Ixodid ticks, such as Ixodes ovatus and Haemaphysalis flava, are important vectors of tick-borne diseases in Japan, such as Japanese spotted fever caused by Rickettsia japonica. This study describes the Rickettsia infection rates influenced by the population genetic structure of I.ovatus and H. flava along an altitudinal gradient. A total of 346 adult I. ovatus and 243 H. flava were analyzed for the presence of Rickettsia by nested PCR targeting the 17kDA, gltA, rOmpA, and rOmpB genes. The population genetic structure was analyzed utilizing the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1) marker. The Rickettsia infection rates were 13.26% in I. ovatus and 6.17% in H. flava. For I. ovatus, the global FST value revealed significant genetic differentiation among the different populations, whereas H. flava showed non-significant genetic differentiation. The cox1 I. ovatus cluster dendrogram showed two cluster groups, while the haplotype network and phylogenetic tree showed three genetic groups. A significant difference was observed in Rickettsia infection rates and mean altitude per group between the two cluster groups and the three genetic groups identified within I. ovatus. No significant differences were found in the mean altitude or Rickettsia infection rates of H. flava. Our results suggest a potential correlation between the low gene flow in I. ovatus populations and the spatially heterogeneous Rickettsia infection rates observed along the altitudinal gradient. This information can be used in understanding the relationship between the tick vector, its pathogen, and environmental factors, such as altitude, and for the control of tick-borne diseases in Japan. Movements of two individual Bryde's whales ( Balaenoptera edeni) were recorded using satellite-monitored radio tags in the offshore western North Pacific where no such data had been recorded. One individual was recorded for 13 days 4 h 57 min from 13 to 26 July 2006. The total traveled distance of the individual was 917.3 km with a mean speed of 2.9 km/h. The other individual was recorded for 20 days 5 h 5 min from 24 July to 13 August 2008. The total traveled distance of the individual was 2649.7 km with a mean speed of 5.5 km/h. It has been documented that the subarctic-subtropical transition area (around 40°N) is one of the feeding areas of Bryde's whales in summer. However, the results revealed that some individual Bryde's whales moved from the subarctic-subtropical transition area to the subtropical area even in summer. The observation indicated Bryde's whales did not stay in a feeding area persistently throughout summer. This study provides the first information regarding the continuous movement of Bryde's whales in the offshore western North Pacific in summer which enhances understanding of their life history. Gathering information on the diet composition of baleen whales at different temporal scales is useful for investigating their feeding habits. Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera edeni) and sei whales (B. borealis) are known to feed on crustaceans and pelagic fish in their western North Pacific feeding grounds; however, their feeding habits before arriving in the feeding area are not known. This study clarified the feeding habits of these two whale species by simultaneously analyzing nitrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios and stomach contents of individuals captured in the western North Pacific in 2015 and 2016. A stable isotope Bayesian mixed-model was used to estimate prey composition. The results showed clear temporal differences in the feeding habits of both whales. Specifically, Bryde's whales fed primarily on krill and pelagic and mesopelagic fishes as they migrated northwards, and then fed exclusively on krill during the summer. Sei whales fed on copepods when they arrived in the subarctic region before shifting to pelagic fish species in the summer. The annual trend in energy storage in the Antarctic minke whale was examined using catch data from all 18 survey years in the Japanese Whale Research Program (JARPA). Regression analyses clearly showed that blubber thickness, girth and fat weight have been decreasing for nearly 2 decades. The decrease per year is estimated at approximately 0.02 cm for mid-lateral blubber thickness and 17 kg for fat weight, corresponding to 9% for both measurements over the 18-year period. Furthermore, “date”, “extent of diatom adhesion”, “sex”, “body length”, “fetus length”, “latitude”, “age” and “longitude” were all identified as partially independent predictors of blubber thickness. The direct interpretation of this substantial decline in energy storage in terms of food availability is difficult, since no long-term krill abundance series is available. A study of common minke and Bryde's whales was conducted in the western North Pacific in the 2000 and 2001 summer seasons to estimate prey selection of cetaceans as this is an important parameter in ecosystem models. Whale sighting and sampling surveys and prey surveys using quantitative echosounder and mid-water trawl were carried out concurrently in the study. Biomasses of Japanese anchovy, walleye pollock and krill, which were major prey species of common minke and Bryde's whales, were estimated using an echosounder. The results suggested that common minke whale showed prey selection for Japanese anchovy while they seemed to avoid krill in both the offshore and coastal regions and walleye pollock in the continental shelf region. Selection for shoaling pelagic fish was similar to that in the eastern North Atlantic. The forestomach contents of 498 minke whales Balaenoptera acutorostrata sampled in the Northwestern Pacific from May to September through the 1994–1999 JARPN surveys, were analysed. Sixteen prey species consisting of 1 copepod, 4 euphausiids, 1 squid, and 10 fishes were identified. The minke whale in the Northwestern Pacific is a swallowing, feeding-type species. It feeds on swarming zooplankton and schooling fishes, suggesting that minke whales pursue single prey-species aggregations. The results showed geographical and seasonal changes of prey species. On the Pacific side of Japan, Japanese anchovy was the most important prey species in May and June, while Pacific saury was most important in July and August. Walleye pollock was also an important prey species during June and September in coastal waters, over the continental shelf. In the southern Okhotsk Sea krill was the most important prey species in July and August. These changes probably reflect changes in the availability of the prey species in these areas. The article discusses a study about predation on the minimal armhook squid by minke whales. The data were obtained from a total of 200 minke whales collected from May to September in 2004 and 2005 during surveys conducted over the entire area between the Pacific coast of northern Japan, and in the International Whaling Commission's defined sub-Areas 7, 8 and 9, excluding Russian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The study found that the minke whales fed on minimal armhook squid in a relatively restricted area near the Emperor Seamounts, irrespective of the broad research area.

Data are limited on the incidence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) reinfection in children. This population-based cohort study in Niigata, Japan from January to November 2022 demonstrated the incidence of reinfection was 1337/48 099 (2.8%), and the hazard ratio for reinfection in vaccinated children was 0.29 (95% confidence interval, 0.20–0.40). Ethanolamine plasmalogens (EPls) are the only known ligands of a novel receptor, G protein‐coupled receptor 61, and bovine brain EPls stimulate follicle‐stimulating hormone (FSH) but not luteinizing hormone (LH), secreted by bovine gonadotrophs. We hypothesized that the brain EPls of whales (Balaenoptera edeni), another Cetartiodactyla with at least twice the lifespan of bovines, could stimulate FSH secretion by gonadotrophs. To test this hypothesis, bovine gonadotrophs (from approximately 2‐year‐old Japanese Black heifers) were cultured for 3.5 days and treated with increasing concentrations of brain EP1s from whales (approximately 22 years old). FSH and LH secretion was stimulated by all tested concentrations of whale EPls (p < 0.05). To clarify the important differences between bovine and whale EPls, we utilized two‐dimensional liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, which revealed 35 peaks. Among them, we observed significant differences between 12 EPl molecular species. Additionally, we identified differentially expressed genes for enzymes involved in EPl synthesis or degradation in the hypothalamus of young heifers and old cows (approximately 10 years old) as compared to whales (approximately 28 years old) via deep sequencing of the transcriptome. Objective: This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of an at-risk population living in Niigata prefecture regarding tick-borne diseases (TBDs) and preventive strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted to assess the KAP of the community. Results: In total, 186 responses were received. Among the respondents, 130 (69·9%) were men, and the mean age was 51.1 (14·3). Nine (4·8%) respondents reported having experienced tick bites. Of the respondents, 44 (23.7%) knew about both scrub typhus and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, while 156 (83·9%) and 71 (38·2%) recognized limiting skin exposure and use of insect repellents as preventive measures, respectively. The attitudes towards TBDs: being worried about tick bites (p = 0·018) and interested in preventing TBDs (p = 0·001), were significantly higher among women than men. About 75% of the respondents reported taking preventive measures against tick bites, and limiting skin exposure was the most frequently applied method (69·9%). Insect repellents were used by 58 (31·2%) respondents. Age (p = 0·049), being worried about tick bites (p = 0·046), and knowledge of ticks score (p = 0·024) were the significant independent predictors of practicing countermeasures. Ixodid ticks (Acari:Ixodidae) are essential vectors of tick-borne diseases in Japan. In this study, we characterized the population genetic structure and inferred genetic divergence in two widespread and abundant ixodid species, Ixodes ovatus and Haemaphysalis flava. Our hypothesis was that genetic divergence would be high in I. ovatus because of the low mobility of their small rodent hosts of immature I. ovatus would limit their gene flow compared to more mobile avian hosts of immature H. flava. We collected 320 adult I. ovatus from 29 locations and 223 adult H. flava from 17 locations across Niigata Prefecture, Japan, and investigated their genetic structure using DNA sequences from fragments of two mitochondrial gene regions, cox1 and the 16S rRNA gene. For I. ovatus , pairwise F ST and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) analyses of cox1 and 16S sequences indicated significant genetic variation among populations, whereas both markers showed non-significant genetic variation among locations for H. flava. A cox1 gene tree and haplotype network revealed three genetic groups of I. ovatus. One of these groups consisted of haplotypes distributed at lower altitudes (251–471 m.a.s.l.). The cox1 sequences of I. ovatus from Japan clustered separately from I. ovatus sequences reported from China, suggesting the potential for cryptic species in Japan. Our results support our hypothesis and suggest that the host preference of ticks at the immature stage may influence the genetic structure of the ticks. This study represents the first quantitative analysis of the characteristics of the distribution areas and stomach contents of common minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata, sei whale B. borealis, and Bryde's whale B. edeni in relation to oceanographic and prey environments in mid summer in the western North Pacific. Common minke whales were distributed within subarctic regions and the northernmost region of the transitional domain, coinciding with the main habitat of their preferred prey, Pacific saury Cololabis saira. Sei whales were mainly found in the northernmost part of the transition zone and showed prey preference for Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonica, which was significantly more abundant in the main distribution area of the whale than in its adjacent areas. 'Hot spots' of Bryde's whales were found in several regions of the transition zone between the subarctic boundary and the Kuroshio front. This whale species preferred Japanese anchovy as prey, for which the distribution density was significantly higher in the main distribution area of the whale than in the adjacent areas. These results indicate that the summer distributions of Pacific saury and Japanese anchovy greatly influence the distributions of these whale species, suggesting that the whales' habitat selection is closely related to their prey selection. Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis) are migratory capital breeders that experience intensive summer feeding on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in the Southern Ocean and winter breeding at lower latitudes, but their prey outside of the Antarctic is unknown. Stable isotope analyses were conducted on δ13C and δ15N from the baleen plates of ten pregnant Antarctic minke whales to understand the growth rate of the baleen plate and their diet in lower latitudes. Two to three oscillations along the length of the edge of the baleen plate were observed in δ15N, and the annual growth rate was estimated to be 75.2 ± 20.4 mm, with a small amplitude (0.97 ± 0.21 ‰). Bayesian stable isotope mixing models were used to understand the dominant prey that contributed to the isotopic component of the baleen plate using Antarctic krill from the stomach contents and reported values of Antarctic coastal krill (Euphausia crystallorophias), Antarctic silver fish (Pleuragramma antarcticum), Australian krill spp., and Australian pelagic fish spp.. The models showed that the diet composition of the most recent three records from the base of the baleen plates (model 1) and the highest δ15N values in each baleen plate (model 2) were predominantly Antarctic krill, with a contribution rate of approximately 80%. The rates were approximately 10% for Antarctic coastal krill and less than 2.0% for the two Australian prey groups in both models. Japanese spotted fever, a tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia japonica, was firstly described in southwestern Japan. There was a suspicion of Rickettsia japonica infected ticks reaching the non-endemic Niigata Prefecture after a confirmed case of Japanese spotted fever in July 2014. Therefore, from 2015 to 2017, 38 sites were surveyed and rickettsial pathogens were investigated in ticks from north to south of Niigata Prefecture including Sado island. A total of 3336 ticks were collected and identified revealing ticks of three genera and ten species: Dermacentor taiwanensis, Haemaphysalis flava, Haemaphysalis hystricis, Haemaphysalis longicornis, Haemaphysalis megaspinosa, Ixodes columnae, Ixodes monospinosus, Ixodes nipponensis, Ixodes ovatus, and Ixodes persulcatus. Investigation of rickettsial DNA showed no ticks infected by R. japonica. However, three species of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) were found in ticks, R. asiatica, R. helvetica, and R. monacensis, confirming Niigata Prefecture as a new endemic area to SFGR. These results highlight the need for public awareness of the occurrence of this tick-borne disease, which necessitates the establishment of public health initiatives to mitigate its spread. A community outbreak of human influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus strains was observed in Myanmar in 2017. We investigated the circulation patterns, antigenicity, and drug resistance of 2017 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses from Myanmar and characterized the full genome of influenza virus strains in Myanmar from in-patients and out-patients to assess the pathogenicity of the viruses. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from out-patients and in-patients with acute respiratory tract infections in Yangon and Pyinmana City in Myanmar during January-December 2017. A total of 215 out-patients and 18 in-patients infected with A(H1N1)pdm09 were detected by virus isolation and real-time RT-PCR. Among the positive patients, 90.6% were less than 14 years old. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody titers against A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses in Myanmar were similar to the recommended Japanese influenza vaccine strain for 2017–2018 seasons (A/Singapore/GP1908/2015) and WHO recommended 2017 southern hemisphere vaccine component (A/Michigan/45/2015). Phylogenetic analysis of the hemagglutinin sequence showed that the Myanmar strains belonged to the genetic subclade 6B.1, possessing mutations of S162N and S164T at potential antigenic sites. However, the amino acid mutation at position 222, which may enhance the severity of disease and mortality, was not found. One case with no prior history of oseltamivir treatment possessed H275Y mutated virus in neuraminidase (NA), which confers resistance to oseltamivir and peramivir with elevated IC50 values. The full genome sequence of Myanmar strains showed no difference between samples from in-patients and out-patients, suggesting no additional viral mutations associated with patient severity. Several amino acid changes were observed in PB2, PB1, and M2 of Myanmar strains when compared to the vaccine strain and other Asian strains. However, no mutations associated with pathogenicity were found in the Myanmar strains, suggesting that viral factors cannot explain the underlying reasons of the massive outbreak in Myanmar. This study reported the first detection of an oseltamivir-resistant influenza virus in Myanmar, highlighting the importance of continuous antiviral monitoring and genetic characterization of the influenza virus in Myanmar. We investigated the circulation patterns of human influenza A and B viruses in Myanmar between 2010 and 2015 by analyzing full HA genes. Upper respiratory tract specimens were collected from patients with symptoms of influenza-like illness. A total of 2,860 respiratory samples were screened by influenza rapid diagnostic test, of which 1,577 (55.1%) and 810 (28.3%) were positive for influenza A and B, respectively. Of the 1,010 specimens that were positive for virus isolation, 370 (36.6%) were A(H1N1)pdm09, 327 (32.4%) were A(H3N2), 130 (12.9%) B(Victoria), and 183 (18.1%) were B(Yamagata) viruses. Our data showed that influenza epidemics mainly occurred during the rainy season in Myanmar. Our three study sites, Yangon, Pyinmana, and Pyin Oo Lwin had similar seasonality and circulating type and subtype of influenza in a given year. Moreover, viruses circulating in Myanmar during the study period were closely related genetically to those detected in Thailand, India, and China. Phylogeographic analysis showed that A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses in Myanmar originated from Europe and migrated to other countries via Japan. Similarly, A(H3N2) viruses in Myanmar originated from Europe, and disseminated to the various countries via Australia. In addition, Myanmar plays a key role in reseeding of influenza B viruses to Southeast Asia and East Asia as well as Europe and Africa. Bovine torovirus (BToV) is recognized as an enteric pathogen of calves, but its etiological role in diarrhea and epidemiological characterization in adult cows remain unclear. In 2007-2008, three outbreaks of epidemic diarrhea occurred in adult cows at three dairy farms in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. BToV was the only enteric pathogen detected in these outbreaks, as determined by electron microscopy, reverse transcription-PCR, bacteria and parasite tests of fecal samples, and antibody tests with paired sera. The epidemiological features of the three outbreaks were similar to those of bovine coronavirus infection, except for the absence of bloody diarrhea, with diarrhea spreading among most adult cows, but not in calves, within several days and diarrhea lasting for 3-5 days with anorexia. Decreased milk production and mild respiratory symptoms were also observed in two of the outbreaks. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the BToV nucleocapsid, spike, and hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) genes revealed a close relatedness among the detected BToV strains from each outbreak and those of Japanese BToV strain Aichi/2004. Furthermore, we isolated a BToV strain, designated Niigata (TC), from a fecal sample using a human rectal tumor cell line. Sequence analysis of this isolate and Aichi/2004 indicated that both strains have truncated HE genes with deletions in the 3′ region that occurred through cell culture-adaptation. The short projections that are believed to be formed by the HE protein on virus particles were not observed in these cultured strains by electron microscopy. Taken together, these results suggest that BToV causes epidemic diarrhea in adult cows and should be included in the differential diagnosis of diarrhea in adult cows. The article presents the Report of the Sub-Committee on the Revised Management Procedure (RMP) of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) about its agendas and other issues discussed at the IWC Scientific Committee Annual Meeting in Agadir, Morocco from May 30 to June 11, 2010. An update on the Third Intersessional Workshop on the Review of Maximum Sustainable Yield Rate (MSYR) for Baleen Whales in Seattle, Washington in April 2010 is provided. The sub-committee decided that the range for MSYR values in the RMP should be finalised first before completing discussions on amendments to the Catch Limit Algorithm (CLA). Other topics include the sub-committee's work plan for the 2011 Annual Meeting and its recommended changes to abundance estimates for Central North Atlantic minke whales.
