Density-functional-theory calculations for the adsorption of molecular nitrogen on ruthenium surface are reported. It is found that nitrogen molecule is adsorbed while standing perpendicular to the triangular surface of ruthenium. The doping by K atoms favours the adsorption of molecular nitrogen. The calculation of the adsorption energy has also been performed on iron and osmium clusters which shows that ruthenium adsorbs better than iron or osmium. It is found that potential for atomic nitrogen is deeper and more stable than that of molecular nitrogen and hence atomic nitrogen is important for catalysis., Comment: MS Word generated HTML, no figures, 5 tables

By performing a fully three dimensional Hartree-Fock calculation with use of the Skyrm forces, we demonstrate possibility of exotic deformations violating both the reflection and the axial symmetries of N=Z nuclei in $A \sim 60-80$ mass region. The \Ytwo tetrahedral shape predicted in excited \Zr arises from a shell gap at $N,Z = 40$ which is enhanced for the tetrahedron deformation. We study static non-axial octupole deformations in proton-rich $Z=N$ nuclei, $^{64}$Ge, $^{68}$Se, $^{72}$Kr, $^{76}$Sr, $^{80}$Zr and $^{84}$Mo, by using the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS calculation with no restrictions on the nuclear shape. The optical properties of metal-coated semiconductor nanoparticles are studied. The particles' local-field enhancement, absorption and nonlinear optical behavior are presented in terms of numerical expressions which are solved by means of the electrostatic solutions. The Laplace's equation governing the particle core-shell ratio distribution is also simplified. Results indicate that the proposed theoreticalapproach is very useful in the treatment of nonlinear processes or multishelledparticles.

- Abstract
A superconducting rotating gantry for heavy-ion therapy is being designed. This isocentric rotating gantry can transport heavy ions with the maximum energy of 430 MeV/u to an isocenter with irradiation angles of over 0–360 degrees, and is further capable of performing three-dimensional raster-scanning irradiation. The combined-function superconducting magnets will be employed for the rotating gantry. The superconducting magnets with optimized beam optics allow a compact gantry design with a large scan size at the isocenter; the length and the radius of the gantry will be approximately 13 and 5.5 m, respectively, which are comparable to those for the existing proton gantries. Furthermore, the maximum scan size at the isocenter is calculated to be as large as approximately 200 mm square for heavy-ion beams at the maximum energy of 430 MeV/u. Based on the design of the beam optics, specifications of the superconducting magnets were determined. The superconducting magnets and magnetic-field distributions are designed using a three-dimensional field solver. With the calculated magnetic fields, beam-tracking simulations were performed to verify the design of the superconducting magnets, and concurrently to evaluate the field quality. With calculated beam profiles at the isocenter, we found that the positions of beam spots as well as their size and shape could be well reproduced as designed, proving validity of our design.

This isocentric rotating gantry can transport heavy ions with the maximum energy of 430 MeV/u to an isocenter with irradiation angles of over 0–360 degrees, and is further capable of performing three-dimensional raster-scanning irradiation. The combined-function superconducting magnets will be employed for the rotating gantry. The superconducting magnets with optimized beam optics allow a compact gantry design with a large scan size at the isocenter; the length and the radius of the gantry will be approximately 13 and 5.5 m, respectively, which are comparable to those for the existing proton gantries. Furthermore, the maximum scan size at the isocenter is calculated to be as large as approximately 200 mm square for heavy-ion beams at the maximum energy of 430 MeV/u. Based on the design of the beam optics, specifications of the superconducting magnets were determined. The superconducting magnets and magnetic-field distributions are designed using a three-dimensional field solver. With the calculated magnetic fields, beam-tracking simulations were performed to verify the design of the superconducting magnets, and concurrently to evaluate the field quality. With calculated beam profiles at the isocenter, we found that the positions of beam spots as well as their size and shape could be well reproduced as designed, proving validity of our design.
