Surface structures of iron–phosphate glasses were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cr2O3, CoO, and Al2O3 were introduced to the glass by the replacement of a part of Fe2O3, and the simulated fission products are also added. The obtained glasses showed high chemical durabilities by MCC-1 test. In situ high-temperature and room-temperature XPS measurements were conducted on the polished sample surfaces and also those after 1-week chemical durability test. Unique trends were observed in XPS spectra on heating and after the chemical durability test, respectively. Nature of the glass surface of iron–phosphate glasses was explained from the point of view of surface energy, and the origin of high chemical durability and the effect of chromium ions were discussed based on the changes on surface composition and valence states of transition-metal ions.

成人鼠径ヘルニアに対するmesh plug法の再発についてretrospectiveに検討した．対象は2000年1月から2006年8月の間にmesh plug法で修復が行われ追跡調査可能であった成人鼠径ヘルニア346例（外鼠径ヘルニア272病変，内鼠径ヘルニア115病変）で，年齢21-87（中央値，65）歳，男女比315:31であった．再発4例5病変（1.3％）は全例男性で，年齢61-77（中央値，69）歳，再発までの期間は10-78（中央値，17）カ月で，外鼠径ヘルニア2病変（0.7％），内鼠径ヘルニア3病変（2.6％）であった．再手術の所見としてonlay patchの移動や変形が3病変，plugの逸脱が1病変，onlay patchの移動およびplugの逸脱が1病変に認められた．再手術ではLichtenstein法を2病変にmesh plug法を3病変に施行した．われわれが行ったmesh plug法の再発率は許容範囲であるが，plugとonlay patchの確実な固定が再発率をさらに低下させ得ると思われた．

As part of ongoing research and development of nuclear waste disposal techniques suitable for the pyrochemical processing system [1], iron-phosphate glass was examined as an alternative waste form for high level waste generated from the electro-refining process [2]. To enhance the waste element content in the glass matrix and improve the durability of the waste form, optimization experiments of the glass composition were performed, and the effects of other additional transition metal oxides were determined. From the surface analysis of iron phosphate glass, a leaching mechanism was assumed for various elements contained in the glass matrix. We have selected suitable a glass composition for the treatment of radioactive waste generated from the spent electrolytes of pyrochemical processing.Copyright © 2014 by ASME

Photoreaction dynamics of 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)propionic acid (ketoprofen, KP), one of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, with histidine in a phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.4) was investigated with the laser flash photolysis. The deprotonated form of KP (KP - ) was decarboxylated via UV laser excitation to form a carbanion. It was found that histidine accelerates the protonation reaction of the carbanion to 3-ethylben-zophenone ketyl biradical (3-EBPH) for the first time. The experimental results of the photoreaction of KP with alanine as well as the photoreaction of KP with 4-methylimidazole (a part of the side chain of histidine) in methanol, clearly showed that the protonated form of histidine is a key species for the protonation reaction of the carbanion. These series of the initial reactions should result in the occurrence of photosensitization in vivo. The reaction mechanism was discussed in detail.
