The U.S. colleges and universities offering non-sectarian educational programs in Jewish Studies rely on the support of their academic libraries for research materials and library services. For college libraries which use Library of Congress Classification scheme, it is a common practice to integrate "studies" resources into their general library collections. Since Jewish Studies sources span a vast number of subjects within all major disciplines, shelving integration leads to the dispersion of all relevant sources and such dispersion in turn leads to a variety of problems for library professionals and library users. For collection development librarians the problems range from lack of information about collection's size, strengths or weaknesses, and for library users interested in browsing the collection, dispersion of subjects creates a major roadblock. This practical guide aims at providing a solution to such problems. By identifying all relevant Library of Congress call numbers and the corresponding Library of Congress subject headings, the guide offers a simplified access to Jewish Studies sources in general library collections. It is arranged by four major discipline: Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and General Works & Bibliographies. Within each discipline, specific LC call number ranges and corresponding subjects are listed. The subjects are further subdivided and precisely identified. The guide will assist collection development librarians, library liaisons, grants and fundraising professionals and especially the Jewish Studies faculty and students, in identifying and locating relevant sources.

This citation analysis of the use of public and business administration literature in the field of library science examined library science monographs and the last four years (1990-93) of "Journal of Library Administration." The monographs were published between 1980 and 1992 and were selected on the basis of a favorable review in the library literature or frequent citation in library sources. Also selected for inclusion were library science monographs which addressed at least one of the following functional elements of management: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, or budgeting. In total, 7,049 citations were analyzed. A general statistical analysis of the total citations showed that overall, 3,853 (55%) of sources cited were those in business and public administration as compared to 3,248 (45%) of library science sources. This figure is even higher (61%) if citations in "Journal of Library Administration" are examined separately. One table presents data on the use of library science versus business and public administration literature as cited in monographs; the data indicate the three areas which draw most on non-library science literature are planning, coordinating, and directing. The survey described in this report was designed to test whether or not library directors are able to recognize the existence of the problem of burnout (the emotional and physical exhaustion due to continued stress on the job) and how, if at all, top management of the institutions of which the library is a part view and deal with the issue. Survey data were gathered by means of a one-page questionnaire mailed to the heads of 90 libraries in New York State that were selected on the basis of their being part of larger institutions; 40 replies were received. The survey's main finding was that 65% of the library directors perceived burnout among their professional staff. In addition, stress and frustration were most frequently selected as very important warning signs of burnout; and the administrative techniques ranked as very important in dealing with burnout were: (1) to provide realistic job expectations, and (2) to establish clear lines of communication. It is concluded that burnout definitely exists among library professional staff and that the majority of administrators are in need of, or would find useful, some central program sponsored by their organization to address the issues related to job burnout among their employees.
