25. Criterion for the Prevention of Core Fracture During Extrusion of Bimetal Rods

Abstract

Based on the upper-bound theorem in limit analysis, a theoretical model for core fracture in bimetal rods during extrusion has been developed and a fracture criterion established. The variables affecting core fracture are: reduction in area (r%), die geometry, friction (m), relative size of the core and relative strength of the core. Within the wide range of possible combinations of these process variables, only a small range permits extrusion without fracture. With suitable modifications the present analysis can be extended to develop criteria for sleeve fracture during extrusion and for both core and sleeve fracture during drawing.

26. Analysis of Strip Rolling by the Upper Bound Approach

Abstract

The process of strip rolling is analyzed using the upper bound technique. Two triangular velocity fields, one with triangles in linear rigid body motion and the other with triangles in rotational rigid body motion, are developed. The total power is determined as a function of the four independent process parameters (relative thickness, reduction, friction and net front-back tension). The results of these two velocity fields are compared with the established solution from Avitzur’s velocity field of continuous deformation. Upon establishing the validity of the triangular velocity field as an approach to the strip rolling problem, recommendations are suggested on how this approach can be used to study the split end or alligatoring defect.

Abstract

In conjunction with the previous analysis on core fracture [1, 2], a criterion for prevention of sleeve fracture in extrusion of bimetal rods is developed. The sleeve fracture is likewise affected by a set of independent process parameters, namely the reduction in area, die angle, friction, interfacial bonding, relative size, and relative strength of the sleeve. It is shown that the usage of the present criterion for sleeve fracture and the criterion previously described for core fracture can provide an effective path to a successful extrusion operation for bimetal rods and wires.

Abstract

A criterion for the prevention of core fracture during drawing of bimetal wire is proposed. In order to account for the contrary effect of friction between codrawing and coextrusion on the occurrence of core fracture, a model is considered which assumes a deformation geometry slightly different from that used in the development of the criterion for core fracture during coextrusion [1]. Comparison between the two criteria for codrawing and coextrusion is presented. The effects of independent process parameters on the incidence of core fracture are summarized and discussed.

Abstract

The use of methylchlorosilanes as an agent to produce water-repellent characteristics in cotton fabrics was patented by W.I. Patnode of the General Electric Company. Since very little information has been published on the process, this investigation was undertaken to determine the optimum conditions for treating cotton fabric. Experimental tests were made using 10 inch square samples of three different poplin type cotton fabrics dried to constant weight in a vacuum dryer and over P₂O₅ in a desiccator. Each cotton sample was treated with one of five different organo chlorosilanes or a mixture of methyltrichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane. The time of contact between the fabric and silane was established at 60 seconds by a number of preliminary tests. Room temperature of approximately 30°C and pressure of approximately 710 mm were arbitrarily chosen for the reaction. The tests were made with the fabric in a three liter distilling apparatus and the required amount of silane for the volume concentration desired was vaporized and transported into the reactor by a difference in pressure of the vaporizer and reaction vessel. Fabric samples were supported in the reactor over a glass distributor ring which disbursed the silane. Volume concentrations of silanes of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 percent were used in the investigation. Neutralization of end products was attempted with a 10 minute dried-air wash, 13-16 percent volume concentration of ammonia and five percent solution of sodium acetate. Data on results of tests on end products indicated the following conclusions: 1. Neutralization of end products is necessary to prevent deterioration of the fabric, as indicated by a maximum reduction in tensile strength of 80 percent as compared to an untreated sample. 2. The 60 second time of silane-fabric contact is sufficient to produce a water-repellent fabric. 3. Fabrics treated with a one percent volume concentration of mixtures of methyltrichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane show a spray test rating of 90 as compared to a rating of 70-80 for fabrics treated with individual silanes. 4. Standard methods of testing treated fabrics do not indicate the hygienic properties of the treated fabrics. Master of Science

Abstract

All of the graduate students in the School of Nursing take some of their Master of Science courses online. A group of six School of Nursing faculty members and a graduate student received funding to determine best practices in online courses. The group developed an evaluation rubric to measure quality in the graduate online curriculum. They then applied the rubric to the core courses which are primarily offered online and are required for all graduate nursing students. The project had a positive impact on faculty by offering a tool useful for online course evaluation and development. Abstract

Uncertainty quantification in machine learning can provide powerful insight into a model's capabilities and enhance human trust in opaque models. Well-calibrated uncertainty quantification reveals a connection between high uncertainty and an increased likelihood of an incorrect classification. We hypothesize that if we are able to explain the model's uncertainty by generating rules that define subgroups of data with high and low levels of classification uncertainty, then those same rules will identify subgroups of data on which the model performs well and subgroups on which the model does not perform well. If true, then the utility of uncertainty quantification is not limited to understanding the certainty of individual predictions; it can also be used to provide a more global understanding of the model's understanding of patient subpopulations. We evaluate our proposed technique and hypotheses on deep neural networks and tree-based gradient boosting ensemble across benchmark and real-world medical datasets., (©2023 AMIA - All rights reserved.)

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to determine if purposeful presimulation interruption management training impacts cognitive load and successful completion of simulation objectives more than the experience alone., Background: Practicing nurses are frequently interrupted, increasing the risk for error and task time. Novices are particularly vulnerable to interruption consequences., Method: A between-subjects design and block randomization of prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students ( n = 146) was used to compare group differences in cognitive load, use of interruption management strategies, and completion of simulation required elements. Potential relationships between outcomes and age, mindfulness, and experience were explored., Results: An analysis of covariance demonstrated significantly lower perceived mental demand for those receiving training. Older learners and those receiving training implemented more interruption management strategies., Conclusion: Combining simulation-based education (SBE) with purposeful training enhances interruption management more than SBE alone.
