Early adolescent drinking onset is linked to myriad negative consequences. Using the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) baseline to year 8 data, this study (1) leveraged best subsets selection and Cox Proportional Hazards regressions to identify the most robust predictors of adolescent first and regular drinking onset, and (2) examined the clinical utility of drinking onset in forecasting later binge drinking and withdrawal effects. Baseline predictors included youth psychodevelopmental characteristics, cognition, brain structure, family, peer, and neighborhood domains. Participants (N=538) were alcohol-naïve at baseline. The strongest predictors of first and regular drinking onset were positive alcohol expectancies (Hazard Ratios [HRs]=1.67-1.87), easy home alcohol access (HRs=1.62-1.67), more parental solicitation (e.g., inquiring about activities; HRs=1.72-1.76), and less parental control and knowledge (HRs=.72-.73). Robust linear regressions showed earlier first and regular drinking onset predicted earlier transition into binge and regular binge drinking (βs=0.57-0.95). Zero-inflated Poisson regressions revealed that delayed first and regular drinking increased the likelihood (Incidence Rate Ratios [IRR]=1.62 and IRR=1.29, respectively) of never experiencing withdrawal. Findings identified behavioral and environmental factors predicting temporal paths to youthful drinking, dissociated first from regular drinking initiation, and revealed adverse sequelae of younger drinking initiation, supporting efforts to delay drinking onset.

Youth screen media activity is a growing concern, though few studies include objective usage data. Through the longitudinal, U.S.-based Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, youth (mage = 14; n = 1415) self-reported their typical smartphone use and passively recorded three weeks of smartphone use via the ABCD-specific Effortless Assessment Research System (EARS) application. Here we describe and validate passively-sensed smartphone keyboard and app use measures, provide code to harmonize measures across operating systems, and describe trends in adolescent smartphone use. Keyboard and app-use measures were reliable and positively correlated with one another (r = 0.33) and with self-reported use (rs = 0.21-0.35). Participants recorded a mean of 5 h of daily smartphone use, which is two more hours than they self-reported. Further, females logged more smartphone use than males. Smartphone use was recorded at all hours, peaking on average from 8 to 10 PM and lowest from 3 to 5 AM. Social media and texting apps comprised nearly half of all use. Data are openly available to approved investigators ( https://nda.nih.gov/abcd/ ). Information herein can inform use of the ABCD dataset to longitudinally study health and neurodevelopmental correlates of adolescent smartphone use.

This study characterized the patterns and predictors of pre-post changes in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and intentions (KABBIs) among 641 youth who completed evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs. At follow-up, 64.0% of youth showed changes knowledge, communication, and attitudes; 22.5% showed changes in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, communication, and increased sexual intentions; and 13.6% showed changes in attitudes and decreased sexual intentions. The strongest predictors of changes were youth baseline KABBI scores, mode of delivery, and number and type of adaptations made to the curricula. Results underscore the importance of examining the role of youth and program characteristics in predicting KABBI change patterns.

Abstract Fusobacterium nucleatum, a gram-negative oral bacterium, has been consistently validated as a strong contributor to the progression of several types of cancer, including colorectal (CRC) and pancreatic cancer. While previous in vitro studies have shown that intracellular F. nucleatum enhances malignant phenotypes such as cell migration, the dependence of this regulation on features of the tumor microenvironment (TME) such as oxygen levels are wholly uncharacterized. Here we examine the influence of hypoxia in facilitating F. nucleatum invasion and its effects on host responses focusing on changes in the global epigenome and transcriptome. Using a multiomic approach, we analyze epigenomic alterations of H3K27ac and global transcriptomic alterations sustained within a hypoxia and normoxia conditioned CRC cell line HCT116 at 24 h following initial infection with F. nucleatum. Our findings reveal that intracellular F. nucleatum activates signaling pathways and biological processes in host cells similar to those induced upon hypoxia conditioning in the absence of infection. Furthermore, we show that a hypoxic TME favors F. nucleatum invasion and persistence and therefore infection under hypoxia may amplify malignant transformation by exacerbating the effects induced by hypoxia alone. These results motivate future studies to investigate host-microbe interactions in tumor tissue relevant conditions that more accurately define parameters for targeted cancer therapies.

Orientation: Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) has been digitising operations, automating them, and applying new technologies to improve production efficiency and labour productivity. It is essential to digitalise the training programmes based on the competency framework and integrate the framework of the training programme module into the human resource management system (HRMS). Research purpose: This paper studies the training programme based on the competency framework and digitalisation of the training programme into the HRMS of EVN. Motivation for the study: The study innovates human resource management in the way it functions. This study presents the process of designing the training programmes based on EVN’s competency framework and integrates them into the HRMS. Research approach/design and method: The article uses the desk method and the case study. A case study of EVN presents a comprehensive methodology for designing training programmes based on a competency framework. Main findings: The training programmes digitalise into the EVN system. Using the information system of HRMS in EVN, 27 training programmes corresponding to 22 job families are described and integrated into HRMS. Practical/managerial implications: The framework of the training programme is visualised based on suggestions. Some critical successes are present, and recommendations are suggested to update and confirm training programmes. Contribution/value-add: The training programmes have a clear structure, training methods, and references to the EVN e-learning system. All training programmes are managed systematically and synchronously to connect to the next steps in competency assessment and personal development roadmap in EVN.

Two known species of the genus Sporonchulus, namely S. ibitiensis and S. vagabundus, collected from natural areas of Vietnam, are characterized, including descriptions and illustrations of both species, as well as SEM observations and molecular (18S-, 28S rDNA) analyses of S. ibitiensis. The identity of the two species is discussed, with detailed comparison with previously known populations. The taxonomy of the genus is updated, presenting a diagnosis, list of species, key to their identification, and a compendium of their main morphometrics. An integrative analysis, combining morphological data with a cladistic approach and the first molecular study for a representative of Sporonchulus, better supports a narrow relationship of this genus with Mononchidae than with Mylonchulidae members, however further research should be conducted to elucidate its phylogeny.

The millipede family Polydesmidae Leach, 1816 is reviewed in the scope of the Vietnamese fauna. The distribution of the species, Polydesmus vietnamicus Nguyen, 2009 is extended northward to Ha Giang Province. A new cavernicolous polydesmid, Pacidesmus tuachua sp. nov., is described from two caves in northwestern Vietnam, representing the first record of the genus from Vietnam. Extensive illustrations and DNA barcodes are provided for both species, a revised key is presented to all 12 species of Pacidesmus Golovatch, 1991, as well as a key to all eight genera of Asian Polydesmidae.

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to validate the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) in a Vietnamese context. Using the DLOQ as a research tool, this study also investigated the impact of demographic features on participants' perceptions of learning organizations (LOs). Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from 748 valid responses to a version of the DLOQ translated into Vietnamese. Cronbach's alpha and confirmatory factor analysis were used to test the reliable internal consistency and validity of the DLOQ in a Vietnamese context. Then, one-way ANOVA analyses and independent sample "t"-tests were used to assess the differences produced by the characteristics of respondents and their enterprises. Findings: The results of this study show that three versions of the DLOQ are applicable to a Vietnamese context. The findings of this study also suggest that several demographic features produced significant differences in respondents' perceptions of organizational learning. Research limitations/implications: There are several limitations of this study. First, this study used self-reporting, and individual perspectives of questions can bring about perception bias. Also, the length of the original version of the DLOQ (i.e. 43 questions) might impact the results, because of participants' lack of patience and focus. In addition, various levels of organizational learning may cause some confusion, leading to misinterpretation. Finally, the overrepresentation of large state-owned enterprises in the service industry in the sample may have caused bias when interpreting the results. Future research should be conducted to further validate and extend the findings of this study for small- and medium-sized enterprises, which account for 98% of businesses in Vietnam. It is strongly suggested that scholars use the validated Vietnamese DLOQ to measure the impacts of learning culture on learning-related results in Vietnam, such as individual/team/organizational performance, staff satisfaction and so on. Finally, future research should consider making appropriate study designs to collect and analyze data from various resources and not be limited to self-reported questionnaires. This would minimize common method bias. Practical implications: Application of the DLOQ provides valuable insights and understanding for use in designing and evaluating efforts to learn at all levels in Vietnamese enterprises. Social implications: Regarding designing, adjusting and implementing strategies to boost the learning capacity of an organization, the findings of this study also imply that business leaders and practitioners in Vietnamese enterprises can build strategies for enhancing LO culture without biases stemming from gender or management level. However, education level and work experience should be considered critical features that could impact the effectiveness of such strategies. Also, understanding and applying the DLOQ when building LOs will promote Vietnamese businesses' competitiveness and international integration. Originality/value: Using statistical results, this study confirmed that a rigorously translated Vietnamese version of the DLOQ produced reliable measurement scores with a construct validity sufficient to measure LOs in a Vietnamese context.

BackgroundLeft ventricular (LV) wall motion assessment is an important adjunct in addition to perfusion defects in assessing ischemic changes. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and utility of performing feature tracking (FT) in pediatric patients with coronary anomalies undergoing dobutamine stress CMR to assess wall motion abnormalities (WMA) and perfusion defects.MethodThis is a retrospective study where 10 patients with an inducible first-pass perfusion (FPP) defect and 10 without were selected. Global LV circumferential strain/strain rate (GCS/GCSR) was measured at rest and at peak stress (systole and diastole) using a commercially available feature tracking software. Peak GCS and GCSR were compared to indexed wall motion score (WMSI) between groups with and without FPP defect and in subjects with and without WMA.ResultsThe median age of patients was 13.5 years (Q1, 11 years; Q3, 15 years). Five subjects had qualitatively WMA at peak stress. A moderate correlation of GCS with WMSI at peak stress (0.48, p = 0.026) and a significant difference between GCS at rest and stress in patients with no inducible WMA (p = 0.007) were seen. No significant difference was noted in GCS between rest and stress in patients with WMA (p = 0.13). There was a larger absolute GCS/GCSR at peak stress in subjects with no inducible FPP defect or WMA.ConclusionSmaller absolute GCS and a lack of significant change in GCS at peak stress in those with inducible WMA or perfusion defect are suggestive of compromised LV deformation in subjects with inducible WMA. Given these findings, GCS derived from CMR-FT may be used to objectively assess WMA in pediatric patients undergoing stress CMR.

Background and objectivesLimited data are available on the contemporary epidemiology, clinical management, and health care utilization for pediatric urinary tract infection (UTI) due to third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (G3CR) in the United States. The objective is to describe the epidemiology, antimicrobial treatment and response, and health care utilization associated with G3CR UTI.MethodsMultisite, matched cohort-control study including children with G3CR UTI versus non-G3CR UTI. UTI was defined as per American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, and G3CR as resistance to ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, or ceftazidime. We collected data from the acute phase of illness to 6 months thereafter.ResultsAmong 107 children with G3CR UTI and 206 non-G3CR UTI with documented assessment of response, the proportion with significant improvement on initial therapy was similar (52% vs 57%; odds ratio [OR], 0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.44-1.50). Patients with G3CR were more frequently hospitalized at presentation (38% vs 17%; OR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.77-5.19). In the follow-up period, more patients with G3CR had urine cultures (75% vs 53%; OR, 2.61; 95% CI, 1.33-5.24), antimicrobial treatment of any indication (53% vs 29%; OR, 2.82; 95% CI, 1.47-5.39), and subspecialty consultation (23% vs 6%; OR, 4.52; 95% CI, 2.10-10.09). In multivariate analysis, previous systemic antimicrobial therapy remained a significant risk factor for G3CR UTI (adjusted OR, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.06-3.44).ConclusionsWe did not observe a significant difference in response to therapy between G3CR and susceptible UTI, but subsequent health care utilization was significantly increased.

This qualitative research aims to identify faculty-wide competencies for the purpose of faculty development in the Vietnamese higher education context. Combining with the critical incident method, this study conducted in-depth interviews with senior faculty members and educational leaders at Vietnam's public higher education institutions to identify key areas for Vietnamese academics to improve their professional competence. In light of the competency-based approach, the study classifies competencies for faculty development into five domains: "specialty-related," "teaching," "research," "personal development," and "communication domains." Drawing on the study's findings and domestic and international sources of references, we propose a general competency-based professional development framework that aims to guide faculty development initiatives at multiple levels. While focusing on Vietnam, this research contributes to broadening our knowledge of educational quality improvement and faculty development efforts in the changing context of higher education globally.

We performed phylogenetic analysis on dengue virus serotype 2 Cosmopolitan genotype in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We document virus emergence, probable routes of introduction, and timeline of events. Our findings highlight the need for continuous, systematic genomic surveillance to manage outbreaks and forecast future epidemics.

Due to the negative impacts the dye may have on aquatic habitats and human health, it is often found in industrial effluent and poses a threat to public health. Hence, to solve this problem, this study developed magnetic adsorbents that can remove synthetic dyes like methylene blue. The adsorbent, in the form of beads, consists of a polymer blend of chitosan, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (average size of 19.03 ± 4.25 nm). The adsorption and desorption of MB from beads were carried out at pH values of 7 and 3.85, respectively. At a concentration of 9 mg/L, the loading capacity and the loading amount of MB after 5 days peaked at 29.75 ± 1.53% and 297.48 ± 15.34 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the entrapment efficiency of MB reached 29.42 ± 2.19% at a concentration of 8 mg/L. The cumulative desorption capacity of the adsorbent after 13 days was at its maximum at 7.72 ± 0.5%. The adsorption and desorption kinetics were evaluated.

Background Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred access for chronic hemodialysis (HD) in children and adolescents, but central venous catheter use is still high. Methods Retrospective chart review of children and adolescents with AVF created between January 2003 and December 2015 was performed to assess primary failure (PF), maturation time, functional primary and functional cumulative patency, and potential risk factors for AVF dysfunction. Results Ninety-nine AVF were created in 79 patients (54% male; 7-24 years; 16-147 kg) by experienced surgeons. Duplex ultrasonography vein mapping was used to assist with site selection. PF occurred in 17 AVF (17%) in 14 patients. Patient age, gender, ethnicity, underlying disease, time on dialysis, and AVF site were not associated with PF or patency. Coagulation abnormality was positively associated with PF (p = 0.03). Function was achieved in 82 AVF (83%) in 77 patients (97%). Median maturation time was 83 days (range 32-271). AVF were accessed via buttonholes. Functional primary patency was 95%, 84%, and 53% at 1, 2, and 5 years. Overall 1- and 2-year functional cumulative patency was 95%, but lower for small patients 16-30 kg (88%) and those greater than 80 kg (91%). The 5-year patency rate was 80%, but significantly lower for 16-30 kg (59%) and greater than 80 kg (55%). Risk analysis showed significantly better patency for 31-45 kg and 46-80 kg groups (p < 0.01), non-obese BMI (p = 0.01), and buttonhole self-cannulation (p = 0.03). Conclusions This study provides more information about successful AVF with buttonhole cannulation in pediatric hemodialysis patients lending additional support for AVF use in pediatrics. A new millipede species, Paracortina kyrang sp. nov., is described from a cave in Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam. The new species is diagnosed by having an extraordinarily long projection on the head of males, reduced eyes, a gonocoxite with two processes, a long and slender gonotelopodite with two long, clavate prefemoroidal processes densely covered with long macrosetae apically, and with a distal, reverse, short spine on mesal side, and a rather sinuous distal part of the telopodite. This is the third species of the genus that is known from Vietnam. A brief comparison of some secondary sexual characters is made.

Healthy aging is associated with a multitude of structural changes in the brain. These physical age-related changes are accompanied by increased variability in neural activity of all kinds, and this increased variability, collectively referred to as "neural noise," is argued to contribute to age-related cognitive decline. In this study, we examine the relationship between two particular types of neural noise in aging. We recorded scalp EEG from younger (20-30 years old) and older (60-70 years old) adults performing a spatial visual discrimination task. First, we used the 1/f-like exponent of the EEG power spectrum, a putative marker of neural noise, to assess baseline shifts toward a noisier state in aging. Next, we examined age-related decreases in the trial-by-trial consistency of visual stimulus processing. Finally, we examined to what extent these two age-related noise markers are related, hypothesizing that greater baseline noise would increase the variability of stimulus-evoked responses. We found that visual cortical baseline noise was higher in older adults, and the consistency of older adults' oscillatory alpha (8-12 Hz) phase responses to visual targets was also lower than that of younger adults. Crucially, older adults with the highest levels of baseline noise also had the least consistent alpha phase responses, whereas younger adults with more consistent phase responses achieved better behavioral performance. These results establish a link between tonic neural noise and stimulus-associated neural variability in aging. Moreover, they suggest that tonic age-related increases in baseline noise might diminish sensory processing and, as a result, subsequent cognitive performance.

The ribosomally produced antimicrobial peptides of bacteria (bacteriocins) represent an unexplored source of membrane-active antibiotics. We designed a library of linear peptides from a circular bacteriocin and show that pore-formation dynamics in bacterial membranes are tunable via selective amino acid substitution. We observed antibacterial interpeptide synergy indicating that fundamentally altering interactions with the membrane enables synergy. Our findings suggest an approach for engineering pore-formation through rational peptide design and increasing the utility of novel antimicrobial peptides by exploiting synergy.

ObjectivesAlcohol and cannabis remain the substances most widely used by adolescents. Better understanding of the dynamic relationship between trajectories of substance use in relation to neuropsychological functioning is needed. The aim of this study was to examine the different impacts of within- and between-person changes in alcohol and cannabis use on neuropsychological functioning over multiple time points.MethodsHierarchical linear modeling examined the effects of alcohol and cannabis use on neuropsychological functioning over the course of 14 years in a sample of 175 adolescents (aged 12-15 years at baseline).ResultsTime-specific fluctuations in alcohol use (within-person effect) predicted worse performance across time on the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence Block Design subtest (B = -.05, SE = .02, p = .01). Greater mean levels of percent days of cannabis use across time (between-person effect) were associated with an increased contrast score between Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Color Word Inhibition and Color Naming conditions (B = .52, SE = .14, p < .0001) and poorer performance over time on Block Design (B = -.08, SE = .04, p = .03). Neither alcohol and/nor cannabis use over time was associated with performance in the verbal memory and processing speed domains.ConclusionsGreater cumulative cannabis use over adolescence may be linked to poorer inhibitory control and visuospatial functioning performance, whereas more proximal increases in alcohol consumption during adolescence may drive alcohol-related performance decrements in visuospatial functioning. Results from this prospective study add to the growing body of literature on the impact of alcohol and cannabis use on cognition from adolescent to young adulthood.
