We propose an efficient decomposition scheme for a quantum receiver that attains the Helstrom bound in the low-photon regime for discriminating binary coherent states. Our method, which avoids feedback as used in Dolinar's case, breaks down nonlinear operations into basic gates used in continuous-variable quantum computation. We account for realistic conditions by examining the impact of photon loss and imperfect photon detection, including the presence of dark counts, while presenting squeezing as a technique to mitigate these noise sources and maintain the advantage over SQL. Optical circuit systems, unlike other systems, have the potential to perform quantum information processing (QIP) at higher clock rate than conventional processing. The approach utilizing the electromagnetic field of light allows deterministic QIP by feedforward process, which counteracts the quantum randomness by performing adaptive quantum operation according to the measurement result of an entangled state. However, conventional feedforward with electronic measurement devices has limited the clock rate of the QIP down to around 100 MHz. In this paper, we demonstrate a variable squeezing gate with a clock rate of 1.3 THz by all-optical measurement-device-free feedforward. We utilize a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide as an optical parametric amplifier, which eliminates the need for electronic measuring devices and enables ultra-fast feedforward. Experimental results demonstrate that our all-optical QIP operates at a THz clock rate, representing a major step toward a true optical quantum computer which opens the curtain to a new era of ultra-fast information processing., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Photon number-resolving detectors (PNRDs) are the ultimate optical sensors. Superconducting-nanostrip photon detectors (SNSPDs), traditionally known as ON-OFF detectors, have recently been found to have photon number resolving capability without multiplexing. This discovery positions them to become true PNRDs. However, their practical use is limited by the need to precisely detect tiny signal differences with low signal-to-noise ratios within sub-nanosecond time frames. We overcome this challenge using optical sampling with a dual-output Mach Zehnder modulator (DO-MZM) and ultra-short pulsed laser. By adjusting the DO-MZM's bias voltage to nearly balance the outputs, this method enables sensitive detection of picosecond-order signal differences, achieving a temporal resolution of 1.9 ps and facilitating real-time photon number resolution. We applied this method to produce various non-classical quantum states, enhancing their non-classicality through photon number resolution. Multi-photon Fock states have diverse applications such as optical quantum information processing. For the implementation of quantum information processing, it is desirable that Fock states be generated within the telecommunication wavelength band, particularly in the C-band (1530-1565 nm). This is because mature optical communication technologies can be leveraged for the transmission, manipulation, and detection. Additionally, to achieve high-speed quantum information processing, it is desirable for Fock states to be generated in short optical pulses, as this allows embedding lots of information in the time domain. In this paper, we report the first generation of picosecond pulsed multi-photon Fock states (single-photon and two-photon states) in the C-band with Wigner negativities, which are verified by pulsed homodyne tomography. In our experimental setup, we utilize a single-pixel superconducting nanostrip photon-number-resolving detector (SNSPD), which is expected to facilitate the high-rate generation of various quantum states. This capability stems from the high temporal resolution of SNSPDs (50 ps in our case) allowing us to increase the repetition frequency of pulsed light from the conventional MHz range to the GHz range, although in this experiment the repetition frequency is limited to 10 MHz due to the bandwidth of the homodyne detector. In optical quantum information processing with continuous variables, optical non-Gaussian quantum states are essential for universal and fault-tolerant quantum computation. Experimentally, their most typical generation method is photon subtraction (PS) where single-photon detection by an on/off detector probabilistically heralds the generation of squeezed single-photon states. In PS, however, trying to avoid unwanted multi-photon detection inevitably limits the generation rate, hindering the application of squeezed single-photon states. Here, we theoretically show that generalized photon subtraction (GPS), a simple extension of PS, can improve the generation rate while maintaining the quality of the generated states. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the generation rate improvement for 2 dB- and 4 dB-squeezed single-photon states compared to PS, by more than one order of magnitude particularly for the case of 2 dB. Entanglement is a fundamental resource of various optical quantum-information-processing (QIP) applications. Towards high-speed QIP system, entanglement should be encoded in short wavepackets. We report real-time observation of ultrafast optical Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation at a picosecond timescale in a continuous-wave (CW) system. Optical phase-sensitive amplification using 6-THz-bandwidth waveguide-optical-parametric amplifier enhances the effective efficiency of 70-GHz-bandwidth homodyne detectors, mainly used in 5th-generation telecommunication, enabling its use in real-time quantum-state measurement. While power measurement using frequency scanning, i.e., optical spectrum analyzer, is not performed in real-time, our observation is demonstrated through real-time amplitude measurement and can be directly employed in QIP applications. Observed EPR states show quantum correlation of 4.5 dB below shotnoise level encoded in wavepackets with 40-ps period, equivalent to 25-GHz repetition -- ${10^3}$ times faster than previous entanglement observation in CW system. The quantum correlation of 4.5 dB is already sufficient for several QIP applications, and our system can be readily extended to large-scale entanglement. Moreover, our scheme has high compatibility with optical communication technology such as wavelength-division multiplexing, and femtosecond-timescale observation is also feasible. Quantum information processors greatly benefit from high clock frequency to fully harnessing the quantum advantages before they get washed out by the decoherence. In this pursuit, all-optical systems offer unique advantages due to their inherent 100 THz carrier frequency, permitting one to develop THz clock frequency processors. In practice, the bandwidth of the quantum light sources and the measurement devices has been limited to the MHz range and the generation rate of nonclassical states to kHz order -- a tiny fraction of what can be achieved. In this work, we go beyond this limitation by utilizing optical parametric amplifier (OPA) as a squeezed-light source and optical phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSA) to realize high-rate generation of broadband non-Gaussian states and their quantum tomography. Our state generation and measurement system consists of a 6-THz squeezed-light source, a 6-THz PSA, and a 66-GHz homodyne detector. With this system, we have successfully demonstrated non-Gaussian state generation at a 0.9 MHz rate -- almost three orders of magnitude higher than the current state-of-the-art experiments -- with a sub-nanosecond wave packet using continuous-wave laser. The performance is constrained only by the superconducting detector's jitter which currently limits the usable bandwidth of the squeezed light to 1 GHz, rather than the optical and electronic systems. Therefore, if we can overcome the limitation of the timing jitter of superconducting detector, non-Gaussian state generation and detection at GHz rate, or even THz rate, for optical quantum processors might be possible with OPAs., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

In order to provide a cloud service of optical quantum computing, it is inevitable to stabilize the optical system for many hours. It is advantageous to construct a fiber-based system, which does not require spatial alignment. However, fiber-based systems are instead subject to fiber-specific instabilities. For instance, there are phase drifts due to ambient temperature changes and external disturbances, and polarization fluctuations due to the finite polarization extinction ratio of fiber components. Here, we report the success of measuring squeezed light with a fiber system for 24 hours. To do this, we introduce stabilization mechanics to suppress fluctuations in the fiber system, and integrated controller to automatically align the entire system. The squeezed light at the wavelength of 1545.3 nm is measured every 2 minutes, where automated alignments are inserted every 30 minutes. The squeezing levels with the average of -4.42 dB are recorded with an extremely small standard deviation of 0.08 dB over 24 hours.

A quantum computer with low-error, high-speed quantum operations and capability for interconnections is required for useful quantum computations. A logical qubit called Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) qubit in a single Bosonic harmonic oscillator is efficient for mitigating errors in a quantum computer. The particularly intriguing prospect of GKP qubits is that entangling gates as well as syndrome measurements for quantum error correction only require efficient, noise-robust linear operations. To date, however, GKP qubits have been only demonstrated at mechanical and microwave frequency in a highly nonlinear physical system. The physical platform that naturally provides the scalable linear toolbox is optics, including near-ideal loss-free beam splitters and near-unit efficiency homodyne detectors that allow to obtain the complete analog syndrome for optimized quantum error correction. Additional optical linear amplifiers and specifically designed GKP qubit states are then all that is needed for universal quantum computing. In this work, we realize a GKP state in propagating light at the telecommunication wavelength and demonstrate homodyne meausurements on the GKP states for the first time without any loss corrections. Our GKP states do not only show non-classicality and non-Gaussianity at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, but unlike the existing schemes with stationary qubits, they are realizable in a propagating wave system. In the field of continuous-variable quantum information processing, non-Gaussian states with negative values of the Wigner function are crucial for the development of a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer. While several non-Gaussian states have been generated experimentally, none have been created using ultrashort optical wave packets, which are necessary for high-speed quantum computation, in the telecommunication wavelength band where mature optical communication technology is available. In this paper, we present the generation of non-Gaussian states on wave packets with a short 8-ps duration in the 1545.32 nm telecommunication wavelength band using photon subtraction up to three photons. We used a low-loss, quasi-single spatial mode waveguide optical parametric amplifier, a superconducting transition edge sensor, and a phase-locked pulsed homodyne measurement system to observe negative values of the Wigner function without loss correction up to three-photon subtraction. These results can be extended to the generation of more complicated non-Gaussian states and are a key technology in the pursuit of high-speed optical quantum computation., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Non-Gaussian states of light, which are essential in fault-tolerant and universal optical quantum computation, are typically generated by a heralding scheme using photon detectors. Recently, it is theoretically shown that the large timing jitter of the photon detectors deteriorates the purity of the generated non-Gaussian states [T. Sonoyama, $\textit{et al}$., Phys. Rev. A $\textbf{105}$, 043714 (2022)]. In this study, we generate non-Gaussian states with Wigner negativity by time-gated photon detection. We use a fast optical switch for time gating to effectively improve the timing jitter of a photon-number-resolving detector based on transition edge sensor from 50 ns to 10 ns. As a result, we generate non-Gaussian states with Wigner negativity of $-0.011\pm 0.004$, which cannot be observed without the time-gated photon detection method. These results confirm the effect of the timing jitter on non-Gaussian state generation experimentally for the first time and provide the promising method of high-purity non-Gaussian state generation., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Practical quantum computing requires robust encoding of logical qubits in physical systems to protect fragile quantum information. Currently, the lack of scalability limits the logical encoding in most physical systems, and thus the high scalability of propagating light can be a game changer for realizing a practical quantum computer. However, propagating light also has a drawback: the difficulty of logical encoding due to weak nonlinearity. Here, we propose Gaussian breeding that encodes arbitrary Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) qubits in propagating light. The key idea is the efficient and iterable generation of quantum superpositions by photon detectors, which is the most widely used nonlinear element in quantum propagating light. This formulation makes it possible to systematically create the desired qubits with minimal resources. Our simulations show that GKP qubits above a fault-tolerant threshold, including ``magic states'', can be generated with a high success probability and with a high fidelity exceeding 0.99. Measurement-based quantum computation with optical time-domain multiplexing is a promising method to realize a quantum computer from the viewpoint of scalability. Fault tolerance and universality are also realizable by preparing appropriate resource quantum states and electro-optical feedforward that is altered based on measurement results. While a linear feedforward has been realized and become a common experimental technique, nonlinear feedforward was unrealized until now. In this paper, we demonstrate that a fast and flexible nonlinear feedforward realizes the essential measurement required for fault-tolerant and universal quantum computation. Controlling the waveform of light is the key for a versatile light source in classical and quantum electronics. Although pulse shaping of classical light is a mature technique and has been used in various fields, more advanced applications would be realized by a light source that generates arbitrary quantum light with arbitrary temporal waveform. We call such a device a quantum arbitrary waveform generator (Q-AWG). The Q-AWG must be able to handle versatile quantum states of light, which are fragile. Thus, the Q-AWG requires a radically different methodology from classical pulse shaping. In this paper, we invent an architecture of Q-AWGs that can operate semi-deterministically at a repetition rate over GHz in principal. We demonstrate its core technology via generating highly non-classical states with waveforms that have never been realized before. Telecommunication wavelength with well-developed optical communication technologies and low losses in the waveguide are advantageous for quantum applications. However, an experimental generation of non-classical states called non-Gaussian states at the telecommunication wavelength is still underdeveloped. Here, we generate highly-pure-single-photon states, one of the most primitive non-Gaussian states, by using a heralding scheme with an optical parametric oscillator and a superconducting nano-strip photon detector. The Wigner negativity, the indicator of non-classicality, of the generated single photon state is $-0.228\pm0.004$, corresponded to $85.1\pm0.7\%$ of single photon and the best record of the minimum value at all wavelengths. The quantum-optics-technology we establish can be easily applied to the generation of various types of quantum states, opening up the possibility of continuous-variable-quantum-information processing at telecommunication wavelengths., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Continuous-wave (CW) squeezed light is used in generation of various optical quantum states thus is a fundamental resource of fault-tolerant universal quantum computation using optical continuous variables. To realize a practical quantum computer, a waveguide optical parametric amplifier (OPA) is an attractive CW squeezed light source in terms of its THz-order bandwidth and suitability for modularization. The usages of a waveguide OPA in quantum applications thus far, however, are limited due to the difficulty of the generation of the squeezed light with a high purity. In this paper, we report the first observation of Wigner negativity of the states generated by a heralding method using a waveguide OPA. We generate Schr\"{o}dinger cat states at the wavelength of 1545 nm with Wigner negativity using a quasi-single-mode ZnO-doped periodically poled ${\rm LiNbO_3}$ waveguide module we developed. Wigner negativity is regarded as an important indicator of the usefulness of the quantum states as it is essential in the fault-tolerant universal quantum computation. A quantum processor to import, process, and export optical quantum states is a common core technology enabling various photonic quantum information processing. However, there has been no photonic processor which is simultaneously universal, scalable, and programmable. Here, we report on an original loop-based single-mode versatile photonic quantum processor which is designed to be universal, scalable, and programmable. Our processor can perform arbitrarily many steps of programmable quantum operations on a given single-mode optical quantum state by time-domain processing in a dynamically controlled loop-based optical circuit. We use this processor to demonstrate programmable single-mode Gaussian gates and multi-step squeezing gates. In addition, we prove that the processor can perform universal quantum operations by injecting appropriate ancillary states and also be straightforwardly extended to a multi-mode processor. We propose and analyze a setup to tailor the wave functions of the quantum states. Our setup is based on the quantum teleportation circuit, but instead of the usual two-mode squeezed state, two-mode non-Gaussian entangled state is used. Using this setup, we can generate various classes of quantum states such as Schr\"odinger cat states, four-component cat states, superpositions of Fock states, and cubic phase states. These results demonstrate the versatility of our system as a state generator and suggest that conditioning using homodyne measurements is an important tool in the generations of the non-Gaussian states in complementary to the photon number detection., Comment: 13 pages,9 figures

We propose a high-rate generation method of optical Schr\"{o}dinger's cat states. Thus far, photon subtraction from squeezed vacuum states has been a standard method in cat-state generation, but its constraints on experimental parameters limit the generation rate. In this paper, we consider the state generation by photon number measurement in one mode of arbitrary two-mode Gaussian states, which is a generalization of conventional photon subtraction, and derive the conditions to generate high-fidelity and large-amplitude cat states. Our method relaxes the constraints on experimental parameters, allowing us to optimize them and attain a high generation rate. Supposing realistic experimental conditions, the generation rate of cat states with large amplitudes ($|\alpha| \ge 2)$ can exceed megacounts per second, about $10^3$ to $10^6$ times better than typical rates of conventional photon subtraction. This rate would be improved further by the progress of related technologies. Ability to generate non-Gaussian states at a high rate is important in quantum computing using optical continuous variables, where scalable computing platforms have been demonstrated but preparation of non-Gaussian states of light remains as a challenging task. Optical quantum states defined in temporal modes, especially non-Gaussian states like photon-number states, play an important role in quantum computing schemes. In general, the temporal-mode structures of these states are characterized by one or more complex functions called temporal-mode functions (TMFs). Although we can calculate TMF theoretically in some cases, experimental estimation of TMF is more advantageous to utilize the states with high purity. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate complex TMFs. This method can be applied not only to arbitrary single-temporal-mode non-Gaussian states but also to two-temporal-mode states containing two photons. This method is implemented by continuous-wave (CW) dual homodyne measurement and doesn't need prior information of the target states nor state reconstruction procedure. We demonstrate this method by analyzing several experimentally created non-Gaussian states.

Quantum information protocols require various types of entanglement, such as Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR), Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ), and cluster states. In optics, on-demand preparation of these states has been realized by squeezed light sources, but such experiments require different optical circuits for different entangled states, thus lacking versatility. Here we demonstrate an on-demand entanglement synthesizer which programmably generates all these entangled states from a single squeezed light source. This is achieved by developing a loop-based circuit which is dynamically controllable at nanosecond timescale. We verify the generation of 5 different small-scale entangled states as well as a large-scale cluster state containing more than 1000 modes without changing the optical circuit itself. Moreover, this circuit enables storage and release of one part of the generated entangled state, thus working as a quantum memory. This programmable loop-based circuit should open a way for a more general entanglement synthesizer and a scalable quantum processor.

We propose an experimental scheme to generate, in a heralded fashion, arbitrary quantum superpositions of two-mode optical states with a fixed total photon number $n$ based on weakly squeezed two-mode squeezed state resources (obtained via weak parametric down conversion), linear optics, and photon detection. Arbitrary $d$-level (qudit) states can be created this way where $d=n+1$. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate our scheme for $n=2$. The resulting qutrit states are characterized via optical homodyne tomography. We also discuss possible extensions to more than two modes concluding that, in general, our approach ceases to work in this case. For illustration and with regards to possible applications, we explicitly calculate a few examples such as NOON states and logical qubit states for quantum error correction. In particular, our approach enables one to construct bosonic qubit error-correction codes against amplitude damping (photon loss) with a typical suppression of $\sqrt{n}-1$ losses and spanned by two logical codewords that each correspond to an $n$-photon superposition for two bosonic modes., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures
