Abstract

On March 25th 2019, the Belle II detector recorded the first collisions delivered by the SuperKEKB accelerator. This marked the beginning of the physics run with vertex detector. The vertex detector was aligned initially with cosmic ray tracks without magnetic field simultaneously with the drift chamber. The alignment method is based on Millepede II and the General Broken Lines track model and includes also the muon system or primary vertex position alignment. To control weak modes, we employ sensitive validation tools and various track samples can be used as alignment input, from straight cosmic tracks to mass-constrained decays. With increasing luminosity and experience, the alignment is approaching the target performance, crucial for the first physics analyses in the era of Super-BFactories. We will present the software framework for the detector calibration and alignment, the results from the first physics run and the prospects in view of the experience with the first data.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment features a substantial upgrade of the Belle detector and will operate at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. The accelerator completed its first phase of commissioning in 2016, and the Belle II detector saw its first electron-positron collisions in April 2018. Belle II features a newly designed silicon vertex detector based on double-sided strip layers and DEPFET pixel layers. A subset of the vertex detector was operated in 2018 to determine background conditions (Phase 2 operation). The collaboration completed full detector installation in January 2019, and the experiment started full data taking. This paper will report on the final arrangement of the silicon vertex detector part of Belle II with a focus on online monitoring of detector conditions and data quality, on the design and use of diagnostic and reference plots, and on integration with the software framework of Belle II. Data quality monitoring plots will be discussed with a focus on simulation and acquired cosmic and collision data.

4. What is a Textbook Layout that Everyone Understands? : Towards a Comprehensive Understanding of Text and Supplementary Information

Abstract

Textbooks often consist not only of textual information but also of supplementary information. In this study, we investigated whether the comprehension and accessibility of supplementary information differs when it is placed around the text or inserted into the text. 81 university students were asked to read texts with supplementary information around the text and texts with supplementary information inserted into the text, and to answer questions related to the content. They were asked to answer questions about the content. They were also asked about their reading skills and the ease with which they could understand each text. The results showed that comprehension scores were higher when additional information was inserted into the text. In addition, only participants who think they are poor readers rated the supplementary information as easier to understand and remember when it was inserted into the text. Based on these results, the better layout of the textbook was discussed.

5. How can visual perception of numbers affect computational fluency?

Abstract

The ability to calculate fluently is one of the basic academic skills, but certain students have difficulty acquiring it, such as those with developmental dyscalculia. In this study, we focus on the visual perception of numbers as a factor related to computational fluency, and examine whether enlarging the letters of the numbers or widening the line spacing in a calculation task would increase computational fluency. Four hundred and thirty-six junior high school students were asked to perform a two-digit addition or subtraction task in which font size and line width were manipulated, and the number of correct answers per minute was used as a measure of computational fluency. The results showed that enlarging the font size increased the computational fluency of all participants, and that widening the line spacing contributed to the fluency of participants with low computational skills, while it may decrease that of high computational skills.

6. How Can We Access Children Basic Academic Skills? The Possibility of CorrectedAcademic Skills via an Alternative Approach

Abstract

The skills of reading, writing, and calculating manually are fundamental parts of subject learning. However, information-communication technology is expected to serve as an alternative to these basic academic skills. We conducted a study of158 Japanese elementary students (2nd to 6th grade) comparing students basic academic skills to their corrected academicskills, as measured with accommodations. Students were asked to perform independent reading and reading with a lis-tening comprehension task (Experiment 1), a manual Kanji-writing word task (Japanese characters) and a multiple-choicetask to measure Kanji knowledge (Experiment 2), and a manual calculation task and one using a calculator (Experiment3). Comparing the scores on the tasks performed by themselves and with accommodation, we found that 5 to 13% of thestudents were supported in their basic academic skills by the accommodation. The cognitive processes involved in learningthe basic academic skills and the corrected one are discussed.

8. What Factors of Background Music Disrupt Task Performance? Influence ofTypes of Sound, Tasks, and Working Memory Capacity on IrrelevantSound/Speech Effect

Abstract

Task-irrelevant background speech or sounds are known to have detrimental effects on task performance which are calledirrelevant-speech/sound effects (ISEs). In this study, we have investigated the contributing factor responsible for magnitudeof ISE focusing on the meaningfulness of the background noise and working memory capacity (WMC). Participants wereasked to perform reading comprehension task (Exp. 1), serial recall task (Exp 2), and match-to-sample task (Exp.3)with or without task-irrelevant instrumental music and lyrics, and their WMC was measured with the Reading SpanTest. The results revealed that the irrelevant sounds with lyrics, but not instrumental music disrupted the performanceof the participants in both the reading comprehension and serial recall tasks , while that in match-to-sample task was notinterfered by either sound types. The moderating effect of WMC was not observed in any experiments. The results impliedthat ISEs were observed when phonological loop was used to conduct these tasks. Based on these results, the function ofa learners WMC in the ISE is discussed.

Abstract

Background: Although intravenous methylprednisolone pulse (IVMP) therapy has been recommended for ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG), the evidence is limited. Aim: We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of IVMP for OMG. Methods: The patients with OMG were chosen retrospectively from May 2010 to December 2022. The therapeutic effects between IVMP‐treated and non‐IVMP‐treated groups were determined by ∆ocular quantitative MG (QMG) score and the ∆ocular MG activities of daily living profile (MG‐ADL) score, which is the disparities of the scores between before and after 1 month of drug administration; and Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America post‐intervention status at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Results: There were 26 patients with OMG included, with the mean age of 67.2 ± 13.1 years. 13 of the 26 people with OMG received IVMP and subsequent low‐dose immunotherapies. The ∆ocular QMG and ∆ocular MG‐ADL scores were significantly higher in the IVMP group of 3 (1.5, 4) and 3 (2, 4.5) than in the non‐IVMP group of 1.5 (0, 3) and 1 (0, 2), p = 0.038 and p = 0.0027, respectively. The rates of minimal manifestation or better status in post‐intervention status at 1 and 12 months were also considerably higher in the IVMP group of 77% and 92% compared with the non‐IVMP group of 0% and 23%, p = 0.0001 and 0.001. There were no serious side effects discovered. Conclusion: IVMP induction therapy can quickly and safely improve symptoms of OMG, and subsequent low‐dose immunotherapy can keep symptoms at bay for 12 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the super KEK B-factory (SuperKEKB) in Tsukuba, Japan, has been collecting $e^+e^−$ collision data since March 2019. Operating at a record-breaking luminosity of up to $4.7×10^{34} cm^{−2}s^{−1}$, data corresponding to $424 fb^{−1}$ has since been recorded. The Belle II VerteX Detector (VXD) is central to the Belle II detector and its physics program and plays a crucial role in reconstructing precise primary and decay vertices. It consists of the outer 4-layer Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) using double sided silicon strips and the inner two-layer PiXel Detector (PXD) based on the Depleted P-channel Field Effect Transistor (DePFET) technology. The PXD DePFET structure combines signal generation and amplification within pixels with a minimum pitch of $(50×55) μm^2$. A high gain and a high signal-to-noise ratio allow thinning the pixels to $75 μm$ while retaining a high pixel hit efficiency of about $99%$. As a consequence, also the material budget of the full detector is kept low at $≈0.21%$$\frac{X}{X_0}$ per layer in the acceptance region. This also includes contributions from the control, Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), and data processing Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) as well as from cooling and support structures. This article will present the experience gained from four years of operating PXD; the first full scale detector employing the DePFET technology in High Energy Physics. Overall, the PXD has met the expectations. Operating in the intense SuperKEKB environment poses many challenges that will also be discussed. The current PXD system remains incomplete with only 20 out of 40 modules having been installed. A full replacement has been constructed and is currently in its final testing stage before it will be installed into Belle II during the ongoing long shutdown that will last throughout 2023.
