1. Multi Sentence Description of Complex Manipulation Action Videos

Abstract

Automatic video description requires the generation of natural language statements about the actions, events, and objects in the video. An important human trait, when we describe a video, is that we are able to do this with variable levels of detail. Different from this, existing approaches for automatic video descriptions are mostly focused on single sentence generation at a fixed level of detail. Instead, here we address video description of manipulation actions where different levels of detail are required for being able to convey information about the hierarchical structure of these actions relevant also for modern approaches of robot learning. We propose one hybrid statistical and one end-to-end framework to address this problem. The hybrid method needs much less data for training, because it models statistically uncertainties within the video clips, while in the end-to-end method, which is more data-heavy, we are directly connecting the visual encoder to the language decoder without any intermediate (statistical) processing step. Both frameworks use LSTM stacks to allow for different levels of description granularity and videos can be described by simple single-sentences or complex multiple-sentence descriptions. In addition, quantitative results demonstrate that these methods produce more realistic descriptions than other competing approaches.

2. A Hierarchical Graph-based Approach for Recognition and Description Generation of Bimanual Actions in Videos

Abstract

Nuanced understanding and the generation of detailed descriptive content for (bimanual) manipulation actions in videos is important for disciplines such as robotics, human-computer interaction, and video content analysis. This study describes a novel method, integrating graph based modeling with layered hierarchical attention mechanisms, resulting in higher precision and better comprehensiveness of video descriptions. To achieve this, we encode, first, the spatio-temporal inter dependencies between objects and actions with scene graphs and we combine this, in a second step, with a novel 3-level architecture creating a hierarchical attention mechanism using Graph Attention Networks (GATs). The 3-level GAT architecture allows recognizing local, but also global contextual elements. This way several descriptions with different semantic complexity can be generated in parallel for the same video clip, enhancing the discriminative accuracy of action recognition and action description. The performance of our approach is empirically tested using several 2D and 3D datasets. By comparing our method to the state of the art we consistently obtain better performance concerning accuracy, precision, and contextual relevance when evaluating action recognition as well as description generation. In a large set of ablation experiments we also assess the role of the different components of our model. With our multi-level approach the system obtains different semantic description depths, often observed in descriptions made by different people, too. Furthermore, better insight into bimanual hand-object interactions as achieved by our model may portend advancements in the field of robotics, enabling the emulation of intricate human actions with heightened precision.

3. Simulated Mental Imagery for Robotic Task Planning

Abstract

Traditional AI-planning methods for task planning in robotics require a symbolically encoded domain description. While powerful in well-defined scenarios, as well as human-interpretable, setting this up requires substantial effort. Different from this, most everyday planning tasks are solved by humans intuitively, using mental imagery of the different planning steps. Here we suggest that the same approach can be used for robots, too, in cases which require only limited execution accuracy. In the current study, we propose a novel sub-symbolic method called Simulated Mental Imagery for Planning (SiMIP), which consists of perception, simulated action, success-checking and re-planning performed on 'imagined' images. We show that it is possible to implement mental imagery-based planning in an algorithmically sound way by combining regular convolutional neural networks and generative adversarial networks. With this method, the robot acquires the capability to use the initially existing scene to generate action plans without symbolic domain descriptions, while at the same time plans remain human-interpretable, different from deep reinforcement learning, which is an alternative sub-symbolic approach. We create a dataset from real scenes for a packing problem of having to correctly place different objects into different target slots. This way efficiency and success rate of this algorithm could be quantified.

4. Combining Optimal Path Search With Task-Dependent Learning in a Neural Network

Abstract

Finding optimal paths in connected graphs requires determining the smallest total cost for traveling along the graph's edges. This problem can be solved by several classical algorithms where, usually, costs are predefined for all edges. Conventional planning methods can, thus, normally not be used when wanting to change costs in an adaptive way following the requirements of some task. Here we show that one can define a neural network representation of path finding problems by transforming cost values into synaptic weights, which allows for online weight adaptation using network learning mechanisms. When starting with an initial activity value of one, activity propagation in this network will lead to solutions, which are identical to those found by the Bellman-Ford algorithm. The neural network has the same algorithmic complexity as Bellman-Ford and, in addition, we can show that network learning mechanisms (such as Hebbian learning) can adapt the weights in the network augmenting the resulting paths according to some task at hand. We demonstrate this by learning to navigate in an environment with obstacles as well as by learning to follow certain sequences of path nodes. Hence, the here-presented novel algorithm may open up a different regime of applications where path-augmentation (by learning) is directly coupled with path finding in a natural way.

Abstract

The question how neural systems (of humans) can perform reasoning is still far from being solved. We posit that the process of forming Concepts is a fundamental step required for this. We argue that, first, Concepts are formed as closed representations, which are then consolidated by relating them to each other. Here we present a model system (agent) with a small neural network that uses realistic learning rules and receives only feedback from the environment in which the agent performs virtual actions. First, the actions of the agent are reflexive. In the process of learning, statistical regularities in the input lead to the formation of neuronal pools representing relations between the entities observed by the agent from its artificial world. This information then influences the behavior of the agent via feedback connections replacing the initial reflex by an action driven by these relational representations. We hypothesize that the neuronal pools representing relational information can be considered as primordial Concepts, which may in a similar way be present in some pre-linguistic animals, too. This system provides formal grounds for further discussions on what could be understood as a Concept and shows that associative learning is enough to develop concept-like structures.

Abstract

Predicting other people's action is key to successful social interactions, enabling us to adjust our own behavior to the consequence of the others' future actions. Studies on action recognition have focused on the importance of individual visual features of objects involved in an action and its context. Humans, however, recognize actions on unknown objects or even when objects are imagined (pantomime). Other cues must thus compensate the lack of recognizable visual object features. Here, we focus on the role of inter-object relations that change during an action. We designed a virtual reality setup and tested recognition speed for 10 different manipulation actions on 50 subjects. All objects were abstracted by emulated cubes so the actions could not be inferred using object information. Instead, subjects had to rely only on the information that comes from the changes in the spatial relations that occur between those cubes. In spite of these constraints, our results show the subjects were able to predict actions in, on average, less than 64% of the action's duration. We employed a computational model -an enriched Semantic Event Chain (eSEC)- incorporating the information of spatial relations, specifically (a) objects' touching/untouching, (b) static spatial relations between objects and (c) dynamic spatial relations between objects. Trained on the same actions as those observed by subjects, the model successfully predicted actions even better than humans. Information theoretical analysis shows that eSECs optimally use individual cues, whereas humans presumably mostly rely on a mixed-cue strategy, which takes longer until recognition. Providing a better cognitive basis of action recognition may, on one hand improve our understanding of related human pathologies and, on the other hand, also help to build robots for conflict-free human-robot cooperation. 9. Semantic Image Search for Robotic Applications

Abstract

Generalization in robotics is one of the most important problems. New generalization approaches use internet databases in order to solve new tasks. Modern search engines can return a large amount of information according to a query within milliseconds. However, not all of the returned information is task relevant, partly due to the problem of polysemes. Here we specifically address the problem of object generalization by using image search. We suggest a bi-modal solution, combining visual and textual information, based on the observation that humans use additional linguistic cues to demarcate intended word meaning. We evaluate the quality of our approach by comparing it to human labelled data and find that, on average, our approach leads to improved results in comparison to Google searches, and that it can treat the problem of polysemes.

10. One-shot path planning for multi-agent systems using fully convolutional neural network

Abstract

Path planning plays a crucial role in robot action execution, since a path or a motion trajectory for a particular action has to be defined first before the action can be executed. Most of the current approaches are iterative methods where the trajectory is generated iteratively by predicting the next state based on the current state. Moreover, in case of multi-agent systems, paths are planned for each agent separately. In contrast to that, we propose a novel method by utilising fully convolutional neural network, which allows generation of complete paths, even for more than one agent, in one-shot, i.e., with a single prediction step. We demonstrate that our method is able to successfully generate optimal or close to optimal paths in more than 98\% of the cases for single path predictions. Moreover, we show that although the network has never been trained on multi-path planning it is also able to generate optimal or close to optimal paths in 85.7\% and 65.4\% of the cases when generating two and three paths, respectively.

Abstract

Trajectory- or path-planning is a fundamental issue in a wide variety of applications. Here we show that it is possible to solve path planning for multiple start- and end-points highly efficiently with a network that consists only of max pooling layers, for which no network training is needed. Different from competing approaches, very large mazes containing more than half a billion nodes with dense obstacle configuration and several thousand path end-points can this way be solved in very short time on parallel hardware.

Abstract

Efficient action prediction is of central importance for the fluent workflow between humans and equally so for human-robot interaction. To achieve prediction, actions can be encoded by a series of events, where every event corresponds to a change in a (static or dynamic) relation between some of the objects in a scene. Manipulation actions and others can be uniquely encoded this way and only, on average, less than 60% of the time series has to pass until an action can be predicted. Using a virtual reality setup and testing ten different manipulation actions, here we show that in most cases humans predict actions at the same event as the algorithm. In addition, we perform an in-depth analysis about the temporal gain resulting from such predictions when chaining actions and show in some robotic experiments that the percentage gain for humans and robots is approximately equal. Thus, if robots use this algorithm then their prediction-moments will be compatible to those of their human interaction partners, which should much benefit natural human-robot collaboration.

Artykuł zawiera krótki przegląd piśmiennictwa na temat kryminalistycznych badań podpisów, z uwzględnieniem prac litewskich ekspertów w tej dziedzinie. Znaczenie podpisu w życiu społecznym człowieka w XXI wieku utrzymuje się na bardzo wysokim poziomie. W procesie socjalizacji młody człowiek musi przyjąć odpowiedzialność za określone decyzje, którym często towarzyszy podpisywanie dokumentów. Jednym z mniej rozpoznanych zagadnień w badaniach pisma jest proces kształtowania się podpisu i czynniki, które na ten proces wpływają. Autorzy artykułu postanowili zbadać tę kwestię i w pierwszym etapie, po przeprowadzeniu eksperymentu, wstępnie ocenili wpływ członków rodziny i ich podpisów na kształtowanie się podpisu młodego człowieka. Podczas eksperymentu zwrócono uwagę na strukturę (transkrypcja, obraz ogólny) i wspólne cechy sygnatur. Za podobne uznano te podpisy, których struktura (literowa, nieliterowa, mieszana) i większość ogólnych cech (rozmiar, bieg linii, pochylenie itp.) są zbieżne. Wyniki eksperymentu wykazały, że zwykle wybiera się podobny początek podpisu, długość podpisu, strukturę (elementy alfabetyczne lub niealfabetyczne, bieg linii), kolejność liter imienia i nazwiska. Rezultaty przeprowadzonych przez autorów badań mają charakter wstępny, choć już teraz można powiedzieć, że podpisy członków rodziny w wielu przypadkach wpływają na proces formowania się podpisu młodego człowieka. Uzyskane wyniki zachęcają do znacznie szerszego badania, w tym na poziomie międzynarodowym.

Abstract

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama, koks mojamosios kojos padėties ir šuolio į tolį rezultatų ryšys. Šuolio į tolį rezultatą lemia įsibėgėjimo greitis, atsispyrimo galia, judesių tobulumas skriejant oru ir nušokimas. Atlikta daug šuolio technikos tobulinimo mokslinių tyrimų, tačiau labai mažai dėmesio skiriama mojamosios kojos padėčiai atsispiriant tirti. Tokio tyrimo metu naudojant dešimties segmentų modelį, rezultatai iš dalies sutampa su eksperimentiniais, kartu jiems ir prieštarauja. Nagrinėti judesį šiuo modeliu yra sudėtinga. Dėl šios priežasties, taip pat ir dėl tikslo ribotumo analizuojama tik mojamosios kojos įtaka ⎯ buvo sudarytas trijų masių modelis. Juo įvertinamas kojos judrumas per pėdos sąnarį. Tuo tikslu sudaromas strypinis trijų masių modelis, kuriuo įvertinamas pėdos sąnario judrumas, sudaroma kinetinio ir varomojo sukimo momentų lygtys. Pateiktasis modelis, keičiant įėjimo ir valdomuosius dydžius, suteikia galimybę tyrinėti atsispyrimo procesą nepriklausomai nuo to, ar šuoliai tuo metu gali būti atliekami, ar ne. Yra nustatoma pagrindinių šuolio elementų (smūgio atsispyrimo metu, pėdos tiesimo per sąnarį ir mojamosios kojos) padėties ryšys. Mojamosios kojos dinaminiai rodikliai išreiškiami dinamogramomis. Tokių priklausomybių negalima išvesti iš fi lmuoto vaizdo. Nustačius kūno korpuso svyravimų dažnį, skaičiuojamos atskirų masės centrų koordinatės, jų pirmosios išvestinės, randamos bendrojo masės centro koordinatės, nustatomas teorinis šuolio tolio priklausomumas nuo kampinių pagreičių, kuriuos valdo sportininkas. Taip sudaroma kinetinio momento lygtis, kurios pirmoji laiko išvestinė rodo ieškomą varomąjį sukimo momentą. Šiuo būdu gali būti nustatomas ir rodiklių įvairavimas, o norint kuo toliau nušokti ir įvertinti šuolio atlikimo nuoseklumą būtina tiksliai nustatyti veikimo kryptį. Pirmiausia nustatomi šuolio tolį lemiantys sukimo impulsai. Tada ⎯ realiai pasiekta momentinė sąnario jėga. Iš modeliavimo rezultatų galima padaryti išvadą: būtina šiuos įverčius objektyvizuoti. Iki šiol (neatlikus siūlomo modeliavimo) nebuvo galima nustatyti, kaip šuolio į tolį rezultatus veikia nedideli pėdos sąnario kampo pokyčiai. Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of the research is to clarify benefits and risks in regards with data protection, cost; business can have by the use of this new technologies for the implementation and management of organization’s information systems.Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative case study of the results obtained via interviews. Three research questions were raised: Q1: How can company benefit from using Cloud Computing compared to other solutions?; Q2: What are possible issues that occur with Cloud Computing?; Q3: How would Cloud Computing change an organizations’ IT infrastructure?Findings – The calculations provided in the interview section prove the financial advantages, even though the precise degree of flexibility and performance has not been assessed. Cloud Computing offers great scalability. Another benefit that Cloud Computing offers, in addition to better performance and flexibility, is reliable and simple backup data storage, physically distributed and so almost invulnerable to damage. Although the advantages of Cloud Computing more than compensate for the difficulties associated with it, the latter must be carefully considered. Since the cloud architecture is relatively new, so far the best guarantee against all risks it entails, from a single company's perspective, is a well-formulated service-level agreement, where the terms of service and the shared responsibility and security roles between the client and the provider are defined.Research limitations/implications – study was carried out on the bases of two companies, which gives deeper view, but for more widely applicable results, a wider analysis is necessary.Practical implications:Originality/Value – novelty of the research depends on the fact that existing approaches on this problem mainly focus on technical side of computing.Research type: case study

Abstract

Purpose—Social technologies continue to grow in popularity in society. Even though the term “social technology” is most commonly used to refer to new social media such as Twitter and Facebook, a redefinition of this concept based on the original definition is needed. Nowadays the concept of “social technology” has several aspects, which destabilize the dominant image of technology. It emphasizes the social sciences and the humanities as shapers of society, reconsiders the strength of “soft technologies.” The aim of this paper is to provide rich insight into the concept of social technologies’ and to develop the meaning of social technologies in information and knowledge society by analysing new needs and application forms of social technologies.Findings—the research contributed to the understanding of the concept of social technologies. Based on the analysis and synthesis of the scientific literature, a theoretical framework for defining social technologies was developed.Research limitations/implications—the research is limited in a few aspects. For a deeper understanding of social technologies and for developing technological perspectives in social sciences a broader theoretical, as well as empirical, research is necessary. In order to generalise the research findings, further research should include different dimensions from the perspective of other sciences.

Abstract

This paper investigates the lexical representation of sincerity in Lithuanian epistolarity throughout the twentieth century. Drawing on data from the corpus of Lithuanian letters and employing the techniques of corpus, statistical and philological analysis, this paper explores the use, frequency and context of occurrence of the four sets of lexical stems: atvir- (‘open’, ‘frank’), nuošird- (‘sincere’, ‘honest’), šird- (‘heart’), and tikr- (‘authentic’, ‘genuine’, ‘real’). As each of these lexical stems foreground different semantic shades of sincerity, they are treated in this paper as lexical variables that inscribe different degrees of an author’s sincere attitude (stance) toward the addressee and the writing act itself. The findings suggest that in Lithuanian epistolarity the use of sincerity lexemes is constrained by the grammatical shape of the lexeme and genre-related factors, namely, formulaic vs. non-formulaic context. Frequent lexical inscription of sincerity lexemes in the speech acts of thanking, wishing and greeting suggests that sincerity (as a stance) is conventionally linked to these specific social acts. When these social acts are evoked in epistolary practice, they thus evoke a particular (sincere) stance meaning.

Purpose – to reveal the role of stakeholders (especially the future users of the IS being developed) in e-health development process and to enrich the existing body of knowledge in the field with new findings from an in-depth empirical case study research by using the framework of the theoretical stakeholder participation ladder, which was developed by Arnstein (1969) and later extended by Friedman and Miles (2006).Design/methodology/approach – an overview of the exsisting scientific literature in the field and generalization of the findings of the langitudial qualitative empirical case study research based on a participant observation methodology.Findings – the amount of research papers on the role of stakeholder engagement in the process of ICT development and implementation is increasing; however, the number of articles on social aspects of ICT implementation remains yet rather low. Even a smaller number of articles are focused on the role of stakeholder engagement in e-health development. An in-depth overview of the exsisting body of scientific research findings and the results of the empirical research undertaken by the authors of this aricle allow to state that the body of scientific empirically grounded evidence is increasing that the stakeholder engagement (especially the future users of the IS being developed) in the process of e-health development is a critical factor to reach high quality, innovation and managerial change sustainability in the process. By using the framework of theoretical stakeholder participation ladder, which was initially developed by Arnstein (1969) and later extended by Friedman and Miles (2006) and which represents the degrees of stakeholders engagement quality and on the basis of qualitative empirical research results, recommendations are provided to practitioners on the type of stakeholders how and when should be included in the process to reach the most efficient results in the process of e-health development.Research limitations/implications – empirical part of the research encompasses the analysis of e-health development experience of two countries (England and Wales). Further research can assess the relevance of conclusions towards other countries as well as Lithuania.Practical implications – analytical part of the research is based on an in-depth analysis of qualitative empirical research results. As the outcome of the executed research, recommendations are provided for practitioners working in the field of e-health development.Originality/Value – the article presents an overview of the most recent scientific literature on the topic, which then theoretical overview links with new insights from the qualitative empirical research.Research type: research paper.

Purpose – to explore the essence of concepts of collective intelligence and collective intelligence technologies and to analyze their adaption possibilities in programming public sector’s decisions.Design/methodology/approach – review of previous researches and systemic analysis of their findings in the field of intelligence generated by many and collective intelligence technologies is executed. Also, review of collective intelligence technologies and empirical research (qualitative analysis of expert statements) are employed. Finally, synthesis of study results into system of possibilities for adaption of existing collective intelligence technologies in programming public sector’s decisions is done.Findings – collective intelligence concept is explored in depth. Collective intelligence technologies are overviewed and a course line for adaption in programming public sector’s decisions is presented. Differences between ministries and municipalities in comprehending decisions’ structure are presented. Decision characteristics for programming are given in relation to case appropriate social technologies.Research limitations/implications – references used for the analysis on intelligence generated by many and collective intelligences technologies are not an exhaustive list within the field. Accomplished empirical research leans only upon analyses of Lithuanian experts. No technical insights into the technologies of collective intelligence are made.Practical implications – findings of the paper provide suggestions for improving strategy of decision making process in public sector, due to which efficient model for participation of citizens (and residents) is possible.Originality/value – the systemic analysis of concepts of collective intelligence and collective intelligence technologies and their adaption possibilities in public sector’s decisions is presented. Abstract

Pagrindinis šio magistrinio darbo tikslas buvo sukurti metodiką, padedančia lektoriams kurti mokomuosius vaizdo įrašus , kurių pagalba besimokantieji gali kelti kvalifikaciją iš namų, išvengiant tiesioginio kontakto su kitais žmonėmis. Metodikos kūrimui buvo išanalizuota mokymosi situacija iki prasidedant Covid-19 pandemijai, išanalizuoti metodiniai reikalavimai mokomiesiems vaizdo įrašams. Kuriant metodiką buvo atlikta analizė kurioje siekta išsiaiškinti kokie reikalavimai keliami mokomiesiems vaizdo įrašams jų kūrimui ir pateikimui. Išanalizavus reikalavimus ir rekomendacijas buvo apklausta užsakovė, kuri susipažinusi su išvadomis pateikė savo reikalavimus metodikai. Realizuojant metodiką, parengti metodinės medžiagos kūrimo metodai mokomųjų vaizdo įrašų filmavimui, montavimui ir medžiagos įkėlimui į platformą. Metodika išbandyta su naryste, kurios visi mokomieji vaizdo įrašai sukurti pagal parašytą metodiką narėms. Siekiant išsiaiškinti metodikos efektyvumą, buvo atliktas tyrimas. Atsižvelgiant į teigiamus apklausos rezultatus, rekomenduojama metodiką taikyti nuotolinio kvalifikacijos kėlimo kursų kūrimui., The main goal of this master’s thesis was to develop a methodology to help lecturers create instructional videos that allow students to improve their qualifications from home while avoiding direct contact with other people. For the development of the methodology, the learning situation before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic was analyzed, and the methodological requirements for educational videos were analyzed. During the development of the methodology, an analysis was performed in order to find out the requirements for educational videos their creation and presentation. When requirements and recommendations was clear, client was accused. After getting acquainted with the conclusions she submitted her requirements for the methodology. During the implementation of the methodology, methods for the development of methodological material - filming, editing and uploading of educational videos to the platform were developed. The methodology was tested with a membership in which all instructional videos were created according to a written methodology for members. In order to find out the effectiveness of the methodology, a study was conducted. After getting positive results of the survey, it is recommended to apply the methodology to develop professional remote training courses.

Abstract

Purpose—Social technologies continue to grow in popularity in society. Even though the term “social technology” is most commonly used to refer to new social media such as Twitter and Facebook, a redefinition of this concept based on the original definition is needed. Nowadays the concept of “social technology” has several aspects, which destabilize the dominant image of technology. It emphasizes the social sciences and the humanities as shapers of society, reconsiders the strength of “soft technologies.” The aim of this paper is to provide rich insight into the concept of social technologies’ and to develop the meaning of social technologies in information and knowledge society by analysing new needs and application forms of social technologies. Findings—the research contributed to the understanding of the concept of social technologies. Based on the analysis and synthesis of the scientific literature, a theoretical framework for defining social technologies was developed. Research limitations/implications—the research is limited in a few aspects. For a deeper understanding of social technologies and for developing technological perspectives in social sciences a broader theoretical, as well as empirical, research is necessary. In order to generalise the research findings, further research should include different dimensions from the perspective of other sciences. Article Type: conceptual paper.
