Models of the galaxy-halo connection are needed to understand both galaxy clusters and large scale structure. To make said models, we need a robust method that assigns galaxies to halos and matches the observed and simulated stellar-halo mass relation. We employ an empirical Subhalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) model implemented in the halos module of SkyPy which assigns blue and red galaxies based on the Peng et al. (2010) (arXiv:1003.4747v2) model containing three parameters: $M_\mu$ (halo mass where half the galaxies assigned should be quenched), $\sigma$ (transition width from star forming to quenched) and $b$ (baseline quenched fraction at low mass). We test two sets of galaxy stellar mass functions for four populations of galaxies (central/satellite, blue/red) and run parameter estimation using Approximate Bayesian Computation over each model when compared to a set of applicable literature models. For the Weigel et al. (2016) (arXiv:1604.00008v1) galaxies we find best fit values of log $M_\mu = 11.94^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$, $\sigma = 0.49^{+0.04}_{-0.04}$ and $b = 0.31^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$. For the Birrer et al. (2014) (arXiv:1401.3162v2) galaxies we find best fit values of log $M_\mu = 11.93^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$, $\sigma = 0.53^{+0.04}_{-0.04}$ and $b = 0.51^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$. Overall, we demonstrate that these constraints produce a model that is consistent with literature models for the central galaxies. We present a publicly-available toolkit of flight-proven hardware and software to retrieve 5 TB of data or small physical samples from a stratospheric balloon platform. Before launch, a capsule is attached to the balloon, and rises with it. Upon remote command, the capsule is released and descends via parachute, continuously transmitting its location. Software to predict the trajectory can be used to select a safe but accessible landing site. We dropped two such capsules from the SuperBIT telescope, in September 2019. The capsules took ~37 minutes to descend from ~30 km altitude. They drifted 32 km and 19 km horizontally, but landed within 300 m and 600 m of their predicted landing sites. We found them easily, and successfully recovered the data. We welcome interest from other balloon teams for whom the technology would be useful.

Balloon-borne telescopes present unique thermal design challenges which are a combination of those present for both space and ground telescopes. At altitudes of 35-40 km, convection effects are minimal and difficult to characterize. Radiation and conduction are the predominant heat transfer mechanisms reducing the thermal design options. For long duration flights payload mass is a function of power consumption making it an important optimization parameter. SuperBIT, or the Super-pressure Balloon-borne Imaging Telescope, aims to study weak lensing using a 0.5m modified Dall-Kirkham telescope capable of achieving 0.02" stability and capturing deep exposures from visible to near UV wavelengths. To achieve the theoretical stratospheric diffraction-limited resolution of 0.25", mirror deformation gradients must be kept to within 20nm. The thermal environment must thus be stable on time scales of an hour and the thermal gradients must be minimized on the telescope. We present a gravitational lensing and X-ray analysis of a massive galaxy cluster and its surroundings. The core of MACS\,J0717.5+3745 ($M(R<1\,{\rm Mpc})\sim$\,$2$$\times$$10^{15}\,\msun$, $z$=$0.54$) is already known to contain four merging components. We show that this is surrounded by at least seven additional substructures with masses ranging from $3.8-6.5\times10^{13}\,\msun$, at projected radii $1.6$ to $4.9$\,Mpc. We compare MACS\,J0717 to mock lensing and X-ray observations of similarly rich clusters in cosmological simulations. The low gas fraction of substructures predicted by simulations turns out to match our observed values of $1$--$4\%$. Comparing our data to three similar simulated halos, we infer a typical growth rate and substructure infall velocity. That suggests MACS\,J0717 could evolve into a system similar to, but more massive than, Abell\,2744 by $z=0.31$, and into a $\sim$\,$10^{16}\,\msun$ supercluster by $z=0$. The radial distribution of infalling substructure suggests that merger events are strongly episodic; however we find that the smooth accretion of surrounding material remains the main source of mass growth even for such massive clusters., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first quantum key distribution (QKD) experiment over multicore fiber. With space division multiplexing, we demonstrate that weak QKD signals can coexist with classical data signals launched at full power in a 53 km 7-core fiber, while showing negligible degradation in performance. Based on a characterization of intercore crosstalk, we perform additional simulations highlighting that classical data bandwidths beyond 1Tb/s can be supported with high speed QKD on the same fiber., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Security in quantum cryptography is continuously challenged by inventive attacks targeting the real components of a cryptographic setup, and duly restored by new counter-measures to foil them. Due to their high sensitivity and complex design, detectors are the most frequently attacked components. Recently it was shown that two-photon interference from independent light sources can be exploited to avoid the use of detectors at the two ends of the communication channel. This new form of detection-safe quantum cryptography, called Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD), has been experimentally demonstrated, but with modest delivered key rates. Here we introduce a novel pulsed laser seeding technique to obtain high-visibility interference from gain-switched lasers and thereby perform quantum cryptography without detector vulnerabilities with unprecedented bit rates, in excess of 1 Mb/s. This represents a 2 to 6 orders of magnitude improvement over existing implementations and for the first time promotes the new scheme as a practical resource for quantum secure communications., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We perform a weak-lensing study of the nearby cool-core galaxy clusters, Hydra A ($z=0.0538$) and A478 ($z=0.0881$), of which brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) host powerful activities of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). For each cluster, the observed tangential shear profile is well described either by a single Navarro--Frenk--White model or a two-component model including the BCG as an unresolved point mass. For A478, we determine the BCG and its host-halo masses from a joint fit to weak-lensing and stellar photometry measurements. We find that the choice of initial mass functions (IMFs) can introduce a factor of two uncertainty in the BCG mass, whereas the BCG host halo mass is well constrained by data. We perform a joint analysis of weak-lensing and stellar kinematics data available for the Hydra A cluster, which allows us to constrain the central mass profile without assuming specific IMFs. We find that the central mass profile ($r<300$kpc) determined from the joint analysis is in excellent agreement with those from independent measurements, including dynamical masses estimated from the cold gas disk component, X-ray hydrostatic total mass estimates, and the central stellar mass estimated based on the Salpeter IMF. The observed dark-matter fraction around the BCG for Hydra A is found to be smaller than those predicted by adiabatic contraction models, suggesting the importance of other physical processes, such as the the AGN feedback and/or dissipationless mergers., Comment: accepted for the publication in MNRAS, 15 pages 10 figures

We conduct a joint X-ray and weak-lensing study of four relaxed galaxy clusters (Hydra A, A478, A1689 and A1835) observed by both Suzaku and Subaru out to virial radii, with an aim to understand recently-discovered unexpected feature of the ICM in cluster outskirts. We show that the average hydrostatic-to-lensing total mass ratio for the four clusters decreases from \sim 70% to \sim 40% as the overdensity contrast decreases from 500 to the virial value.The average gas mass fraction from lensing total mass estimates increases with cluster radius and agrees with the cosmic mean baryon fraction within the virial radius, whereas the X-ray-based gas fraction considerably exceeds the cosmic values due to underestimation of the hydrostatic mass. We also develop a new advanced method for determining normalized cluster radial profiles for multiple X-ray observables by simultaneously taking into account both their radial dependence and multivariate scaling relations with weak-lensing masses. Although the four clusters span a range of halo mass, concentration, X-ray luminosity and redshift, we find that the gas entropy, pressure, temperature and density profiles are all remarkably self-similar when scaled with the lensing M_200 mass and r_200 radius.The entropy monotonically increases out to \sim 0.5r_200 following the accretion shock heating model K(r)\propto r^1.1, and flattens at \simgt 0.5r_200.The universality of the scaled entropy profiles indicates that the thermalization mechanism over the entire cluster region (>0.1r_200) is controlled by gravitation in a common to all clusters, although the heating efficiency in the outskirts needs to be modified from the standard law.The bivariate scaling functions of the gas density and temperature reveal that the flattening of the outskirts entropy profile is caused by the steepening of the temperature, rather than the flattening of the gas density., Comment: accepted for publication in PASJ : 13 pages 6 figures and 4 tables
