Abstract

A series of ester-linked tetracarboxylic dianhydrides containing multiple para-phenylene units (TA-pPhs) was synthesized to obtain novel modified polyimides, namely poly(ester imide)s (PEsIs). The flame retardancy and film toughness of PEsIs tended to deteriorate with the structural extension of the repeating units (or monomers) via ester groups. To identify the structural factors necessary for achieving the highest flame retardancy rank (UL-94, V-0), we systematically investigated the structure–property relationships of a series of TA-pPh-based PEsIs. Among them, a PEsI derived from para-quaterphenylene-containing TA-pPh (TA-DPQP) and p-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) exhibited the best property combination, featuring an extremely high glass transition temperature (Tg), very low linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), low water uptake (WA), ultralow linear coefficient of humidity (hygroscopic) expansion (CHE), unexpectedly high film toughness, and excellent flame retardancy (V-0 rank). Moreover, we examined the effects of substituents of TA-pPh and discussed the mode of action for the increased film toughness. This study also investigated the structure–property relationship for a series of PEsIs derived from isomeric naphthalene-containing tetracarboxylic dianhydrides. Some of the PEsIs obtained in this study, such as the TA-DPQP/p-PDA system, hold promise as novel high-temperature dielectric substrates for use in flexible printed circuits.

Abstract

Rubber-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a novel analytical method, was applied to quantitative analyses of crosslinking junctions and uncrosslinked pendant sulfidic groups for natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates. NR was vulcanized with two formulations: i.e., one including sulfur, ZnO, stearic acid and N-tert-butylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TBBS) as an accelerator and the other including sulfur, ZnO and stearic acid without the accelerator. The resulting NR vulcanizates were characterized by swelling methods and rubber-state NMR spectroscopy to determine crosslink density, number of sulfur atoms at crosslinking junctions and structure of crosslinking junctions, respectively. Small signals appearing in rubber-state 13C and 1H NMR spectra for the NR vulcanizates were assigned to crosslinking junctions, uncrosslinked pendant sulfidic groups and their neighboring groups by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. Based on the assignments, a proportion of the amount of CH linking to sulfur as the crosslinking junctions to total amount of CH linking to sulfur were estimated from intensities of the signals for the NR vulcanizates.

Abstract

1.2C–4Cr–4Mo–10W–3.5V–10Co–Fe high-speed steel (JIS SKH57; ISO HS10-4-3-10) is often manufactured via casting and forging. By applying powder metallurgy, the properties of the abovementioned material can be improved. In this study, the effects of sintering conditions on the formation of precipitates and pores are evaluated. Additionally, strength with and without hydrostatic pressure during sintering is evaluated via static bending and impact tests. Sintering via hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at 1463 K can effectively eliminate pores and prevent the coarsening of precipitates. Toughness and strength improved by 50% by applying HIP.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop an antibody to gallinacin-3 which is one of the antimicrobial peptides in chickens. The antibody was raised in rabbit using a synthetic peptide of gallinacin-3 (Gal-3), and purified through an affinity column. Specificity of antibody was examined by competitive ELISA using Gal-3-HRP and synthetic Gal-3, or the tissue peptides isolated from the uropygial gland and the uterus. Immunostaining was performed on sections of the trachea, uterus, vagina, cloacal gland and uropygial gland. In the competitive ELISA, co-incubation of Gal-3-HRP with Gal-3 and tissue peptides extracted from uropygialis and uterus caused a clear decline of optical density (A450) value in a dose dependent manner. The epithelial cells in the trachea, uterus, vagina, cloacal gland and uropygial gland stained positive using the prepared gallinacin-3 antibody. Sections incubated with antibody absorbed with Gal-3 (control staining) resulted in negative staining. These results suggest that the antibody to gallinacin-3 prepared in the current study is useful for immunocytochemical identification of gallinacin-3 in chickens. The current immunocytochemical results suggest the presence of gallinacin-3 in the epithelial cells of trachea, oviduct, cloacal gland and uropygialis.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In 2009, a pandemic (pdm) influenza A(H1N1) virus infection quickly circulated globally resulting in about 18,000 deaths around the world. In Japan, infected patients accounted for 16% of the total population. The possibility of human-to-human transmission of highly pathogenic novel influenza viruses is becoming a fear for human health and society. METHODOLOGY: To address the clinical need for rapid diagnosis, we have developed a new method, the "RT-SmartAmp assay", to rapidly detect the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus from patient swab samples. The RT-SmartAmp assay comprises both reverse transcriptase (RT) and isothermal DNA amplification reactions in one step, where RNA extraction and PCR reaction are not required. We used an exciton-controlled hybridization-sensitive fluorescent primer to specifically detect the HA segment of the 2009 pdm influenza A(H1N1) virus within 40 minutes without cross-reacting with the seasonal A(H1N1), A(H3N2), or B-type (Victoria) viruses. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We evaluated the RT-SmartAmp method in clinical research carried out in Japan during a pandemic period of October 2009 to January 2010. A total of 255 swab samples were collected from outpatients with influenza-like illness at three hospitals and eleven clinics located in the Tokyo and Chiba areas in Japan. The 2009 pdm influenza A(H1N1) virus was detected by the RT-SmartAmp assay, and the detection results were subsequently compared with data of current influenza diagnostic tests (lateral flow immuno-chromatographic tests) and viral genome sequence analysis. In conclusion, by the RT-SmartAmp assay we could detect the 2009 pdm influenza A(H1N1) virus in patients' swab samples even in early stages after the initial onset of influenza symptoms. Thus, the RT-SmartAmp assay is considered to provide a simple and practical tool to rapidly detect the 2009 pdm influenza A(H1N1) virus.

6. Inhibiting and Enhancing Effects on DNA Repair of Rare Metal Elements in Cultured Human Lymphoblastoid Cells

Abstract

Along with increasing relevance of rare earth (RE) elements in industrial technology, the risk of their environmental release and occupational exposure on human health is of concern. Although many toxicological studies were reported for REs, it is not known how they affect DNA repair. In this study, the effects on DNA repair of all RE ions except radioactive promethium (Pm) were studied. Human lymphoblastoid WTK1cells were irradiated to UV followed by 2h exposure to each RE with and without DNA repair inhibitor cytosine-1β-D- arabinofuranoside (araC), and then single strand breaks (SSBs) were detected by the comet assay. UV-induced pyrimidine dimers are removed by nucleotide excision repair (NER) which consists of recognition of the DNA lesion, excision of a 24–32 nucleotide stretch containing the lesion by dual incision of the damaged DNA strand on both sides, and re-synthesis of the resulting gap by DNA polymerase, and ligation of the nick. SSBs are generated in the incision step of nucleotide excision repair (NER) and disappear in the re-synthesis step of NER. Seven REs, Yb, Lu, Dy, Er, Sc, Pr, and Ce, enhanced comet positive response without araC but not with araC, suggesting that araC is antagonistic to the 7 REs. Since araC inhibits re-synthesis of NER, these seven REs would inhibit the re-synthesis step of NER. Six REs, Tm, Sm, Tb, Gd, Eu, and Y suppressed comet positive responses with and without araC, suggesting that they decreased comet assay detectable SSBs. Therefore, these 6 REs are considered to inhibit the incision step of NER. Only La decreased tail length without araC but increased with araC, suggesting that La increased comet assay detectable SSBs and that only La would enhance the incision step of NER. Neither Nd nor Ho affected tail length with or without araC.

7. Genotoxicity-Suppressing Effect of Sophora japonica L. Aqueous Extract

Abstract

The dry flower buds of Sophora japonica L. are used as a hemostatic agent in traditional Chinese medicine. In the comet assay, aqueous extracts of S. japonica decreased and increased the tail length significantly in cultured human lymphoblastoid WTK1 cells exposed to UV in the absence and presence of DNA repair inhibitors, respectively. The extract did not affect the tail length in methyl methanesulfonate-exposed cells. In the present study, the aqueous extract of the flower buds of S. japonica was separated by repeated column chromatography, yielding four types of flavonoid glycosides. Among them, only rutin, similar to the extract, decreased and increased the tail length significantly in WTK1 cells exposed to UV in the absence and presence of DNA repair inhibitors hydroxyurea (10 mM) and cytosine-1-β-D-arabinofuranoside (1.8 mM), respectively. The genotoxicity-suppressing effect of rutin was further studied using the micronucleus test. Rutin significantly decreased the frequency of micronucleated binucleate cells in UV-exposed WTK1 cells but did not affect this frequency in UV-exposed XPL3KA (Xeroderma pigmentosum group C) cells. These results suggest that the anti-genotoxic potential of rutin is due to an enhanced incision step of global genome repair (GGR) sub-pathways in nucleotide excision repair (NER). Herein, we show that S. japonica exhibits heretofore unknown anti-genotoxic potential against UV by enhancing the incision of GGR sub-pathways in NER, and that its anti-genotoxic component is rutin.

8. Successful management of segmental zoster paresis on the upper arm with temporally burst spinal cord stimulation

Abstract

Segmental zoster paresis (SZP) of the limbs is characterized by a focal, asymmetric neurogenic weakness that may occur in an extremity affected by herpes zoster (HZ). In this case report, we describe the case of a patient with SZP who presented with these problems and responded well to temporary spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and systematic rehabilitation. A 62-year-old female patient was referred for right upper limb pain, weakness, and insomnia due to pain. After completing the 14-day trial stimulation, the pain numerical rating scale of the patient in the right upper extremity decreased from 8/10 to 2/10. The Athens insomnia scale score decreased from 15/24 to 10/24. Furthermore, the grip strength of the right hands increased from 6.7 to 16.8 kg at discharge. We induced temporal SCS and rehabilitation of the right upper limb SZP and successfully reduced the pain. An in-depth understanding of the neurological complications secondary to HZ should be emphasized, with temporal SCS and rehabilitation expected to play a crucial role in the motor recovery of patients with SZP.

9. Establishment of Optimal Conditions to Extract Bioactive Substances from Gamazumi Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Abstract

The fruits of Gamazumi (Viburnum dilatatum THUNB) have been previously reported to suppress the adverse effects of oxidative stress in rats. To reduce time and cost, we attempted to establish optimal conditions for extracting bioactive components from Gamazumi fruits using supercritical carbon dioxide. To verify whether the conventional hexane extraction may be replaced by the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, component analysis results and antigenotoxic potential in mice were used to compare bioactivity of the supercritical carbon dioxide and hexane extracts. At the same extraction pressure, the extraction rate was maximized when supercritical carbon dioxide with a low temperature was used, and extraction efficiency was improved. GC/MS analysis revealed that vitamins E and stigmasterols were included in supercritical carbon dioxide and hexane extracts, and that no qualitative differences between supercritical carbon dioxide and hexane extracts were observed. The antigenotoxic potential of Gamazumi extracts was studied in mice exposed to cigarette smoke inhalation. Mice received single or 5 consecutive oral administrations of Gamazumi extracts at 0, 3, and 6 h prior to smoke inhalation. Although single administration decreased nuclei tail length in the stomach when both administration and the intervals of smoke inhalation were short, five consecutive administrations decreased tail length in the lung and stomach regardless of the interval. At short intervals, inhaled cigarette smoke and orally administered extracts may be simultaneously present in the gastric cavity, and direct reaction between cigarette smoke and extract is possible. The antioxidant activity of Gamazumi extracts may result in antigenotoxic potential. There were no differences in component analysis and antigenotoxic potential between supercritical carbon dioxide and hexane extracts of Gamazumi; thus, it is possible to replace the conventional hexane extraction with the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction.

Abstract

Takayasu arteritis results in a variety of vascular symptoms, and there are some cases in which progressive vascular lesions require surgical intervention. We present a case with ascending aortic aneurysm, right common carotid artery stenosis, left common carotid artery occlusion and left subclavian artery stenosis caused by Takayasu arteritis that was successfully treated with total arch replacement and ascending aorta to right internal carotid artery bypass.

Abstract

The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Abstract

BACKGROUND Maximum bite force (MBF) is a common and useful index of masticatory function; it correlates with physical strength in elderly people. Palpation of stiffness in the masseter muscle during forceful biting has been considered to be associated with MBF. However, this assessment method relies on subjective judgments; no study has verified the relationship between MBF and quantitative measurements of masseter muscle stiffness (MMS). OBJECTIVE We aimed to verify the association between masseter muscle myotonometric assessment results and MBF. METHODS In total, 117 community-dwelling >65-year-old individuals from the Tokyo metropolitan area were assessed. MMS on the dominant side during forceful biting was measured with a MyotonPRO device. Abstract

BACKGROUND Although age-related changes in muscle quality influence muscle strength, the relationship between masseter muscle (MM) quality and maximum biting force (MBF) has never been studied. OBJECTIVE The aims of the study were to verify the relationship among MM quality, MBF, and the displacement of the MM while biting forcefully (MMD) and to clarify the age-related decline in MBF in healthy elderly persons. Abstract

QSO B0218+357 is currently the only gravitationally lensed source from which very-high-energy (VHE, &100GeV) gamma-ray emission has been detected. We report the multiwavelength monitoring observations of this source performed between 2016 and 2020 in radio interferometry, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. Abstract

BACKGROUND Direct-acting oral anticoagulant use for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation is limited by bleeding concerns. Asundexian, a novel, oral small molecule activated coagulation factor XIa (FXIa) inhibitor, might reduce thrombosis with minimal effect on haemostasis. We aimed to determine the optimal dose of asundexian and to compare the incidence of bleeding with that of apixaban in patients with atrial fibrillation. METHODS In this randomised, double-blind, phase 2 dose-finding study, we compared asundexian 20 mg or 50 mg once daily with apixaban 5 mg twice daily in patients aged 45 years or older with atrial fibrillation, a CHA2DS2-VASc score of at least 2 if male or at least 3 if female, and increased bleeding risk. The study was conducted at 93 sites in 14 countries, including 12 European countries, Canada, and Japan. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to a treatment group using an interactive web response system, with randomisation stratified by whether patients were receiving a direct-acting oral anticoagulant before the study start. Masking was achieved using a double-dummy design, with participants receiving both the assigned treatment and a placebo that resembled the non-assigned treatment. The primary endpoint was the composite of major or clinically relevant non-major bleeding according to International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria, assessed in all patients who took at least one dose of study medication. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04218266, and EudraCT, 2019-002365-35. FINDINGS Between Jan 30, 2020, and June 21, 2021, 862 patients were enrolled. 755 patients were randomly assigned to treatment. Two patients (assigned to asundexian 20 mg) never took any study medication, resulting in 753 patients being included in the analysis (249 received asundexian 20 mg, 254 received asundexian 50 g, and 250 received apixaban). The mean age of participants was 73·7 years (SD 8·3), 309 (41%) were women, 216 (29%) had chronic kidney disease, and mean CHA2DS2-VASc score was 3·9 (1·3). Asundexian 20 mg resulted in 81% inhibition of FXIa activity at trough concentrations and 90% inhibition at peak concentrations; asundexian 50 mg resulted in 92% inhibition at trough concentrations and 94% inhibition at peak concentrations. Ratios of incidence proportions for the primary endpoint were 0·50 (90% CI 0·14-1·68) for asundexian 20 mg (three events), 0·16 (0·01-0·99) for asundexian 50 mg (one event), and 0·33 (0·09-0·97) for pooled asundexian (four events) versus apixaban (six events). The rate of any adverse event occurring was similar in the three treatment groups: 118 (47%) with asundexian 20 mg, 120 (47%) with asundexian 50 mg, and 122 (49%) with apixaban. INTERPRETATION The FXIa inhibitor asundexian at doses of 20 mg and 50 mg once daily resulted in lower rates of bleeding compared with standard dosing of apixaban, with near-complete in-vivo FXIa inhibition, in patients with atrial fibrillation. Abstract

We present the first search for dark matter (DM) spectral lines in the Galactic centre (GC) region with the MAGIC telescopes. The MAGIC telescopes, located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), are sensitive to gamma rays in the energy range from 50 GeV to 50 TeV. MAGIC has performed indirect DM searches in various astrophysical targets, such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Observations at high zenith angles significantly increase the telescopes' collection area and sensitivity for gamma rays in the TeV regime. We present the results obtained with more than 200 hours of high-zenith angle observations of the GC region with MAGIC, which allow us to probe promising heavy SUSY models, and to obtain competitive limits to the DM annihilation cross-section at high DM particle mass, compared to existing constraints. Abstract

OT 081 is a luminous blazar well known for its variability in many energy bands. The very-high-energy (VHE; E >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the source was discovered by MAGIC and H.E.S.S. during flaring activity in July 2016, after a trigger from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite. By analysing the multiwavelength light curves andthe broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), we study the activity of the source and investigate four individual states of activity in the window from MJD 57575 to 57602. The intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum can be described by a power law with spectral indices of 3.27 ± 0.44(MAGIC)and 3.39 ± 0.58(H.E.S.S.) over energy ranges 60–300 GeV and 120–500 GeV, respectively. The combined contemporaneous high-energy (HE;E >100 MeV) through VHE SED shows curvatureand can be described by a log-parabola shape. A simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC)model is not sufficient to describe the broadband SED. The presence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum of the source challenges the categorisation of OT 081 as a BL Lac and, together with the emission scenarios tested, points to the possibility that the source is transitional in nature between a BL Lac and a flat-spectrum radio quasar.

Abstract

The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart AT2017gfo and the GRB 170817A, associated to the binary neutron star merger GW170817, was one of the major advances in the study of gamma- ray bursts (GRBs) and the hallmark of the multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. Another breakthrough in GRB physics is represented by the discovery of the highly energetic, teraelectronvolt (TeV) component in the GRB 190114C, possibly an universal component in all GRBs. This conclusion is also suggested by the hint of TeV emission in the short GRB 160821B and a few more events reported in the literature. The missing observational piece is the joint detection of TeV emission and gravitational waves from a short GRB and its progenitor. MAGIC observed the counterpart AT2017gfo as soon as the visibility conditions allowed it, namely from January to June 2018. These observations correspond to the maximum flux level observed in the radio and X-ray bands. The upper limits derived from TeV observations are compared with the modelling of the late non-thermal emission using the multi-frequency SED.

Abstract

We have developed a unique particle-separation technique based on size that uses kHz-band ultrasound irradiation in water. Dispersed-millimeter-size particles in dissolved-gases water form themselves into a spherically flocculated particle swarm (SFPS). With the changes of ultrasound irradiation properties, the particles are separated according to their sizes. We previously investigated the characteristics of an SFPS and elucidated its formation mechanism. To achieve an efficient and precise particle-separation technique, the forces acting on the particles during the transition state of the ultrasound modulation must be determined, but it is difficult to clarify the forces acting on each particle. Herein, we experimentally and systematically investigated the forces acting on a single particle trapped in the sound pressure field. We discuss nine types of forces acting on the particle and the bubble adhering to its surface. Under the static state, the particle buoyancy was counterbalanced with the acoustic radiation force acting on the acoustic cavitation-oriented bubbles (ACOBs). We examined two types of amplitude change: a gradual amplitude change of the input power of a transducer, and a step-like amplitude change. The results revealed that the particle motion depends on a subtle balance between the acoustic radiation force acting on the ACOBs and unsteady fluid-dynamical forces acting on the particle. We also demonstrate the classification of particles by diameter by controlling the transition state of the amplitude change of the ultrasound input power. We conclude that the gradual amplitude change provided an efficient and precise classification of particles by their diameters.

Abstract

Introduction Symptomatic anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) drugs have been commonly used for the treatment of AD. Knowing the natural courses of patients with AD on placebo is highly relevant for clinicians to understand their efficacy and for investigators to design clinical studies. Methods The data on rating scales for dementia such as Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) and Severe Impairment Battery were extracted from eight previous Japanese Phase II and III studies. Natural courses of Japanese AD patients in placebo groups were evaluated and statistically analyzed in a pooled and retrospective fashion. Results Decreases in ADAS-cog and Severe Impairment Battery was larger at week 22 or 24 than at week 12. Scores of ADAS-cog appeared to deteriorate faster in moderate AD than in mild AD. Discussion The present data will provide clinicians following up patients with AD with helpful information on how to manage AD patients and investigators with instruction for clinical study design.

Abstract

The well-known supernova remnant (SNR) W 44 is observed in high-energy gamma rays and widely studied to investigate cosmic ray (CR) acceleration. Several analyses of the W 44 surroundings showed the presence of gamma-ray emission offset from the radio SNR shell. This emission is thought to originate from escaped high-energy CRs. We present a detailed analysis of the W 44 region as seen by Fermi-LAT, focusing on the spatial and spectral characteristics of both W44 SNR and its surroundings. The spatial analysis was limited to energies above 1 GeV in order to exploit the improved angular resolution of the instrument, deriving a detailed description of the region morphology. Observations of the north-western region of W 44, also known as SRC-1 from previous works, were conducted with the MAGIC telescopes in the very high-energy gamma-ray band. We analysed MAGIC data exploiting the spatial information derived with the Fermi-LAT analysis at GeV energies. Here we show the results of both analyses and the combined Fermi-LAT and MAGIC spectra, thus obtaining constraining information on the diffusion of the escaped CRs.

Abstract

Vulcanized natural rubber with outstanding mechanical properties due to the rapid strain-induced crystallization was prepared by controlling stereoregularity, based on structural analysis of the vulcanized rubbers. The vulcanized rubbers were prepared at 110, 130, 150 and 170 °C for t90 from natural rubber compounded with sulfur, ZnO, stearic acid and N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide (TBBS). The vulcanized natural rubbers were characterized by swelling method, rubber-state NMR spectroscopy, tensile test and XRD measurement. Stereoregularity, i.e., contents of cis- and trans-1,4-isoprene units, and strain-induced crystallization depended on vulcanization temperature. The vulcanized natural rubber prepared at 130 °C possessed the highest cis-1,4-isoprene unit content and the lowest trans-1,4-isoprene unit content among the vulcanized rubbers, which resulted in the rapid strain-induced crystallization. The content of carbon linking to sulfur was also low for the vulcanized natural rubber prepared at 130 °C. It was found that the vulcanized natural rubber prepared at 130 °C was superior in tensile properties due to high stereoregularity after vulcanization.

Abstract

A series of cinnamic acid derivatives, amides (1-12) and esters (13-22), were synthesized, and structure-activity relationships for antioxidant activity, and monoamine oxidases (MAO) A and B, acetylcholinesterase, and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory activities were analyzed. Among the synthesized compounds, compounds 1-10, 12-18, and rosmarinic acid (23), which contained catechol, o-methoxyphenol or 5-hydroxyindole moieties, showed potent 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. Compounds 9-11, 15, 17-22 showed potent and selective MAO-B inhibitory activity. Compound 20 was the most potent inhibitor of MAO-B. Compounds 18 and 21 showed moderate BChE inhibitory activity. In addition, compound 18 showed potent antioxidant activity and MAO-B inhibitory activity. In a comparison of the cinnamic acid amides and esters, the amides exhibited more potent DPPH free radical scavenging activity, while the esters showed stronger inhibitory activities against MAO-B and BChE. These results suggested that cinnamic acid derivatives such as compound 18, p-coumaric acid 3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl ester, and compound 20, p-coumaric acid phenethyl ester, may serve as lead compounds for the development of novel MAO-B inhibitors and candidate lead compounds for the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract

Mass transfer from a bubble to the surrounding liquid plays an important role in industry processes. To improve the efficiency of the industrial processes, a deep understanding of the mass transfer mechanism is essential. In the present study, the relationship between the instantaneous mass transfer and the motions of the bubble and three-dimensional bubble wakes is discussed, on the basis of precise measurement. Moreover, since some industrial applications are contaminated system, the authors consider influences of bubble-surface contamination on the above. In the present experiments, purified water, and water contaminated with a very small amount of surfactant (1-pentanol) were employed. LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique and HPTS (a pH-sensitive dye) that was calibrated through a photoelectric optical fiber probe in advance were employed to visualize the mass transfer of the bubble and the wake structure of the bubble. The authors investigated highly reproducible single bubbles (considered to be almost the same bubble) launched from a special bubble-launch device; successfully they acquired pseudo-time-series sliced bubble wakes' images from every y-z plane at an equidistant interval. By processing the pseudo-time-series images through their own new image-processing, they challengingly reconstructed three-dimensional bubble wakes. From careful observations on the three-dimensional bubble wakes’ structure, they indirectly found out that the Marangoni convection, which was induced by the non-uniform distribution of surfactants desorption on the bubble surface, raised changes in the boundary layers in the contaminated water. The authors discussed the influences of gas-liquid interface contamination on the bubble motions, bubble wakes, and mass transfer process based on the reconstruction of three-dimensional bubble wakes in the purified water and contaminated water.

Abstract

Dispersed particles with sub-millimeter and millimeter diameters in water were flocculated by a kHz-band-ultrasound radiation. This phenomenon was caused by the acoustic cavitation-oriented bubbles (ACOBs). The flocculating pattern varied with the components and concentration of the dissolved gases. The relationship between the gas conditions and the particle flocculation pattern is discussed along with the estimation of the force balance acting on the particle flocculation. First, the particle flocculation was visualized. The liquid motion in the vessel was then measured via particle image velocimetry. The flocculation patterns were mainly classified into two types: spherical flocculation and chain-like flocculation. Spherical flocculation occurred when air-dissolution water was used, and chain-like flocculation occurred when CO 2 concentration-controlled water was used. Both patterns were dominantly influenced by the acoustic radiation force acting on the ACOBs. At the occurrence of spherical flocculation, the ratio of the acoustic radiation force to the other forces was greater than that at the occurrence of chain-like flocculation. We analyzed the motions of ACOBs and particles by high-speed visualization to clarify the interaction between the particles and ACOBs. The ACOBs adhering to the particle surface in CO 2 concentration-controlled water oscillated with the irradiation frequency and synchronized with other ACOBs. The member particles of the chain-like flocculation were tenaciously held by the Bjerknes force. In contrast, in the air-saturated water, the diameter of the spherically flocculated particle swarm oscillated due to the unstable motion of ACOBs. We suspect that the diameters of the spherically flocculated particle swarm fluctuated.

To improve the efficiency of industrial processes and to precisely comprehend the complex mechanism of global warming, a thorough understanding of the mass transfer mechanism from a bubble to the surrounding liquid is essential. Here we investigated a single CO2 bubble (2.9 mm in equivalent dia.) that ascended in a zigzag motion in purified water and in water contaminated with a very small amount of 1-pentanol. We used a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique and 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (HPTS), and we employed a pH-sensitive dye that was calibrated by means of a photoelectric optical fiber probe to visualize the bubble-to-liquid-phase mass transfer and the bubble's wake structure. Two high-speed cameras were used to capture the bubble wake (including the CO2 dissolution), the bubble motion, and the bubble wake from two orthogonal directions. Based on the visualization results, we obtained the volume, surface area, velocity, orientation angle and shape of the bubble from moment to moment. The instantaneous mass transfer coefficient of the bubble was precisely calculated from the above results. Due to reiteration of the adsorption and desorption of the surfactant on the bubble surface, the direction of the Marangoni convection was very difficult to identify. Here, based on our analysis of forces that were calculated from the bubble motion, we considered the direction of action of the Marangoni convection indirectly. On the basis of these experimental results, we discuss the influences of the bubble-surface contamination on the bubble motion and the mass transfer, as well as the bubble wake.

Abstract

The buoyancy of the bubbles and the decrease in superficial density in the risers generate a gas-lift pumping effect. CO2 dissolution into seawater is completed in the risers, i.e., seawater including CO2 is perfectly isolated from the shallow water. Deep ocean sequestration of CO2 through a gas-lift pump system called Gas Lift Advanced Dissolution system of CO2 (GLAD), are described and discussed on the basis of experimental and computational results done in Research Institute of Green Science and Technology. A gas-liquid two-phase flow takes patterns of bubbly flow, slug flow, froth flow and annular dispersed flow in response to the gas and liquid flow rate. A bubbly flow is the best for the GLAD system. Scaling-up in engineering design needs large-scale structure of the flows. Takayuki Saito et al. carried out a series of researches to reveal the large-scale structure of turbulent bubbly flows.
