Nano Imprint Lithography (NIL) is valued as a cost effective alternative to other Next Generation Lithography (NGL) choices, especially for memory device applications. In order to achieve an attractive Cost of Ownership (CoO), replicas are made from a master and those replicas are then used in the actual pattern transfer onto the device wafer. During the pattern transfer process from a template to a device wafer, droplets of imaging material are applied to the surface of the substrate, in the area where the imaging is to take place. The image to be transferred is then brought into direct contact with the imaging material, at which time it will spread between the two surfaces by means of capillary force, and the imaging material is then solidified through UV irradiation. As the template is pulled away, it leaves its image imprinted into the imaging material. Any resist adhering to the template will cause defects in subsequent imprints, hence such template contamination, so called resist plugs, must either be avoided or removed. This work focuses on the resist removal techniques employing ambient pressure plasma, and their benefit to improve throughput, i.e. CoO. In our studies, we found that resist removal efficiency is highly depending on the process gas mixture and the process temperature. This dry cleaning process has a good potential as an efficient in-line imprint mask cleaning system.

Intracranial lipomas are believed to be congenital malformations rather than true neoplasms, resulting from the abnormal differentiation of the meninx primitiva, the undifferentiated mesenchyme. We report here the surgical pathological features of a lipoma that was located on the cerebral surface of an abnormally formed fissure, and the underlying cortex of the middle temporal gyrus of a 20-year-old woman. The mass was composed of typical adipose tissue in which a large number of blood vessels were present. Thick connective tissue associated with the arachnoid membrane covered the cortical surface. The cortex exhibited a polymicrogyric configuration in which the cortical ribbon was abnormally undulated and excessively folded. Reelin-immunolabeled Cajal-Retzius-cell-like cells were observed frequently in the fused molecular layer. The cortical lamination underlying the molecular layer was poorly defined. Along the border between the connective tissue and cortical surface, there was a narrow zone in which the mesenchymal and neuronal tissues were intermingled, and where immunohistochemical and ultrastructural investigations disclosed disruption of the basal lamina, prominent astrocytosis, and abundant axonal and synaptic profiles. These findings suggest that focal disturbances in cerebral cortical development occur in association with the development of lipomas.

以前より舌切除後再建の機能については嚥下機能や構音機能について多施設で検討されてきた。今回我々は, 舌機能と共に非侵襲的な脳活動の画像化の新しい方法として数年前から始められた functional MRI (f-MRI) を用いて検討した。f-MRIは, 脳賦活時に静脈の deoxy-ヘモグロビンの絶対的・相対的含有量の低下に伴い, 賦活領域のMRIの信号強度が増すといった原理を応用したものである。嚥下機能は, T3・4症例では舌・喉頭運動が高度に障害されていた。構音機能は, 症例により様々であった。f-MRI検査では, 舌運動において, T3・4症例では健側の運動野のみの描出が認められ, T2症例では半切してあるにもかかわらず, 両側の描出が認められた。味覚についてはいずれの症例も健側のみの描出で, 中咽頭の味覚を反映していない結果であった。

The complex spike (CS) and simple spike (SS) activities of Purkinje cells in the rostral zone of the cerebellar flocculus were recorded in alert cats during optokinetic responses (OKR) elicited by a stimulus sequence consisting of a constant-speed visual pattern movement in one direction for 1 s and then in the opposite direction for 1 s. The quick-phase-free trials were selected. Ninety-eight cells were identified as rostral zone cells by the direction-selective CS activity that was modulated during vertical but not horizontal stimuli. In most of the majority population (88 cells), with an increasing CS firing rate during upward OKR and an increasing SS rate during downward OKR, the inverse dynamics approach was successful and the time course of the SS rate was reconstructed (mean coefficient of determination, 0.70 and 0.72 during upward and downward stimuli, respectively) by a linear weighted superposition of the eye acceleration, velocity, position, and constant terms, at a given time delay (mean 10 ms) from the unit response to the eye-movement response. Standard regression coefficient (SRC) analysis revealed that the contribution of the velocity term (mean SRC 0.98 for upward and 0.80 for downward) to regression was dominant over acceleration (mean SRC 0.018 and 0.058) and position (-0.14 and -0.12) terms. Based on the inverse dynamics theory, a previous paper reconstructed simple-spike (SS) firing rates of Purkinje cells in the cat's flocculus middle-zone by a linear-weighted summation of eye acceleration, velocity, and position during optokinetic response (OKR). The present study investigated the SS rates during combined optokinetic and vestibular stimuli of the cells recorded in the previous paper. During the sinusoidal vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) in the light (VORL) and in the dark (VORD) the firing modulation was small. During VOR suppression (VORS) by head and visual-pattern rotation in the same direction, the modulation was deep, with the peak coinciding roughly with peak ipsiversive head velocity. During VOR enhancement (VORE), the modulation was deep, with the peak coinciding roughly with peak contraversive head velocity. If we interpret these data in relation to eye and head movements, the cells in the cat were comparable to the horizontal-gaze-velocity Purkinje cells in the monkey that encode a linear summation of eye and head velocity signals. Alternatively, if we interpret the data on the basis of the inverse dynamics theory, the SS rates during VORL, VORS, and VORE were well-fitted by the OKR components of the movements (subtraction of VORD from VORL, VORS, and VORE eye movements, respectively), but not by the whole movements, using the coefficients calculated during OKR. It is concluded that the data are interpretable by both theories when the VOR gain (eye movement/head movement) is close to 1 and the firing is dominated by eye velocity information.

Sapovirus (SaV) is an important pathogen that causes acute gastroenteritis in humans. Human SaV is highly diverse genetically and is classified into multiple genogroups and genotypes. At present, there is no clear evidence for gastroenteritis cases caused by re-infection with SaV. We found that two individuals were sequentially infected with SaVs of two different genogroups and had gastroenteritis after each infection, although in one of the subsequent cases, both SaV and norovirus were detected. We also found a genetic shift in SaVs from gastroenteritis outpatients in the same geographical location. Our results suggest that protective immunity may be at least genogroup-specific for SaV.

Experiments were designed to clarify the role of the brain's organum vasculosum laminae terminalis (OVLT) in the development of fever in rabbits. Rectal and ear skin temperatures were recorded in conscious animals in which the OVLT had been electrolytically destroyed or in which the preoptic anterior hypothalamus (PO/AH) had been transected bilaterally. When the OVLT had been ablated the febrile responses to intravenous injection of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) or tumour necrosis factor alpha were significantly attenuated, while those to intracerebroventricular injection of IL-1 beta were not affected. Fever induced by intracerebroventricular injection of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was prolonged significantly. The febrile responses to intravenous injection of IL-1 beta and to intracerebroventricular injection of PGE2 were attenuated when the transection was located caudally to the anterior wall of the third ventricle and extended laterally more than about 3 mm in the ventricular wall. The results show that the OVLT region is a site through which signals to increase body temperature are transferred from the blood to the brain in rabbits.

Infectious acute gastroenteritis is an important public health problem worldwide. A total of 639 stool specimens were tested for the presence of diarrhea pathogens. The specimens were from outpatients with acute gastroenteritis who consulted the pediatric clinic in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, from June 2002 to December 2007. Of these, 421 (65.9%) were positive for diarrhea pathogens. Among them were norovirus (NoV) in 260 (61.8%), sapovirus (SaV) in 81 (19.2%), rotavirus in 49 (11.6%), adenovirus in 19 (4.5%), enterovirus in 13 (3.1%), astrovirus in 9 (2.1%), kobuvirus in 1 (0.2%), and bacterial pathogens in 11 (2.6%). Mixed infection (co-infection of viruses) was found in 22 (5.2%) of the 421 pathogen-positive stool samples. NoV was the most prevalent pathogen throughout the study period; however, the SaV detection rate was unexpectedly high and was found to be the secondary pathogen from 2005 to 2007. Genetic analysis of SaV with 81 strains demonstrated that SaV strains belonging to genogroup IV emerged in 2007, and dynamic genogroup changes occurred in a restricted geographic area. This study showed that SaV infection is not as rare as thought previously.

Management of hypothalamic hamartoma with intractable gelastic epilepsy remains controversial. We have used stereotactic thermocoagulation for treatment of hypothalamic hamartoma with intractable gelastic epilepsy since 1997. Herein, we review our experience in five cases to clarify the usefulness of this treatment. A total of five patients with hypothalamic hamartoma were treated by stereotactic thermocoagulation at our hospital during the period October 1997 through February 2004. In all patients, the hamartoma was less than 10mm in diameter and was located on the floor of the third ventricle with sessile attachment to the wall. To identify ictal onset, chronic intracranial electroencephalography was performed in three patients with the use of a depth electrode implanted in the hamartoma. Attempts were made to induce gelastic seizure by electrical stimulation of the hamartoma in three patients. After magnetic resonance imaging-guided targeting, radiofrequency thermocoagulation of the boundary between the hamartoma and normal hypothalamus was performed to achieve disconnection effects. Marked reductions in seizure frequency were obtained in all cases, with three patients becoming seizure-free after the procedure. No intraoperative complications occurred except in one patient who experienced acute and transient panidrosis with hot flushes during coagulation. Our results suggest that stereotactic thermocoagulation of hypothalamic hamartoma is an acceptable treatment option for patients with intractable gelastic seizures.

Electropermeabilization, or electroporation, has been used to deliver genes or drugs into the cytoplasm through micropores in the cell membrane caused by electric stimulation. The cytotoxic effect of a combination of anticancer agents with electric stimulation on rat C6 and human T98G glioma cells was examined in vitro. Electric pulses of 100 microsec square waves (eight cycles at 1 Hz) at various electric fields were delivered to C6 or T98G glioma cell suspensions in combination with several anticancer agents. Cell growth was evaluated 48-72 h after treatment. Measurement of cell lysis by electric stimulation was used to assess the optimum field strength for electroporation. Electric stimulation enhanced significantly the cytotoxicity of bleomycin to both C6 and T98G cells by more than 1000-fold using an electric field of 1750 V/cm for C6 cells and 1000 V/cm for T98G cells. The enhancement disappeared when bleomycin concentration was reduced to 100 pg/ml. The cytotoxicity of carboplatin was weakly but significantly enhanced by electric stimulation when a high dose of carboplatin was used. However, there was no enhancement of the cytotoxicity of nimustine hydrochloride (ACNU), etoposide, and vincristine. These results indicate that the combination of bleomycin and electroporation is the most potent candidate for electrochemotherapy in vivo.
