Abstract

Li/BCX (bromine chloride in thionyl chloride) primary cells have been qualified for flight aboard the space shuttle for over fifteen years. These cells provide high energy density while maintaining an excellent safety record. Recently, changes to the electrolyte have resulted in an improved Li/BCX II system with a lower self-discharge rate. The use of low molarity electrolytes in programs unique to NASA have improved the safety hazards tolerance of these cells while maintaining or increasing their energy density.

Abstract

Stomach (gastric) cancer is now being detected at an earlier stage as a result of improved diagnostic techniques and mass screening programs. Five-year survival for early gastric cancer has improved from 60 percent to 90 percent, but recurrence remains a problem. Early gastric cancer is currently defined as cancer that has invaded only the mucosa or submucosa; this definition does not consider whether or not the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. A study was undertaken of 247 patients with early gastric cancer to determine the effectiveness of surgery and the influence of metastasis (spread) to the lymph nodes. Radical surgery with extensive removal of the lymph nodes was performed on 245 of these patients. The overall five-year survival rate for the group was 94.4 percent. Patients with submucosal invasion had a significantly lower survival rate than did those with only mucosal invasion (90 percent compared with 100 percent). The five-year survival rate for the 34 patients with lymph node metastasis was only 73.2 percent. Lymph node metastasis was more common among patients with submucosal cancer invasion. These findings indicate that both lymph node metastasis and submucosal cancer invasion influence the recurrence and affected the prognosis of patients with early gastric cancer. Because the exact amount of cancer invasion is not known prior to surgery, it is suggested that patients with early gastric cancer undergo radical surgery with complete removal of the first and second group of lymph nodes. 23. Manufacture and evaluation of Li/BCX DD cells

Abstract

This project is divided into four main tasks: cell manufacture, acceptance, and lot certification of cells, performance testing of cells, and abuse testing of cells. Lithium/bromine chloride in thionyl chloride (Li/BCX) 149 DD cells (PN 3B2085-XA) were built according to the provisions of Electrochem Industries Quality Plan 17096. Acceptance and lot certification testing was performed according to NASA JSC Document EP5-83-025, Revision B. Acceptance testing included open circuit and load voltage check, visual examination, size and weight measurements, and high temperature exposure. Lot certification tests were performed for capacity performance and for performance under conditions of thermal and electrical abuse. These tests included 149 C exposure, capacity discharge, fuse check, high temperature exposure, high rate discharge, short circuit, vibration, and overdischarge testing. A quantity of 200 cells was delivered to Johnson Space Center for life test evaluation. A parametric evaluation of the capacity discharge of Li/BCX DD cells was performed over a variety of temperatures and discharge rates. This testing served to map the performance capability of the cell. Tests were also performed over a variety of electrical and thermal abuse conditions. Abuse tests included short circuit, charging, overdischarge, high temperature exposure, shock, and vibration.

24. Low temperature performance of lithium/silver vanadium oxide cells

Abstract

Lithium/silver vanadium oxide cells for low temperature applications have been developed. Prismatic and spirally wound AA cells were tested under constant load discharge of 0.3 to 1.8 amps or pulse discharge of 0.225 or 1.0 amps at temperatures from -40 to 25 C. At -40 C with current densities of 2.5 mA/cm2, 23 percent of theoretical capacity was achieved under constant load discharge and 40 percent of theoretical capacity was achieved under pulse test. Self-discharge estimates of 0.7 percent per year at 25 C were obtained from microcalorimetry. Preliminary safety testing of the cells revealed no violent performance under short circuit or crush tests.

Abstract

International audience; Formation mechanism of emulsification is being studied by using “electrocapillarity” which had been once developed to study the structure of "electrical-double layer”. First the characteristics of electrocapillary curve of KCl aqueous solution/Hg system used for the cold model have been investigated to understand the ionic structure near the interface in comparison with the case of real (liquid CaO-SiO2-Al2O3/liquid steel) system. Then the emulsification phenomena at the meniscus (the interface) with and without imposing the electric potential have been observed by using a high speed camera. Finally the mechanisms of newly found phenomena have been discussed by taking account of the theory of electrocaoillarity.

Abstract

MIB-1 is a cell proliferation marker and has previously been investigated as a diagnostic or prognostic indicator of malignancy. Previous studies have investigated MIB-1 index and clinicopathological factors in relation to prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer, with conflicting results. The aim of this study is to assess the prognostic significance ofMIB-1 index in patients with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. A total of 78 patients who underwent R0-esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were enrolled in this study. Preoperatively, 29 patients underwent chemotherapy, six underwent chemoradiotherapy, and the remaining did not undergo any preoperative therapy. The MIB-1 labeling index was reported by counting 500 tumor cells in the hot spots of nuclear labeling. Correlations between MIB-1 index, clinicopathological factors, and relapse-free survival (RFS) were investigated. The mean MIB-1 index was 39.3 ± 21.0 (range: 0–91.3). There was no significant correlation between clinicopathological factors and MIB-1 index in the study patients, irrespective of whether they underwent preoperative therapy. Univariate analysis revealed no significant association between MIB-1 index and RFS. However, depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis and stage, all showed a significant correlation to RFS. Multivariate analysis of RFS revealed that stage was the only significant factor. Conversely,MIB-1 index was not significantly related to RFS (p = 0.41). In conclusion, MIB-1 index is unlikely to be a significant prognostic indicator for esophageal cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A broad range of subcomponents, such as normal-incidence polarizers, phase shifters, polarization control coatings for corner-cube fold prisms, variable laser output couplers, and superior antireflection (AR) coatings for birefringent crystals can be considered. When developed, this technology will provide the designer of optical coatings with degrees of freedom not available with homogeneous coatings. As a consequence, the number of optical components required to perform a specified function can, in many instances, be reduced, thereby improving manufacturability and reducing size, weight, reliability and cost.
