3. Positron potential and wavefunction in LaFeAsO

Abstract

We report calculations of the positron potential and wavefunction in LaFeAsO. These calculations show that the positron wavefunction does sample the entire unit cell although it is largest in the interstices of the La layer adjacent to As atoms. The implication is that angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) is a viable probe of the Fermi surfaces in this material. The results also apply to positive muons, and indicate that these will be localized in the La layer adjacent to As.

We investigate the bonding of H in O vacancies of ZnO using density functional calculations. We find that H is anionic and does not form multicenter bonds with Zn in this compound.

Abstract

Understanding the evolution and role of nanoscale polar structures during polarization rotation in relaxor ferroelectrics is a long-standing challenge in materials science and condensed-matter physics. These nanoscale polar structures are characterized by polar nanodomains, which are believed to play a key role in enabling the large susceptibilities of relaxors. Using epitaxial strain, we stabilize the intermediate step during polarization rotation in epitaxial films of a prototypical relaxor and study the co-evolution of polarization and polar nanodomains. Our multimodal approach allows for a detailed examination of correlations between polarization and polar nanodomains; illuminates the effect of local chemistry, strain and electric field on their co-evolution; and reveals the underappreciated role of strain in enabling the large electromechanical coupling in relaxors. As the strain increases, the competition between chemistry-driven disorder and strain-driven order of the polar units intensifies, which is manifested in the coexistence of inclined and elongated polar nanodomains in the intermediate step of polarization rotation. Our findings establish that structural transitions between polar nanodomain configurations underpins the polarization rotation and large electromechanical coupling of relaxors.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine the configuration of dislocations in lateral overgrowth GaN films. Transmission electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence were used to investigate the microstructure of sublimation lateral overgrowth GaN. Results demonstrate that the dislocations also affect the yellow emission and not just the band edge emission. The dislocations were also shown to propagate laterally in the overgrowth region.

Abstract

A soft-x-ray projection lithography system is developed by the use of multilayer mirrors. To determine the feasibility of a high throughput and a large exposure area, we developed a reduction system that consists of two-aspherical-mirror optics. The figure errors of aspherical mirrors are evaluated by a laser interferometer. The rms aspherical figure errors of concave and convex mirrors are 8.8 and 2.0 nm, respectively, which are not enough to yield a resolution of 0.1 micrometer. The reduction optics is constructed by adjusting the mirror position to compensate for aberrations, and some trial replications are performed. An exposure area of larger than 10 mm X 0.6 mm with a fine pattern of less than a quarter micrometer is achieved.
