This study aimed to reveal the genetic variability of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) displacement-loop (D-loop) region in 62 animals belonging to three native Turkish cattle breeds, namely Anatolian Black (AB), East Anatolian Red (EAR) and Zavot (ZAV), and to conduct phylogenetic relationship analyses to obtain deeper information on their genetic origin and breeding history by comparison of 6 taurine and 11 indicine breeds, together with 66 polymorphic sites, a total of 31 haplotypes, of which 15, 10 and 6 were detected in AB, EAR and ZAV, respectively. Mean nucleotide and haplotype diversity were 0.01 and 0.891, respectively, whereas the genetic differentiation derived from Wright's FST index was 0.174 across the breeds. A significant level of total variation (17.42 %) was observed among breeds in molecular variance analysis. Six main haplogroups (T, T1, T2, T3, Q and I2) were detected in Anatolian cattle populations, where T3 was the most frequent among breeds (43.55 %), whereas I2, an indicine specific haplogroup, was observed only in ZAV. At the breed level, phylogenetic analyses supported by 198 sequences of 17 cattle breeds and 3 outgroup species retrieved from the GenBank clustered native Turkish cattle breeds with the taurine group rather than the indicine one, as expected. However, indicine admixture at low frequency (8.89 %) was detected in the ZAV breed for the first time due to more likely gene flow from indicine cattle breeds raised in neighbour countries, particularly Iran. This finding should be further investigated in all native Turkish and indicine cattle breeds from nearby countries to clarify gene flow and indicine admixture in Anatolian cattle.

Environmental stressors have, over generations, influenced the morphology, anatomy, behaviour, physiology, and genetic structure of small ruminants. The widespread dispersal of small ruminants over vast geographical areas occurred along with human migration, thereby promoting the adaptative process to different environmental conditions mainly through natural selection. Ongoing global warming prompted scientific efforts to deepen the knowledge and understanding of adaptation traits in small ruminants. Compared to other ruminants, sheep and goats seem to have a better adaptation ability to environmental stressors, as evident by their presence across different geographic areas on a global level. Adaptation to a specific environment leads to variations in precise genomic regions, allowing for the identification and selection of animals with a high capacity of adaptation to environmental stressors. Rapid development in sequencing technologies, together with bioinformatics tools, make it possible to analyse the genomic regions related to environmental adaptation. Hence, the aims of this review were (i) to outline the main steps of the evolution process in sheep and goat species, (ii) to summarise candidate genes related to environmental adaptation, and (iii) to evaluate both selection and conservation possibilities of these genes in native small ruminant breeds for future challenges to better face the global warming., peer-reviewed

Since domestication, farm animals have played a key role to increase the prosperity of humankind, while animal welfare (AW) is debated even today. This paper aims to comprehensively review the contributions of developing molecular genetics to farm animal welfare (FAW) and to raise awareness among both scientists and farmers about AW. Welfare is a complex trait affected by genetic structure and environmental factors. Therefore, the best welfare status can be achieved not only to enhance environmental factors such as management and feeding practices, but also the genetic structure of animals must be improved. In this regard, advances in molecular genetics have made great contributions to improve the genetic structure of farm animals, which has increased AW. Today, by sequencing and/or molecular markers, genetic diseases may be detected and eliminated in local herds. Additionally, genes related to diseases or adaptations are investigated by molecular techniques, and the frequencies of desired genotypes are increased in farm animals to keep welfare at an optimized level. Furthermore, stress on animals can be reduced with DNA extraction from stool and feather samples which reduces physical contact between animals and veterinarians. Together with molecular genetics, advances in genome editing tools and biotechnology are promising to improve FAW in the future.

The aim of the present study was to detect a total of 11 polymorphisms of 6 genes (OCX32, GHR, DRD, VIP, VIPR, MR) related to egg yield and quality in six brown layer lines namely Rhode Island Red-I (RIRI), Rhode Island Red-II (RIRII), Barred Rock-I (BARI), Barred Rock-II (BARII), Colombian Rock (COL) and Line-54 (L5-4) raised in Ankara Poultry Research Institute. A total of 208 samples belonging to RIRI (n= 32), RIRII (n= 32), BARI (n= 40), BARII (n= 32), COL (n= 32) and L-54 (n= 40) were genotyped by PCR-RFLP method. For this reason, a total of 11 polymorphic regions were amplified by PCR and then PCR products were digested with specific restriction endonucleases. Results of the present study showed that polymorphisms and adequate genetic variations were found in OCX32-ex4/NcoI, OCX32-ex2/HpyCH4IV, DRD2/BseGI, VIPR-1/HhaI, VIPR-2/TaqI and MR1C/MboI genes which previously reported to associated with egg quality and yield in different chicken lines. However, conducting the association analysis between these genes and egg yield and quality will be useful. On the contrary, it has been revealed that GHR-intron 2/HindIII, GHR-intron 5/NspI, VIP-501/VspI, DRD1/BseNI and VIP-I2/HinfI polymorphisms cannot be used to increase egg yield and quality due to no detection of desired genotypes or homozygous excess.

Sinir Buyume Faktoru ( NGF ) geni yumurtalik hucrelerinin yasamini devam ettirmesi ve cogalmasinda onemli fonksiyonlara sahiptir. Keci NGF geni uzerinde yapilan son calismalar, iki SNP’in ( Sac II /C291A ve Mbo II /A705G polimorfizmi) vucut uzunlugu ve bir batinda dogan yavru sayisi ile iliskili oldugunu ortaya cikarmistir. Bu calismada, Turkiye’de yetistirilen Kil (HAI), Kabakulak (KBK), Honamli (HNM) ve Norduz (NRD) keci populasyonlarinin NGF geninde Sac II ve Mbo II polimorfizminin PCR-RFLP yontemiyle belirlenmesi amaclanmistir. NGF geninde farkli genotiplerin belirlenmesi icin cogaltilan 808 bc uzunlugundaki PCR urunleri Sac II, 319 bc uzunlugundaki PCR urunleri ise Mbo II restriksiyon enzimi ile kesilmistir. NGF / Sac II polimorfizminde A allel frekansi 0.500 (Kil, Honamli ve Kabakulak) ile 0.950 (Norduz) araliginda degisirken, C allel frekansi 0.025 (Norduz) ile 0.500 (Kil, Honamli ve Kabakulak) araliginda degismistir. NGF / Mbo II polimorfizminde A allel frekansi 0.213 (Kil) ile 1.000 (Norduz) araliginda degisirken, G allel frekansi 0.000 (Norduz) ile 0.787 (Kil) araliginda degismistir. Honamli populasyonunda HW dengesinden sapma onemli bulunmustur ( P < 0.05). Bu calismada, Turkiye’nin yerli keci populasyonlarinda keci NGF gen polimorfizmi ilk defa ortaya cikarilmistir. Bu calismandan elde edilen sonuclar, NGF /Sac II polimorfizminin Norduz popuslayonunda vucut uzunlugu, icin, NGF /Mbo II polimorfizminin ise Kil, Honamli ve Kabakulak populasyonlarinda bir batinda dogan yavru sayisi icin markor destekli seleksiyon (MAS) calismalarinda kullanilabilecegini gostermistir.

In this study, we investigated the effect of SNP haplotypes on insulin-like growth factor gene (IGF-1) related with weights of body, back, chest, leg and wing in the fifteen generation selected Japanese quail (C. coturnix japonica) lines according to the 5th week live weight. 8 SNP haplotypes were identified in the 167-bp DNA sequence of the IGF-1 gene coding region identified in a total of 108 individuals from three quail lines (control, high body weight: HBW and low body weight: LBW). ANOM (Analysis of Means of Analysis) was performed to determine the relationships between carcass components with SNP haplotypes and to compare quail genotypes. There were significant differences between the quail lines in terms of SNP haplotypes. As a result, it was determined that fifteen-generation selection in Japanese quails resulted in differences in insulin-like growth factor-1 gene and these differences were reflected in carcass components.

This study aims to reveal the genotypic structure of four cattle breeds; Holstein (HS), Turkish Grey Steppe (TGS), Anatolian Black (AB) and East Anatolian Red (EAR), raised in Turkey in terms of CD14, MBL, ITGB6, SLC11A1 and TLR2 genes and to evaluate their usefulness in Marker Assisted Selection (MAS). It also assesses whether the loci associated with resistance to diseases are suitable for phylogenetic analysis. Desired alleles and/or genotypes were detected in native Turkish cattle breeds at different frequencies in terms of polymorphisms of CD14, MBL, ITGB6, SLC11A1 and TLR2 genes which were previously reported to be associated with mastitis, foot-and-mouth disease and tuberculosis. These variations offer opportunities to improve selection strategies against diseases in the future. These results preliminary indicate that associated studies between these variations and disease resistance in native Turkish cattle breeds should be conducted. On the other hand, phylogenetic tree constructed based on genetic distance clearly separated native Turkish cattle breeds from HS breed. The gene regions related to diseases can be used to distinguish native cattle breeds from exotic ones.

Together with the Neolithic human expansions, cattle spread from domestication centres and colonized the world. During their tangled expansion dynamics, European cattle occasionally intermingled with local aurochs leading to an exclusive pattern of genetic diversity. Among the most ancient European cattle, are breeds belonging to the so-called Podolian trunk which their history is still not well established. Here we used genome-wide SNP data of 806 individuals belonging to 36 breeds to reconstruct the origin and diversification of the Podolian cattle and to provide a reliable scenario of the European colonization, through an Approximate Bayesian Computation approach. Our results indicate that European Podolian cattle displays higher values of all genetic diversity indices when compared to both African taurine and Asian indicine. All our clustering analyses show close genomic relationships among Podolian breeds suggesting their possible common genetic ancestry. When we simulated and tested scenarios of colonization, we found that Podolian cattle followed different colonization routes, in line with two principal human migrations: via the Danube during the early stages of the Neolithic farmer expansions and through sea routes likely during the pre-Etruscan period. Furthermore, the best fitting model indicates that these two genomic pools admixed in Italy suggesting the Peninsula as an important hub for the Podolian cattle.

Conservation and breeding programmes of livestock species depend on determination of genetic diversity. Today in livestock species, microsatellite markers are commonly used to reveal population structure and genetic diversity in both breeds and varieties. In this study, population structure, genetic diversity, and differentiation among four native Turkish sheep breeds including Güney Karaman, Kangal, Norduz, and Karakas were assessed by using 21 microsatellite loci. By genotyping 120 individuals belonging to four sheep breeds, a total of 275 different alleles, 37 of which were private alleles, were observed across all loci. The mean number of alleles per breed ranged from 7.28 (Güney Karaman) to 8.09 (Karakas), while allelic richness ranged from 7.22 (Güney Karaman) to 7.87 (Karakas). Mean observed heterozygosity varied from 0.60 (Kangal) to 0.66 (Norduz and Karakas). The lowest pairwise FST value (0.084) was between Kangal and Karakas populations, while the highest pairwise FST value (0.142) was between Norduz and Karakas populations. Polymorphic information content (PIC) values, ranging from 0.71 (ETH10) to 0.91 (OarFCB304), were highly polymorphic (PIC > 0.5) and informative in studied populations. In the present study, the results of phylogenetic analysis were of importance, since all studied populations have been accepted as Akkaraman varieties till today. However, factorial correspondence and structure analysis, pairwise FST values, and an unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean analysis (UPGMA) dendrogram revealed that Güney Karaman and Norduz populations have became genetically different from the Akkaraman breed due being raised in different parts of Turkey under different climatic conditions together with their breeding practices. Therefore, we recommend that more comprehensive molecular studies should be conducted to clarify genetic differentiation of Akkaraman sheep varieties.

İnsülin benzeri büyüme faktörü-I (IGF-I) ve nöropeptid Y (NPY) tavuklarda üreme özellikleri ile ilişkili aday genlerdir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Ankara Tavukçuluk Araştırma Enstitüsü‘nde yetiştirilen yumurtacı saf hatlarda IGF-I ve NPY genlerindeki polimorfizmlerin PCR-RFLP yöntemi kullanılarak belirlenmesidir. Bu amaçla IGF-I (5' untranslated region) ve NPY genleri için sırasıyla 621 ve 248 bç büyüklüğündeki bantlar çoğaltılmıştır. PCR ürünleri IGF-I ve NPY genleri üzerindeki tek nükleotid polimorfizmlerini (SNP) belirlemek için sırasıyla PstI ve DraI restriksiyon enzimleri ile kesildi. IGF-I geni için Brown ve D-229 dışındaki tüm hatlar polimorfik bulunmuştur. Kahverengi yumurtacı saf hatlarda IGF-I geni için A allelinin frekansı 0,344 (COL) ile 0,906 (RIRII) aralığında değişirken, beyaz yumurtacı saf hatlarda 0,781 (Maroon) ile 1,000 (D-229, Brown) aralığında bulunmuştur. Bu çalışmada NPY geni için tüm kahverengi yumurtacı saf hatlar polimorfik iken, beyaz yumurtacı tavuk hatlarında sadece Maroon hattı monomorfik bulunmuştur. NPY geni için T allelinin frekansı kahverengi yumurtacılarda 0,200 (BARI) ile 0,985 (COL), beyaz yumurtacılarda ise 0,397 (D-229) ile 1,000 (Maroon) aralığında değişmiştir. Uygulanan ki-kare testine (χ2) göre polimorfik populasyonlarda Hardy-Weinberg dengesinden sapma gözlenmemiştir. Sonuç olarak Ankara Tavukçuluk Araştırma Enstitüsü‘nde yetiştirilen yumurtacı saf hatlarda IGF-I ve NPY genlerindeki polimorfizmler ilk kez gösterilmiştir.

Objective: Many molecular tools are available to analyse phylogenetic relationships in livestock. Nowadays, Simple Sequence Repeats and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms are commonly used molecular techniques to determine phylogenetic relationships in livestock breeds or types. However, alternative molecular techniques may be preferred to conduct phylogenetic analysis in case of limiting conditions such as budget and time. In this context, in the present study, Simple Sequence Repeats and Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism techniques were compared to reveal phylogenetic relationship based on genetic distances.Material and Methods: In this study, 11 different layer pure chicken lines represented by 30 individuals for each line were genotyped based on 11 Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism and 17 Simple Sequence Repeats loci to analyse phylogenetic relationship.Results: Both techniques showed almost similar results in terms of Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean dendrogram created based on genetic distances. White and brown chicken lines were separated by both Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism and Simple Sequence Repeats techniques in harmony with their genetic origins and breeding history.Conclusion: It is suggested that Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism technique may be preferred to analyse phylogenetic relationship based on genetic distance, when the budget, time and laboratory infrastructure are limited., Amaç: Çiftlik hayvanlarında filogenetik ilişkini n analizi için çok sayıda moleküler araç nmaktadır. Günümüzde çiftlik hayvanı ırk ve tiplerinde filogenetik ilişkinin belirlenmesinde Basit Dizi Tekrarları ve Tek Nükleotid Polimorfizmleri en yaygın kullanılan moleküler tekniklerdir. Bununla birlikte, bütçe ve zaman gibi sınırlayıcı koşullarda filogenetik analiz yapabilmek için alternatif moleküler teknikler tercih edilebilir. Bu bağlamda, mevcut çalışmada genetik mesafe temelli filogenetik ilişkinin ortaya çıkarılmasında Basit Dizi Tekrarları ve Polimeraz Zincir ReaksiyonuRestriksiyon Parça Uzunluk Polimorfizmi teknikleri karşılaştırılmıştır.Materyal ve Metot: Bu çalışmada filogenetik ilişki analizi için 11 farklı yumurtacı saf hattın her birinden 30’ar birey 11 PCR-RFLP ve 17 SSR lokus temelinde genotiplendirilmiştir.Bulgular: Genetik mesafe temelinde oluşturulan UPGMA dendogramı bakımından her iki teknik benzer sonuçlar göstermiştir. The present study aimed to determine genetic variability and population structure of native Turkish goats including Hair, Kabakulak, Honamli and Norduz. A total of 255 different alleles and 16 private alleles were detected across 20 microsatellite loci. Number of alleles ranged from 8.30 (Norduz) to 11.70 (Hair), whereas number of effective alleles varied from 5.20 (Norduz) to 7.21 (Hair). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.69 (Honamli) to 0.75 (Hair), while expected heterozygosity varied from 0.80 (Norduz) to 0.85 (Hair). FIS values ranged from 0.09 (HAI) to 0.16 (HNM). Unlike previous studies, phylogenetic analysis revealed that Norduz breed was turned out to be genetically different from the other breeds for the first time. Additionally, the present study was the first attempt revealing that Kabakulak goats which are accepted as Hair variety until today, were genetically closer to Honamli than Hair goat breed.

Background Over the past 15 years, 300 out of 6000 breeds of all farm animal species identified by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have gone extinct. Among cattle, many Podolian breeds are seriously endangered in various European areas. Podolian cattle include a group of very ancient European breeds, phenotypically close to the aurochs ancestors (Bos primigenius). The aim of the present study was to assess the genetic diversity of Podolian breeds and to reconstruct their origin. Methodology The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control-regions of 18 Podolian breeds have been phylogenetically assessed. Nine non-Podolian breeds have been also included for comparison. Conclusion The overall analysis clearly highlights some peculiarities in the mtDNA gene pool of some Podolian breeds. In particular, a principal component analysis point to a genetic proximity between five breeds (Chianina, Marchigiana, Maremmana, Podolica Italiana and Romagnola) reared in Central Italy and the Turkish Grey. We here propose the suggestive hypothesis of a dual ancestral contribution to the present gene pool of Podolian breeds, one deriving from Eastern European cattle; the other arising from the arrival of Middle Eastern cattle into Central Italy through a different route, perhaps by sea, ferried by Etruscan boats. The historical migration of Podolian cattle from North Eastern Europe towards Italy has not cancelled the mtDNA footprints of this previous ancient migration.

To preserve sheep biodiversity is an important issue as the most productive breeds are becoming dependent on intensive management and breeders are abandoning the traditional breeds. The Cornigliese sheep is a local breed from Parma Apennine. In the last centuries it was crossed with Merino and Bergamasca breeds. The aim of this work is to investigate the genetic variability in the Cornigliese breed using 27 microsatellite markers. A total of 144 individual blood samples were randomly collected from the following breeds: Cornigliese, Bergamasca, Appenninica and Spanish Merino. The Palmera breed was used as out-group. A total of 344 alleles were detected. The average expected heterozygosity ranged from a maximum of 0.77 in Appenninica to a minimum of 0.68 in Bergamasca. In general, Cornigliese showed heterozygosity estimates less than expected. The Reynolds weighted genetic distance among the breeds highlighted a clear cluster, including Cornigliese and Bergamasca. As expected, they appeared in close neighbourhood in the tree because of the historic crossbreeding practices between these two breeds. Results of STRUCTURE analyses show that the four studied breeds were discriminated into separate clusters, even if Cornigliese has some individual related to Bergamasca and Spanish Merino. This work confirmed the historical information about the origin of Cornigliese breed which reports gene flow among these breeds. The genetic parameters show a moderate value of inbreeding in Cornigliese and therefore this breed should be monitored due the low number of individuals that compose it.

In this study, the aim was to determine the internal and external quality traits of partridge (Alectoris chukar) eggs as well as the Pearson correlation coefficients among these traits. For use in this research, a total of 200 partridge eggs were collected over three sequential days. The partridges were housed at the Research Unit of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Akdeniz. The eggs were categorized according to weight and classified as ≤19.0 g, 19.1–20.0 g, 20.1–21.0 g and ≥21.1 g. Average eggshell thickness was highest in groups of 20.1–21.0 g and ≥21.1 g. In contrast, lowest eggshell weight was calculated in groups of ≤19.0 g and 19.1–20.0 g. In this study, egg shape index, yolk index, Haugh unit, albumen width and unit surface shell weight were not significantly affected by egg weight groups. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de yetiştirilen 7 yerli koyun ırkında kalpastatin (CAST) gen polimorfzmi PCR-RFLP metodu kullanılarak araştırılmıştır. CAST geninin M ve N allelleri frekansları; Kangal (n= 31), İvesi (n= 26), Güney Karaman (n= 23), Akkaraman (n= 21), Morkaraman (n= 34), Karayaka (n= 33) ve Karakaş (n= 22) koyun ırklarında sırasıyla 0.92- 0.08, 0.59-0.41, 0.67-0.33, 0.69-0.31, 0.87-0.13, 0.86-0.14, 0.89-0.11 olarak tespit edilmiştir. The objective of this study was to assess genetic diversity of Guney Karaman Turkish local sheep breed. A total of 29 samples were genotyped by using 14 STR markers. All markers were polymorphic. The number of alleles in Guney Karaman sheep breed ranged from 3 to 11 per locus, with a mean of 7.42. The average observed and expected heterozygosity was 0.659 and 0.794, respectively. Mean inbreeding coefficient (Fis) value was found 0.175. The PIC values ranged from 0.569 to 0.860 with a mean of 0.743. The findings of this research demonstrate at moderate level gene diversity and heterozygosity with lower inbreeding in Guney Karaman sheep breed.

Bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD) and bovine citrullinaemia (BC) are autosomal recessive genetic diseases in Holstein cattle breeds and both result in death of homozygous animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of BLAD and BC alleles in Holstein cows reared in the Antalya region of Turkey. In this study, blood samples were collected from a total of 504 Holstein breed randomly selected from the populations raised in different parts of Antalya. The polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis was used to identify individuals with these diseases. To cut the target regions TaqI and AvaII restriction enzymes were used to investigate the BLAD and BC alleles, respectively. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of thermal manipulations during early embryogenesis (EE) and late embryogenesis (LE) on body temperature of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Incubation conditions from day 0 to day 17 were 37.7°C and 55% relative humidity for control group. In the thermally treated eggs during EE (EE6, EE7 and EE8 days), incubation temperature was increased to 41°C and relative humidity to 65% for 3 hours (12:00–15:00) on the sixth, seventh and eighth days of incubation. Also, in the LE stage (EL12, EL13 and EL14 days), incubation temperature was increased to 41°C and relative humidity to 65% for 3 hours (12:00–15:00) on the 12th, 13th and 14th days of incubation. Summary In this study, it was aimed to determine the internal and external quality traits of the Guinea fowl eggs as well as the phenotypic correlation among the these traits. Totally 100 Guinea fowl eggs were collected in three sequential days were used for this study. The birds were housed at Poultry Research Unit of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Akdeniz. Values of egg weight, egg length, egg width, eggshape index, eggshell weight, eggshell ratio, eggshell thickness, eggshell surface area, unit surface area and egg volume were determined as 40.14 g, 49.47 mm, 37.89 mm, 0.76%, 6.48 g, 16%, 0.54 mm, 65.69 cm 2 , 0.11 g/cm 2 , respectively. In addition, values of yolk weight, yolk height, yolk width, yolk index, yolk ratio, albumen height, albumen width, albumen length, albumen weight, albumen index, yolk/albumen ratio and haugh unit were found as 13.58 g, 14.99 mm, 40.64 mm, 37%, 33%, 4.77 mm, 62.97 mm, 80.07 mm, 21.62 g, 6.7%, 68% and 74.97%, respectively. According to the results determined in this study, all most all external quality traits of the egg were changed at the significant levels depending on the change occurred in the egg weight. The results indicated that egg weight influences external egg quality traits of quinea fowl. The positive correlations obtained among the egg quality traits indicated that they can be improved phenotypically through selection.

The aim of this study was to investigated the effects of the egg shape index on egg quality characteristics in Guinea fowl. For this, the eggs were classified in terms of egg shape index, as ≤ 75, < 76 -77 > and ≥ 78. A total of 100 Guinea fowl eggs were evaluated to determine the egg quality traits ( egg weight, eggshell thickness, eggshell surface area, eggshell weight per unit surface area, eggshell ratio, albumen index, albumen ratio, yolk index, yolk ratio, yolk/albumen ratio, haugh unit and egg volume). In this study, eggshell thickness, eggshell weight per unit surface area, eggshell ratio, albumen index, albumen ratio, yolk index, yolk ratio, yolk/albumen ratio and haugh unit were not significantly affected by egg shape index groups. Whereas egg weight, eggshell surface area and egg volume were significantly affected by egg shape index groups. At the same time, there were found significant relationship between the egg shape index and egg quality traits. Egg shape index was found to be an important factor affecting the egg quality characteristics.

Bu arastirmada, Akdeniz Universitesi Ziraat Fakultesi Zootekni Bolumu Hayvancilik Unitesi’nde yetistirilen Japon bildircinlarin (Coturnix coturnix japonca) canli agirliklarina ait kalitim dereceleri ile genetik ve fenotipik korelasyonlarinin sansa bagli regresyon modeliyle belirlenmesi amaclanmistir. Arastirmada cikis, 1., 2., 3., 4., 5. ve 6. haftaya ait canli agirlik ortalamalari sirasiyla 8.21, 24.83, 66.41, 107.54, 145.00, 173.49 ve 190.98 g olarak bulunmustur. Ayrica, yapilan inceleme sonunda dorduncu haftadan itibaren canli agirliklarin cinsiyet tarafindan onemli derecede etkilendigi saptanmistir. Calismada yer alan donemlerde canli agirliga ait kalitim dereceleri 0.011, 0.105, 0.291, 0.413, 0.482, 0.518 ve 0.532 olarak tahmin edilmistir. En yuksek genetik korelasyon (0.980) 1. ve 2. ile 2. ve 3.haftalar arasinda bulunmus, genetik korelasyon tahminleri fenotipik korelasyonlardan daha yuksek olmustur.
