cardiovascular Society guideline recommendations, we observed an increased use of dual pathway therapy relative to TAT over time in both AF patients post-PCI (elective and emergent) and in those with medically managed ACS. Additionally, DOACs have become the prevailing form of anticoagulation across all antithrombotic regimens. A list of 10 species from three subfamilies of Tetrigidae from Bạch Mã National Park in the province of Thừa Thiên-Huế, Vietnam is presented here. Eight of which are new for the national park. Among these, two new species are described: Miriatroides luna Tan & Storozhenko, sp. nov. and Rhopalina bachma Tan & Storozhenko, sp. nov. New synonymy is proposed: Systolederus cinereus Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 = Systolederus ridleyi Hancock, 1909, syn. nov. Three species are also recorded in Vietnam for the first time: Tegotettix bufocrocodil (Storozhenko & Dawwrueng, 2015) previously known from Thailand and Cambodia, Zhengitettix albitarsus Storozhenko, 2013 so far considered as endemic to Thailand, and Systolederus cinereus widely distributed in Southeast Asia.

Based on material collected during recent fieldwork in eastern Sabah, the males of Nisitrus danum Robillard & Tan and Cardiodactylus variegatus Gorochov & Robillard are described for the first time, along with their calling songs. New locality records of N. danum, N. vittatus (Haan), Falcerminthus sandakan (Tan et al.), Cardiodactylus borneoe Robillard & Gorochov and C. variegatus are also presented. New material of Nisitrus species-N. danum and N. vittatus-allowed us to compare these syntopic species.

The taxonomy of poorly known crickets from the genus Pendleburyella Chopard, 1969 (Gryllidae, Pentacentrinae) is reviewed. The type specimens of described species were re-located and re-examined. Based on more recent collections, we describe two new species: Pendleburyella eirmosa sp. nov. and Pendleburyella pimela sp. nov., from Brunei Darussalam and Singapore respectively. The new material also allowed us to examine the male genitalia and describe the male calling song of the genus for the first time.

A new species of Asiophlugis Gorochov, 1998 (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae, Phlugidini) is described from southern Philippines, in Mindanao, Misamis Oriental, Gingoog City: Asiophlugis spatulata sp. nov. This new species is characterised by the long, slender and flattened male cercus, with a basal process spatulated at the apex, and with a tooth-like medial process produced along the inner margin; as well as the male tenth abdominal tergite with two long cylindrical latero-apical processes pointing dorsad and externally. This new species represents the second species of Asiophlugis to be recorded from the Philippines.

Cardio-oncology is an emerging multi-disciplinary field, which aims to reduce morbidity and mortality of cancer patients by preventing and managing cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicities. With the exponential growth in cancer and cardiovascular diseases in Asia, there is an emerging need for cardio-oncology awareness among physicians and country-specific cardio-oncology initiatives. In this state-of-the-art review, we sought to describe the burden of cancer and cardiovascular disease in Asia, a region with rich cultural and socio-economic diversity. Background: Many factors can influence circadian rhythms in animals. For acoustically communicating species, both abiotic cues (such as light and temperature) and biotic cues (such as the activity of other animals), can influence the timing of signalling activity. Here we compare the 24-h singing activity of the cricket Lebinthus luae in the laboratory and field to assess whether the presence of other singing insects influences circadian rhythm., Methods: Acoustic monitors were placed in four localities in Singapore and the number of L. luae calls were counted for 10 min of each hour. Individuals from the same localities were captured and recorded in the laboratory in silence but with similar abiotic conditions (temperature and light cycle) as they experience in the field, and the number of calls over 24 h was quantified., Results: The 24-h pattern of L. luae singing was not significantly different between laboratory and field recordings. Singing activity peaked in the morning, with a secondary peak in the afternoon and a smaller peak at night. In the field, L. luae sang in the same locations and at the same time as diurnally singing cicadas, suggesting that the sympatric cicada chorus did not affect the circadian rhythm of communication in this species. Spiky pygmy devils (Tetrigidae: Discotettiginae) are, because of the spiky pronotal projections and widened subapical antennal segments, among the most unique pygmy grasshoppers in Southeast (SE) Asia. The taxonomy of the group was unclear in the past, so this study brings a taxonomic and biographical review of the genus Discotettix Costa, 1864. New terminology of the pronotal projections is proposed for Scelimeninae. All valid species hitherto included in the genus are redescribed; a new genus is established for Discotettix shelfordi Hancock, 1907, Disconius Skejo, Pushkar et Tumbrinck gen. n., so a new combination is established for the species (Disconius shelfordi comb. n.). New synonymy is established: Discotettix selysi Bolívar, 1887 = Discotettix selangori Mahmood, Idris et Salmah, 2007 syn. n. Three new species are described and a key to Discotettix species is provided. The genus now includes seven species (1) Discotettix aruanus Skejo, Pushkar et Tumbrinck sp. n. from Aru; (2) D. belzebuth (Serville, 1838) from Borneo; (3) D. doriae Bolívar, 1898 stat. resurr. from the Mentawai islands; (4) D. kirscheyi Skejo, Pushkar, Tumbrinck et Tan sp. n. from Northeast (NE) Borneo; (5) D. scabridus (Stål, 1877) endemic to Mindanao and Samar; (6) D. selysi Bolívar, 1887 from Sumatra and peninsular Malaysia; (7) D. sumatrensis Skejo, Pushkar et Tumbrinck sp. n. endemic to southern Sumatra. Moreover, Discotettix is again subdivided into two subgenera: Mnesarchus Stål, 1877 stat. resurr. (D. scabridus) and nominotypical one (other species). Widened antennal segments are the only character common to all Discotettiginae genera, but this trait does not have great taxonomic importance, as it is homoplastic, meaning that it appeared in distant Tetrigidae groups independently. Discotettix is herewith transferred to the subfamily Scelimeninae and accordingly, the subfamily Discotettiginae Hancock, 1907 syn. n. becomes a junior synonym of the subfamily Scelimeninae Bolívar, 1887. The tribe Discotettigini stat. resurr., on the other hand, gathers corticolous genera of the Scelimeninae (Austrohancockia Günther, 1938, Bidentatettix Zheng, 1992, Disconius gen. n. Discotettix, Eufalconius Günther, 1938, Gibbotettix Zheng, 1992, Paragavialidium Zheng, 1994, Gavialidium Saussure, 1862, and Tegotettix Hancock, 1913), while the tribe Scelimenini becomes restricted to amphibious taxa. All taxa are described and amply depicted with both museum specimens and in situ photographs. An identification key is provided. The morphology and function of widened antennae in Discotettigini are discussed.

Background: Cardiotoxicity as a result of anthracycline chemotherapy has been linked to increased morbidity and mortality in breast cancer patients. There is a need for early detection through risk factor identification. To date, no large multicenter study has been conducted to describe the incidence, risk factors and clinical and demographic profiles of breast cancer patients with anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC) in the Philippines., Methods: This was a nationwide multicenter retrospective cohort study among adult breast cancer patients who underwent anthracycline chemotherapy from 2015 to 2020 in 10 sites in the Philippines. Baseline characteristics and possible risk factors for AIC were retrieved from medical records and cancer registries. AIC was defined as a reduction of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) by > 10% from baseline to a value of < 53% or the development of overt left ventricular systolic dysfunction or heart failure (HF). Odds ratios from logistic regression were computed to determine risk factors associated with AIC using STATA-15.0 software., Results: Out of 341 patients included, 33 had AIC, accounting for an incidence of 9.68%. Nine patients (2.6%) had clinical HF. AIC patients had a mean age of 53.91 ± 10.84 years. Breast cancer AIC patients were significantly older and had lower body mass index (BMI) than those without AIC. AIC patients had significantly more comorbidities, especially hypertension and atrial fibrillation. Multivariate analysis showed that patients with any preexisting comorbidity are approximately 12.37 times as likely to have AIC, while those with concurrent chemotherapy are 0.07 times or 93% less likely to have AIC., Conclusion: Among adult breast cancer patients undergoing anthracycline chemotherapy, we determined a high incidence of cardiotoxicity at 9.68%. Having preexisting comorbidities gave patients 12 times increased odds of developing anthracycline cardiotoxicity. The presence of concurrent non-anthracycline chemotherapy showed an inverse association with the development of AIC which we attribute largely to patient selection in a retrospective study. A species of scaly cricket is described here: Ornebius lupus sp. nov. from the mangrove forests in Singapore. Ornebius pullus Ingrisch, 2006 is recorded in eastern Sabah for the first time. The calling songs of Cycloptiloides bimaculatus Tan et al., 2021 and Ornebius pullus from Sabah are described. We also revise the diagnosis of Ectatoderus nigrofasciatus Tan et al., 2021 from Brunei Darussalam.

A new species of Meconematini is described from Tabin Wildlife Reserve in eastern Sabah: Cercoteratura repens sp. nov. This is the first report of the genus Cercoteratura in Sabah. Two species of Phisidini, Carliphisis acutipennis (Carl, 1908) and Neophisis (Indophisis) longipennis Jin, 1992, are reported in eastern Sabah for the first time. The calling song of Neophisis (Indophisis) longipennis with a near-complete ultrasonic spectrum is also described.

The diversity and taxonomy of Aphonoidini (Orthoptera, Gryllidae, Podoscirtinae) from Singapore are studied here. Prior to this study, three species were reported from Singapore: Aphonoides popovi Gorochov, 2007, Mistshenkoana nigrifrons Gorochov, 2007 [or M. angustifrons (Chopard 1930)] and Mistshenkoana gracilis (Chopard, 1925). Nevertheless, this is an underestimate of its diversity. Based on new specimens collected during recent surveys, eight species from four genera are now reported in Singapore. These include five new locality records for Singapore: Aphonoides ?cinereus (Haan, 1844); Dinomunda griseipennis (Chopard, 1969); Furcimunda furcilla Gorochov, 2007; Mistshenkoana bilineata (Chopard, 1954); Mistshenkoana hulu Gorochov, 2007. A key to the species of Aphonoidini is also presented.

Objectives: This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the treatment outcomes of patients treated with Group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) or group psychoeducation (GPE) as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy. Methods: Systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CENTRAL from inception till 1 March 2022 was conducted. Randomized-controlled-trials (RCTs) comparing GCBT/GPE with controls (treatment-as-usual/individualized therapy) in adults with bipolar disorder were eligible. The outcomes were relapse rates of any depressive or manic episodes and control of depressive and manic symptoms post-intervention. Overall odds-ratio was used to evaluate the relapse rates. Standard Mean Differences were pooled using a random-effects model for the control of depressive and manic symptoms. Results: 25 articles were assessed full-text independently by two members, and 11 studies were included in this meta-analysis. 601 and 590 participants were randomized into group-therapy (GCBT/GPE) and control, respectively. GPE significantly reduces relapse rates at post-intervention with Odds ratio of 0.43 (95% CI = 0.28-to-0.62, p < 0.0001) (I² = 41%) compared to control, however, no significant results were found for GPE on control of depressive or manic symptoms. No significant results were found for GCBT in all outcomes. Conclusion: This meta-analysis provides some evidence that GPE could be an efficacious treatment as an adjunct to treatment-as-usual in reducing the relapse rates of patients with bipolar disorder.

From the eastern parts of Sabah, four new species of crickets are described, two of which are from the subfamily Landrevinae and two from the subfamily Podoscirtinae: Duolandrevus (Duolandrevus) nobilis sp. nov. and Odontogryllodes spinifer sp. nov.; and Brevimunda trilineata sp. nov. and Varitrella (Cantotrella) tabin sp. nov., respectively. We also describe the calling songs for three species: Duolandrevus (Bejorama) lambir Gorochov, 2017, Duolandrevus (Duolandrevus) nobilis sp. nov. and Varitrella (Cantotrella) tabin sp. nov. A new locality record (Sabah, Sepilok) for Duolandrevus (Bejorama) lambir Gorochov, 2017, previously known from western Borneo (Sarawak, Lambir Hill and Brunei Darussalam, Kuala Belalong), was also reported.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases the risk of adverse outcomes in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The optimal regimen of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in CKD poses a challenge due to the increased bleeding and clotting tendencies, particularly since patients with CKD were underrepresented in randomized controlled trials. We examined the practice patterns of DAPT prescription stratified by the presence of CKD. The multicentre prospective Canadian Observational Antiplatelet Study (COAPT) enrolled patients with ACS between December 2011 and May 2013. The present study is a subgroup analysis comparing type and duration of DAPT and associated outcomes among patients with and without CKD (eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , calculated by CKD-EPI). Patients with CKD (275/1921, 14.3%) were prescribed prasugrel/ticagrelor less (18.5% vs 25.8%, p = 0.01) and had a shorter duration of DAPT therapy versus patients without CKD (median 382 vs 402 days, p = 0.003). CKD was associated with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) at 12 months (p < 0.001) but not bleeding when compared to patients without CKD. CKD was associated with MACE in both patients on prasugrel/ticagrelor (p = 0.017) and those on clopidogrel (p < 0.001) (p for heterogeneity = 0.70). CKD was associated with increased bleeding only among patients receiving prasugrel/ticagrelor (p = 0.007), but not among those receiving clopidogrel (p = 0.64) (p for heterogeneity = 0.036). Patients with CKD had a shorter DAPT duration and were less frequently prescribed potent P2Y 12 inhibitors than patients without CKD. Overall, compared with patients without CKD, patients with CKD had higher rates of MACE and similar bleeding rates. However, among those prescribed more potent P2Y 12 inhibitors, CKD was associated with more bleeding than those without CKD. We review the taxonomy of the gryllacridids from a small genus Monseremus Ingrisch, 2018. Monseremus bellus (Tan Wahab, 2018) comb. nov., previously described from Brunei Darussalam before the description of Monseremus, is now added as a second known species in this genus. From a recent field trip, we also added new locality record for the type species Monseremus appendiculatus Ingrisch, 2018. First described from Mount Kinabalu in western Sabah, this species has now been reported also in Mount Silam in eastern Sabah. Males of the type species were also collected for the first time and are described here. Lastly, we provide a dichotomous key to separate these two species.

Driven by natural and sexual selection, calling behaviours and call parameters can vary within and between individuals. Phenotypic plasticity can be influenced by environmental conditions (e.g., temperature), size, body condition, and age. Crickets have been classic model organisms for studying the evolution of acoustic communication, but previous studies have focused on field crickets, for which males call at a low frequency, while females exhibit phonotaxis. This study holistically investigated the plasticity of calling behaviours and call parameters across a temperature gradient in a species of lebinthine crickets and examined plasticity between and within individuals. These crickets exhibit a unique communication system, including males calling at a near-ultrasonic frequency while actively searching for females. Ten recording assays at different temperatures were done on males of different sizes and body conditions, half of the assays when the males first became adults and another half 1 month later. Size, body condition, and age group of male crickets, as well as the ambient temperature, had different effects on different calling behaviours (e.g., number of songs produced) and call parameters (e.g., call duration, trill syllable period), even when the acoustic traits were correlated. The crickets also exhibited acclimatisation to the experimental conditions in their calling behaviours and acoustic traits to repeated assays. Plasma treatment constitutes an efficient method for chemical-free disinfection. A spray-based system for dispensing plasma-activated aerosols onto surfaces would facilitate disinfection of complex and/or hidden surfaces inaccessible to direct line-of-sight (for example, UV) methods. The complexity and size of current plasma generators (for example, plasma jet and cometary plasma systems)-which prohibit portable operation, together with the short plasma lifetimes, necessitate a miniaturized in situ technique in which a source can be simultaneously activated and administered on-demand onto surfaces. Here, we demonstrate this possibility by combining two nanoscale technologies for plasma and aerosol generation into an integrated device that is sufficiently small and lightweight. Plasma is generated on a carpet of zinc oxide nanorods comprising a nanoneedle ensemble, which when raised to a high electric potential, constitutes a massive point charge array with near-singular electric fields to effect atmospheric breakdown. The plasma is then used to activate water transported through an underlying capillary wick, that is subsequently aerosolized under MHz-order surface acoustic waves. We show that the system, besides being amenable to miniaturization and hence integration into a chipscale device, leads to a considerable improvement in plasma-activation over its macroscale cometary discharge predecessor, with up to 20% and 127% higher hydrogen peroxide and nitrite ion concentrations that are respectively generated in the plasma-activated aerosols. This, in turn, leads to a 67% reduction in the disinfection time to achieve 95% bacterial load reduction, therefore demonstrating the potential of the technology as an efficient portable platform for on-demand field-use surface disinfection., Competing Interests: Competing interestsThe authors declare no competing interests., (© The Author(s) 2022.)

Mnesicleinae is a little-known subfamily of Chorotypidae and consists of 19 genera distributed throughout the Malay Archipelago, including Uvarovia Bolvar, 1930. For many species from this subfamily, nearly nothing is known after their original descriptions. Based on new materials from recent surveys, we were able to examine specimens from two species: Uvarovia longipennis Bolvar, 1930 from Malay Peninsula (also type species for genus) and Uvarovia gracilipes Bolvar, 1931 from Borneo. Only female specimens were known for the two species. Here, we describe for the first time males specimens of Uvarovia longipennis and Uvarovia gracilipes. We also present an updated key to species of Uvarovia and a key to genera of Mnesicleinae from Borneo and Malay Peninsula.

Sword-tailed crickets of the genus Amusurgus Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae: Trigonidiinae) from Southeast Asia is still poorly known and its taxonomy requires a revision. Many species are still awaiting discovery and formal description. Based on newly-acquired materials from the mangrove in Singapore, a new species of Amusurgus is described: Amusurgus (Amusurgus) caerulus sp. nov. This discovery also demonstrates that even in a small country like Singapore, we still do not have a comprehensive understanding of its orthopteran diversity.

Introduction: Pancreatic arteriovenous malformation (P-AVM) is a rare vascular malformation. Fewer than 200 cases have been reported. The clinical manifestations lack specificity. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and jaundice, which is easily confused with other disorders., Patient Concerns: A 42-year-old man received TAE due to abdominal pain caused by P-AVM in a local hospital, melena and abdominal pain occurred in a short time after TAE., Diagnosis: The patient was diagnosed as P-AVM which was confirmed by computed tomography and digital subtraction angiography., Interventions: A pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy was successfully performed after diagnosis was made., Outcomes: The patient recovered with no complications two weeks after surgery, and no sign of recurrence was found during the 4-mo follow-up period., Conclusion: In our experience, TAE may have limitations in the treatment of P-AVM and surgical resection should be considered as the treatment of choice., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interests., (Copyright © 2021 the Author(s). Four new species from three genera of Lebinthina crickets are described here. These include one species of Gnominthus: Gnominthus milneus sp. nov. from Papua New Guinea; two new species of Macrobinthus: Macrobinthus kei sp. nov. and Macrobinthus mamai sp. nov. from Maluka (Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea, respectively; and one species of Microbinthus: Microbinthus elegans sp. nov. from Papua New Guinea.

Objectives: Optimal control of cardiovascular risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is challenging. Limited data are available from the primary care setting on achievement of guideline-recommended targets in this population before the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists., Methods: The Diabetes Mellitus Status in Canada survey included 5,172 patients with T2D seen by primary care physicians (PCPs) in November 2012. We compared treatment targets and therapeutic interventions in patients with and without CKD., Results: Compared with those without CKD (n=3,804), patients with CKD (n=1,368) were older, more likely to be female, had a longer duration of diabetes and had more vascular complications. Patients with CKD more frequently had a less stringent glycated hemoglobin (A1C) target of ≤8.0% set by PCPs (10.3% vs 20%, p<0.001), and fewer patients with CKD met the A1C target of ≤7.0% (50.9% vs 47.1%, p=0.016) than those without CKD. Both groups had a similar likelihood of achieving the blood pressure (BP) target of ≤130/80 mmHg (36.8% vs 34.8%, p=0.20), whereas patients with CKD more frequently achieved a low-density lipoprotein cholesterol target of ≤2.0 mmol/L (54.8% vs 61.3%, p<0.001). Overall, only 12.5% in both groups achieved all 3 targets (12.3% vs 13.3%, p=0.33)., Conclusions: Only 1 of 8 patients with T2D achieved optimal glycemic, BP and cholesterol targets, regardless of the presence or absence of CKD. Although more medical interventions were used in patients with CKD, a lower proportion achieved guideline-recommended targets for A1C. We investigate a hybrid treatment-consisting of an atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment, followed by an MHz surface acoustic waves (SAWs) treatment with either de-ionized (DI) water or plasma activated water (PAW)-on mung beans to accelerate the germination process, as mung bean sprout is one of the important food staples. For the early growth rate (after 320 min), we observe that the hybrid treatment with PAW can lead to approximately 217% higher moisture content for the treated beans when compared with that without hybrid treatment. Additionally, the hybrid-treated beans germinate in around 120 min, while the untreated beans germinate only in around 420 min, that is, 3.5-fold faster for treated beans. This can be attributed to the dominant effect of SAW that accelerates stage 1 water absorption process and the effect of direct plasma and PAW that promote stage 2 metabolism process, leading to the enhancement in stage 3 germination process in early growth rate. For the post growth rate (after 24 h), we observe that the hybrid treatment with DI water can lead to an approximately 44.20% in higher moisture and 71.17% in radicle length when compared with untreated beans. Interestingly, the hybrid treatment with PAW, on the other hand, is observed to have an adverse effect on germination after 24 h, that is, approximately 14.51% lower in moisture content and 43.49% lower in radicle length for the hybrid-treated beans with PAW when compared with that with DI water.

Recent orthopteran surveys in the hyper-diverse Borneo, i.e., Brunei Darussalam and Sandakan in Sabah, allow us to review the scaly crickets from the subfamily Mogoplistinae there. We discover and describe the male, as well as formally naming Cycloptiloides bimaculata Tan, Japir Chung, sp. nov. from Sandakan. This species was previously described as sp. 1 in a comprehensive revision by Ingrisch (2006) but only the females were known. We also describe Ectatoderus nigrofasciatus Tan Wahab, sp. nov. from Brunei Darussalam. New locality records are reported for Apterornebius kinabalu Ingrisch, 2006 in Sandakan (Sabah) and Ornebius pullus Ingrisch, 2006 in Belait District (Brunei).

Background: Although acetylsalicylic acid is the most commonly used antithrombotic agent for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular events, residual atherothrombotic risk has prompted a guideline recommendation for the addition of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) or dual pathway inhibition (DPI) in high vascular risk patients. Accordingly, the CONNECT CVD quality enhancement initiative provides a contemporary "snapshot" of the clinical features and antithrombotic management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) patients in Canada., Methods: Canadian cardiologists (49 cardiologists from six provinces) undertook a retrospective chart audit of 10 ASCVD patients in their outpatient practice who met the Cardiovascular Outcomes for People Using Anticoagulation Strategy-like criteria from May 2018 to April 2019., Results: Of the 492 (two cardiologists provided 11 patients) enroled, average age was 70 years, 25% were female, 39% had diabetes and 20% had atrial fibrillation. Prior revascularisation was common (percutaneous coronary artery intervention 61%, coronary artery bypass graft 39%), with 31% having multivessel disease. A total of 47% of patients had a Reduction of Atherothrombosis for Continued Health bleeding score of ≥11 (~2.8% risk of serious bleeding at 2 years). Single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) alone was most commonly used (62%), while 22% were on DAPT alone. In total, 22% were on oral anticoagulation (OAC), with 16% being on non-vitamin K oral anticoagulant alone, 5% on DPI and 1% received triple therapy., Conclusions: In contemporary Canadian clinical practice of stable ASCVD patients, a large number of patients receive antithrombotic therapy other than SAPT. Wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) is the most widely grown cereal crop in the world and is staple food to half the world's population. The current world population is expected to reach 9.8 billion people by 2050, but food production is not expected to keep pace with demand in developing countries. Significant opportunities exist for traditional grain exporters to produce and export greater amounts of wheat to fill the gap. Karnal bunt, however, is a major threat, due to its use as a non-tariff trade barrier by several wheat-importing countries. The cultivation of resistant varieties remains the most cost-effective approach to manage the disease, but in countries that are free of the disease, genetic improvement is difficult due to quarantine restrictions. Here we report a study on pre-emptive breeding designed to identify linked molecular markers, evaluate the prospects of genomic selection as a tool, and prioritise wheat genotypes suitable for use as parents. In a genome-wide association (GWAS) study, we identified six DArTseq markers significantly linked to Karnal bunt resistance, which explained between 7.6 and 29.5% of the observed phenotypic variation. The accuracy of genomic prediction was estimated to vary between 0.53 and 0.56, depending on whether it is based solely on the identified Quantitative trait loci (QTL) markers or the use of genome-wide markers. As genotypes used as parents would be required to possess good yield and phenology, further research was conducted to assess the agronomic value of Karnal bunt resistant germplasm from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). We identified an ideal genotype, ZVS13&#95;385, which possessed similar agronomic attributes to the highly successful Australian wheat variety, Mace. It is phenotypically resistant to Karnal bunt infection (<1% infection) and carried all the favourable alleles detected for resistance in this study.
