4. Transition and trend of study on domestic and overseas anorexia and dysphagia

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to survey domestic and overseas studies on anorexia and dysphagia and explore their transition and characteristics in each generation. The authors performed a word frequency analysis and a characteristic words analysis by generation using the text mining method for the titles of total 1,638 original papers published in published in the past 33 years in “Dysphagia”, which is an academic journal for swallowing disorders. For studies on swallowing, its examination methods and swallowing function evaluations were mainly conducted in the1980-1990s, and case reports about swallowing training methods and systematic reviews increased after the 2000s. Moreover, themes for cerebrovascular disorder patients and cancer patients attract researchers’ attention accompanied with global aging. One of the characteristics of the swallowing support system in Japan is that multiple professionals are involved with it.

16. The fine slips of cutaneous muscle extending from the ventrolateral trunk to the brachium in the rat

Abstract

A fine slip separated from the external surface of the cutaneous trunci muscle was often found around the axillary region of the rat. However, there has been scarce report concerning such muscular bundle. The aim of this study was to examine it anatomically. The slip extended from the ventrolateral trunk to the fascia of brachium. It covered the thoracic mammary glands in female and the adipose mass in male. The nerve supply from the caudal pectoral nerve was expected, although the true innervation was not clearly identified. Moreover, it was suggested that the murine commonly possesses this type of muscle. The anatomical knowledge about this muscular slip will probably diminish the inconveniences during the skin experiment using rats.

21. Biomechanical role of peri-implant cancellous bone architecture.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical role of trabecular bone around dental implants in the mandible. Materials and Methods: The model in this study was made using micro-computed tomography data taken from a cadaver in whom endosseous implants had been in place for 15 years prior to death. Morphologic analysis and three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis were performed to calculate the peri-implant loading path of the model in which the trabecular structure was accurately simulated. Results: As seen through multiscale analysis using the homogenization method, the trabecular bone architecture around implants was isotropic for the most part. Also, 3D finite element analysis showed that compressive stresses oblique to the implant axis were transmitted to the lower constrained surface; tensile stresses oblique to the implant axis were transmitted to the upper constrained surface, and they intersected each other with vertical loading. The highest stress in cancellous bone was observed on perpendicular loading, and stress produced in trabeculae decreased approaching horizontal loading. Conclusion: Cancellous bone architecture around the implant was generally isotropic. 3D finite element analysis showed that cancellous bone trabeculae around implants dispersed stress by forming load transfer paths. The results suggest that trabecular bone plays a major role in supporting functional pressure exerted via the implant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The serial movement of mastication and swallowing is produced by delicate cooperation of mouth, pharynx, esophagus and the circumference structures. The aim of this report is to explain about the form of soft palate muscles which is hard to understand but important for dentistry. The posterior margin of soft palate forms an upper wall of isthmus of fauces with the uvula hanging from central part. It relaxes and strains with flexibility and seems to be a sail of a ship, so it is called veli palatini. Soft palate has no lining of bone, but maxillary tuberosity, horizontal plate of palatine bone, pterygoid process of sphenoid bone, temporal bone cone lower part, cartilage of auditory tube are important peripheral structures. Soft palate consists of five muscles. Musculus uvulae elevate the uvula. Palatoglossus and palatopharyngeus originate from lower part than soft palate, and make the wall of fauces. Levator veli palatini and tensor veil palatini originate upper portion than the soft palate, and elevate and strain the soft palate. When they are observed in a mouth, the forms of the schema of these muscles seem to be a spider.

48. CORROSION CASTS OF CONVOLUTED TESTICULAR ARTERIES IN MICE AND RATS

Abstract

The preparation of vascular corrosion casts enables us to observe the minute feautures of blood vessels. For mice and rats, reports on the macroscopical appearance of testicular arteries with the cast technique have been quite limited. Therefore, in the present study, we tried to prepare corrosion casts of such arteries in order to observe the three-dimensional structures in mice and rats. Vascular casts of testicular arteries were produced by intravenous injection of a polymethylmethacrylate solution, followed by treatment of the whole animal bodies with NaOH. Additionally, the gross appearance of human testicular arteries in cadavers was compared with that of the vascular casts. The results showed that the testicular arteries of humans, mice, and rats run from the abdominal aorta to the testes, with various configurations (straight, meandering, spiral, or coiled forms), and each species exhibits a specific pattern. The specific forms of testicular arteries may play several roles in protection of normal spermatogenesis, such as allowing wide mobility of the testes on physical attack, heat emission with the entwined pampiniform plexus, and reduction of the blood flow rate. The great extension of the testicular arteries during the fetal period from the upper abdomen to the scrotum when the testes descend might be another feature of the specific development of their running configuration.

49. Anatomical study of trigeminal-facial nerve communications: Application to facial transplant surgery.

Abstract

Understanding the distribution of nerves in the superficial layer of the face and the communication (nerve anastomosis) between them is essential for preventing paralysis during tumor removal and for planning during nerve grafting. However, communication between the peripheral branches of the trigeminal and facial nerves has not been fully elucidated owing to the delicacy of their structures and the ambiguity of definitions in previous reports. In this study, we used whole-mount nerve staining to differentiate between the two types of interaction between the trigeminal and facial nerves. "Nerve communication" is defined as an exchange of fibers between the two nerves, while "nerve crossing" indicates that only the epineuria are in close contact, with no exchange of fibers. The skin and soft tissues of six human faces were excised, and the nerves were stained using Sihler's method. The peripheral branches of the ophthalmic nerve showed no communication with the facial nerve. In half of the cases (3/6), the infraorbital nerve, representing the peripheral branch of the maxillary nerve, communicated with the facial nerve. Peripheral branches of the mandibular nerve communicated with the facial nerve via the auriculotemporal (6/6), buccal (6/6), and mental (3/6) nerves. Our findings demonstrate moderate communication between the peripheral branches of the trigeminal and facial nerves in the maxillary nerve region but more concentrated communication in the mandibular nerve region., (© 2024 American Association of Clinical Anatomists and British Association of Clinical Anatomists.)
