Abstract: Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. The detailed results obtained in the first observations of the Crab pulsar with LST-1 show the potential that CTAO will have to study this type of sources., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Abstract: In this work we try to search for signals generated by ultra-heavy dark matter at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) data. We look for possible gamma-ray by dark matter annihilation or decay from 16 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the field of view of LHAASO. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect detection of dark matter which have low fluxes of astrophysical $\gamma$-ray background while large amount of dark matter. By analyzing more than 700 days observational data at LHAASO, no significant dark matter signal from 1 TeV to 1 EeV is detected. Accordingly we derive the most stringent constraints on the ultra-heavy dark matter annihilation cross-section up to EeV. Abstract: The KM2A is the largest sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). It consists of 5216 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs). The data recorded by the EDs and MDs are used to reconstruct primary information of cosmic ray and gamma-ray showers. This information is used for physical analysis in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. To ensure the reliability of the LHAASO-KM2A data, a three-level quality control system has been established. It is used to monitor the status of detector units, stability of reconstructed parameters and the performance of the array based on observations of the Crab Nebula and Moon shadow. This paper will introduce the control system and its application on the LHAASO-KM2A data collected from August 2021 to July 2023. During this period, the pointing and angular resolution of the array were stable. From the observations of the Moon shadow and Crab Nebula, the results achieved using the two methods are consistent with each other. According to the observation of the Crab Nebula at energies from 25 TeV to 100 TeV, the time averaged pointing errors are estimated to be $-0.003^{\circ} \pm 0.005^{\circ}$ and $0.001^{\circ} \pm 0.006^{\circ}$ in the R.A. and Dec directions, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The first source catalog of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory reported the detection of a very-high-energy gamma ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. In this paper a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this point-like source have been carried. The best-fit position of the TeV source ($\rm{RA}=185.05^{\circ}\pm0.04^{\circ}$, $\rm{Dec}=29.25^{\circ}\pm0.03^{\circ}$) is compatible with NGC 4278 within $\sim0.03$ degree. Variation analysis shows an indication of the variability at a few months level in the TeV band, which is consistent with low frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV $\gamma$-ray emissions from this low-luminosity AGN NGC 4278. The observations by LHAASO-WCDA during active period has a significance level of 8.8\,$\sigma$ with best-fit photon spectral index $\varGamma=2.56\pm0.14$ and a flux $f_{1-10\,\rm{TeV}}=(7.0\pm1.1_{\rm{sta}}\pm0.35_{\rm{syst}})\times10^{-13}\,\rm{photons\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, or approximately $5\%$ of the Crab Nebula. 5. Evidence of the gamma-ray counterpart from nova FM Cir with Fermi-LAT

Abstract: We report the analysis results of X-ray and gamma-ray data of the nova FM Cir taken by Swift and Fermi-LAT. The gamma-ray emission from FM Cir can be identified with a significance level of 3sigma within 40 days after the nova eruption (2018 January 19) while we bin the light curve per day. The significance can further exceed 4 sigma confidence level if we accumulate longer time (i.e., 20 days) to bin the light curve. The gamma-ray counterpart could be identified with a Test Statistic (TS) above 4 until 180 days after the eruption. The duration of the gamma-ray detection was longer than those reported in the previous studies of the other novae detected in the GeV range. The significant X-ray emission was observed after the gamma-ray flux level fell below the sensitivity of Fermi-LAT. The hardness ratio of the X-ray emission decreased rapidly with time, and the spectra were dominated by blackbody radiation from the hot white dwarf. Abstract: KM2A is one of the main sub-arrays of LHAASO, working on gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics at energies above 10 TeV. Detector simulation is the important foundation for estimating detector performance and data analysis. It is a big challenge to simulate the KM2A detector in the framework of Geant4 due to the need to track numerous photons from a large number of detector units (>6000) with large altitude difference (30 m) and huge coverage (1.3 km^2). In this paper, the design of the KM2A simulation code G4KM2A based on Geant4 is introduced. The process of G4KM2A is optimized mainly in memory consumption to avoid memory overffow. Some simpliffcations are used to signiffcantly speed up the execution of G4KM2A. The running time is reduced by at least 30 times compared to full detector simulation. The particle distributions and the core/angle resolution comparison between simulation and experimental data of the full KM2A array are also presented, which show good agreement.

Abstract: We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at $3.67 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.15$ PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -$2.7413 \pm 0.0004 \pm 0.0050$, while above the knee, it is -$3.128 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.027$, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -$0.1200 \pm 0.0003 \pm 0.0341$. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: For decades, supernova remnants (SNRs) have been considered the prime sources of Galactic Cosmic rays (CRs). But whether SNRs can accelerate CR protons to PeV energies and thus dominate CR flux up to the knee is currently under intensive theoretical and phenomenological debate. The direct test of the ability of SNRs to operate as CR PeVatrons can be provided by ultrahigh-energy (UHE; $E_\gamma \geq 100$~TeV) $\gamma$-rays. In this context, the historical SNR Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is considered one of the most promising target for UHE observations. This paper presents the observation of Cas A and its vicinity by the LHAASO KM2A detector. The exceptional sensitivity of LHAASO KM2A in the UHE band, combined with the young age of Cas A, enabled us to derive stringent model-independent limits on the energy budget of UHE protons and nuclei accelerated by Cas A at any epoch after the explosion. Abstract: The highest energy gamma-rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have important implications for their radiation mechanism. Here we report for the first time the detection of gamma-rays up to 13 TeV from the brightest GRB 221009A by the Large High Altitude Air-shower Observatory (LHAASO). The LHAASO-KM2A detector registered more than 140 gamma-rays with energies above 3 TeV during 230$-$900s after the trigger. The intrinsic energy spectrum of gamma-rays can be described by a power-law after correcting for extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption. Such a hard spectrum challenges the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario of relativistic electrons for the afterglow emission above several TeV. Observations of gamma-rays up to 13 TeV from a source with a measured redshift of z=0.151 hints more transparency in intergalactic space than previously expected. Alternatively, one may invoke new physics such as Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) or an axion origin of very high energy (VHE) signals., Comment: 49pages, 11figures

Abstract: Aims. LST-1, the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope for the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory, is concluding its commissioning in Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma. The proximity of LST-1 (Large-Sized Telescope 1) to the two MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes permits observations of the same gamma-ray events with both systems. Methods. We describe the joint LST-1+MAGIC analysis pipeline and use simultaneous Crab Nebula observations and Monte Carlo simulations to assess the performance of the three-telescope system. The addition of the LST-1 telescope allows the recovery of events in which one of the MAGIC images is too dim to survive analysis quality cuts. Results. Thanks to the resulting increase in the collection area and stronger background rejection, we find a significant improvement in sensitivity, allowing the detection of 30% weaker fluxes in the energy range between 200 GeV and 3 TeV. The spectrum of the Crab Nebula, reconstructed in the energy range ~60 GeV to ~10 TeV, is in agreement with previous measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

12. An Investigation of the state changes of PSR J2021+4026 and the Vela pulsar

Abstract: We investigate the high energy emission activities of two bright gamma-ray pulsars, PSR~J2021+4026 and Vela. For PSR~J2021+4026, the state changes in the gamma-ray flux and spin-down rate have been observed. We report that the long-term evolution of the gamma-ray flux and timing behavior of PSR~J2021+4026 suggests a new gamma-ray flux recovery at around MJD~58910 and a flux decrease around MJD~59500. During this epoch, the staying time, the gamma-ray flux difference and spin-down rate are smaller than previous epochs in the same state. The waiting timescale of the quasi-periodic state changes is similar to the waiting timescale of the glitch events of the Vela pulsar. For the Vela pulsar, the quench of the radio pulse was in a timescale of $\sim0.2$~s after the 2016 glitch, and the glitch may disturb the structure of the magnetosphere. Nevertheless, we did not find any evidence for a long-term change in the gamma-ray emission properties using years of $Fermi$-LAT data, and therefore, no long-term magnetosphere structural change. We also conduct searching for photons above 100~GeV using 15-year $Fermi$-LAT data, and found none. Our results provide additional information for the relation between the state change of the gamma-ray emission and the glitch event., Comment: 13 pages,9 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

Abstract: CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. Abstract: We present the first catalog of very-high energy and ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) from March 2021 to September 2022 and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array (KM2A) from January 2020 to September 2022. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering declination from $-$20$^{\circ}$ to 80$^{\circ}$. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than $2^\circ$ and a significance of detection at $> 5\sigma$. Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ($E > 100$ TeV) emission at $> 4\sigma$ significance level. Abstract: The diffuse Galactic $\gamma$-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this work we report the measurements of diffuse $\gamma$-rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner ($15^{\circ}10$~TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of $-2.99\pm0.04$, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of $\sim3$ than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of $-2.99\pm0.07$ is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for $10\lesssim E\lesssim60$ TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. Abstract: The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3~PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy $\gamma$-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte--Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a $\gamma$-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 hours of exposure. CTA is also shown to have excellent potential to confirm these sources as PeVatrons in deep observations with $\mathcal{O}(100)$ hours of exposure per source., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract: LHAASO J2108+5157 is one of the few known unidentified Ultra-High-Energy (UHE) gamma-ray sources with no Very-High-Energy (VHE) counterpart, recently discovered by the LHAASO collaboration. We observed LHAASO J2108+5157 in the X-ray band with XMM-Newton in 2021 for a total of 3.8 hours and at TeV energies with the Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), yielding 49 hours of good quality data. In addition, we analyzed 12 years of Fermi-LAT data, to better constrain emission of its High-Energy (HE) counterpart 4FGL J2108.0+5155. We found an excess (3.7 sigma) in the LST-1 data at energies E > 3 TeV. Further analysis in the whole LST-1 energy range assuming a point-like source, resulted in a hint (2.2 sigma) of hard emission which can be described with a single power law with photon index Gamma = 1.6 +- 0.2 between 0.3 - 100 TeV. We did not find any significant extended emission which could be related to a Supernova Remnant (SNR) or Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) in the XMM-Newton data, which puts strong constraints on possible synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons. The LST-1 and LHAASO observations can be explained as inverse Compton-dominated leptonic emission of relativistic electrons with a cutoff energy of $100^{+70}_{-30}$ TeV. The low magnetic field in the source imposed by the X-ray upper limits on synchrotron emission is compatible with a hypothesis of a PWN or a TeV halo. The lack of a pulsar in the neighborhood of the UHE source is a challenge to the PWN/TeV-halo scenario. The UHE gamma rays can also be explained as $\pi^0$ decay-dominated hadronic emission due to interaction of relativistic protons with one of the two known molecular clouds in the direction of the source. The hard spectrum in the LST-1 band is compatible with protons escaping a shock around a middle-aged SNR because of their high low-energy cut-off., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables; Astronomy and Astrophysics (accepted on 6 March 2023)

Abstract: The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: There have been substantial improvements on Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data and analysis tools since the last analysis on the mid-aged supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 79 (Auchettl et al. 2014). Recent multi-wavelength studies confirmed its interaction with molecular clouds. About $0.36\degr$ north from Kes 79, a powerful pulsar -- PSR J1853+0056 also deserves our attention. In this work, we analyse the 11.5-year Fermi-LAT data to investigate the $\gamma$-ray feature in/around this complex region. Our result shows a more significant detection ($\sim$34.8$\sigma$ in 0.1--50 GeV) for this region. With $\ge$5 GeV data, we detect two extended sources -- Src-N (the brighter one; radius $\approx0.31\degr$) concentrated at the north of the SNR while enclosing PSR J1853+0056, and Src-S (radius $\approx0.58\degr$) concentrated at the south of the SNR. Their spectra have distinct peak energies ($\sim$1.0 GeV for Src-N and $\lesssim$0.5 GeV for Src-S), suggesting different origins for them. In our hadronic model that includes the leaked cosmic-rays (CRs) from the shock-cloud collision, even with extreme values of parameters, SNR Kes 79 can by no means provide enough CRs reaching clouds at Src-N to explain the local GeV spectrum. We propose that the Src-N emission could be predominantly reproduced by a putative pulsar wind nebula (PWN) powered by PSR J1853+0056. On the other hand, our same hadronic model can reproduce a majority of the GeV emission at Src-S with typical values of parameters, while the three known pulsars inside Src-S release a total power that is too low to account for half of its $\gamma$-ray emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

Abstract: The Wide Field-of-View Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) and the Water Cherenkov Detector Arrays (WCDA) of LHAASO are designed to work in combination for measuring the energy spectra of various cosmic ray species over a very wide energy range from a few TeV to 10 PeV. The energy calibration of WCDA can be achieved with a proven technique of measuring the westward shift of the Moon shadow of galactic cosmic rays due to the geomagnetic field. This deflection angle $\Delta$ is inversely proportional to the energy of the cosmic rays. The precise measurements of the shifts by WCDA allows us to calibrate its energy scale for energies as high as 35 TeV. The energy scale measured by WCDA can be used to cross calibrate the energy reconstructed by WFCTA, which spans the whole energy range up to 10 PeV. In this work, we will demonstrate the feasibility of the method using the data collected from April 2019 to January 2020 by the WFCTA array and WCDA-1 detector, the first of the three water Cherenkov ponds, already commissioned at LHAASO site.

Abstract: Context: The supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6-0.4 shows a non-thermal radio shell, however, no {\gamma}-ray or X-ray counterparts have been found for it thus far. One TeV source, HESS J1858+020, was found near the SNR and this source is spatially associated with some clouds at 3.6 kpc. Aims: To attain a better understanding of the origin of HESS J1858+020, we further investigate the association between SNR cosmic rays (CRs) and the clouds through the Fermi-LAT analysis and hadronic modeling. Methods: We performed the Fermi-LAT analysis to explore the GeV emission in and around the SNR. We explored the SNR physics with previously observed multi-wavelength data. We built a hadronic model using runaway CRs of the SNR to explain the GeV-TeV observation. Results: We found a hard GeV source (SrcX2) that is spatially coincident with both HESS J1858+020 and a molecular cloud complex at 3.6 kpc. In addition, a soft GeV source (SrcX1) was found at the northern edge of the SNR. The GeV spectrum of SrcX2 connects well with the TeV spectrum of HESS J1858+020. The entire {\gamma}-ray spectrum ranges from several GeV up to tens of TeV and it follows a power-law with an index of ~2.15. We discuss several pieces of observational evidence to support the middle-aged SNR argument. Using runaway CRs from the SNR, our hadronic model explains the GeV-TeV emission at HESS J1858+020, with a diffusion coefficient that is much lower than the Galactic value.

Abstract: The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Abstract: As a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to cover a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for gamma-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, a half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the pipeline of KM2A data analysis and the first observation on the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. We detect gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10$-$100 TeV and $>$100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE =(1.13$\pm$0.05$_{stat}$$\pm$0.08$_{sys}$)$\times$10$^{-14}$$\cdot$(E/20TeV)$^{-3.09\pm0.06_{stat}\pm0.02_{sys}}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ TeV$^{-1}$. It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. Abstract: Pulsar binaries, in particular redback systems, provide good sources to study the pulsar wind flow and its interaction with the companion stars. {\it Fermi}-LAT have proposed probable pulsar binary candidates in its catalogs. To identify pulsar binary sources from the catalog, orbital modulation search of binary candidates is an effective way. TESS observes in survey mode for a large part of the sky and thus provide an excellent data set to periodicity search of pulsar binary candidates by observing the flux variation, thought to mainly come from the stellar companion. Using TESS data we look for flux modulation of five pulsar binaries (or candidates) with reported orbital periods, including PSR J1023+0038, 3FGL J0523.3-2528, 3FGL J0212.1+5320, 3FGL J0744.1-2523 and PSR J1417-4402, demonstrating that TESS photometric data are very useful in identifying periodicities of redback-like systems. Abstract: We report observations of a transient source \fermi\ from radio to \grs. \fermi\ was discovered by the {\it Fermi-LAT} in May 2017. Follow-up {\it Swift-XRT} observations revealed three flaring episodes through March 2018, and the peak X-ray flux is about $10^3$ higher than the {\it ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS)} flux upper limit. Optical spectral measurements taken by the {\it Magellan 6.5-m telescope} and the {\it Lick-Shane telescope} both show a largely featureless spectrum, strengthening the BL Lac interpretation first proposed by \citet{Bruni18}. The optical and mid-infrared (MIR) emission goes to a higher state in 2018, when the flux in high energies goes down to a lower level. Our {\it RATAN-600m} measurements at 4.8~GHz and 8.2~GHz do not indicate any significant radio flux variation over the monitoring seasons in 2017 and 2018, nor deviate from the archival {\it NVSS} flux level. During GeV flaring times, the spectrum is very hard ($\Gamma_\gamma\sim$1.7) in the GeV band and at times also very hard (($\Gamma_{\rm X}\lesssim2$) in the X-rays, similar to a high-synchrotron-peak (or even an extreme) BL Lac object, making \fermi\ a good target for ground-based {\it Cherenkov telescopes}., Comment: Submitted in Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

33. Peculiar prompt emission and afterglow in H.E.S.S. detected GRB 190829A

Abstract: We present the results of a detailed investigation of the prompt and afterglow emission in the HESS detected GRB 190829A. Swift and Fermi observations of the prompt phase of this GRB reveal two isolated sub-bursts or episodes, separated by a quiescent phase. The energetic and the spectral properties of the first episode are in stark contrast to the second. The first episode, which has a higher spectral peak of $\sim 120\:\text{keV}$ and a low isotropic energy $\sim 10^{50}\:\text{erg}$ is an outlier to the Amati correlation and marginally satisfies the Yonetoku correlation. However, the energetically dominant second episode has lower peak energy and is consistent with the above correlations. We compared this GRB to other low luminosity GRBs (LLGRBs). Prompt emission of LLGRBs also indicates a relativistic shock breakout origin of the radiation. For GRB 190829A, some of the properties of a shock breakout origin are satisfied. However, the absence of an accompanying thermal component and energy above the shock breakout critical limit precludes a shock breakout origin. In the afterglow, an unusual long-lasting late time flare of duration $\sim 10^4\:\text{s}$ is observed. We also analyzed the late-time \fermi-LAT emission that encapsulates the H.E.S.S. detection. Some of the LAT photons are likely to be associated with the source. All the above observational facts suggest GRB 190829A is a peculiar low luminosity GRB that is not powered by a shock breakout, and with an unusual rebrightening due to a patchy emission or a refreshed shock during the afterglow. Furthermore, our results show that TeV energy photons seem common in both high luminosity GRBs and LLGRBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 34. Repeated state change of variable gamma-ray pulsar, PSR J2021+4026

Abstract: PSR J2021+4026 is a radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar and the first pulsar that shows state change of the gamma-ray emission and spin-down rate. The state change of PSR J2021+4026 was first observed at 2011 October, at which the pulsar changes the state from high gamma-ray flux/low spin-down rate state to low gamma-ray flux/high spin-down rate st\ ate. In December 2014, PSR J2021+4026 recovered the state before the 2011 state change over a timescale of a few months. We report that the long term evolution of the gamma-ray flux and timing behavior suggests that PSR J2021+4026 changed the state near 2018 February 1st and entered a new low gamma-ray flux/high spin-down rate state. At the 2018 state change, the averaged flux dropped from $(1.29\pm 0.01)\times 10^{-6} {\rm cts~cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$ to $(1.12\pm 0.01)\times 10^{-6} {\rm cts~cm^{-2}s^{-1\ }}$, which has the similar behavior to the case of 2011 event. The spin-down rate has increased by $\sim 3\%$ in the new state since the 2018 state change. The shapes of pulse profile and spectrum in GeV bands also changed at the 2018 event, and they are consistent with behavior at the 2011 state change. Our results probably suggest that PSR J2021+4026 is switching between different states with a timescale of several years, like some radio pulsars (e.g. PSR~B1828-11). 35. Testing CIBER cosmic infrared background measurements and axionlike particles with observations of TeV blazars

Abstract: The first measurements from the CIBER experiment of extragalactic background light (EBL) in near-infrared (NIR) band exhibit a higher intensity than those inferred through $\gamma$-ray observations. Recent theoretical-EBL intensities are typically consistent with the very high energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray observations. Yet, it is possible that the excess NIR radiation is a new component of EBL and not in tension with the TeV spectra of distant blazars, since the hypothetical axion-like particle (ALP) may lead to a reduced opacity of the Universe for VHE $\gamma$-rays. In order to probe whether the excess component arises mainly from EBL, thirteen observed spectra in high energy and VHE ranges from ten distant TeV BL Lac objects are fitted by four theoretical spectra which involve theoretical EBL (Gilmore ), Gilmore's EBL model including photon/ALP coupling, Gilmore's EBL with CIBER excess and the latter including photon/ALP coupling respectively. We find the goodness of fit for the model with CIBER excess can be improved with a significance of $7.6~\sigma$ after including the photon/ALP coupling; Thus, the ALP/photon mixing mechanism can effectively alleviate the tension; However, the Gilmore EBL model, on the whole, is more compatible with the observed spectra compared to those with ALP, although individual blazars such as PKS 1424+240 and 1ES 1101-232 prefer the ALP-model. Our results suggest that the recent EBL models can solely explain the VHE $\gamma$-ray observations, and assuming the existence of the ALP to alleviate the tension is not required in a statistical sense, thus the excess over the EBL models is less likely to be a new EBL component., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure, Accepted for publication in PRD

Abstract: BackgroundRecent revision significantly changed the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging criteria for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). To quantitatively evaluate resulting changes in patient stage distribution and the associated disease-specific survival (DSS) incorporating diverse populations, we performed a meta-analysis of studies comparing the AJCC 7th edition (AJCC-7) with 8th edition (AJCC-8) staging for DTC.Materials and methodsAfter PROSPERO registration (#CRD42019123657), publications in English reporting DSS of DTC with AJCC-7 and AJCC-8 from inception to June 2019 were identified by search of MEDLINE and PubMed. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to compare differences in survival between AJCC-7 and AJCC-8. Pooled hazard ratios, 10-year DSS, and corresponding interval estimates were calculated for AJCC subgroups. Differences in survival between editions were assessed using subgroup analysis with nonoverlapping confidence intervals indicating statistical significance.ResultsFinal analysis included six studies with 10,850 subjects and median follow-up from 55 to 148 months. Use of AJCC-8 shifted classification to earlier stages: stage I, from 60% to 81%; stage II, from 5% to 13%; stage III, from 21% to 2%; stage IV, from 10% to 3%. Ten-year DSS was significantly lower in AJCC-8 versus AJCC-7 in patients with stage II (88.6%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 82.7-94.6% vs. 98.1%, 95% CI 96.6-99.6%, respectively) and stage III disease (70.5%, 95% CI 59.1-83.9% vs. 96.8%, 95% CI 94.1-99.64%, respectively).ConclusionMeta-analysis of revised AJCC staging for DTC, incorporating diverse populations, demonstrates redistribution of patients toward earlier clinical stages and better stratification of disease-specific mortality risk, specifically among patients now classified with stage II and III disease.Implications for practiceThis study provides updated estimates of disease-specific survival for patients with differentiated thyroid cancer determined by the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system that are generalizable to broader populations and support improved stratification using the recently revised criteria.

Abstract: We report X-ray data analysis results obtained from Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Swift observations of PSR J2032+4127 taken before, during, and after the periastron on 2017 November 13. We found the first clear evidence of a change in the X-ray spectral index over the passage period, thanks to a broad and sensitive spectral coverage by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We analysed the joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation epochs with power-law and broken power-law model. We have obtained change in spectral parameters before and after the periastron passage for both models. The spectra get softened after the passage. 39. MAGICal GRB 190114C: Implications of cutoff in the spectrum at sub-$GeV$ energies

Abstract: GRB 190114C is an unusual gamma-ray burst (GRB) due to its detection at sub-$TeV$ energies by MAGIC, seen at redshift z = 0.42. This burst is one of the brightest GRB detected by \fermi. A joint GBM-LAT analysis of the prompt emission reveals the presence of sub-$GeV$ spectral cutoff when the LAT \emph{low-energy events} (LLE) data is also examined. A similar high-energy cutoff was likewise reported in GRB 160509A and GRB 100724B earlier, as well as handful of other sources. The cutoff can be explained by the intrinsic opacity due to pair production within the emitting region. GRB 190114C shows a transition from non-thermal to a quasi-thermal-like spectrum and a radiation component that can be attributed to afterglow. Based on spectral analysis, we constrain the site of the prompt emission and $Lorentz$ factor. Knowing that sub-$TeV$ photons are detected in MAGIC, we perceive that the observed spectrum is indeed an overlap from two emission sites, where the emission observed in \fermi is more consistent with prompt emission produced via photospheric dissipation along with a concurrent component from the external shock., Comment: Revised and accepted for publication in the ApJ

Abstract: Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. 41. Is the SNR HESS J1731-347 colliding with molecular clouds?

Abstract: The supernova remnant (SNR) HESS J1731-347 is a young SNR which displays a non-thermal X-ray and TeV shell structure. A molecular cloud at a distance of 3.2 kpc is spatially coincident with the western part of the SNR, and it is likely hit by the SNR. The X-ray emission from this part of the shell is much lower than from the rest of the SNR. Moreover, a compact GeV emission region coincident with the cloud has been detected with a soft spectrum. These observations seem to imply a shock-cloud collision scenario at this area, where the stalled shock can no longer accelerate super-TeV electrons or maintain strong magnetic turbulence downstream, while the GeV cosmic rays (CRs) are released through this stalled shock. To test this hypothesis, we have performed a detailed Fermi-LAT reanalysis of the HESS J1731-347 region with over 9 years of data. We find that the compact GeV emission region displays a spectral power-law index of -2.4, whereas the GeV emission from the rest of the SNR (excluding the cloud region) has an index of -1.8. A hadronic model involving a shock-cloud collision scenario is built to explain the -ray emission from this area. It consists of three CR sources: run-away super-TeV CRs that have escaped from the fast shock, leaked GeV CRs from the stalled shock, and the local CR sea. The X-ray and -ray emission of the SNR excluding the shock-cloud interaction region is explained in a one-zone leptonic model. Our shock-cloud collision model explains well the GeV-TeV observations from both cloud regions around HESS J1731-347, i.e. from the cloud in contact with the SNR and from the more distant cloud which is coincident with the nearby TeV source HESS J1729-345. We find however that the leaked GeV CRs from the shock-cloud collision do not necessarily dominate the GeV emission from the clouds, due to a comparable contribution from the local CR sea., Comment: 20 pages

Abstract: Much research effort has been devoted to developing methods for reconstructing the links of a network from dynamics of its nodes. Many current methods require the measurements of the dynamics of all the nodes be known. In real-world problems, it is common that either some nodes of a network of interest are unknown or the measurements of some nodes are unavailable. These nodes, either unknown or whose measurements are unavailable, are called hidden nodes. In this paper, we derive analytical results that explain the effects of hidden nodes on the reconstruction of bidirectional networks. These theoretical results and their implications are verified by numerical studies.

Abstract: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by the progressive loss of motor neurons. While several pathogenic mutations have been identified, the vast majority of ALS cases have no family history of disease. Thus, for most ALS cases, the disease may be a product of multiple pathways contributing to varying degrees in each patient. Using machine learning algorithms, we stratify the transcriptomes of 148 ALS postmortem cortex samples into three distinct molecular subtypes. The largest cluster, identified in 61% of patient samples, displays hallmarks of oxidative and proteotoxic stress. Another 19% of the samples shows predominant signatures of glial activation. Finally, a third group (20%) exhibits high levels of retrotransposon expression and signatures of TARDBP/TDP-43 dysfunction. We further demonstrate that TDP-43 (1) directly binds a subset of retrotransposon transcripts and contributes to their silencing in vitro, and (2) pathological TDP-43 aggregation correlates with retrotransposon de-silencing in vivo.

46. On the orbital properties of millisecond pulsar binaries

Abstract: We report a detailed analysis of the orbital properties of binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) with a white dwarf (WD) companion. Positive correlations between the orbital period $P_{\rm b}$ and eccentricity $\epsilon$ are found in two classes of MSP binaries with a He WD and with a CO/ONeMg WD, though their trends are different. The distribution of $P_{\rm b}$ is not uniform. Deficiency of sources at $P_{\rm b}\sim35-50$~days (Gap 1) have been mentioned in previous studies. On the other hand, another gap at $P_{\rm b}\sim2.5-4.5$~days (Gap 2) is identified for the first time. Inspection of the relation between $P_{\rm b}$ and the companion masses $M_{\rm c}$ revealed the subpopulations of MSP binaries with a He WD separated by Gap 1, above which $P_{\rm b}$ is independent of $M_{\rm c}$ (horizontal branch) but below which $P_{\rm b}$ correlates strongly with $M_{\rm c}$ (lower branch). Distinctive horizontal branch and lower branch separated by Gap 2 were identified for the MSP binaries with a CO/ONeMg WD at shorter $P_{\rm b}$ and higher $M_{\rm c}$. Generally, $M_{\rm c}$ are higher in the horizontal branch than in the lower branch for the MSP binaries with a He WD. 47. X-ray Census of Millisecond Pulsars in the Galactic field

Abstract: We have conducted a systematic survey for the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Currently, there are 47 MSPs with confirmed X-ray detections. We have also placed the upper limits for the X-ray emission from the other 36 MSPs by using the archival data. We have normalized their X-ray luminosities $L_{x}$ and their effective photon indices $\Gamma$ into a homogeneous data set, which enable us to carry out a detailed statistical analysis. Based on our censored sample, we report a relation of $L_{x}\simeq10^{31.05}\left(\dot{E}/10^{35}\right)^{1.31}$ erg/s (2-10 keV) for the MSPs. The inferred X-ray conversion efficiency is found to be lower than previously reported estimate that could be affected by selection bias. $L_{x}$ also correlates/anti-correlates with the magnetic field strength at the light cylinder $B_{LC}$/characteristic age $\tau$. On the other hand, there is no correlation between $L_{x}$ and their surface magnetic field strength $B_{s}$. We have further divided the sample into four classes: (i) black-widows, (ii) redbacks, (iii) isolated MSPs and (iv) other MSP binaries, and compare the properties among them. We noted that while the rotational parameters and the orbital periods of redbacks and black-widow are similar, $L_{x}$ of redbacks are significantly higher than those of black-widows in the 2-10 keV band. Also the $\Gamma$ of redbacks are apparently smaller than those of black-widows, which indicates the X-ray emission of redbacks are harder than that of black-widows. 48. Broadband High-Energy Emissions of the Redback Millisecond Pulsar PSR J2129-0429

Abstract: We present the first results from a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation of the gamma-ray emitting millisecond pulsar compact binary PSR J2129-0429. X-ray emission up to about 40 keV is detected and the joint spectrum can be modeled with a power-law plus a neutron star atmosphere model. At a distance of 1.4 kpc, the 0.3-79 keV luminosity is $3.56\times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We also detected the 0.64-day binary orbital period with a double-peaked structure across the wavebands. By combining the updated Fermi GeV data, we modeled the broadband spectral energy distribution as well as the X-ray modulation with an intrabinary model involving shock interaction between pulsar wind and outflow from the companion star. Lastly, we reported a high-resolution X-ray image provided by Chandra to rule out the proposed pulsar wind nebula associated with PSR J2129-0429., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

49. Leaked GeV CRs from a broken shell: Explaining 9 years Fermi-LAT data of SNR W28

Abstract: Supernova remnant (SNR)\,W28 is well known for its classic hadronic scenario, in which the TeV cosmic rays (CRs) released at the early stage of this mid-aged SNR are illuminating nearby molecular clouds (MCs). Overwhelming evidences have shown that the northeast of the SNR (W28-North) has already encountered with the MC clumps. Through this broken shell -- W28-North, we believe the CRs with energy down to $<$1\,GeV to be able to be injected into nearby MCs. To further testify this hadronic scenario, we first analyse the 9 years Fermi-LAT data in/around W28 with energy down to 0.3\,GeV. Our Fermi-LAT analysis display a 10-200 GeV skymap which spatially matches well with the known TeV sources -- HESS\,J1801-233 (W28-North), HESS\,J1800-240\,A,\,B\,\&\,C (240\,A\,B\,\&\,C). At low energy band, we has discovered a 0.5-1\,GeV blob located to the south of 240\,B\,\&\,C, and a low flux of 0.3-1\,GeV at 240\,A. A hadronic model is build to explain our analysis results and previous multi-wavelength observations of W28. Our model consists of three CR sources: The run-away CRs escaped from a strong shock; The leaked GeV CRs from the broken shell -- W28-North; And the local CR sea. Through modelling the SNR evolution, CR acceleration\,\&\,releasing, we have explained the GeV-TeV emission in/around SNR\,W28 (except for 240\,A) in one model. Both the damping of the magnetic waves by the neutrals and the decreased acceleration efficiency are taken into account in our model due to the mid-age of SNR W28., Comment: This paper has 25 pages, 9 figures and 5 tables

50. The X-ray modulation of PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213 during the Periastron Passage in 2017

Abstract: We present the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the gamma-ray binary PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213, of which the periastron passage has just occurred in November 2017. In the Swift X-ray light curve, the flux was steadily increasing before mid-October 2017, however, a sharp X-ray dip on a weekly time-scale is seen during the periastron passage, followed by a post-periastron X-ray flare lasting for ~20 days. We suggest that the X-ray dip is caused by (i) an increase of the magnetization parameter at the shock, and (ii) the suppression due to the Doppler boosting effect. The 20-day post-periastron flare could be a consequence of the Be stellar disk passage by the pulsar. An orbital GeV modulation is also expected in our model, however, no significant variability is seen in the Fermi-LAT light curve. We suspect that the GeV emission resulted from the interaction between the binary's members is hidden behind the bright magnetospheric emission of the pulsar. Pulsar gating technique would be useful to remove the magnetospheric emission and recover the predicted GeV modulation, if an accurate radio timing solution over the periastron passage is provided in the future., Comment: 6 pages, including 2 figures.
