In this paper, we investigate a class of inviscid generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations on the half-plane with a rigid boundary. Compared to the Biot-Savart law in the vorticity form of the 2D Euler equation, the velocity formula here includes an additional Fourier multiplier operator $m(\Lambda)$. When $m(\Lambda) = \Lambda^\alpha$, where $\Lambda = (-\Delta)^{1/2}$ and $\alpha\in (0,2)$, the equation reduces to the well-known $\alpha$-SQG equation. Finite-time singularity formation for patch solutions to the $\alpha$-SQG equation was famously discovered by Kiselev, Ryzhik, Yao, and Zlato\v{s} [Ann. Math., 184 (2016), pp. 909-948]. We establish finite-time singularity formation for patch solutions to the generalized SQG equations under the Osgood condition \[\int_2^\infty \frac{1}{r (\log r) m(r)} dr < \infty\] along with some additional mild conditions. Notably, our result fills the gap between the globally well-posed 2D Euler equation ($\alpha = 0$) and the $\alpha$-SQG equation ($\alpha > 0$). Furthermore, in line with Elgindi's global regularity results for 2D Loglog-Euler type equations [Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., 211 (2014), pp. 965-990], our findings suggest that the Osgood condition serves as a sharp threshold that distinguishes global regularity and finite-time singularity in these models. In addition, we generalize the local regularity and finite-time singularity results for patch solutions to the $\alpha$-SQG equation, as established by Gancedo and Patel [Ann. PDE, 7 (2021), no. 1, Art. no. 4], extending them to cases where $m(r)$ behaves like $r^\alpha$ near infinity but does not have an explicit formulation., Comment: 62 pages, 4 figures

We present a new family of second-order traffic flow models, extending the Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) model to incorporate nonlocal interactions. Our model includes a specific nonlocal Arrhenius-type look-ahead slowdown factor. We establish both local and global well-posedness theories for these nonlocal ARZ models. In contrast to the local ARZ model, where generic smooth initial data typically lead to finite-time shock formation, we show that our nonlocal ARZ model exhibits global regularity for a class of smooth subcritical initial data. Our result highlights the potential of nonlocal interactions to mitigate shock formations in second-order traffic flow models. Our analytical approach relies on investigating phase plane dynamics. We study the Cauchy problem of the compressible Euler system with strongly singular velocity alignment. We establish a global well-posedness theory for the system with small smooth initial data. Additionally, we derive asymptotic emergent behaviors for the system, providing time decay estimates with optimal decay rates. Notably, the optimal decay rate we obtain does not align with the corresponding fractional heat equation within our considered range, where the parameter $\alpha\in(0,1)$. We investigate a class of Vlasov-type kinetic flocking models featuring nonlinear velocity alignment. Our primary objective is to rigorously derive the hydrodynamic limit leading to the compressible Euler system with nonlinear alignment. This study builds upon the work by Figalli and Kang [Anal. PDE, 12(3), 843-866, 2018], which addressed the scenario of linear velocity alignment using the relative entropy method. The introduction of nonlinearity gives rise to an additional discrepancy in the alignment term during the limiting process. To effectively handle this discrepancy, we employ the monokinetic ansatz in conjunction with the relative entropy approach. Furthermore, our analysis reveals distinct nonlinear alignment behaviors between the kinetic and hydrodynamic systems, particularly evident in the isothermal regime., Comment: 27 pages

We investigate global solutions to the Euler-alignment system in $d$ dimensions with unidirectional flows and strongly singular communication protocols $\phi(x) = |x|^{-(d+\alpha)}$ for $\alpha \in (0,2)$. Our paper establishes global regularity results in both the subcritical regime $1<\alpha<2$ and the critical regime $\alpha=1$. Notably, when $\alpha=1$, the system exhibits a critical scaling similar to the critical quasi-geostrophic equation. To achieve global well-posedness, we employ a novel method based on propagating the modulus of continuity. Our approach introduces the concept of simultaneously propagating multiple moduli of continuity, which allows us to effectively handle the system of two equations with critical scaling. We show that the locations where finite- and infinite-time clustering occurs for the 1D Euler-alignment system can be determined using only the initial data. Our present work provides the first results on the structure of the finite-time singularity set and asymptotic clusters associated to a weak solution. This paper presents a class of one-dimensional cellular automata (CA) models on traffic flows, featuring nonlocal look-ahead interactions. We develop kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) algorithms to simulate the dynamics. The standard KMC method can be inefficient for models with global interactions. We design an accelerated KMC method to reduce the computational complexity in the evaluation of the nonlocal transition rates. We study a class of traffic flow models with nonlocal look-ahead interactions. The global regularity of solutions depend on the initial data. We obtain sharp critical threshold conditions that distinguish the initial data into a trichotomy: subcritical initial conditions lead to global smooth solutions, while two types of supercritical initial conditions lead to two kinds of finite time shock formations. This paper is concerned with the global wellposedness of the Euler-Poisson-alignment (EPA) system. This system arises from collective dynamics, and features two types of nonlocal interactions: the repulsive electric force and the alignment force. It is known that the repulsive electric force generates oscillatory solutions, which is difficult to be controlled by the nonlocal alignment force using conventional comparison principles. We construct \emph{invariant regions} such that the solution trajectories cannot exit, and therefore obtain global wellposedness for subcritical initial data that lie in the invariant regions. Supercritical regions of initial data are also derived which leads to finite-time singularity formations. To handle the oscillation and the nonlocality, we introduce a new way to construct invariant regions piece by piece in the phase plane of a reformulation of the EPA system. Our result is extended to the case when the alignment force is weakly singular. The singularity leads to the loss of a priori bounds crucial in our analysis. With the help of improved estimates on the nonlocal quantities, we design non-trivial invariant regions that guarantee global wellposedness of the EPA system with weakly singular alignment interactions., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures

We develop a global wellposedness theory for weak solutions to the 1D Euler-alignment system with measure-valued density, bounded velocity, and locally integrable communication protocol. A satisfactory understanding of the low-regularity theory is an issue of pressing interest, as smooth solutions may lose regularity in finite time. However, no such theory currently exists except for a very special class of alignment interactions. We show that the dynamics of the 1D Euler-alignment system can be effectively described by a nonlocal scalar balance law, the entropy conditions of which serves as an entropic selection principle that determines a unique weak solution of the Euler-alignment system. Moreover, the distinguished weak solution of the system can be approximated by the sticky particle Cucker--Smale dynamics. Our approach is inspired by the work of Brenier and Grenier [SIAM J. Numer. We study the global wellposedness of the Euler-Monge-Amp\`ere (EMA) system. We obtain a sharp, explicit critical threshold in the space of initial configurations which guarantees the global regularity of EMA system with radially symmetric initial data. The result is obtained using two independent approaches -- one using spectral dynamics of Liu & Tadmor [Comm. Math. Physics 228(3):435-466, 2002] and another based on the geometric approach of Brenier & Loeper [Geom. Funct. Analysis 14(6):1182--1218, 2004]. The results are extended to 2D radial EMA with swirl.

The question about the behavior of gaps between zeros of polynomials under differentiation is classical and goes back to Marcel Riesz. In this paper, we analyze a nonlocal nonlinear partial differential equation formally derived by Stefan Steinerberger to model dynamics of roots of polynomials under differentiation. Interestingly, the same equation has also been recently obtained formally by Dimitri Shlyakhtenko and Terence Tao as the evolution equation for free fractional convolution of a measure - an object in free probability that is also related to minor processes for random matrices. The partial differential equation bears striking resemblance to hydrodynamic models used to describe the collective behavior of agents (such as birds, fish or robots) in mathematical biology. We consider periodic setting and show global regularity and exponential in time convergence to uniform density for solutions corresponding to strictly positive smooth initial data. In the second part of the paper we connect rigorously solutions of the Steinerberger's PDE and evolution of roots under differentiation for a class of trigonometric polynomials. Namely, we prove that the distribution of the zeros of the derivatives of a polynomial and the corresponding solutions of the PDE remain close for all times. The global in time control follows from the analysis of the propagation of errors equation, which turns out to be a nonlinear fractional heat equation with the main term similar to the modulated discretized fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^{1/2}$., Comment: 87 Pages

We study the global wellposedness of pressure-less Eulerian dynamics in multi-dimensions, with radially symmetric data. Compared with the 1D system, a major difference in multi-dimensional Eulerian dynamics is the presence of the spectral gap, which is difficult to control in general. We propose a new pair of scalar quantities that provides a significant better control of the spectral gap. Two applications are presented. We study one-dimensional Eulerian dynamics with nonlocal alignment interactions, featuring strong short-range alignment, and long-range misalignment. Compared with the well-studied Euler-alignment system, the presence of the misalignment brings different behaviors of the solutions, including the possible creation of vacuum at infinite time, which destabilizes the solutions. This paper presents a new class of one-dimensional (1D) traffic models with look-ahead rules that take into account of two effects: nonlocal slow-down effect and right-skewed non-concave asymmetry in the fundamental diagram. The proposed 1D cellular automata (CA) models with the Arrhenius type look-ahead interactions implement stochastic rules for cars' movement following the configuration of the traffic ahead of each car. In particular, we take two different look-ahead rules: one is based on the distance from the car under consideration to the car in front of it; the other one depends on the car density ahead. Both rules feature a novel idea of multiple moves, which plays a key role in recovering the non-concave flux in the macroscopic dynamics. Through a semi-discrete mesoscopic stochastic process, we derive the coarse-grained macroscopic dynamics of the CA model. We also design a numerical scheme to simulate the proposed CA models with an efficient list-based kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) algorithm. Our results show that the fluxes of the KMC simulations agree with the coarse-grained macroscopic averaged fluxes for the different look-ahead rules under various parameter settings., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

We study the pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal alignment interactions, which arises as a macroscopic representation of complex biological systems modeling animal flocks. For such Euler-Alignment system with bounded interactions, a critical threshold phenomenon is proved by Tadmor-Tan in 2014, where global regularity depends on initial data. With strongly singular interactions, global regularity is obtained by Do-Kiselev-Ryzhik-Tan in 2018, for all initial data. We consider the remaining case when the interaction is weakly singular. We show a critical threshold, similar to the system with bounded interaction. We study a 1D fluid mechanics model with nonlocal velocity. The equation can be viewed as a fractional porous medium flow, a 1D model of the quasi-geostrophic equation, and also a special case of Euler-Alignment system. For strictly positive smooth initial data, global regularity has been proved by Do, Kiselev, Ryzhik and Tan. We construct a family of non-negative smooth initial data so that solution loses $C^1$ regularity. Our result indicates that strict positivity is a critical condition to ensure global regularity of the system. The Euler-Poisson-Alignment (EPA) system appears in mathematical biology and is used to model, in a hydrodynamic limit, a set agents interacting through mutual attraction/repulsion as well as alignment forces. We consider one-dimensional EPA system with a class of singular alignment terms as well as natural attraction/repulsion terms. The singularity of the alignment kernel produces an interesting effect regularizing the solutions of the equation and leading to global regularity for wide range of initial data. This was recently observed in the paper by Do, Kiselev, Ryzhik and Tan. Our goal in this paper is to generalize the result and to incorporate the attractive/repulsive potential. We propose a new class of asymptotic preserving schemes to solve kinetic equations with mono-kinetic singular limit. The main idea to deal with the singularity is to transform the equations by appropriate scalings in velocity. In particular, we study two biologically related kinetic systems. We derive the scaling factors and prove that the rescaled solution does not have a singular limit, under appropriate spatial non-oscillatory assumptions, which can be verified numerically by a newly developed asymptotic preserving scheme. We study a pressureless Euler system with a nonlinear density-dependent alignment term, originating in the Cucker-Smale swarming models. The alignment term is dissipative in the sense that it tends to equilibrate the velocities. Its density dependence is natural: the alignment rate increases in the areas of high density due to species discomfort. The diffusive term has the order of a fractional Laplacian $(-\partial_{xx})^{\alpha/2}$, $\alpha \in (0, 1)$. The corresponding Burgers equation with a linear dissipation of this type develops shocks in a finite time. We show that the alignment nonlinearity enhances the dissipation, and the solutions are globally regular for all $\alpha \in (0, 1)$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of such regularization due to the non-local nonlinear modulation of dissipation., Comment: 34 pages

In recent work of Luo and Hou, a new scenario for finite time blow up in solutions of 3D Euler equation has been proposed. The scenario involves a ring of hyperbolic points of the flow located at the boundary of a cylinder. In this paper, we propose a two dimensional model that we call "hyperbolic Boussinesq system". This model is designed to provide insight into the hyperbolic point blow up scenario. The model features an incompressible velocity vector field, a simplified Biot-Savart law, and a simplified term modeling buoyancy. We include alignment interactions in a well-studied first-order attractive-repulsive macroscopic model for aggregation. The distinctive feature of the extended model is that the equation that specifies the velocity in terms of the population density, becomes {\em implicit}, and can have non-unique solutions. We investigate the well-posedness of the model and show rigorously how it can be obtained as a macroscopic limit of a second-order kinetic equation. We work within the space of probability measures with compact support and use mass transportation ideas and the characteristic method as essential tools in the analysis. A discretization procedure that parallels the analysis is formulated and implemented numerically in one and two dimensions.

We study the critical thresholds for the compressible pressureless Euler equations with pairwise attractive or repulsive interaction forces and non-local alignment forces in velocity in one dimension. We provide a complete description for the critical threshold to the system without interaction forces leading to a sharp dichotomy condition between global in time existence or finite-time blow-up of strong solutions. When the interaction forces are considered, we also give a classification of the critical thresholds according to the different type of interaction forces. We also analyze conditions for global in time existence when the repulsion is modeled by the isothermal pressure law.

In this work, we discuss kinetic descriptions of flocking models, of the so-called Cucker-Smale and Motsch-Tadmor types. These models are given by Vlasov-type equations where the interactions taken into account are only given long-range bi-particles interaction potential. We introduce a new exact rescaling velocity method, inspired by a recent work of Filbet and Rey, allowing to observe numerically the flocking behavior of the solutions to these equations, without a need of remeshing or taking a very fine grid in the velocity space. To stabilize the exact method, we also introduce a modification of the classical upwind finite volume scheme which preserves the physical properties of the solution, such as momentum conservation., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We study kinetic representations of flocking models. They arise from agent-based models for self-organized dynamics, such as Cucker-Smale and Motsch-Tadmor models. We prove flocking behavior for the kinetic descriptions of flocking systems, which indicates a concentration in velocity variable in infinite time. We propose a discontinuous Galerkin method to treat the asymptotic $\delta$-singularity, and construct high order positive preserving scheme to solve kinetic flocking systems.

We study the large-time behavior of Eulerian systems augmented with non-local alignment. Such systems arise as hydrodynamic descriptions of agent-based models for self-organized dynamics, e.g., Cucker-Smale and Motsch-Tadmor models \cite{CS,MT}. We prove that in analogy with the agent-based models, the presence of non-local alignment enforces \emph{strong} solutions to self-organize into a macroscopic flock. This then raises the question of existence of such strong solutions. We address this question in one- and two-dimensional setups, proving global regularity for \emph{sub-critical} initial data. Indeed, we show that there exist \emph{critical thresholds} in the phase space of initial configuration which dictate the global regularity vs. a finite time blow-up. In particular, we explore the regularity of nonlocal alignment in the presence of vacuum.
