Abstract

We study a qubit-oscillator system, with a time-dependent coupling coefficient, and present a scheme for generating entangled Schr\"odinger-cat states with large mean photon numbers and also a scheme that protects the cat states against dephasing caused by the nonlinearity in the system. We focus on the case where the qubit frequency is small compared to the oscillator frequency. We first present the exact quantum state evolution in the limit of infinitesimal qubit frequency. We then analyze the first-order effect of the nonzero qubit frequency. Our scheme works for a wide range of coupling strength values, including the recently achieved deep-strong-coupling regime., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

2. Performance gain of displacement receiver with optimized prior probability

Abstract

We numerically study the performance of the displacement based quantum receiver for the discrimination of weak 3- and 4-phase-shift keyed (PSK) coherent state signals. We show that due to the nontrivial asymmetry of the receiver structure, optimization of the prior probability increases the mutual information and achieves sub-shot-noise limit discrimination. Moreover, we estimate the cutoff rate for a 4-PSK signal and confirm that the prior probability optimization shortens the code length for a given decoding error criterion. Such consideration for the asymmetric channel matrix is essential in a study of the compassable quantum receiver.

5. Photon number squeezing of ultra-broadband laser pulses generated by microstructure fibers

Abstract

To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of photon number squeezing by spectral filtering for ultra-broadband light generated by microstructure fibers at 800 nm. A maximum squeezing of 4.6 dB is observed, corresponding to 10.3 dB after correcting for detection losses. We numerically analyzed the quantum dynamics of ultrashort laser pulse propagation through optical fibers by solving a nonlinear quantum Schrodinger equation that included Raman scattering, especially for the quantum correlation of photon number fluctuation among frequency modes in broadband pulses., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Quantum information theory predicts that when the transmission resource is doubled in quantum channels, the amount of information transmitted can be increased more than twice by quantum channel coding technique, whereas the increase is at most twice in classical information theory. This remarkable feature, the superadditive quantum coding gain, can be implemented by appropriate choices of code words and corresponding quantum decoding which requires a collective quantum measurement. Recently, the first experimental demonstration was reported [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 167906 (2003)]. The purpose of this paper is to describe our experiment in detail. Particularly, a design strategy of quantum collective decoding in physical quantum circuits is emphasized. We also address the practical implication of the gain on communication performance by introducing the quantum-classical hybrid coding scheme. We show how the superadditive quantum coding gain, even in a small code length, can boost the communication performance of conventional coding technique., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

We report an experimental demonstration of Schumacher's quantum noiseless coding theorem. Our experiment employs a sequence of single photons each of which represents three qubits. We initially prepare each photon in one of a set of 8 non-orthogonal codeword states corresponding to the value of a block of three binary letters. We use quantum coding to compress this quantum data into a two-qubit quantum channel and then uncompress the two-qubit channel to restore the original data with a fidelity approaching the theoretical limit., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

24. Response to clobazam in continuous spike-wave during sleep

Abstract

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of clobazam treatment in reducing epileptiform discharges and modifying neuropsychological function in continuous spike-wave during slow wave sleep. METHOD: We performed a prospective clinical trial in patients with continuous spike-wave during sleep aged 4 to 10 years. Patients underwent neuropsychological assessment and overnight electroencephalographic monitoring before treatment, and subsequent repeat assessment and overnight electroencephalographic monitoring 3 months after treatment. Treatment consisted of 1mg/kg clobazam up to a maximum dose of 30mg during the first night, followed by 0.5mg/kg nightly for 3 months. RESULTS: Nine patients completed the study and had pre- and post-neuropsychological evaluation. There was a qualitative reduction in median (p(25) -p(75) ) spike percentage after 3 months (72.2 [68.0-75.8] vs 32.7 [4.7-81.7]). There were no marked changes in median (p(25) -p(75) ) IQ comparing pre- and post-clobazam treatment (80.0 [74.0-88.0] vs 80.0 [67.0-89.0]). There was a qualitative increase in Verbal IQ (83.0 [69.0-92.0] vs 95.0 [83.0-99.0]) and a qualitative decrease in Non-verbal IQ (84.0 [74.0-87.0] vs 71.0 [60.0-84.0]). INTERPRETATION: Qualitative improvements in epileptiform activity and cognition occurred in patients treated with clobazam for 3 months and the relationship between epileptiform activity and cognitive outcome should be studied in larger studies. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: Verbal IQ in patients with continuous spike-wave during sleep improved following short-term treatment with clobazam. Other neuropsychological improvements were observed, but varied by patient. Cognitive improvement was observed despite some worsening of epileptiform discharges.

Abstract

Chronic moderate exercise has been reported to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines. To analyze the molecular mechanisms by which training exerts these effects, the epigenetic influences of age and exercise on the ASC gene, which is responsible for IL-1 beta and IL-18 secretion, were investigated by ASC gene methylation. Further, the relationship between carcinogenesis and exercise, and methylation of the p15 tumor suppressive gene was also analyzed. High-intensity interval walking exercise, consisting of 3 min low-intensity walking at 40% of peak aerobic capacity followed by a 3 min high-intensity walking period above 70% of peak aerobic capacity, was continued for 6 months. Peripheral blood DNA extracts from young control (n = 34), older control (n = 153), and older exercise (n = 230) groups were then analyzed by pyrosequencing for DNA methylation. Methylation of ASC decreased significantly with age (young control vs. older control, p < 0.01), which is indicative of an age-dependent increase in ASC expression. Compared to the older control group, the degree of ASC methylation was higher in the older exercise group (older control vs. older exercise: p < 0.01), and presumably lower ASC expression. Neither exercise nor age affected the methylation of the p15. In summary, chronic moderate exercise appears to attenuate the age-dependent decrease in ASC methylation, implying suppression of excess pro-inflammatory cytokines through reduction of ASC expression., Article, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SPORTS MEDICINE. 31(9):671-675 (2010)

Abstract

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a near-optimal discrimination scheme for the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) protocol. We show in theory that the performance of our hybrid scheme is superior to the standard scheme—heterodyne detection—for all signal amplitudes and underpin the predictions with our experimental results. Furthermore, our scheme provides hitherto the best performance in the domain of highly attenuated signals. The discrimination is composed of a quadrature measurement, a conditional displacement and a threshold detector.

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate a new measurement scheme for the discrimination of two coherent states. The measurement scheme is based on a displacement operation followed by a photon-number-resolving detector, and we show that it outperforms the standard homodyne detector which we, in addition, prove to be optimal within all Gaussian operations including conditional dynamics. We also show that the non-Gaussian detector is superior to the homodyne detector in a continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme.
