- Abstract
Among the most economically relevant and environmentally devastating diseases globally are those caused by Phytophthora species. In Australia, production losses in agriculture and forestry results from several well-known cosmopolitan Phytophthora species and infestation of natural ecosystems by Phytophthora cinnamomi have caused irretrievable loss to biodiversity, especially in proteaceous dominated heathlands. For this review, all available records of Phytophthora in Australia were collated and curated, resulting in a database of 7869 records, of which 2957 have associated molecular data. Australian databases hold records for 99 species, of which 20 are undescribed. Eight species have no records linked to molecular data, and their presence in Australia is considered doubtful. The 99 species reside in 10 of the 12 clades recognised within the complete phylogeny of Phytophthora. The review includes discussion on each of these species? status and additional information provided for another 29 species of concern. The first species reported in Australia in 1900 was Phytophthora infestans. By 2000, 27 species were known, predominantly from agriculture. The significant increase in species reported in the subsequent 20 years has coincided with extensive surveys in natural ecosystems coupled with molecular taxonomy and the recognition of numerous new phylogenetically distinct but morphologically similar species. Routine and targeted surveys within Australian natural ecosystems have resulted in the description of 27 species since 2009. Due to the new species descriptions over the last 20 years, many older records have been reclassified based on molecular identification. The distribution of records is skewed toward regions with considerable activity in high productivity agriculture, horticulture and forestry, and native vegetation at risk from P. cinnamomi. Native and exotic hosts of different Phytophthora species are found throughout the phylogeny; however, species from clad

- Abstract
Recent publications have argued that there are potentially serious consequences for researchers in recognising distinct genera in the terminal fusarioid clade of the family Nectriaceae. Thus, an alternate hypothesis, namely a very broad concept of the genus Fusarium was proposed. In doing so, however, a significant body of data that supports distinct genera in Nectriaceae based on morphology, biology, and phylogeny is disregarded. A DNA phylogeny based on 19 orthologous protein-coding genes was presented to support a very broad concept of Fusarium at the F1 node in Nectriaceae. Here, we demonstrate that re-analyses of this dataset show that all 19 genes support the F3 node that represents Fusarium sensu stricto as defined by F. sambucinum (sexual morph synonym Gibberella pulicaris). The backbone of the phylogeny is resolved by the concatenated alignment, but only six of the 19 genes fully support the F1 node, representing the broad circumscription of Fusarium. Furthermore, a re-analysis of the concatenated dataset revealed alternate topologies in different phylogenetic algorithms, highlighting the deep divergence and unresolved placement of various Nectriaceae lineages proposed as members of Fusarium. Species of Fusarium s. str. are characterised by Gibberella sexual morphs, asexual morphs with thin- or thick-walled macroconidia that have variously shaped apical and basal cells, and trichothecene mycotoxin production, which separates them from other fusarioid genera. Here we show that the Wollenweber concept of Fusarium presently accounts for 20 segregate genera with clear-cut synapomorphic traits, and that fusarioid macroconidia represent a character that has been gained or lost multiple times throughout Nectriaceae. Thus, the very broad circumscription of Fusarium is blurry and without apparent synapomorphies, and does not include all genera with fusarium-like macroconidia, which are spread throughout Nectriaceae (e.g., Cosmosporella, Macroconia, Microcera). Edwardsiella tarda is a Gram-negative enteric bacterium affecting both animals and humans. Recently, a type III secretion system (TESS) was found in Ed. tarda. Such systems are generally used by bacterial pathogens to deliver virulence factors into host cells to subvert normal cell functions. Genome-walking was performed from the eseB and esrB genes (homologues of Salmonella sseB and ssrB, respectively) identified in previous studies, to determine the sequences of the TTSS. Thirty-five ORFs were identified which encode the TTSS apparatus, chaperones, effectors and regulators. Mutants affected in genes representing each category were generated and found to have decreased survival and growth in fish phagocytes. L[D.sub.50] values of the mutants were increased by at least 10-fold in comparison to those of the wild-type strain. The adherence and invasion rates of the esrA and esrB mutants were enhanced while those of the other mutants remained similar to the wild-type. The eseC and eseD mutants showed slight autoaggregation in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium, whereas the rest of the mutants failed to autoaggregate. Regulation of the TESS was found to involve the two-component regulatory system esrA-esrB. This study showed that the TTSS is important for Ed. tarda pathogenesis. An understanding of this system will provide greater insight into the virulence mechanisms of this bacterial pathogen.

Edwardsiella tarda mutants have been found to be defective in siderophore production, motility, catalase activity and serum resistance, factors which may correlate with virulence in fish. It may be that disrupting genes involved in these things could attenuate the pathogen and impair ability to infect fish. Ed. tarda is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes a systemic fish infection, edwandsiellosis. Virulence factors and genetic determinants have now been studied by using TnphoA transposon mutagenesis to set up a library of 440 alkaline phosphatase fusion mutants from 400,000 transconjugants from Ed. tarda PPD 130/91.

- Abstract
The Botryosphaeriales, and in particular the Botryosphaeriaceae, are a well-studied group of fungi best known for the canker diseases they cause on woody hosts especially in stressed or damaged trees. Australian Plant Pathology herbaria contain many records for this group, but due to considerable taxonomic changes over the past decade, many of the species names have since been reclassified. In this article we used all published records with available sequence data of the Botryosphaeriaceae in Australia to examine the distribution and host range of these taxa. There are 24 genera encompassing 222 species in the Botryosphaeriaceae; 9 genera and 62 species have been recorded in Australia. Some genera such as Neoscytalidium are only found in warm, humid climates while Dothiorella species are more common in temperate climates. There were species, such as Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Neofusicoccum parvum and Botryosphaeria dothidea, which had a wide host range with many records. However, there were also several species found only in one location on a single host. While systematic data collection is still required, the information presented here provides a baseline of species present in Australia and will underpin future studies into this group of important pathogens.

- Abstract
The Botryosphaeriaceae is one of the most widespread and cosmopolitan endophytic group of fungi. However, the species of this group can cause severe disease when the hosts are under stressful conditions. The aim of this study was to identify living cultures from the Botryosphaeriaceae family preserved in the Queensland and Victorian Plant Pathology Herbaria using DNA sequence analyses. The 51 isolates were collected between 1971 and 2017, from 35 different host genera, with the dominant host genera being Mangifera (11 isolates), Acacia (10), and Persea (5). Multilocus sequence analyses resulted in the re-identification of 41 isolates to the genera Botryosphaeria (2 isolates), Diplodia (4), Dothiorella (1), Lasiodiplodia (19), and Neofusicoccum (15), as well as some that belonged to genera outside of the Botryosphaeriaceae (10). New records for Australia were Botryosphaeria sinensis, Diplodia alatafructa, Lasiodiplodia gonubiensis, Neofusicoccum cryptoaustrale, and N. mangroviorum. These were identified as a result of a workshop organised by the Subcommittee on Plant Health Diagnostics. The results of this study provide the fundamental information regarding the diversity of Botryosphaeriaceae species present in Australian.

- Abstract
Mycoleptodiscus includes plant pathogens, animal opportunists, saprobic and endophytic fungi. The present study presents the first molecular phylogeny and revision of the genus based on four loci, including ITS, LSU, rpb2, and tef1. An extensive collection of Mycoleptodiscus cultures, including ex-type strains from the CBS, IMI, MUCL, BRIP, clinical isolates from the USA, and fresh isolates from Brazil and Spain, was studied morphologically and phylogenetically to resolve their taxonomy. The study showed that Mycoleptodiscus sensu lato is polyphyletic. Phylogenetic analysis places Mycoleptodiscus in Muyocopronales (Dothideomycetes), together with Arxiella, Leptodiscella, Muyocopron, Neocochlearomyces, and Paramycoleptodiscus. Mycoleptodiscus terrestris, the type species, and M. sphaericus are reduced to synonyms, and one new species is introduced, M. suttonii. Mycoleptodiscus atromaculans, M. coloratus, M. freycinetiae, M. geniculatus, M. indicus, M. lateralis (including M. unilateralis and M. variabilis as its synonyms) and M. taiwanensis belong to Muyocopron (Muyocopronales, Dothideomycetes), and M. affinis, and M. lunatus to Omnidemptus (Magnaporthales, Sordariomycetes). Based on phylogenetic analyses we propose Muyocopron alcornii sp. nov., a fungus associated with leaf spots on Epidendrum sp. (Orchidaceae) in Australia, Muyocopron zamiae sp. nov. associated with leaf spots on Zamia (Zamiaceae) in the USA, and Omnidemptus graminis sp. nov. isolated from a grass (Poaceae) in Spain. Furthermore, Neomycoleptodiscus venezuelense gen. & sp. nov. is introduced for a genus similar to Mycoleptodiscus in Muyocopronaceae.
