Search

Studying small near-Earth asteroids is important to understand their dynamical histories and origins as well as to mitigate the damage of the asteroid impact to the Earth. We report the results of multicolor photometry of the tiny near-Earth asteroid 2015 RN$_{35}$ using the 3.8 m Seimei telescope in Japan and the TRAPPIST-South telescope in Chile over 17 nights in 2022 December and 2023 January. We observed 2015 RN$_{35}$ across a wide range of phase angles from 2$^{\circ}$ to 30$^{\circ}$ in the $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$ bands in the Pan-STARRS system. These lightcurves show that 2015 RN$_{35}$ is in a non-principal axis spin state with two characteristic periods of $1149.7\pm0.3$ s and $896.01\pm0.01$ s. We found that a slope of a visible spectrum of 2015 RN$_{35}$ is as red as asteroid (269) Justitia, one of the very red objects in the main belt, which indicates that 2015 RN$_{35}$ can be classified as an A- or Z-type asteroid. In conjunction with the shallow slope of the phase curve, we suppose that 2015 RN$_{35}$ is a high-albedo A-type asteroid. We demonstrated that surface properties of tiny asteroids could be well constrained by intensive observations across a wide range of phase angles. 2015 RN$_{35}$ is a possible mission accessible A-type near-Earth asteroid with a small $\Delta v$ of 11.801 km s$^{-1}$ in the launch window between 2030 and 2035., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. Asteroid systems such as binaries and pairs are indicative of physical properties and dynamical histories of the Small Solar System Bodies. Although numerous observational and theoretical studies have been carried out, the formation mechanism of asteroid pairs is still unclear, especially for near-Earth asteroid (NEA) pairs. We conducted a series of optical photometric and polarimetric observations of a small NEA 2010 XC$_{15}$ in 2022 December to investigate its surface properties. The rotation period of 2010 XC$_{15}$ is possibly a few to several dozen hours and color indices of 2010 XC$_{15}$ are derived as $g-r=0.435\pm0.008$, $r-i=0.158\pm0.017$, and $r-z=0.186\pm0.009$ in the Pan-STARRS system. The linear polarization degrees of 2010 XC$_{15}$ are a few percent at the phase angle range of 58$^{\circ}$ to 114$^{\circ}$. We found that 2010 XC$_{15}$ is a rare E-type NEA on the basis of its photometric and polarimetric properties. Taking the similarity of not only physical properties but also dynamical integrals and the rarity of E-type NEAs into account, we suppose that 2010 XC$_{15}$ and 1998 WT$_{24}$ are of common origin (i.e., asteroid pair). These two NEAs are the sixth NEA pair and first E-type NEA pair ever confirmed, possibly formed by rotational fission. Accurate estimation of brightness of (3200) Phaethon up to lower phase angles are essential for planning of the on-board camera of the DESTINY$^{+}$ mission. We have carried out intensive observations of Phaethon in the optical wavelength ($g$, $r$, and $i$) with the TriCCS camera on the Seimei 3.8 m telescope in October and November, 2021. We derived the absolute magnitude $H_\mathrm{V}$ and the slope parameter $G$ of Phaethon as $H_\mathrm{V}=14.23\pm0.02$ and $G=0.040\pm0.008$ from multiple photometric observations including lower phase angles down to $\sim$9$^{\circ}$ with the $H$-$G$ model. Using the $H_\mathrm{V}$ value and the geometric albedo of Phaethon derived in previous polarimetric studies, we estimated that the Phaethon's diameter is within a range of 5.22 to 6.74 km, which is consistent with radar and occultation observations. With the linear model, we derived $H_\mathrm{V}=14.65\pm0.02$, which corresponds to a diameter range of 4.30 to 5.56 km. Our simultaneous tricolor lightcurves of Phaethon indicate that no rotational spectral variations larger than 0.018 and 0.020 mag in the g-r and r-i colors, possibly related to inhomogeneity of the surface material and/or structure, are seen at the 2021 apparition., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ, comments are welcome

We report the results of video observations of tiny (diameter less than 100 m) near-Earth objects (NEOs) with Tomo-e Gozen on the Kiso 105 cm Schmidt telescope. A rotational period of a tiny asteroid reflects its dynamical history and physical properties since smaller objects are sensitive to the YORP effect. We carried out video observations of 60 tiny NEOs at 2 fps from 2018 to 2021 and successfully derived the rotational periods and axial ratios of 32 NEOs including 13 fast rotators with rotational periods less than 60 s. The fastest rotator found during our survey is 2020 HS7 with a rotational period of 2.99 s. We statistically confirmed that there is a certain number of tiny fast rotators in the NEO population, which have been missed with any previous surveys. We have discovered that the distribution of the tiny NEOs in a diameter and rotational period (D-P) diagram is truncated around a period of 10 s. The truncation with a flat-top shape is not explained well either by a realistic tensile strength of NEOs or suppression of YORP by meteoroid impacts. We report a one-second-cadence wide-field survey for M-dwarf flares using the Tomo-e Gozen camera mounted on the Kiso Schmidt telescope. We detect 22 flares from M3-M5 dwarfs with rise times and amplitudes ranging from $5\, \mathrm{sec} \lesssim t_\mathrm{rise} \lesssim 100\,\mathrm{sec}$ and $0.5 \lesssim \Delta F/F_{\star} \lesssim 20$, respectively. The flare light curves mostly show steeper rises and shallower decays than those obtained from the Kepler one-minute cadence data and tend to have flat peak structures. Assuming a blackbody spectrum with temperatures of $9,000-15,000\,\mathrm{K}$, the peak luminosities and bolometric energies are estimated to be $10^{29}\,\mathrm{erg\,sec^{-1}} \lesssim L_\mathrm{peak} \lesssim 10^{31}\,\mathrm{erg\,sec^{-1}}$ and $10^{31}\,\mathrm{erg} \lesssim E_{\rm bol} \lesssim 10^{34}\,\mathrm{erg}$, which constitutes the bright end of fast optical flares for M dwarfs. We confirm that more than 90\% of the host stars of the detected flares are magnetically active based on their H$\alpha$ emission line intensities obtained by LAMOST. The estimated occurrence rate of the detected flares is $\sim 0.7$ per day per an active star, indicating they are common in magnetically active M dwarfs. We argue that the flare light curves can be explained by the chromospheric compression model; the rise time is broadly consistent with the Alfv\'en transit time of a magnetic loop with a length scale of $l_\mathrm{loop} \sim 10^4\,\mathrm{km}$ and a field strength of $1,000\,\mathrm{G}$, while the decay time is likely determined by the radiative cooling of the compressed chromosphere down to near the photosphere with a temperature of $\gtrsim 10,000\,\mathrm{K}$. Photometric monitoring by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered not only periodic signals by transiting exoplanets but also episodic or quasi-periodic dimming around young stellar objects. The mechanisms of the dimming of these objects, so-called "dippers", are thought to be related to the property of the accretion or the structure of protoplanetary disks especially in regions close to the host star. Recently, we have created the catalog of dippers from the one year of TESS Full Frame Image (FFI) data. In this paper, we report spectral features of four newly found dippers in that catalog and show that they potentially shed light on the dimming mechanisms. We found that all of the targets exhibit the H alpha emission line, which is an indicator of an ongoing accretion. Based on its line profiles and/or their variability, we characterized the properties of the disks of each source, which can support the dimming mechanisms due to a dusty disk wind or an accretion warp. Also, we found an interesting dipper (TIC 317873721), "close-in binary dipper," showing the complex variability of the line profile and the large radial velocity variation. Since the dimming intervals are similar to the orbital period of the binary, we suggest that the dips are caused by dust in the warp of accretion from a circumbinary disk onto stars. Such a close-in ($<$ 0.1 au) binary dipper is rarely reported so far, further investigation will reveal the new aspect of the disk evolution and planetary formation., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

Dust and gas in protoplanetary disks dissipate as central stars evolve. In order to estimate the dust dissipation timescales in the protoplanetary disks, we stacked the WISE 12, 22, and the AKARI 90 $\mu$m survey images of known T Tauri stars and derived the average fluxes, well below the survey flux limit in the 90 $\mu$m band. We classified 4,783 T Tauri stars into three age groups, which are young ($<$2 Myr), mid-age (2-6 Myr), and old ($>$6 Myr) groups, and stacked the WISE 12 and 22 and the AKARI 90 $\mu$m images in each group. The photometry of the stacked image shows the flux decay timescales of 1.4$\pm$0.2, 1.38$\pm$0.05, and 1.4$^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ Myr in the 12, 22, and 90 $\mu$m bands, respectively. In optically thin disks with one-solar luminosity central stars, the 12 and 22 $\mu$m fluxes are attributed to the emission from the intermediate ($\sim$ 1 au) region and the 90 $\mu$m flux corresponds to that from the outer ($\sim$ 10 au) region in the disk. We hence conclude the dust dissipation timescale is $\tau_{\rm med,dust}\sim$1.4 Myr in the intermediate disks and is $\tau_{\rm outer, dust}=$1.4$^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ Myr in the outer disks. The dust-dissipation time difference between the outer and intermediate disks is $\Delta\tau_{\rm dust} = \tau_{\rm outer,dust} -\tau_{\rm med,dust}=0.0^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ Myr, indicating that the dust in the intermediate and outer disks dissipates on almost the same timescale., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The paper presents the third data release of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), a wide-field multi-band imaging survey with the Subaru 8.2m telescope. HSC-SSP has three survey layers (Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep) with different area coverages and depths, designed to address a wide array of astrophysical questions. This third release from HSC-SSP includes data from 278 nights of observing time and covers about 670 square degrees in all five broad-band filters at the full depth ($\sim26$~mag at $5\sigma$) in the Wide layer. If we include partially observed area, the release covers 1,470 square degrees. The Deep and UltraDeep layers have $\sim80\%$ of the originally planned integration times, and are considered done, as we have slightly changed the observing strategy in order to compensate for various time losses. There are a number of updates in the image processing pipeline. Of particular importance is the change in the sky subtraction algorithm; we subtract the sky on small scales before the detection and measurement stages, which has significantly reduced false detections. Thanks to this and other updates, the overall quality of the processed data has improved since the previous release. However, there are limitations in the data (for example, the pipeline is not optimized for crowded fields), and we encourage the user to check the quality assurance plots as well as a list of known issues before exploiting the data. We present the galaxy shear catalog that will be used for the three-year cosmological weak gravitational lensing analyses using data from the Wide layer of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) Survey. The galaxy shapes are measured from the $i$-band imaging data acquired from 2014 to 2019 and calibrated with image simulations that resemble the observing conditions of the survey based on training galaxy images from the Hubble Space Telescope in the COSMOS region. The catalog covers an area of 433.48 deg$^2$ of the northern sky, split into six fields. The mean $i$-band seeing is 0.59 arcsec. With conservative galaxy selection criteria (e.g., $i$-band magnitude brighter than 24.5), the observed raw galaxy number density is 22.9 arcmin$^{-2}$, and the effective galaxy number density is 19.9 arcmin$^{-2}$. The calibration removes the galaxy property-dependent shear estimation bias to a level: $|\delta m|<9\times 10^{-3}$. The bias residual $\delta m$ shows no dependence on redshift in the range $01$ degree scales and will require mitigation during the inference of cosmological parameters using cosmic shear measurements., Comment: 39 pages, 31 figures, 5 tables; PASJ (in press)

We present the launch of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Legacy Archive (HSCLA), a public archive of processed, science-ready data from Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). HSC is an optical wide-field imager installed at the prime focus of the Subaru Telescope and has been in operation since 2014. While ~1/3 of the total observing time of HSC has been used for the Subaru Strategic Program (SSP), the remainder of the time is used for PI programs. We have processed the data from these PI programs and make the processed, high quality data available to the community through HSCLA. The current version of HSCLA includes data taken in the first year of science operation, 2014. We provide both individual and coadd images as well as photometric catalogs. The photometric catalog from the coadd is loaded to the database, which offers a fast access to the large catalog. There are other online tools such as image browser and image cutout tool and they will be useful for science analyses. The coadd images reach 24-27th magnitudes at $5\sigma$ for point sources and cover approximately 580 square degrees in at least one filter with 150 million objects in total. We perform extensive quality assurance tests and verify the photometric and astrometric quality of the data to be good enough for most scientific explorations. However, the data are not without problems and users are referred to the list of known issues before exploiting the data for science. We present a comprehensive catalog of the dippers---young stellar objects that exhibit episodic dimming---derived from the one year's worth of data of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ($ TESS$) full-frame images. In the survey, we found 35 dippers using the convolutional neural network, most of them newly discovered. Although these dippers are widely distributed over the first half-hemisphere that $TESS$ surveyed, we identified the majority's membership with the nearest association Scorpius--Centaurus, Velorum OB2, and nearby Orion molecular cloud complex. However, several dippers are likely to be located in the field. We also found three old dippers whose age exceeds ten million year, which is considered as the disk dissipation time. The color-color diagram indicates that these old dippers are likely to have an extreme debris disk. In particular, we found a runaway old dipper having a large three-dimensional velocity of $72 \mathrm{km\ s}^{-1}$. The dippers in the field, which were probably escaping from their birth molecular clouds or were born outside the current area of star forming regions, are more common than previously considered., Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement

This paper presents the second data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program, a wide-field optical imaging survey on the 8.2 meter Subaru Telescope. The release includes data from 174 nights of observation through January 2018. The Wide layer data cover about 300 deg^2 in all five broadband filters (grizy) to the nominal survey exposure (10min in gr and 20min in izy). Partially observed areas are also included in the release; about 1100 deg^2 is observed in at least one filter and one exposure. The median seeing in the i-band is 0.6 arcsec, demonstrating the superb image quality of the survey. The Deep (26 deg^2) and UltraDeep (4 deg^2) data are jointly processed and the UltraDeep-COSMOS field reaches an unprecedented depth of i~28 at 5 sigma for point sources. In addition to the broad-bands, narrow-band data are also available in the Deep and UltraDeep fields. This release includes a major update to the processing pipeline, including improved sky subtraction, PSF modeling, object detection, and artifact rejection. The overall data quality has been improved, but this release is not without problems; there is a persistent deblender problem as well as new issues with masks around bright stars. The user is encouraged to review the issue list before utilizing the data for scientific explorations. All the image products as well as catalog products are available for download. The catalogs are also loaded to a database, which provides an easy interface for users to retrieve data for objects of interest. In addition to these main data products, detailed galaxy shape measurements withheld from the Public Data Release 1 (PDR1) are now available to the community. The shape catalog is drawn from the S16A internal release, which has a larger area than PDR1 (160 deg^2). We performed a far-IR imaging survey of the circumstellar dust shells of 144 evolved stars as a mission programme of the AKARI infrared astronomical satellite using the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) instrument. With this survey, we deliver far-IR surface brightness distributions of roughly 10' x 40' or 10' x 20' areas of the sky around the target evolved stars in the four FIS bands at 65, 90, 140, and 160 microns. Our objectives are to characterize the far-IR surface brightness distributions of the cold dust component in the circumstellar dust shells, from which we derive the amount of cold dust grains as low as 20 K and empirically establish the history of the early mass loss history. In this first installment of the series, we introduce the project and its aims, describe the observations, data reduction, and surface brightness correction process, and present the entire data set along with the results of integrated photometry measurements (i.e., the central source and circumstellar dust shell altogether). We find that (1) far-IR emission is detected from all but one object at the spatial resolution about 30" - 50" in the corresponding bands, (2) roughly 60 - 70 % of the target sources show some extension, (3) previously unresolved nearby objects in the far-IR are now resolved around 28 target sources, (4) the results of photometry measurements are reasonable with respect to the entries in the AKARI/FIS Bright Source Catalogue, despite the fact that the targets are assumed to be point-sources when catalogue flux densities were computed, and (5) an IR two-color diagram would place the target sources in a roughly linear distribution that may correlate with the age of the circumstellar dust shell and can potentially be used to identify which targets are more extended than others., Comment: To be published in PASJ AKARI Special Issue: 25 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables (and 28 supplementary figures available only in PASJ on-line)

The AKARI Infrared Astronomical Satellite produced the all-sky survey (AFASS) maps in the far-IR at roughly arc-minute spatial resolution, enabling us to investigate the whole sky in the far-IR for objects having surface brightnesses greater than a few to a couple of dozen MJy/sr. While the AFASS maps are absolutely calibrated against large-scale diffuse emission, it was uncertain whether or not an additional flux correction for point sources was necessary. Here, we verify that calibration for point-source photometry in the AFASS maps is proper. With the aperture correction method based on the empirical point-spread-function templates derived directly from the AFASS maps, fluxes in the AKARI bright source catalogue (BSC) are reproduced. The AKARI BSC fluxes are also satisfactorily recovered with the 1 sigma aperture, which is the empirical equivalent of an infinite aperture. These results confirm that in the AFASS maps far-IR photometry can be properly performed by using the aperture correction method for point sources and by summing all pixel values within an appropriately defined aperture of the intended target (i.e., the aperture photometry method) for extended sources., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to be published on PASJ (AKARI Special Issue)

We present a general surface brightness correction method for compact extended sources imaged in the slow-scan pointed observation mode of the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) aboard the AKARI Infrared Astronomical Satellite. Our method recovers correct surface brightness distribution maps by re-scaling archived raw FIS maps using the surface-brightness-dependent inverse FIS response function. The flux of a target source is then automatically corrected for as the simple sum of surface brightnesses within the adopted contour encircling the perimeter of the target (i.e., contour photometry). This correction method is contrasted to the previous aperture photometry method for point sources, which directly corrects for the target flux with a flux-dependent scaling law. The new surface brightness correction scheme is applicable to objects of any shape from unresolved point sources to resolved extended objects, as long as the target is not deemed diffuse, i.e., the total extent of the target source does not exceed too much more than a single FIS scan width of 10 arcmin. The new correction method takes advantage of the well-defined shape (i.e., the scale invariance) of the point-spread function, which enables us to adopt a power-law FIS response function. We analyze the point-source photometric calibrator data using the FIS AKARI Slow-scan Tool (FAST) and constrained the parameters of the adopted power-law FIS response function. We conclude that the photometric accuracy of the new correction method is better than 10% error based on comparisons with the expected fluxes of the photometric calibrators and that resulting fluxes without the present correction method can lead up to 230% overestimates or down to 50% underestimates., Comment: accepted for publication in PASJ

We present infrared views of the environmental effects on the dust properties in star-forming (SF) galaxies at z ~ 0, using the AKARI Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) all-sky map and the large spectroscopic galaxy sample from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). We restrict the sample to those within the redshift range of 0.05 < z < 0.07 and the stellar mass range of 9.2 < log_10 (M_star/M_solar). We select SF galaxies based on their H_alpha equivalent width (EW_Ha> 4 A) and emission line flux ratios. We perform far-infrared (FIR) stacking analyses by splitting the SDSS SF galaxy sample according to their stellar mass, specific SFR (SSFR_SDSS), and environment. We derive total infrared luminosity (LIR) for each subsample using the average flux densities at WIDE-S (90 micron) and WIDE-L (140 micron) bands, and then compute IR-based SFR (SFR_IR) from L_IR. We find a mild decrease of IR- based SSFR (SSFR_IR) amongst SF galaxies with increasing local density (~0.1-dex level at maximum), which suggests that environmental effects do not instantly shut down the SF activity in galaxies. We also derive average dust temperature (T_dust) using the flux densities at 90 micron and 140 micron bands. We confirm a strong positive correlation between T_dust and SSFR_IR, consistent with recent studies. The most important finding of this study is that we find a marginal trend that T_dust increases with increasing environmental galaxy density. Although the environmental trend is much milder than the SSFR-T_dust correlation, our results suggest that the environmental density may affect the dust temperature in SF galaxies, and that the physical mechanism which is responsible for this phenomenon is not necessarily specific to cluster environments because the environmental dependence of T_dust holds down to relatively low-density environments., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Zodiacal emission is thermal emission from interplanetary dust. Its contribution to the sky brightness is non-negligible in the region near the ecliptic plane, even in the far-infrared (far-IR) wavelength regime. We analyse zodiacal emission observed by the AKARI far-IR all-sky survey, which covers 97% of the entire sky at arcminute-scale resolution in four photometric bands, with central wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and 160 $\mu$m. AKARI detected small-scale structures in the zodiacal dust cloud, including the asteroidal dust bands and the circumsolar ring, at far-IR wavelengths. Although the smooth component of the zodiacal emission structure in the far-IR sky can be reproduced well by models based on existing far-IR observations, previous zodiacal emission models have discrepancies in the small-scale structures compared with observations. We investigate the geometry of the small-scale dust-band structures in the AKARI far-IR all-sky maps and construct template maps of the asteroidal dust bands and the circumsolar ring components based on the AKARI far-IR maps. In the maps, $\pm 1.4\deg$, $\pm 2.1\deg$ and $\pm 10\deg$ asteroidal dust-band structures are detected in the 65 $\mu$m and 90 $\mu$m bands. A possible $\pm 17\deg$ band may also have been detected. No evident dust-band structures are identified in either the 140 $\mu$m or the 160 $\mu$m bands. By subtracting the dust-band templates constructed in this paper, we can achieve a similar level of flux calibration of the AKARI far-IR all-sky maps in the $|\beta| < 40\deg$ region to that in the region for $|\beta| > 40\deg$., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, and 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

We perform image stacking analysis of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric galaxies over the AKARI Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) maps at 65{\mu}m, 90{\mu}m, and 140{\mu}m. The resulting image profiles are decomposed into the central galaxy component (single term) and the nearby galaxy component (clustering term), as a function of the r-band magnitude, m_r of the central galaxy. We find that the mean far-infrared (FIR) flux of a galaxy with magnitude m_r is well fitted with f^s_{90{\mu}m}=13*10^{0.306(18-m_r)}[mJy]. The FIR amplitude of the clustering term is consistent with that expected from the angular-correlation function of the SDSS galaxies, but galaxy morphology dependence needs to be taken into account for a more quantitative conclusion. We also fit the spectral energy distribution of stacked galaxies at 65{\mu}m, 90{\mu}m, and 140{\mu}m, and derive a mean dust temperature of ~30K. We present an initial analysis of the properties of the all-sky image obtained by the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard the AKARI satellite, at 65~$\mu$m (N60), 90~$\mu$m (WIDE-S), 140~$\mu$m (WIDE-L),and 160~$\mu$m (N160). Absolute flux calibration was determined by comparing the data with the COBE/DIRBE data sets, and the intensity range was as wide as from a few MJy~sr$^{-1}$ to $>$1~GJy~sr$^{-1}$. The uncertainties are considered to be the standard deviations with respect to the DIRBE data, and they are less than 10\% for intensities above 10, 3, 25, and 26~MJy~sr$^{-1}$ at the N60, WIDE-S, WIDE-L, and N160 bands, respectively. The characteristics of point sources in the image were also determined by stacking maps centred on photometric standard stars. The full width at half maxima of the point spread functions (PSFs) were 63$"$, 78$"$, and 88$"$ at the N60, WIDE-S, and WIDE-L bands, respectively. We present a far-infrared all-sky atlas from a sensitive all-sky survey using the Japanese $AKARI$ satellite. The survey covers $> 99$% of the sky in four photometric bands centred at 65 $\mu$m, 90 $\mu$m, 140 $\mu$m, and 160 $\mu$m with spatial resolutions ranging from 1 to 1.5 arcmin. These data provide crucial information for the investigation and characterisation of the properties of dusty material in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), since significant portion of its energy is emitted between $\sim$50 and 200 $\mu$m. The large-scale distribution of interstellar clouds, their thermal dust temperatures and column densities, can be investigated with the improved spatial resolution compared to earlier all-sky survey observations. In addition to the point source distribution, the large-scale distribution of ISM cirrus emission, and its filamentary structure, are well traced. In this work, we investigate the dependence of the covering factor (CF) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (i) on the mid-infrared (MIR) luminosity and (ii) on the redshift. We constructed 12- and 22-micron luminosity functions (LFs) at 0.006 < z < 0.3 using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} (WISE) data. Combining the WISE catalog with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic data, we selected 223,982 galaxies at 12 micron and 25,721 galaxies at 22 micron for spectroscopic classification. We then identified 16,355 AGNs at 12 micron and 4,683 AGNs at 22 micron by their optical emission lines and cataloged classifications in the SDSS. Following that, we estimated the CF as the fraction of type 2 AGN in all AGNs whose MIR emissions are dominated by the active nucleus (not their host galaxies) based on their MIR colors. We found that (i) the CF decreased with increasing MIR luminosity, regardless of the choice of type 2 AGN classification criteria, and (ii) the CF did not change significantly with the redshift for z < 0.2. Furthermore, we carried out various tests to determine the influence of selection bias and confirmed similar dependences exist even when taking these uncertainties into account. The luminosity dependence of the CF can be explained by the receding torus model, but the "modified" receding torus model gives a slightly better fit, as suggested by Simpson., Comment: 82 pages, 34 figures, and 12 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Investigations of the point spread functions (PSFs) and flux calibrations for stacking analysis have been performed with the far-infrared (wavelengths range of 60 to 140 um all-sky maps taken by the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard the AKARI satellite. The PSFs are investigated by stacking the maps at the positions of standard stars with their fluxes of 0.02 -10 Jy. The derived full widths at the half maximum (FWHMs) of the PSFs are ~ 60 arcsec at 65 and 90 um and ~ 90 arcsec at 140 um, which are much smaller than that of the previous all-sky maps obtained with IRAS (~ 6 arcmin). Any flux dependence in the PSFs is not seen on the investigated flux range. By performing the flux calibrations, we found that absolute photometry for faint sources can be carried out with constant calibration factors, which range from 0.6 to 0.8. After applying the calibration factors, the photometric accuracies for the stacked sources in the 65, 90, and 140 um bands are 9, 3, and 21 %, respectively, even below the detection limits of the survey. Any systematic dependence between the observed flux and model flux is not found. We present the 9 and 18 micron luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies at 0.006 < z < 0.8 (with an average redshift of ~ 0.04) using the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey catalog. We selected 243 galaxies at 9 micron and 255 galaxies at 18 micron from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy region. These galaxies were then classified by their optical emission lines, such as the line width of H_alpha or by their emission line ratios of [OIII]/H_beta and [NII]/H_alpha into five types: Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) (Type 1); Type 2 AGN (Type 2); low-ionization narrow emission line galaxies (LINER); galaxies with both star formation and narrow-line AGN activity (composite galaxies); and star-forming galaxies (SF). We found that (i) the number density ratio of Type 2 to Type 1 AGNs is 1.73 +/- 0.36, which is larger than a result obtained from the optical LF and (ii) this ratio decreases with increasing 18 micron luminosity., Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures, and 7 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Context. Little is known about the properties of the warm (Tdust >~ 150 K) debris disk material located close to the central star, which has a more direct link to the formation of terrestrial planets than the low temperature debris dust that has been detected to date. Aims. To discover new warm debris disk candidates that show large 18 micron excess and estimate the fraction of stars with excess based on the AKARI/IRC Mid-Infrared All-Sky Survey data. Methods. We have searched for point sources detected in the AKARI/IRC All-Sky Survey, which show a positional match with A-M dwarf stars in the Tycho-2 Spectral Type Catalogue and exhibit excess emission at 18 micron compared to that expected from the Ks magnitude in the 2MASS catalogue. Results. We find 24 warm debris candidates including 8 new candidates among A-K stars. The apparent debris disk frequency is estimated to be 2.8 +/- 0.6%. We also find that A stars and solar-type FGK stars have different characteristics of the inner component of the identified debris disk candidates --- while debris disks around A stars are cooler and consistent with steady-state evolutionary model of debris disks, those around FGK stars tend to be warmer and cannot be explained by the steady-state model., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present an asteroidal catalog from the mid-infrared wavelength region using the slow-scan observation mode obtained by the Infrared Camera (IRC) on-board the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI. An archive of IRC slow-scan observations comprising about 1000 images was used to search for serendipitous encounters of known asteroids. We have determined the geometric albedos and diameters for 88 main-belt asteroids, including two asteroids in the Hilda region, and compared these, where possible, with previously published values. Approximately one-third of the acquired data reflects new asteroidal information. We report Herschel and AKARI photometric observations at far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths of the debris disk around the F3V star HD 15407A, in which the presence of an extremely large amount of warm dust (~500-600 K) has been suggested by mid-infrared (MIR) photometry and spectroscopy. The observed flux densities of the debris disk at 60-160 micron are clearly above the photospheric level of the star, suggesting excess emission at FIR as well as at MIR wavelengths previously reported. The observed FIR excess emission is consistent with the continuum level extrapolated from the MIR excess, suggesting that it originates in the inner warm debris dust and cold dust (~50-130 K) is absent in the outer region of the disk. The absence of cold dust does not support a late heavy bombardment-like event as an origin of the large amount of warm debris dust around HD 15047A., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Far-infrared observations provide crucial data for the investigation and characterisation of the properties of dusty material in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), since most of its energy is emitted between ~100 and 200 um. We present the first all-sky image from a sensitive all-sky survey using the Japanese AKARI satellite, in the wavelength range 50 -- 180 um. Covering >99% of the sky in four photometric bands with four filters centred at 65 um, 90 um, 140 um, and 160 um wavelengths, this achieved spatial resolutions from 1 to 2 arcmin and a detection limit of <10 MJy sr-1, with absolute and relative photometric accuracies of <20%. All-sky images of the Galactic dust continuum emission enable astronomers to map the large-scale distribution of the diffuse ISM cirrus, to study its thermal dust temperature, emissivity and column density, and to measure the interaction of the Galactic radiation field and embedded objects with the surrounding ISM. In addition to the point source population of stars, protostars, star-forming regions, and galaxies, the high Galactic latitude sky is shown to be covered with a diffuse filamentary-web of dusty emission that traces the potential sites of high latitude star formation. We show that the temperature of dust particles in thermal equilibrium with the ambient interstellar radiation field can be estimated by using 90 um, 140 um, and 160 um data. We present the characterization and calibration of the slow-scan observation mode of the Infrared Camera (IRC) on-board AKARI. The IRC slow-scan observations were operated at the S9W (9 $\mu$m) and L18W (18 $\mu$m) bands. We have developed a toolkit for data reduction of the IRC slow-scan observations. We introduced a "self-pointing reconstruction" method to improve the positional accuracy to as good as 1". The sizes of the point spread functions were derived to be $\sim6"$ at the S9W band and $\sim7"$ at the L18W bands in full width at half maximum. The flux calibrations were achieved with the observations of 3 and 4 infrared standard stars at the S9W and L18W bands, respectively. The flux uncertainties are estimated to be better than 20% from comparisons with the AKARI IRC PSC and the WISE preliminary catalog., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present the discovery of a source with broadband infrared photometric characteristics similar to Sakurai's Object. WISE J180956.27-330500.2 (hereafter, J1810-3305) shows very red WISE colors, but a very blue 2MASS [K] vs. WISE [W1 (3.4 micron)] color. It was not visible during the IRAS era, but now has a 12 micron flux well above the IRAS point source catalog detection limit. There are also indications of variability in historical optical photographic plates, as well as in multi-epoch AKARI mid-infrared measurements. The broadband infrared spectral energy distribution, post-IRAS brightening and multiwavelength variability are all characteristics also shared by Sakurai's Object - a post asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) star which underwent a late thermal pulse and recently ejected massive envelopes of dust that are currently expanding and cooling. Optical progenitor colors suggest that J1810-3305 may have been of late spectral class. Its dramatic infrared brightening, and the detection of a late-type optical counterpart are consistent with a scenario in which we have caught an extremely massive dust ejection event (in 1998 or shortly before) during the thermal pulse of an AGB star, thus providing a unique opportunity to observe stellar evolution in this phase. J1810-3305 is the only source in the entire WISE preliminary data release with similar infrared SED and variability, emphasizing the rarity of such sources. We present the results of an unbiased asteroid survey in the mid-infrared wavelength with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI. About 20% of the point source events recorded in the AKARI All-Sky Survey observations are not used for the IRC Point Source Catalog (IRC-PSC) in its production process because of the lack of multiple detection by position. Asteroids, which are moving objects on the celestial sphere, remain in these "residual events". We identify asteroids out of the residual events by matching them with the positions of known asteroids. For the identified asteroids, we calculate the size and albedo based on the Standard Thermal Model. Finally we have a brand-new catalog of asteroids, named the Asteroid Catalog Using Akari (AcuA), which contains 5,120 objects, about twice as many as the IRAS asteroid catalog. The catalog objects comprise 4,953 main belt asteroids, 58 near Earth asteroids, and 109 Jovian Trojan asteroids. Aims: We search new T Tauri star (TTS) candidates with the mid-infrared (MIR) part of the AKARI All-Sky Survey at 9 and 18 um wavelengths. Methods: We used the point source catalogue (PSC), obtained by the Infrared Camera (IRC) on board AKARI. We combined the 2MASS PSC and the 3rd version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalogue (UCAC) with the AKARI IRC-PSC, and surveyed 517 known TTSs over a 1800-square-degree part of the Taurus-Auriga region to find criteria to extract TTSs. We considered asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, post-AGB stars, Planetary Nebulae (PNe), and galaxies, which have similar MIR colours, to separate TTSs from these sources. Results: Of the 517 known TTSs, we detected 133 sources with AKARI. Based on the colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams made from the AKARI, 2MASS, and UCAC surveys, we propose the criteria to extract TTS candidates from the AKARI All-Sky data. On the basis of our criteria, we selected 176/14725 AKARI sources as TTS candidates which are located around the Taurus-Auriga region. Comparing these sources with SIMBAD, there are 148 previously identified sources including 115 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), and 28 unidentified sources. Conclusions: Based on SIMBAD identifications, we take the TTS-identification probability using our criteria to be ~75 %. We find 28 TTS candidates, of which we expect 21 to be confirmed once follow-up observations can be obtained. Although the probability of ~75 % is not so high, it is affected by the completeness of the SIMBAD database, and we can search for TTSs over the whole sky, over all star forming regions., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Context : AKARI is the first Japanese astronomical satellite dedicated to infrar ed astronomy. One of the main purposes of AKARI is the all-sky survey performed with six infrared bands between 9 and 200um during the period from 2006 May 6 to 2007 August 28. In this paper, we present the mid-infrared part (9um and 18um b ands) of the survey carried out with one of the on-board instruments, the Infrar ed Camera (IRC). Aims : We present unprecedented observational results of the 9 and 18um AKARI al l-sky survey and detail the operation and data processing leading to the point s ource detection and measurements. Methods : The raw data are processed to produce small images for every scan and point sources candidates, above the 5-sigma noise level per single scan, are der ived. The celestial coordinates and fluxes of the events are determined statisti cally and the reliability of their detections is secured through multiple detect ions of the same source within milli-seconds, hours, and months from each other. Results : The sky coverage is more than 90% for both bands. A total of 877,091 s ources (851,189 for 9um, 195,893 for 18um) are confirmed and included in the cur rent release of the point source catalogue. The detection limit for point source s is 50mJy and 90mJy for the 9um and 18um bands, respectively. The position accu racy is estimated to be better than 2". Uncertainties in the in-flight absolute flux calibration are estimated to be 3% for the 9um band and 4% for the 18um ban d. The coordinates and fluxes of detected sources in this survey are also compar ed with those of the IRAS survey and found to be statistically consistent., Comment: Accepted for publication in AandA AKARI special issue
