This review highlights potential application areas for carbon-based molecular nanoparticles, such as carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene quantum dots, and carbon quantum dots. The success of nano-manufacturing hinges on robust collaboration between academia and industry to advance applicable manufacturing techniques. Choosing the right approach is crucial, one that integrates the carbon base of nanomaterials with the required properties and impurities, as well as the scalability of the process. Molecular, in this context, refers to the nanoscale carbon structures that form the basis of these materials, including their arrangement, bonding, and properties at the molecular level. The article also explores the characterization of different types of molecular nanomaterials. Nanomaterials are increasingly used in almost every contemporary industry, including construction, textiles, manufacturing, and computing. This article reviews the most prominent sectors globally that employ nanomaterials. Biomasses containing lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose have become some of the most extensively studied. Initially, rice waste was utilized for bulk materials, but lately, the production of multifunctional materials has surged in interest. Carbon nanostructures derived from rice waste offer a broad spectrum of applications and enhanced biocompatibility. Recent advancements, challenges, and trends in the development of multifunctional carbon-based nanomaterials from renewable rice waste resources are considered.

Recent developments of green technology promote the rising attraction toward developing high-performance and environmentally friendly pultruded products from naturally derived resources. Some factors that attract attention to developing pultruded biocomposites are their lightweight properties, recyclability, and economical and environmentally superior alternatives to synthetic fibers in commercial applications. Researchers have studied that the environmental crisis caused by conventional synthetic materials can be reduced significantly by using sustainable materials instead. This paper aims to review the potential of plant fibers to be used in pultruded composite manufacturing to reduce and replace the use of synthetic materials in pultruded structures. It was found that kenaf and jute fibers have been extensively studied in pultruded plant fiber reinforced composites and pultruded glass/plant fiber reinforced hybrid composites for their mechanical and physical properties under various test parameters. Overall, pultruded PFCs have recorded good mechanical properties but have limitations in water absorption properties for outdoor applications. An overview of the optimum process parameters, limitations, and potential applications of pultruded PFCs are also outlined. Finally, this review summarizes the future scopes and expectations, providing researchers and industrialists with a vision for deeper investigation in developing pultruded PFCs.

This study investigated the mechanical performance of hybrid tubes made via roll-wrapping and enhanced with an aluminum mesh and epoxy matrix (AL-DMEM). The specimens included Basalt + Jute (BJAJB), Basalt + Bamboo (BBmABmB), Basalt + Banana (BBaABaB), Basalt + Hemp (BHAHB), and Basalt (BAB). The BBmABmB specimen showed the best mechanical properties with the highest peak crushing force, specific energy absorption, mean crushing force, and total energy absorption. The AL-DMEM integration improved load-bearing capacity and energy absorption, reducing matrix cracking and fiber breakage. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis highlighted BBmABmB's robust reinforcement. Its superior structural integrity and aluminum content make it suitable for applications requiring high structural integrity, such as micromobility vehicles, highlighting the potential of AL-DMEM-reinforced composites in advanced engineering applications.

As modern ASICs integrate several hundred interconnect ports in a large package, ASIC Serdes design faces challenging performance, power, and area targets. Thanks to architectural advancements and technology scaling, a DSP-based transceiver has demonstrated better than 40-dB loss compensation with competitive power and area that enabled very large-scale Serdes integration in a single package. This article reviews two recent publications for long-reach ASIC Serdes designed in 5- and 7-nm FinFET. With detailed discussions on design challenges from major building blocks, TX/RX/PLL, a novel TX data path bandwidth extension technique by a feedback equalizer is proposed with silicon data.

Abstract After myocardial infarction in the adult heart the remaining, non-infarcted tissue adapts to compensate the loss of functional tissue. This adaptation requires changes in gene expression networks, which are mostly controlled by transcription regulating proteins. Long non-coding transcripts (lncRNAs) are taking part in fine-tuning such gene programs. We describe and characterize the cardiomyocyte specific lncRNA Sweetheart RNA (Swhtr), an approximately 10 kb long transcript divergently expressed from the cardiac core transcription factor coding gene Nkx2-5. We show that Swhtr is dispensable for normal heart development and function but becomes essential for the tissue adaptation process after myocardial infarction in murine males. Re-expressing Swhtr from an exogenous locus rescues the Swhtr null phenotype. Genes that depend on Swhtr after cardiac stress are significantly occupied and therefore most likely regulated by NKX2-5. The Swhtr transcript interacts with NKX2-5 and disperses upon hypoxic stress in cardiomyocytes, indicating an auxiliary role of Swhtr for NKX2-5 function in tissue adaptation after myocardial injury.

Background Most of the studies about the efficacy of smoking-cessation medication and its side effects were conducted in developed countries on participants who differ from Arab population in sociocultural and genetic factors. Patients and methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted on a convenient sample of 100 smokers at the smoking-cessation clinic. The participants were allocated into four groups: nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion (BPP), combination of NRT+BPP, and placebo. Counseling was offered to all participants. Outcomes: self-reported smoking status with biochemical verification (success to stop smoking, lapse, relapse, or failure to stop smoking) at 3 and 6 months from starting treatment. Results The total success rate in four studied groups was 14% at 3 months and 8% at 6 months. There was no evidence of any statistically significant difference between any of the interventional groups (NRT, BPP, or their combination) and placebo group at 3 and 6 months as regards success rate (8, 12, 8, and 28%, respectively, at 3 months and 8, 12, 0, and 12%, respectively, at 6 months). There were no serious adverse events in the studied groups. Headache was more significantly reported by placebo group compared with all other groups (P=0.01), and urgency was more significantly reported by placebo group compared with NRT group (P=0.001). Conclusion The study found no evidence of the superior effect of NRT, BPP, or their combination over placebo in helping smokers quit smoking at 3 and 6 months. However, more withdrawal symptoms were reported by the placebo group.

Abstract Background Heterotopic pregnancy describes the occurrence of two pregnancies in different implantation sites simultaneously, which is rare, yet it is a challenge to diagnose such a problem due to complex clinical and laboratory findings. In the current study, we present a case of first trimester heterotopic pregnancy diagnosed by ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and was managed successfully. Case presentation A 22-year-old primigravida lady with spontaneous pregnancy was presented by increasing lower abdominal pain for 5 days with brownish vaginal discharge, nausea, and vomiting episodes. Trans-abdominal and endovaginal ultrasound was performed and revealed a viable intrauterine pregnancy of 8 weeks and 1 day, associated with a heterogeneous complex right adnexal mass. MR imaging revealed a right adnexal mass intimately anterior to the normal right ovary. Laparascopy was done; it revealed a distended right fallopian tube with pregnancy while the right ovary was not seen (impeded in the pouch of Douglas), and right salpingectomy was done. The specimen was sent for histopathology. The patient tolerated the procedure well and was then taken to the recovery room in stable condition. The histopathological report confirmed the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. Conclusion However, heterotopic is a rare condition, any pregnant woman presenting with alarming abdominal pain and adnexal abnormality; heterotopic pregnancy should be among the differential diagnosis possibilities. The patient should be thoroughly investigated using ultrasound and MRI if needed, to exclude this rare diagnosis and allow on-time proper management.

The evolutionary conserved Taurine Upregulated Gene 1 (TUG1) is a ubiquitously expressed gene that is one of the highest expressed genes in human and rodent endothelial cells (ECs). We here show that TUG1 expression decreases significantly in aging mouse carotid artery ECs and human ECs in vitro, indicating a potential role in the aging endothelial vasculature system. We therefore investigated if, and how, TUG1 might function in aging ECs, but despite extensive phenotyping found no alterations in basal EC proliferation, apoptosis, barrier function, migration, mitochondrial function, or monocyte adhesion upon TUG1 silencing in vitro. TUG1 knockdown did slightly and significantly decrease cumulative sprout length upon vascular endothelial growth factor A stimulation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), though TUG1-silenced HUVECs displayed no transcriptome-wide mRNA expression changes explaining this effect. Further, ectopic expression of the highly conserved and recently discovered 153 amino acid protein translated from certain TUG1 transcript isoforms did not alter angiogenic sprouting in vitro. Our data show that, despite a high expression and strong evolutionary conservation of both the TUG1 locus and the protein sequence it encodes, TUG1 does not seem to play a major role in basic endothelial cell function.

When managing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, radiological imaging complements clinical evaluation and laboratory parameters. We aimed to assess the sensitivity of chest radiography findings in detecting COVID-19, describe those findings, and assess the association of positive chest radiography findings with clinical and laboratory findings. A multicentre, cross-sectional study was conducted involving all primary health care corporation-registered patients (2485 patients) enrolled over a 1-month period during the peak of the 2020 pandemic wave in Qatar. These patients had reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-19 and underwent chest radiography within 72 hours of the swab test. A positive result on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19. The sensitivity of chest radiography was calculated. The airspace opacities were mostly distributed in the peripheral and lower lung zones, and most of the patients had bilateral involvement. Pleural effusion was detected in some cases. The risk of having positive chest X-ray findings increased with age, Southeast Asian nationality, fever, or a history of fever and diarrhoea. Patients with cardiac disease, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease were at a higher risk of having positive chest X-ray findings. There was a statistically significant increase in the mean serum albumin, white blood cell count, neutrophil count, and serum C-reactive protein, hepatic enzymes, and total bilirubin with an increase in the radiographic severity score.

While long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) genes have attracted a lot of attention in the last decade, the focus regarding their mechanisms of action has been primarily on the RNA product of these genes. Recent work on several lncRNAs genes demonstrates that not only is the produced RNA species important, but also that transcription of the lncRNA locus alone can have regulatory functions. Like the functions of lncRNA transcripts, the mechanisms that underlie these genome-based functions are varied. Here we highlight some of these examples and provide an outlook on how the functional mechanisms of a lncRNA gene can be determined.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease worldwide and new drugs were licensed for its treatment. Quite a few studies worked on spectrum of respiratory side effects associated with those new therapies. This work aimed to evaluate respiratory side effects associated with sofosbuvir-based regimens used for treatment of chronic HCV. Methods: This study included 418 patients with HCV infection classified into 3 groups according to the treatment regimen: Group 1 (IFN-Sof-Rib): received triple therapy of sofosbuvir, pegylated interferon (Peg IFN)-α and ribavirin for 12 weeks. Group 2 (Sof-Rib): received combined therapy of sofosbuvir, and ribavirin for 24 weeks, and Group 3 (Sof-Dacl-Rib): received triple therapy of sofosbuvir, daclatasvir and ribavirin for 12 weeks. All patients underwent baseline assessment including history taking, clinical examination, routine laboratory investigations, α-feto-protein, polymerase chain reaction for HCV RNA, abdominal ultrasound, and electrocardiogram. Patients then were followed monthly during the course of treatment for any respiratory side effects. Plain chest X-ray, high resolution computed tomography, spirometry, bronchial challenge test, and/or fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage were performed as indicated. Results: Cough was the commonest symptom in all groups (5.9%, 13%, and 7% in groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively). Obstructive ventilatory defect was the prominent pattern in the three groups without statistically significant difference (p = 0.181). Bronchitis was the most common finding in the three groups (2.2%, 5.8% and 3.5% in group 1, 2, and 3 respectively). It was followed by upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in group 2 (4.5%). URTI and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) occurred equally in group 1 (1.5%) and group 3 (1.7%). Conclusion: Sofosbuvir-based regimens used for treatment of chronic HCV infection are considered safe with minor respiratory adverse effects. However, larger multicenter studies are required for further assessment.

Sexual harassment and gang rape in Egypt have garnered attention from both traditional and digital media. This study employed a volunteer HarassMap to analyse sexual harassment crimes (SHCs) across Egypt from a spatial perspective. The specific aims were to apply the Hierarchical Density‐Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm to locate clusters of reported SHCs, and to assess their spatial dependence on land use types. To accomplish this task, ring buffers of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 metres were established around each crime scene to determine which land use was mostly associated with the incidence of these SHCs. Local bivariate relationships were used to explore the associations between SHC and each land‐use category. Results from the HDBSCAN algorithm revealed four crime clusters within the study domain, mainly located in Greater Cairo, Alexandria, and Behaira. Notably, commercial establishments and transit stations showed a significantly positive correlation with SHC. The study shows how land uses shape SHC and showed that it is possible to identify environmental risk factors for harassment. These risk factors can help policymakers, urban planners, and community stakeholders prevent and reduce sexual harassment and gender inequality, and promote just and inclusive societies. Aim of study: A retrospective study of diagnostic evaluation, safety and thoracoscopic findings in 100 cases was done at thoracoscopy unit of Chest Department Mansoura University Hospitals in the last two years. Results: We studied 100 patients in two groups, first group (G1) consisted of 85 male patients (67.1%) with undiagnosed pleural effusion and the second group (G2) consisted of 15 undiagnosed ILD female patients (60%). Final histopathologic diagnosis in the first group revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma in 35.3%, para-pneumonic 44.7%, TB 10.6%, NHL7.1% and mesothelioma 2.4%, while in the second group it was metastatic adenocarcinoma 6.7%, UIP 46.7%, NSIP 13.3%, TB 6.7%, BAC 13.3%, silicosis 6.7% and lastly LIP in 6.7%. We found that time of ICT removal was significantly lower in the first group with p value 0.001 and complication incidences were variants; fistula was significantly lower in the first group while empyema and surgical emphysema were significantly higher in the first group with p value 0.001. Conclusion: VAMT is a good tool for the diagnosis of undiagnosed pleural diseases and is promising in ILDs, safe, and inexpensive with minimally tolerable complications.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate CT guided biopsy (CTGB) vs. standard closed pleural biopsy (CPB) in the histopathological diagnosis of the type of malignancy in patients with malignant pleural effusion. Patients and methods: We studied 31 patients (21 male and 10 female) with malignant pleural effusion diagnosed by aspiration cytology and admitted to the medical ward of a general teaching hospital over a period of 1 year. Patients were randomized into two groups: group 1 (n = 16) underwent CTGB biopsy and group 2 (n = 15) underwent Abram’s CPB. The diagnostic yield of both methods was compared. Results: The mean age of patients was 54 ± 16 years. History of smoking was obtained in 15 (48.4%) patients. Dyspnea was reported in 22 (71%) and chest pain in 15 (48.4%). Malignant pleural effusion was left-sided in 17 (54.8%), and massive in 21 (67.7%) patients. Of note, CT imaging revealed parietal pleura as a tumor site in 20 (64.5%) patients. Pathological diagnosis of the type of malignancy was achieved in 14 (87.5%) of group 1 using CTGB and 6 (40%) of group 2 patients using Abram’s CPB. The diagnostic value of CTGB was significantly higher than CPB (P = 0.009). Conclusion: CT-guided biopsy was found to be a reliable and safe method in the histopathological diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion. Its diagnostic potential was much superior to the standard closed pleural biopsy.
