1. Advancing flood resilience: the nexus between flood risk management, green infrastructure, and resilience

Abstract

Introduction: Climate change and the fast pace of urbanization are two major factors contributing to the exacerbated risk of flooding in urban areas. Flood resilience strategies, underpinned by the principles of green infrastructure, are gaining importance as within broader spatial planning approaches, and various global cities are adopting revised policies and frameworks to improve flood risk management. Yet, such responsive approaches are still limited and context-specific. Methods: In this article, thematic analysis using NVivo was employed to analyse 49 documents related to flood risk management, resilience, and green infrastructure planning. Results: This paper reflects on the concepts of flood risk management, flood resilience and green infrastructure planning to identify the synergies between these concepts, and identify challenges that are prohibiting global flood resilience. Discussion: Enhancing flood resilience requires coordinated efforts, effective communication, and collaborative governance among stakeholders. The paper also draws planning recommendations for advancing flood resilience through governance and an integrated planning approach, in support of the global goals toward flood resilience.

2. Effect of total Khaya senegalensis (Meliaceae) barks extracts on hepatic liberation of glucose

Abstract

Background: Increasing the use of traditional therapy is an obvious reality in some country. The bark of Khaya senegalensis is suspected to treat diabetes. That is what this type of work is started. Aims & Objective: The aim of this work is to test the effect of total Khaya senegalensis barks extracts on the hepatic liberation of glucose in vitro. Materials and Methods: The dried extracts obtained from barks powder had been prepared at concentrations of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 20 μg/L and applied on fragments of mice Wistar isolated liver, kept in Mack -Ewen solution. After incubation at 37°C in oven, glucose level in the solution had been measured by spectrophometer, using GOD-PAP® regent, for each extracts concentration at the times T=0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes. Results: Glucose level in the solution had varied in time function from one extracts concentration to another. Khaya senegalensis barks total extracts had reduced hepatic liberation of glucose. This effect had been comparable to the effect of insulin 2,5IU solution used like reference substance in this experimentation. The total extracts of Khaya senegalensis barks could actuate on enzymes implicated in the metabolism of intra hepatocytary glucose. Conclusion: This investigation had been coupled to phytochimic analyses that showed the presence of saponoides, anthracitic derivers and steroids in Khaya senegalensis barks.

Abstract

A method for the rapid trace analysis of 17 residual pesticides in water by narrow-bore capillary (I.D. 100 microm) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using a programmable temperature vaporizer (PTV) was discussed. The method consisted of a large-volume injection (40 microl) by a PTV, high-speed analysis using a narrow-bore capillary column and MS detection. The PTV with solvent vent mode was very useful for large-volume injection into a narrow-bore capillary column because the injected solvent volume could be reduced to less than 2 microl. The analysis time was 8.5 min [less than 50% of the analysis time using conventional columns (I.D. 250 microm)]. A 10-ml volume of river water was extracted by dichloromethane (4 ml), and then the extract was condensed to 1 ml. This extract was analyzed. Mean recoveries for river water spiked at 100 pg/ml ranged from 83.4 to 96.7%. The limit of detections of the 17 pesticides ranged from 1 to 100 pg/ml.
