Networked learning provides opportunities for learners to develop their critical thinking, an important 21st century competency, through dialogue with fellow learners to consider other perspectives and negotiate and critique ideas and arguments. However, much extant literature has not examined networked learning environments among younger learners nor the optimal conditions for enhancing critical thinking. Therefore, a study was carried out to investigate these conditions. A learning analytics networked learning environment was designed and 264 secondary three students participated in the 10-week long intervention as part of their English curriculum. Individual and collective social network metrics, critical reading scores, and self-reported survey data were used to quantitatively evaluate students' critical reading performance in relation to their participation in networked learning. Results highlight several optimal conditions, notably that it is not just participation of the learner that enhances critical thinking but the learners' reciprocity in replying and the distance of those posts in the network. Discussions and implications of the findings follow to provide insightful understanding of how the rich and complex settings of networked learning can enhance critical thinking capacities in secondary schooling.

Many studies have been conducted on the development of young children; however, not many have explored the cognitive processes of prereaders. The eye-tracker has been used with success to investigate the cognitive processes of young children abroad, but such studies are lacking in Malaysia. This study used an experimental procedure created with eye-tracking technology on 22 prereaders (aged 5 to 6) in a Malaysian kindergarten. The prereaders were exposed to four conditions: (1) listening to narration and viewing a congruent picture with text, (2) listening to narration and viewing an incongruent picture with text, (3) viewing a picture with text without narration, and (4) listening to narration and viewing a text. The main objective of this project is to test which content of pictures helps the students understand the narration and the text, and how they use visual attention to build a better understanding. The findings revealed that children strongly preferred pictures to texts, but when the narration was not present, they spent more time looking at the text.

The affordances of learning analytics (LA) tools and solutions are being increasingly harnessed for enhancing 21st century pedagogical and learning strategies and outcomes. However, use cases and empirical understandings of students' experiences with LA tools and environments aimed at fostering 21st century literacies, especially in the K-12 schooling sector and in Asian education contexts remain relatively scarce in the field. Our paper addresses this knowledge gap in two ways. First, we present a first iteration design of a computer-supported collaborative critical reading and LA environment, WiREAD, and its 16-week implementation in a Singapore high school. Second, we foreground students' evaluative accounts of the benefits and drawbacks associated with this techno-pedagogical innovation. Our analysis of students' collective sense-making pointed to a number of potentialities and perils associated with the design and use of LA dashboards. Positives included (1) fostering greater self-awareness, reflective and self-regulatory learning dispositions, (2) enhancing learning motivation and engagement, and (3) nurturing connective literacy among students. The motivational value of peer-referenced LA visualisations for stimulating healthy competition and game-like learning was identified, alongside the perils of these serving to demoralise, pressurise and trigger complacency in learners. By focusing on students' experiences and interpretations of how the LA dashboard visualizations impacted their learning motivation and outcomes, this paper aims to shed insights into the pedagogical complexities of designing LA that considers the voices of learners as a critical stakeholder group. This paper reports a survey conducted with the intention of responding to recent calls for more evidence on the experiences of SENA teachers since implementation of policies around inclusive education. The data provide a tentative information about perceptions among teachers currently employed by the Ministry of Education as SENA teachers. The data were collected through the use of questionnaires distributed during a series of professional development workshops held with SENA teachers throughout the country.

Gratitude, like other positive emotions, has been theorized to help individuals build psychological and social resources and promote resilience and well-being. Some scholars suggest that gratitude may not generate positive outcomes in all cultures. In this study, we examined the relationship of gratitude with school resilience and school well-being, and the potential mediating role of relatedness with key social partners within an Asian cultural context. Participants in the study were 190 secondary students attending one school in Singapore. Results revealed that gratitude was positively associated with school resilience; relatedness with significant others partially mediated this association. The final model also showed a significant sequential pathway from gratitude to relatedness (with significant others), then to school resilience and then to school well-being. Practical implications and limitations of this study are presented.

A 47-year-old female developed a reddish swelling of the right medial canthus over 3 months. On examination, a red, firm mass, involving the right medial canthal and extending into the inferior fornix was present and the globe was displaced upwards and inwards. A staging MRI scan confirmed a lacrimal sac lesion with anterior orbit extension. After an equivocal biopsy, the patient underwent debulking surgery. Histology showed a lacrimal sac invasive adenosquamous carcinoma, comprising poorly differentiated squamous carcinoma and invasive adenocarcinoma areas arranged in a tubulo-glandular pattern. The adenocarcinoma harboured numerous cilia. p16 showed block positivity of both components and micro-dissected tissue from both areas showed the presence of HPV16 DNA by PCR. This is the first description of ciliated adenosquamous carcinoma of the lacrimal sac and this finding is placed into the context of what is known about ciliated head and neck adenosquamous carcinomas and the role of high-risk HPV. Background Dermatology grand rounds and clinical conferences often include patient viewing sessions, during which groups of dermatologists and trainees see and discuss patient cases.Objective To understand experiences and attitudes of patients participating in patient viewing sessions.Methods Questionnaires were given to patients immediately before and after patient viewing sessions and by mail 3 months after participating in patient viewing sessions.Results Fifty one individuals responded to the survey during patient viewing sessions and 15 (29.4%) responded to the delayed survey three months after the patient viewing session. Of these, 98% and 80% of patients responded that grand rounds met their expectations in the immediate and 3 month surveys, respectively.Conclusions Dermatology patient viewing sessions are valuable and satisfying for patients.

Teamwork, one of the core competencies for the twenty-first century learner, is a critical skill for work and learning. However, assessing teamwork is complex, in particular, developing a measure of teamwork that is domain-generic and applicable across a wide range of learners. This paper documents one such study that leverages technology to help provide a formative assessment of teamwork. It focuses on the self and peer ratings of a teamwork measure and a pedagogical method, which was trialled as a teamwork awareness programme in a mainstream Secondary School in Singapore. This teamwork awareness programme was incorporated into the school's Interdisciplinary Project Work curriculum. Findings of students' experiences of the programme are described. The teamwork competency dimension of "team emotional support" was rated highest amongst students. Also, students' report gains in teamwork awareness, mixed engagement in reflective practices, and on the real-world relevancy of the programme. Discussions and implications of the findings follow.

This study aimed to develop and examine the effects of a socially oriented gratitude intervention (SOGI) on secondary students' gratitude level and interpersonal relationships. To these ends, we used a quasi-experimental research design: The experimental group (n = 46) participated in the two-week intervention during a class subject focusing on character and citizenship education (CCE) while the wait-list control group (n = 57) went on with regular CCE activities. All participants completed a questionnaire a week before and a month after the implementation of the SOGI and control activities. The changes in relatedness scores were statistically significant in relation to parents and peers, but not in relation to teachers. In particular, the experimental group generally maintained the quality of their relationship with their parents and peers while the control group reported a decline in these relationship domains. The change in gratitude levels did not differ significantly between the experimental group and control group, but the effect size associated with the mean gratitude change of the experimental group was found to be larger than that of the control group and comparable to what is commonly reported in other published gratitude intervention studies. The students' feedback reveals the social, cognitive and affective benefits of the SOGI.

This study explored the relative salience of students' personal strengths and teacher support in predicting academic risk status. The participants were Secondary One (S1, Grade Seven) students from Singapore who scored below the cohort's mean score in a national test administered at the end of primary education, and were identified as low risk (n = 309) or high risk (n = 396), based on their S1 achievement score in the English Language subject. Logistic regression analysis was conducted with academic risk status as criterion variable and the following potential predictors: students' background variables (i.e. socio-economic status, cognitive ability and initial achievement), personal strengths, teacher-student relatedness, and teacher autonomy and competence support. After controlling for the effects of the students' background variables, teacher trust emerged as the strongest (negative) and most stable predictor of high-risk status; teacher alienation and teacher-student communication were found as significant positive predictors of students' placement in the high-risk group.

This paper presents an ethnographic study of the out of school literacy practices of children living in residential care in Malaysia. Although residential homes generate much publicity, especially during the festive seasons, not much is known about the children living within the confines of these homes. Even more lacking is research on their literacy practices, despite the embeddedness of literacy in the everyday lives of these children, which includes formal schooling, after-school tuition classes and devotion sessions with volunteers.

Research has consistently shown that children in residential care fall behind at school. This proves a great challenge for educators who have to cater to the students' needs to ensure no one is left behind. Studies investigating family literacy practices of different social classes show a positive implication if the home literacy practices are similar to the school's literacy practices. In order to discover if there is a disconnect between formal schooling and outside of school, this paper describes the out-of-school literacy practices of children living under the Malaysian residential care system.
