Theories of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates are dependent on an understanding of their normal state which exhibits various competing orders. Transport and thermodynamic measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ show signatures of a quantum critical point, including a peak in the electronic specific heat $C$ versus doping $p$, near the doping $p^{\star}$ where the pseudogap collapses. The fundamental nature of the fluctuations associated with this peak is unclear. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to show that close to $T_c$ and near $p^{\star}$, there are very-low-energy collective spin excitations with characteristic energies $\hbar \Gamma \approx$~5 meV. Cooling and applying a 8.8~T magnetic field creates a mixed state with a stronger magnetic response below 10~meV. We conclude that the low-energy spin-fluctuations are due to the collapse of the pseudogap combined with an underlying tendency to magnetic order. We show that the large specific heat near $p^{\star}$ can be understood in terms of collective spin fluctuations. Hall effect and quantum oscillation measurements on high temperature cuprate superconductors show that underdoped compositions have a small Fermi surface pocket whereas when heavily overdoped, the pocket increases dramatically in size. The origin of this change in electronic structure has been unclear, but may be related to the high temperature superconductivity. Here we show that the clean overdoped single-layer cuprate Tl2Ba2CuO6+x (Tl2201) displays CDW order with a remarkably long correlation length $\xi \approx 200$ \r{A} which disappears above a hole concentration p_CDW ~ 0.265. We show that the evolution of the electronic properties of Tl2201 as the doping is lowered may be explained by a Fermi surface reconstruction which accompanies the emergence of the CDW below p_CDW. Our results demonstrate importance of CDW correlations in understanding the electronic properties of overdoped cuprates.

Possible bound nuclei beyond the two-neutron drip line in the $50\leqslant Z \leqslant 70$ region are investigated by using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with density functional PC-PK1. Bound nuclei beyond the drip lines of $_{56}$Ba, $_{58}$Ce, $_{62}$Sm, $_{64}$Gd and $_{66}$Dy are predicted, forming peninsulas of stability in nuclear landscape. Near these peninsulas, several multi-neutron emitters are predicted. The underlying mechanism of the peninsulas of stability is investigated by studying the total energy, Fermi surface, quadrupole deformation and the single-neutron spectrum in the canonical basis. It is found that the deformation effect is crucial for forming the peninsulas of stability, and pairing correlations are also essential in specific cases. The dependence on the deformation evolution is also discussed. We present results obtained from X-ray observations of the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 4U 0142+61 taken between 2000-2007 using XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift. In observations taken before 2006, the pulse profile is observed to become more sinusoidal and the pulsed fraction increased with time. These results confirm those derived using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and expand the observed evolution to energies below 2 keV. The XMM-Newton total flux in the 0.5-10 keV band is observed to be nearly constant in observations taken before 2006, while an increase of ~10% is seen afterwards and coincides with the burst activity detected from the source in 2006-2007. After these bursts, the evolution towards more sinusoidal pulse profiles ceased while the pulsed fraction showed a further increase. No evidence for large-scale, long-term changes in the emission as a result of the bursts is seen. The data also suggest a correlation between the flux and hardness of the spectrum, with brighter observations on average having a harder spectrum. As pointed out by other authors, we find that the standard blackbody plus power-law model does not provide the best spectral fit to the emission from 4U 0142+61. We also report on observations taken with the Gemini telescope after two bursts. These observations show source magnitudes consistent with previous measurements. Our results demonstrate the wide range of X-ray variability characteristics seen in AXPs and we discuss them in light of current emission models for these sources., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, in emulateapj style. The population of clearly identified anomalous X-ray pulsars has recently grown to seven, however, one candidate anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) still eludes re-confirmation. Here, we present a set of seven Chandra ACIS-S observations of the transient pulsar AX J1845.0-0258, obtained during 2003. Our observations reveal a faint X-ray point source within the ASCA error circle of AX J1845.0-0258's discovery, which we designate CXOU J184454.6-025653 and tentatively identify as the quiescent AXP. Its spectrum is well described by an absorbed single-component blackbody (kT~2.0 keV) or power law (Gamma~1.0) that is steady in flux on timescales of at least months, but fainter than AX J1845.0-0258 was during its 1993 period of X-ray enhancement by at least a factor of 13. Compared to the outburst spectrum of AX J1845.0-0258, CXOU J184454.6-025653 is considerably harder: if truly the counterpart, then its spectral behaviour is contrary to that seen in the established transient AXP XTE J1810-197, which softened from kT~0.67 keV to ~0.18 keV in quiescence. This unexpected result prompts us to examine the possibility that we have observed an unrelated source, and we discuss the implications for AXPs, and magnetars in general., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We have conducted a radio pulsar survey of 56 unidentified gamma-ray sources from the 3rd EGRET catalog which are at intermediate Galactic latitudes (5 deg. < |b| < 73 deg.). For each source, four interleaved 35-minute pointings were made with the 13-beam, 1400-MHz multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. This covered the 95% error box of each source at a limiting sensitivity of about 0.2 mJy to pulsed radio emission for periods P > 10 ms and dispersion measures < 50 pc cm-3. Roughly half of the unidentified gamma-ray sources at |b| > 5 deg. with no proposed active galactic nucleus counterpart were covered in this survey. We detected nine isolated pulsars and four recycled binary pulsars, with three from each class being new. Timing observations suggest that only one of the pulsars has a spin-down luminosity which is even marginally consistent with the inferred luminosity of its coincident EGRET source. Our results suggest that population models, which include the Gould belt as a component, overestimate the number of isolated pulsars among the mid-latitude Galactic gamma-ray sources and that it is unlikely that Gould belt pulsars make up the majority of these sources. However, the possibility of steep pulsar radio spectra and the confusion of terrestrial radio interference with long-period pulsars (P > 200 ms) having very low dispersion measures (< 10 pc cm-3, expected for sources at a distance of less than about 1 kpc) prevent us from strongly ruling out this hypothesis. Our results also do not support the hypothesis that millisecond pulsars make up the majority of these sources. Non-pulsar source classes should therefore be further investigated as possible counterparts to the unidentified EGRET sources at intermediate Galactic latitudes., Comment: 24 pages, including 4 figures and 3 tables. We present the results of Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the transient anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) candidate AX J1845.0-0258 in apparent quiescence. Within the source's error circle, we find a point source and possible counterpart, which we designate CXOU J184454.6-025653. No coherent pulsations are detected, and no extended emission is seen. The source's spectrum is equally well described by a blackbody model of temperature kT~2.0 keV or a power law model with photon index Gamma~1.0. This is considerably harder than was seen for AX J1845.0-0258 during its period of brightening in 1993 (kT~0.6 keV) despite being at least ~13 times fainter. This behavior is opposite to that observed in the case of the established transient AXP, XTE J1810-197. We therefore explore the possibility that CXOU J184454.6-025653 is an unrelated source, and that AX J1845.0-0258 remains undetected since 1993, with flux 260-430 times fainter than at that epoch. We present the results of a near-infrared monitoring program of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1E 2259+586, performed at the Gemini Observatory. This program began three days after the pulsar's 2002 June outburst, and spans ~1.5 years. We find that after an initial increase associated with the outburst, the near-infrared flux decreased continually and reached the pre-burst quiescent level after about one year. We compare both the near-infrared flux enhancement and its decay to those of the X-ray afterglow, and find them to be remarkably consistent. Fitting simple power laws to the RXTE pulsed flux and near-infrared data for t>1 day post-burst, we find the following decay indices: alpha=-0.21+/-0.01 (X-ray), alpha=-0.21+/-0.02 (near-infrared), where flux is a function of time such that F is proportional to t^alpha. This suggests that the enhanced infrared and X-ray fluxes have a physical link post-outburst, most likely from the neutron-star magnetosphere., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJL; minor wording changes, added observation program IDs, improved figure resolution

We have imaged a 1 deg^2 field centered on the known Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G11.2-0.3 at 74, 330, and 1465 MHz with the Very Large Array radio telescope (VLA) and 235 MHz with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The 235, 330, and 1465 MHz data have a resolution of 25 arcsec, while the 74 MHz data have a resolution of 100 arcsec. The addition of this low frequency data has allowed us to confirm the previously reported low frequency turnover in the radio continuum spectra of the two known SNRs in the field: G11.2-0.3 and G11.4-0.1 with unprecedented precision. Such low frequency turnovers are believed to arise from free-free absorption in ionized thermal gas along the lines of site to the SNRs. Our data suggest that the 74 MHz optical depths of the absorbing gas is 0.56 and 1.1 for G11.2-0.3 and G11.4-0.1, respectively. In addition to adding much needed low frequency integrated flux measurements for two known SNRs, we have also detected three new SNRs: G11.15-0.71, G11.03-0.05, and G11.18+0.11. These new SNRs have integrated spectral indices between -0.44 and -0.80. Because of confusion with thermal sources, the high resolution (compared to previous Galactic radio frequency surveys) and surface brightness sensitivity of our observations have been essential to the identification of these new SNRs. With this study we have more than doubled the number of SNRs within just a 1 deg^2 field of view in the inner Galactic plane. This result suggests that future low frequency observations of the Galactic plane of similar quality may go a long way toward alleviating the long recognized incompleteness of Galactic SNR catalogs., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures. We present high-resolution radio and X-ray studies of the composite supernova remnant G11.2-0.3. Using archival VLA data, we perform radio spectral tomography to measure for the first time the spectrum of the shell and plerion separately. We compare the radio morphology of each component to that observed in the hard and soft Chandra X-ray images. We measure the X-ray spectra of the shell and the emission in the interior and discuss the hypothesis that soft X-ray emission interior to the shell is the result of the expanding pulsar wind shocking with the supernova ejecta. Using a recently developed perturbation theory for uasinormal modes (QNM's), we evaluate the shifts in the real and imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies due to a quasi-static perturbation of the black hole spacetime. We show the perturbed QNM spectrum of a black hole can have interesting features using a simple model based on the scalar wave equation., Comment: Published in PRD

Quasinormal mode (QNM) gravitational radiation from black holes is expected to be observed in a few years. A perturbative formula is derived for the shifts in both the real and the imaginary part of the QNM frequencies away from those of an idealized isolated black hole. The formulation provides a tool for understanding how the astrophysical environment surrounding a black hole, e.g., a massive accretion disk, affects the QNM spectrum of gravitational waves. Logarithmic perturbation theory (LPT) is developed and applied to quasinormal modes (QNMs) in open systems. QNMs often do not form a complete set, so LPT is especially convenient because summation over a complete set of unperturbed states is not required. Attention is paid to potentials with exponential tails, and the example of a Poschl-Teller potential is briefly discussed.
