7. Passivity test of Mueller matrices in the presence of additive Gaussian noise

Abstract

It is possible to introduce tolerancing with the realizability test of Givens and Kostinski [J. Mod. Opt. 40, 471 (1993)] with a minor modification: it suffices to add a special matrix to [G][[M]sup.T][G][M]. Consequently, it is possible to check experimental Mueller matrices with a more flexible tool. Application to the emblematic case of the Mueller images of the free space shows that more than 99% of the pixels are in fact physical, while only 2% initially passed the test. 8. Noise distribution of Mueller matrices retrieved with active rotating polarimeters

Abstract

Two methods used to retrieve Mueller matrices from intensity measurements are revisited. It is shown that with symmetry or orthogonality considerations, numerical inversions of polarimetric equations can be avoided. With the obtained analytical formulas, noise propagation can be analyzed. If the intensity noise is a Gaussian white noise, the noise of Mueller matrices features remarkable properties. Mueller components are mutually correlated according to a scheme that involves decomposition into four blocks of 2 x 2 matrices. Variances are unequally distributed: the middle 2 x 2 block has the highest variance, the element on the bottom right has the lowest. These characteristics have been validated on experimental Mueller images of the free space. OCIS codes: 110.4280, 120.5410, 260.5430.

Abstract

Polarization-encoded imaging consists of the distributed measurements of polarization parameters for each pixel of an image. We address clustering of multidimensional polarization-encoded images. The spatial coherence of polarization information is considered. Two methods of analysis are proposed: polarization contrast enhancement and a more-sophisticated image-processing algorithm based on a Markovian model. The proposed algorithms are applied and validated with two different Mueller images acquired by a fully polarimetric imaging system. OCIS codes: 100.0100, 100.5010, 120.0120, 260.5430.

10. Target detection with a liquid-crystal-based passive Stokes polarimeter

Abstract

We present an imaging system that measures the polarimetric state of the light coming from each point of a scene. This system, which determines the four components of the Stokes vector at each spatial location, is based on a liquid-crystal polarization modulator, which makes it possible to acquire four-dimensional Stokes parameter images at a standard video rate. We show that using such polarimetric images instead of simple intensity images can improve target detection and segmentation performance. Abstract

Objective based surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) is a label free technique, which is suitable for observing chemical and biological activities at metal-dielectric interfaces in real-time, with high resolution. Recently, digital holographic techniques have been combined with the SPRM to further increase its sensitivities. In SPRM and SPR digital holographic microscope (SPR-DHM) setups, cube beam splitters (BS) are commonly used to direct light onto the back focal plane (BFP) of the microscope objective. However, SPRs feature very strong absorptions, and the intensity of the unwanted reflections from the BS could be of the order of the SPR image intensity. These unwanted reflections will produce strong interference noise in both SPRM and SPR-DHM. The fringes thus generated have to be removed. The illumination being convergent, the reflections would focus in the direction opposite to the BFP. We propose to block them by inserting a 3D fabricated hard knife-edge filter set at that focus, in such a way as not to stop the SPR waves from forming images of interest. Experiments and simulations show that the filter can significantly improve the image quality by reducing the root mean square of the unwanted fringes from 12.6 to 0.500 in terms of gray levels. Abstract

The problem of diffraction from a perfectly conducting periodic surface is solved by means of a coordinate transformation followed by the application of the extinction theorem: an integral equation for the diffracted field is derived. Thanks to the particular feature of the kernel, the solution is written as a converging exponential expansion with its coefficients satisfying a recursion formula. The first term of recurrence can be calculated using one of the boundary conditions so that the problem is solved completely. Index Terms - Diffraction, gratings.

Abstract

A photonics data storage system according to the present invention is described comprising a storage material, a data recording/storage apparatus for recording information in this storage material, and an addressing/data reading apparatus for reading the recorded information from this storage material. The photonics data storage system encodes data in the storage medium by an interferometric recording process. The storage medium is composed of a polypeptide material. The polypeptide material comprises a solution of chromium-doped collagen, in which solution alpha and beta chains are predominantly present in proportions such that an alpha / beta ratio is greater than 1.

Abstract

The present invention comprises a solid-state system for reading information from a photonics diffractive memory. An acousto-optic deflector directs a convergent light beam onto a micr-mirror array which then reflects the light beam onto the photonics diffractive memory at a predetermined point and angle so as to access a packet of information. The compact architecture for this diffractive optics systems in accordance with the present invention integrates a number of components into a compact package, including an acousto-optic deflector and a microoptoelectromechanical system (MOEMS) mirror array whose elements oscillate with a sznchronized frequency adapted to that of the acousto-optic deflector. This architecture reduces the addressing component of a reading system for a photonics diffractive memory to a matchbox size.
