Abstract

Marine spatial planning that addresses ocean climate-driven change ('climate-smart MSP') is a global aspiration to support economic growth, food security and ecosystem sustainability. Ocean climate change ('CC') modelling may become a key decision-support tool for MSP, but traditional modelling analysis and communication challenges prevent their broad uptake. We employed MSP-specific ocean climate modelling analyses to inform a real-life MSP process; addressing how nature conservation and fisheries could be adapted to CC. We found that the currently planned distribution of these activities may become unsustainable during the policy's implementation due to CC, leading to a shortfall in its sustainability and blue growth targets. Significant, climate-driven ecosystem-level shifts in ocean components underpinning designated sites and fishing activity were estimated, reflecting different magnitudes of shifts in benthic versus pelagic, and inshore versus offshore habitats. Supporting adaptation, we then identified: CC refugia (areas where the ecosystem remains within the boundaries of its present state); CC hotspots (where climate drives the ecosystem towards a new state, inconsistent with each sectors' present use distribution); and for the first time, identified bright spots (areas where oceanographic processes drive range expansion opportunities that may support sustainable growth in the medium term). We thus create the means to: identify where sector-relevant ecosystem change is attributable to CC; incorporate resilient delivery of conservation and sustainable ecosystem management aims into MSP; and to harness opportunities for blue growth where they exist. Capturing CC bright spots alongside refugia within protected areas may present important opportunities to meet sustainability targets while helping support the fishing sector in a changing climate. By capitalizing on the natural distribution of climate resilience within ocean ecosystems, such climate-adaptive spatial management strategies could be seen as nature-based solutions to limit the impact of CC on ocean ecosystems and dependent blue economy sectors, paving the way for climate-smart MSP.

Abstract

Legionellosis is an infection acquired through inhalation of aerosolized water droplets containing Legionella bacteria. In August 2018, public health officials in New Hampshire launched an investigation into a legionellosis outbreak. They identified 49 illnesses likely associated with the outbreak and implicated an improperly maintained hot tub at a hotel. The same strain of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 was found in both the hot tub and in samples from two patients with Legionnaires' disease. The indoor hot tub vented to the outdoors, which is how some patients with confirmed legionellosis likely acquired the infection despite not entering the hotel during the incubation period. This outbreak is notable for 1) likely illness acquisition through the exterior vent of the hot tub room and 2) use of whole genome sequencing to link environmental and patient specimens. Abstract

Jesus' invitation to rest in Matthew 11:28-30 is part of the evangelist's special material, inserted between the pronouncement that only the Son fully knows the Father and possesses the unique prerogative to reveal him (11:25-27) and the only two sabbath stories in this Gospel (12:1-14). This dissertation explores the significance of such a juxtaposition. Since the use of the Jewish Scriptures is pervasive in Matthew’s Gospel, the dissertation studies the use of the evangelist’s term for rest (a0na/pausiv) throughout the LXX. As a result of this analysis, it proposes that there are three main potential backgrounds for the concept of rest in this two-fold pericope and these can be summarized under the categories of "sabbath rest", "peaceful inheritance" and "wisdom's repose." These categories then provide the resources for a fresh evaluation of the significance of Jesus' offer of rest in its Matthean narrative context. In addition, the examination of Matthew’s theology of rest and Sabbath in 11:25-12:14 in light of the major themes of law, eschatology and Christology in this Gospel suggests that Matthew’s approach to interpreting Sabbath law and his eschatological perspective are primarily based on his beliefs about Jesus. Jesus is the Mosaic-Davidic eschatological agent prophesied in the Jewish Scriptures and through him has been inaugurated a new era of Christ-centered law interpretation along with a present realization of the eschatological expectations of the sabbath rest of the messianic age that is to be consummated at his parousia. This Christological conviction has placed the Matthean community at odds with the leaders of its own religious society, who have rejected its belief about the identity and mission of Jesus, including its proposal that the sabbath commandment’s rest from now on points to the eschatological reality of rest that is centered in Jesus.

Commissioned via UK Research and Innovation Official Development Assistance National Capability funded project ‘Addressing Challenges of Coastal Communities through Ocean Research for Developing Economies’ (ACCORD), and co developed with the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment with the support of PEMSEA, our main ambition was to highlight what spatial management activities could be undertaken in the waters off the city to support climate change adaptation in its resources. We identified substantial sensitivities of species of commercial and conservation value across the whole bay and its offshore waters to climate change under increasing global greenhouse emissions. For species that occupy the water column (as opposed to the seabed), this sensitivity appeared to be concentrated in the southern part of the bay. Importantly, fishing pressure exacerbated the pressure of climate change on pelagic target species, highlighting the challenges of delivering food security and a growing blue economy imposed by a changing climate. Additionally, lowered emissions, in line with the Paris Agreement, would deliver clear benefits to all types of species assessed, supporting a more sustainable path for the exploration of Da Nang’s marine resources and it’s blue economy. Recommendations are made about how the Coastal Use Zoning Plan for Da Nang City could be adapted to support climate change adaptation in these species and habitats, as well as the broader sustainability of these ecosystems.

32. Russia/Soviet Union: A Guide to Print Materials for Teachers.

Abstract

Intended to provide middle school and high school teachers and others interested in Russia and the Soviet Union with a guide to printed materials, this booklet is divided into several sections. The first section, comprising the bulk of the publication, is devoted to reviews of 69 books that were written for classroom use or appear as if they might be particularly interesting to students in grades 6-12. Each book has been reviewed by two people: a university-based expert evaluating balance and accuracy and a classroom teacher focusing on accessibility and possible uses in the classroom. For each entry, author, title, pages, identifying numbers, physical description, price, grade level, subject, summary, and comments by both a Russia/USSR specialist and a teacher/learner specialists are provided. Additional sections list over 200 background readings, teacher and student projects, reference books, Russian and Soviet Literature, and maps and atlases. A section describing additional information sources lists university Russian and East European centers, special interest groups, distributors of Soviet materials, distributors of Soviet films, and travel agencies. Abstract

This supplement updates the 1985 "Russia/Soviet Union: A Guide to Print Materials for Teachers," a guide to literature for middle and high school teachers. Each entry includes author, title, pages, a physical description, identifying numbers, imprint, price, and a brief evaluative summary. Section 1, "Reference Books," contains six items of a general reference nature. Section 2, "Photographic Images," has eight books of collected photographs on various aspects of Soviet/Russian life, culture, and history. Section 3, "Background reading for teachers and student projects," includes 22 items on topics ranging from a comparison of slavery in the United States with Russian serfdom to a collection of Soviet political posters from 1917 through 1980. Section 4, "Books written for classroom use," contains 19 items, several of which are written for the middle school grades, on a variety of topics, including Mikhail Gorbachev, the tsars, and Sakharov. Section 5, "Units for classroom," includes five units, each with a brief evaluation of the unit's contents and its strengths or weaknesses. Section 6, "Additional information," lists seven special interest groups concerned with the Soviet Union, two film/video distributors and rental libraries, and three travel groups specializing in travel in the Soviet Union. Abstract

BackgroundAdolescent mental health is characterized by relatively high rates of psychiatric disorders and low levels of help-seeking behaviors. Existing mental health programs aimed at addressing these issues in adolescents have repeated inconsistent results. Such programs have generally been based on techniques derived from cognitive behavioral therapy, which may not be ideally suited to early intervention among adolescent samples. Positive psychology, which seeks to improve well-being rather than alleviate psychological symptoms, offers an alternative approach. A previous community study of adolescents found that informal engagement in an online positive psychology program for up to 6 weeks yielded significant improvements in both well-being and depression symptoms. However, this approach had not been trialed among adolescents in a structured format and within a school setting. ObjectiveThis study examines the feasibility of an online school-based positive psychology program delivered in a structured format over a 6-week period utilizing a workbook to guide students through website content and interactive exercises. MethodsStudents from four high schools were randomly allocated by classroom to either the positive psychology condition, "Bite Back", or the control condition. The Bite Back condition consisted of positive psychology exercises and information, while the control condition used a series of non-psychology entertainment websites. Both interventions were delivered online for 6 hours over a period of 4-6 weeks during class time. Symptom measures and measures of well-being/flourishing and life satisfaction were administered at baseline and post intervention. ResultsData were analyzed using multilevel linear modeling. Both conditions demonstrated reductions in depression, stress, and total symptom scores without any significant differences between the two conditions. Both the Bite Back and control conditions also demonstrated significant improvements in life satisfaction scores post intervention. However, only the control condition demonstrated significant increases in flourishing scores post intervention. ConclusionsResults suggest that a structured online positive psychology program administered within the school curriculum was not effective when compared to the control condition. The limitations of online program delivery in school settings including logistic considerations are also relevant to the contradictory findings of this study. 45. Specificity of the Tuberculin Skin Test and the T-SPOT.'TB' Assay among Students in a Low-Tuberculosis Incidence Setting

Abstract

Objective: Interferon-[gamma] release assays (IGRAs) are an important tool for detecting latent "Mycobacterium tuberculosis" infection (LTBI). Insufficient data exist about IGRA specificity in college health centers, most of which screen students for LTBI using the tuberculin skin test (TST). Participants: Students at a low-TB incidence college health center. Methods: TST and T-SPOT."TB" were performed on prospectively recruited students. TB exposure risk was assessed using a questionnaire: Those at low risk were assumed to not have LTBI in order to calculate test specificity. Results: Of 184 students enrolled, 143 had results available for both TST and T-SPOT."TB". Agreement of the tests was 97% (kappa statistic 0.717; 95% confidence interval, 0.399-1.00). Among 124 low-risk students, specificity for TST and T-SPOT."TB" were 98.4% and 100%, respectively. Conclusions: T-SPOT."TB" specificity was high among low-risk students. Additional studies such as cost-effectiveness analyses using T-SPOT."TB" as a single or confirmatory test to TST are needed to contribute to LTBI screening policy decisions. (Contains 1 table.)

AbstractObjective2022 - 2023 mpox outbreak necessitated rapid distribution of JYNNEOS vaccines from US Strategic National Stockpile to state and local public health agencies. New Hampshire’s centralized public health structure required partnering with healthcare facilities to reach at-risk persons. Among the 67 organizations contacted to partner with, only 7 established public JYNNEOS vaccine clinics. The study objective was to identify barriers and resources needed for emergency public vaccination.MethodsIn March 2023, mixed-method surveys were developed and sent to 20 non-participating organizations and 7 participating organizations (“vaccine-partners”).Results35% (7/20) of non-participating organizations and 100% (7/7) vaccine-partners responded. Non-participating organizations (n = 5) identified lack of staffing (100%) and insufficient provider time or clinical resources (80%) as the most common barriers. Staffing needs reported by non-participating organizations included: administrative (100%); medical doctor or advanced practice practitioner (67%); and registered nurse, medical assistant, or licensed nursing assistant (67%). Vaccine partners reported similar staffing requirements. Estimated additional monthly funding needs were $3,750 for non-participating organizations and $1,680 for vaccine-partners.ConclusionsA minority of NH healthcare facilities established public JYNNEOS vaccination clinics. The primary barrier was insufficient staffing; additional resources and funding needs were modest. Success of the next emergency vaccination campaign depends on sustained advocacy, resources, and partnership.
