Abstract Applying lattice strain to thin films, a critical factor to tailor their properties such as stabilizing a structural phase unstable at ambient pressure, generally necessitates heteroepitaxial growth to control the lattice mismatch with substrate. Therefore, while homoepitaxy, the growth of thin film on a substrate made of the same material, is a useful method to fabricate high‐quality thin films, its application to studying strain‐induced structural phases is limited. Contrary to this general belief, here the quasi‐homoepitaxial growth of Cs and Rb thin films is reported with substantial in‐plane compressive strain. This is achieved by utilizing the alkali‐metal layer existing in bulk crystal of kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = Cs and Rb) as a structural template. The angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal the formation of metallic quantum well states and notable thickness‐dependent quasiparticle lifetime. Comparison with density functional theory calculations suggests that the obtained thin films crystalize in the face‐centered cubic structure, which is typically stable only under high pressure in bulk crystals. These findings provide a useful approach for synthesizing highly strained thin films by quasi‐homoepitaxy, and pave the way for investigating many‐body interactions in Fermi liquids with tunable dimensionality.

IntroductionThe number of patients with chronic kidney disease is increasing worldwide; previous studies have suggested that advanced practice nurses, including nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, with expert practice skills can provide high-quality care and solve complex healthcare problems. In general, nurse practitioners are generalist nurses who work as autonomous clinicians with whole personal care. Clinical nurse specialists, in contrast, are nurses with advanced nursing knowledge and skills for individuals or specific populations. Their roles are independent and different; however, similarities exist in their role in potentially improving healthcare outcomes. Although two previous studies described the role of nephrology nurse practitioners, they were systematic reviews, and their outcomes were limited. To clarify the overall aspect of advanced practice nurses' role, it is necessary to extract the studies illustrating advanced practice nurses' practices for patients with chronic kidney disease.ObjectiveThis study aims to map the literature describing the role of advanced practice nurses in improving healthcare outcomes for patients with chronic kidney disease.Materials and methodsThis scoping review will be conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping review. Online databases will be searched across MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science. Only studies published in English will be included, and no date limit will be set. Chronic kidney disease, renal replacement therapy, and advanced practice nurses as keywords and related search terms will be used. Two independent reviewers will screen the title and abstract/full-text; in case of discrepancy, a third reviewer will make the final decision. The results will be extracted and presented following the review question concerning the study characteristics, patients' characteristics, condition of chronic kidney disease, and role of advanced practice nurses.

Abstract A current key challenge in 2D materials is the realization of emergent quantum phenomena in hetero structures via controlling the moiré potential created by the periodicity mismatch between adjacent layers, as highlighted by the discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene. Generally, the lattice structure of the original host material remains unchanged even after the moiré superlattice is formed. However, much less attention is paid for the possibility that the moiré potential can also modify the original crystal structure itself. Here, it is demonstrated that octahedral MoTe2 which is unstable in bulk is stabilized in a commensurate MoTe2/graphene hetero‐bilayer due to the moiré potential created between the two layers. It is found that the reconstruction of electronic states via the moiré potential is responsible for this stabilization, as evidenced by the energy‐gap opening at the Fermi level observed by angle‐resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The present results provide a fresh approach to realize novel 2D quantum phases by utilizing the moiré potential.

Kagome metals are interesting for the coexistence of chiral charge density wave and superconductivity. Here, the structural distortion responsible for the charge density wave in KV3Sb5 is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, providing microscopic insight into the charge density wave and superconducting mechanisms.

Abstract Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) offer an excellent opportunity to realize outstanding physical properties distinct from those of topological insulators. Since TDSs verified so far have their own problems such as high reactivity in the atmosphere and difficulty in controlling topological phases via chemical substitution, it is highly desirable to find a new material platform of TDSs. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles band-structure calculations, we show that ternary compound BaMg2Bi2 is a TDS with a simple Dirac-band crossing around the Brillouin-zone center protected by the C3 symmetry of crystal. We also found that isostructural SrMg2Bi2 is an ordinary insulator characterized by the absence of band inversion due to the reduction of spin–orbit coupling. Thus, XMg2Bi2 (X = Sr, Ba, etc.) serves as a useful platform to study the interplay among crystal symmetry, spin–orbit coupling, and topological phase transition around the TDS phase.

Kagome metals AV_{3}Sb_{5} (A=K, Rb, and Cs) exhibit a unique superconducting ground state coexisting with charge-density wave (CDW), whereas how these characteristics are affected by carrier doping remains unexplored because of the lack of an efficient carrier-doping method. Here we report successful electron doping to CsV_{3}Sb_{5} by Cs dosing, as visualized by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found that the electron doping with Cs dosing proceeds in an orbital-selective way, as characterized by a marked increase in electron filling of the Sb 5p_{z} and V 3d_{xz/yz} bands as opposed to the relatively insensitive nature of the V 3d_{xy/x^{2}-y^{2}} bands. By monitoring the temperature evolution of the CDW gap around the M[over ¯] point, we found that the CDW can be completely killed by Cs dosing while keeping the saddle point with the V 3d_{xy/x^{2}-y^{2}} character almost pinned at the Fermi level. The present result suggests a crucial role of multiorbital effect to the occurrence of CDW and provides an important step toward manipulating the CDW and superconductivity in AV_{3}Sb_{5}.

Development of liver-targeted cell therapies, such as hepatocyte transplantation and bioartificial livers, requires a large amount of functional hepatocytes as needed. To achieve this development, establishing an excellent cryopreservation method of hepatocytes is an extremely important issue. Therefore, we performed a comparative review of cryoprotective effects of various cryopreservation solutions using primarily isolated porcine hepatocytes. Porcine hepatocytes were isolated with a four-step dispase and collagenase perfusion method. The obtained hepatocytes with the initial viabilities of 76%, 84%, and 96% were assigned to the following four groups for cryopreservation at −80°C: Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) + 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) + 12% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (group A), University of Wisconsin (UW) solution + 12% DMSO (group B), Cell Banker 1 (group C), and Cell Banker 2 (group D). The hepatocytes in each group were thawed at 3 days, 10 days, and 5 months of cryopreservation and subjected to comparative analyses, including viability, plating efficiency, LDH release, ammonia removal test, and lentiviral gene transfer. These parameters were the most favorable in the hepatocytes cryopreserved with UW solution. Approximately 5% of thawed cryopreserved porcine hepatocytes expressed LacZ activity after lentiviral transduction. Intrasplenic transplantation of UW solution-cryopreserved hepatocytes improved the survival of rats treated with D-galactosamine. UW solution maintained the functions of cryopreserved porcine hepatocytes.

Normal human hepatocytes are an ideal source of liver-targeted cell therapies, such as hepatocyte transplantation and bioartificial livers, but availability of human donor livers for liver cell isolation is severely limited. To effectively utilize scarce donor organs for cell therapies, it is of extreme importance to establish an efficient isolation technique and an effective cold preservation solution for transportation of isolated cells. A lateral segment of the liver was surgically resected from pigs weighing 10 kg and a four-step collagenase and dispase digestion was conducted. Isolated hepatocytes were subjected to 8-h cold storage on ice. The following preservation solutions were tested: 1) University of Wisconsin (UW) solution, 2) UW with 100 μg/ml of ascorbic acid-2 glucoside (AA2G), 3) 100% fetal bovine serum (FBS), and 4) Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) supplemented with 100% FBS. The mean viability of porcine hepatocytes was 95.5 ± 2.5% when isolated in three independent experiments. Viability, plating efficiency, membrane stability, and ammonia metabolic capacity of cold-preserved hepatocytes were significantly better maintained by the use of UW solution. When AA2G (100 μg/ml) was combined with UW solution, such parameters were further improved. It was explained by inhibition of caspase-3 activation and retention of ATP at high levels of hepatocytes preserved with UW solution containing AA2G. The present work demonstrates that a combination of UW solution with AA2G (100 μg/ml) would be a useful cold preservation means for the development of cell therapies.

Because human hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) perform a crucial role in the progress of hepatic fibrosis, it is of great value to establish an immortalized human cell line that exhibits HSC characteristics and grows well in tissue cultures for the development of antifibrotic therapies. Thus, we engineered an immortalized human hepatic stellate cell (HSC) line TWNT-4 by retrovirally inducing human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) into LI 90 cells established from a human liver mesenchymal tumor. Parental LI 90 entered replicative senescence, whereas TWNT-4 showed telomerase activity and proliferated for more than population doubling level (PDL) 200 without any crisis. TWNT-4 expressed platelet-derived growth factor-β receptor (PDGF-βR), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and type I collagen (α1) and was considered to be an activated form of HSCs. Treatment of TWNT-4 cells with either 100 U/ml of IFN-γ or 1 ng/ml of rapamycin (Rapa) for 14 days led to lower expression of type I collagen (α1) at RNA and protein levels. Exposure of TWNT-4 cells to both of IFN-γ (10 U/ml) and Rapa (0.1 ng/ml) for 14 days effectively decreased the expression of type I collagen (α1), PDGF-βR, and α-SMA expression and suppressed TGF-β1 secretion of TWNT-4 cells. We successfully induced apoptosis by transducing TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) into TWNT-4 cells using adenovirus vectors Ad/GT-TRAIL and Ad/PGK-GV-17. These findings suggested that immortalized activated HSC line TWNT-4 would be a useful means to develop antifibrotic therapies.

We previously constructed an immortal human hepatocyte line NKNT-3 with a simian virus 40 T antigen (SV40T) to develop cell-based biological therapies. p21 is a molecule that regulates the transition from the G 1 phase to the S phase of the cell cycle. Investigators have demonstrated that overexpression of p21 induces differentiation in various cell lines. In the current study we examined the effect of p21 on differentiated phenotypes of SV40T-immortalized NKNT-3 cells. A replication-deficient adenovirus vector expressing a human wild-type p21 cDNA under the control of the CMV promoter (Ad5CMVp21) and a human wild-type p21 protein fused to the protein transduction domain from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) TAT protein (TAT/p21) were utilized to achieve efficient delivery of p21 into NKNT-3 cells. Morphological alterations, cell cycle progression, and expression of albumin and p-450 associated enzymes (CYPs) 3A4 and 2C9 were evaluated in NKNT-3 cells treated with Ad5CMVp21 and TAT/p21. Efficient adenovirus-based p21 transfer and TAT-mediated p21 protein delivery were confirmed in NKNT-3 cells in an immuno-fluorescence study and Western blotting analysis. Transduction of NKNT-3 cells with p21 predominantly arrested the cell cycle at the G 1 checkpoint, resulting in differentiated hepatic phenotypes in morphology and improvement in protein expression of albumin, CYP 3A4, and CYP C29. We here show that exogenous expression of p21 augments cellular differentiation in immortalized human NKNT-3 cells.

In recent years, many countries have adopted universal health coverage (UHC) as a national aspiration. In response to increasing demand for a systematic assessment of global experiences with UHC, the Government of Japan and the World Bank collaborated on a 2-year multicountry research programme to analyse the processes of moving towards UHC. The programme included 11 countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Peru, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam), representing diverse geographical, economic, and historical contexts. The study identified common challenges and opportunities and useful insights for how to move towards UHC. The study showed that UHC is a complex process, fraught with challenges, many possible pathways, and various pitfalls--but is also feasible and achievable. Movement towards UHC is a long-term policy engagement that needs both technical knowledge and political know-how. Technical solutions need to be accompanied by pragmatic and innovative strategies that address the national political economy context., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

The Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa was unprecedented in both its scale and impact. Out of this human calamity has come renewed attention to global health security--its definition, meaning, and the practical implications for programmes and policy. For example, how does a government begin to strengthen its core public health capacities, as demanded by the International Health Regulations? What counts as a global health security concern? In the context of the governance of global health, including WHO reform, it will be important to distil lessons learned from the Ebola outbreak. The Lancet invited a group of respected global health practitioners to reflect on these lessons, to explore the idea of global health security, and to offer suggestions for next steps. Their contributions describe some of the major threats to individual and collective human health, as well as the values and recommendations that should be considered to counteract such threats in the future. Japan's premier health accomplishment in the past 50 years has been the achievement of good population health at low cost and increased equity between different population groups. The development of Japan's policies for universal coverage are similar to the policy debates that many countries are having in their own contexts. The financial sustainability of Japan's universal coverage is under threat from demographic, economic, and political factors. Furthermore, a series of crises-both natural and nuclear-after the magnitude 9·0 Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, has shaken up the entire Japanese social system that was developed and built after World War 2, and shown existing structural problems in the Japanese health system. Here, we propose four major reforms to assure the sustainability and equity of Japan's health accomplishments in the past 50 years-implement a human-security value-based reform; redefine the role of the central and local governments; improve the quality of health care; and commit to global health. Over the past 50 years, Japan has successfully developed and maintained an increasingly equitable system of universal health coverage in addition to achieving the world's highest life expectancy and one of the lowest infant mortality rates. Against this backdrop, Japan is potentially in a position to become a leading advocate for and supporter of global health. Nevertheless, Japan's engagement with global health has not been outstanding relative to its substantial potential, in part because of government fragmentation, a weak civil society, and lack of transparency and assessment. Japan's development assistance for health, from both governmental and non-governmental sectors, has remained low and Japanese global health leadership has been weak. New challenges arising from changes in governance and global and domestic health needs, including the recent Great East Japan Earthquake, now provide Japan with an opportunity to review past approaches to health policy and develop a new strategy for addressing global and national health. The fragmented functioning of the government with regards to global health policy needs to be reconfigured and should be accompanied by further financial commitment to global health priorities, innovative non-governmental sector initiatives, increased research capacity, and investments in good leadership development as witnessed at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit. Should this strategy development and commitment be achieved, Japan has the potential to make substantial contributions to the health of the world as many countries move toward universal coverage and as Japan itself faces the challenge of maintaining its own health system., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The 2008 G8 summit in Toyako, Japan, produced a strong commitment for collective action to strengthen health systems in developing countries, indicating Japan's leadership on, and the G8's increasing engagement with, global health policy. This paper describes the context for the G8's role in global health architecture and analyses three key components-financing, information, and the health workforce-that affect the performance of health systems. We propose recommendations for actions by G8 leaders to strengthen health systems by making the most effective use of existing resources and increasing available resources. We recommend increased attention by G8 leaders to country capacity and country ownership in policy making and implementation. The G8 should also implement a yearly review for actions in this area, so that changes in health-system performance can be monitored and better understood.

A case of intracranial fibrous xanthoma (xanthofibroma) is reported. Intracranial fibrous xanthoma in infancy under the age of 1 year is extremely rare. This patient was a 8-month-old boy with a history of convulsive seizure. He had a previously known chest wall tumor which was diagnosed as fibrous xanthoma of the skin. Plain CT scan revealed a well defined high density area in the left temporal lobe. The area was well enhanced with contrast media. At operation, it was found that the tumor did not attach to dura mater and was almost well demarcated. Total removal of the tumor was performed. The patient has been doing well for these 6 months following craniotomy, with no sings of recurrence and no neurological deficits. Histologically, the tumor was composed of fibroblastic cells and foamy phagocytic cells in storiform pattern. Some multinucleated giant cells were found. Immunohistochemistry technique revealed that the tumor cells were negative for GFAP, positive for Vimentin, positive for S-100 protein and negative for EMA. Our studies support the diagnosis of intracranial fibrous xanthoma coexistent with the same tumor found in the subcutaneous space of the chest wall of a boy under 1 year of age. We regard it as a rare incidence. Differential diagnosis and the characteristics of fibrous xanthoma were discussed.

A case of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (Kepes) is reported. This patient was a 12-year-old boy with a history of convulsive seizure. Neurological examination on admission showed no abnormality. Plain CT scan revealed a well defined low density area with calcification in the right frontal lobe. A part of peripheral portion of low density area were well enhanced with contrast media. At operation, there was a cyst containing xanthochromic fluid in the right frontal lobe. A part of cyst well near the cerebral surface was reddish hard. Total removal of nodular tumor and subtotal removal of the cyst wall were performed. He has been doing well for these 3 years following craniotomy and has no deficit without CT evidence of recurrent tumor. Histologically the tumor cells displayed marked pleomorohism. However either necrosis or mitosis were not seen. Frequently these cells had vacuolated or foamy cytoplasm. There were many of the giant cells and multinucleated cells. In some area, these tumor cells were surrounded by a fine network of reticulin fibers. Electron microscopically the tumor cells were occasionally filled with glial filament and lipid granules were seen. Immunoperoxidase technique revealed GFAP in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. This case was considered to be pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma first proposed by Kepes.

A case of cervical intramedullary neurenteric cyst was reported. A 12-year-old girl was admitted with severe pain over the nape and shoulders, and weakness of all extremities. At the age of 4 years, she had suffered from the nape pain and paraparesis which, however, cleared later spontaneously. Neurological examination revealed evidences of presumptive cervical intramedullary lesion, and myelography showed a complete block at the third cervical level accordingly. Surgical exploration through C3-C5 laminectomy disclosed an intramedullary cyst situated within the right half of the cord. The cyst was removed except for its upper and lower apices. Excellent clinical results followed the operation. The cyst was composed of collagen fibers with an inner epithelial lining, which consisted of single or pseudostratified layer of columnar, cuboidal or squamous cells. Cells were ciliated at some parts. The base of the epithelial cells rested upon the basement membrane. Nuclei were positioned near the base of the cells, to present a row. The cytoplasm in the majority of cells contained abundant mucin positive to PAS staining. Pathological diagnosis of neurenteric cyst was made on the basis of these histological findings. Usually intraspinal neurenteric cyst is located in the subarachnoid space and ventrally to the spinal cord. Neurenteric cyst appears histologically similar to ependymal cyst, though, in the latter the epithelial cells seldom contain mucin, and only in scanty amount, if any present. Embryogenesis during the third week of embryonic life was discussed in relation to the development of neurenteric cyst.
