This study proposes a versatile and efficient optimisation method for discrete coils that induce a magnetic field by their steady currents. The prime target is gradient coils for MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). The derivative (gradient) of the $z$-component the magnetic field, which is calculated by the Biot--Savart's law, with respect to the $z$-coordinate in the Cartesian $xyz$ coordinate system is considered as the objective function. Then, the derivative of the objective function with respect to a change of coils in shape is formulated according to the concept of shape optimisation. The resulting shape derivative (as well as the Biot--Savart's law) is smoothly discretised with the closed B-spline curves. In this case, the control points (CPs) of the curves are naturally selected as the design variables. As a consequence, the shape derivative is discretised to the sensitivities of the objective function with respect to the CPs. Those sensitivities are available to solve the present shape-optimisation problem with a certain gradient-based nonlinear-programming solver. The numerical examples exhibit the mathematical reliability, computational efficiency, and engineering applicability of the proposed methodology based on the shape derivative/sensitivities and the closed B-spline curves.

This paper proposes a fast time-domain boundary element method (TDBEM) to solve three-dimensional transient electromagnetic scattering problems regarding perfectly electric conductors in the classical marching-on-in-time manner. The algorithm of the fast TDBEM is a time-domain variant of the interpolation-based fast multipole method (IFMM), which is similar to the time-domain IFMM for acoustic scattering problems investigated in the author's previous studies. The principle of the present IFMM is to interpolate the kernel functions of the electric and magnetic field integral equations (EFIE and MFIE, respectively) so that every kernel function is expressed in a form of separation of variables in terms of both the spatial and temporal variables. Such an expression enables to construct a fast method to evaluate the scalar and vector potentials in the EFIE and MFIE with using so-called multipole-moments and local-coefficients associated with a space-time hierarchy. As opposed to $O(N_s^2 N_t)$ of the conventional TDBEM, the computational complexity of the fast TDBEM is estimated as $O(N_s^{1+\delta}N_t)$, where $N_s$ and $N_t$ stand for the spatial and temporal degrees of freedom, respectively, and $\delta$ is typically $1/2$ or $1/3$. The numerical examples presented the advantages of the proposed fast TDBEM over the conventional TDBEM when solving large-scale problems.

We investigate the possible thermalization process of the highly occupied and weakly coupled Yang-Mills fields expanding along the beam axis through an evaluation of the entropy, particle number, and pressure anisotropy. The time evolution of the system is calculated by solving the equation of motion for the Wigner function in the semiclassical approximation with initial conditions mimicking the glasma. For the evaluation of the entropy, we adopt the Husimi-Wehrl (HW) entropy, which is obtained by using the Husimi function, a positive semidefinite quantum distribution function given by smearing the Wigner function. By numerical calculations at $g=0.1$ and $0.2$, the entropy production is found to occur together with the particle creation in two distinct stages: In the first stage, the particle number and the entropy at low longitudinal momenta grow rapidly. In the second stage, the particle number and the entropy of higher longitudinal momentum modes show slower increase. The pressure anisotropy remains in our simulation and implies that the system is still out-of-equilibrium., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures

This study presents a topology optimization scheme for realizing a bound state in the continuum along an open acoustic waveguide comprising a periodic array of elastic materials. First, we formulate the periodic problem as a system of linear algebraic equations using a scattering matrix associated with a single unit structure of the waveguide. The scattering matrix is numerically constructed using the boundary element method. Subsequently, we employ the Sakurai--Sugiura method to determine resonant frequencies and the Floquet wavenumbers by solving a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for the linear system. We design the shape and topology of the unit elastic material such that the periodic structure has a real resonant wavenumber at a given frequency by minimizing the imaginary part of the resonant wavenumber. The proposed topology optimization scheme is based on a level-set method with a novel topological derivative. We demonstrate a numerical example of the proposed topology optimization and show that it realizes a bound state in the continuum through some numerical experiments., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures

Our objective is to stabilise and accelerate the time-domain boundary element method (TDBEM) for the three-dimensional wave equation. To overcome the potential time instability, we considered using the Burton--Miller-type boundary integral equation (BMBIE) instead of the ordinary boundary integral equation (OBIE), which consists of the single- and double-layer potentials. In addition, we introduced a smooth temporal basis, i.e. the B-spline temporal basis of order $d$, whereas $d=1$ was used together with the OBIE in a previous study [Takahashi 2014]. Corresponding to these new techniques, we generalised the interpolation-based fast multipole method that was developed in \cite{takahashi2014}. In particular, we constructed the multipole-to-local formula (M2L) so that even for $d\ge 2$ we can maintain the computational complexity of the entire algorithm, i.e. $O(N_{\rm s}^{1+\delta} N_{\rm t})$, where $N_{\rm s}$ and $N_{\rm t}$ denote the number of boundary elements and the number of time steps, respectively, and $\delta$ is theoretically estimated as $1/3$ or $1/2$. The numerical examples indicated that the BMBIE is indispensable for solving the homogeneous Dirichlet problem, but the order $d$ cannot exceed 1 owing to the doubtful cancellation of significant digits when calculating the corresponding layer potentials. In regard to the homogeneous Neumann problem, the previous TDBEM based on the OBIE with $d=1$ can be unstable, whereas it was found that the BMBIE with $d=2$ can be stable and accurate. The present study will enhance the usefulness of the TDBEM for 3D scalar wave problems.

This paper presents a shape optimisation system to design the shape of an acoustically-hard object in the three-dimensional open space. Boundary element method (BEM) is suitable to analyse such an exterior field. However, the conventional BEM, which is based on piecewise polynomial shape and interpolation functions, can require many design variables because they are usually chosen as a part of the nodes of the underlying boundary element mesh. In addition, it is not easy for the conventional method to compute the gradient of the sound pressure on the surface, which is necessary to compute the shape derivative of our interest, of a given object. To overcome these issues, we employ the isogeometric boundary element method (IGBEM), which was developed in our previous work. With using the IGBEM, we can design the shape of surfaces through control points of the NURBS surfaces of the target object. We integrate the IGBEM with the nonlinear programming software through the adjoint variable method (AVM), where the resulting adjoint boundary value problem can be also solved by the IGBEM with a slight modification. The numerical verification and demonstration validate our shape optimisation framework.

This paper proposes an isogeometric boundary element method (IGBEM) to solve the electromagnetic scattering problems for three-dimensional doubly-periodic multi-layered structures. The main concerns are the constructions of (i) an open surface (between two layers) and (ii) a vector basis function with using the B-spline functions. Regarding (i), we considered an algorithm to generate a doubly-periodic open surface with the tensor product of the B-spline functions of any degree. Regarding (ii), we employed the vector basis function based on the B-spline functions, which was proposed by Buffa et al. (2010), and adapted it to the underlying periodic problems so that it can satisfy the quasi-periodic condition on the boundary of an open surface. With the aim of clarification of color correlations among quarks, we investigate the color correlation between a static quark and an antiquark (static $q\bar q$) below and above the phase transition temperature $T_c$ through the entanglement entropy(EE). By a quenched lattice QCD calculation on an anisotropic lattice adopting the standard Wilson gauge action in the Coulomb gauge, we compute a reduced density matrix $\rho$ defined in the color space, and the entanglement entropy $S_{\rm EE}$ constructed from $\rho$. The spatial volume is $L^3 = 24^3$ and the temporal extents are $N_T = 12,13,14,15,16,18,20$ and $24$, with a gauge coupling $\beta = 5.75$ and a renormalized anisotropy $\xi = 4.0$, which corresponds to temperatures between 180 and 370 MeV. From an analysis of $\rho$ and $S_{\rm EE}$, the color correlation between $q\bar q$ pairs is obtained as a function of the interquark distance $R$ and the temperature $T$. Below $T_c$, the $R$-dependence of the color correlation resembles that at $T=0$: the quark's color correlation gradually decreases as $R$ increases due to the color screening by in-between gluons. Above $T_c$, due to the deconfinement phase transition, the color correlation among quarks is found to quickly dissappear. Further, we investigate the color screening effect via the screening mass defined by $\rho$, and discuss the differences in the screening properties between the small and large R regions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The spectrum of the negative-parity spin-1/2 $\Lambda$ baryons is studied using lattice QCD and hadronic effective theory in a unitarized coupled-channel framework. A direct comparison between the two approaches is possible by considering the hadronic effective theory in a finite volume and with hadron masses and mesonic decay constants that correspond to the situation studied on the lattice. Comparing the energy level spectrum and $SU(3)$ flavor decompositions of the individual states, it is found that the lowest two states extracted from lattice QCD can be identified with one of the two $\Lambda(1405)$-poles and the $\Lambda(1670)$ resonance. The quark mass dependences of these two lattice QCD levels are in good agreement with their effective theory counterparts. However, as current lattice QCD studies still rely on three-quark operators to generate the physical states, clear signals corresponding to the meson-baryon scattering states, that appear in the finite volume effective theory calculation, are not yet seen., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Real-time evolution of replicas of classical field is proposed as an approximate simulator of real-time quantum field dynamics at finite temperatures. We consider $N$ classical field configurations dubbed as replicas which interact with each other via the $\tau$-derivative terms and evolve with the classical equation of motion. The partition function of replicas is found to be proportional to that of quantum field in the imaginary time formalism. As the replica index $\tau$ can be regarded as the imaginary time index, the replica evolution is technically the same as the molecular dynamics part of the hybrid Monte-Carlo sampling and the replica configurations should reproduce the correct quantum equilibrium distribution after the long-time evolution. At the same time, evolution of the replica-index average of field variables is described by the classical equation of motion when the fluctuations are small. In order to examine the real-time propagation properties of replicas, we first discuss replica evolution in quantum mechanics. Statistical averages of observables are precisely obtained by the initial condition average of replica evolution, and the time evolution of the unequal-time correlation function, $\langle x(t) x(t')\rangle$, in a harmonic oscillator is also described well by the replica evolution in the range $T/\omega > 0.5$. Next, we examine the statistical and dynamical properties of the $\phi^4$ theory in the 4+1 dimensional spacetime, which contains three spatial, one replica index or the imaginary time, and one real-time. We note that the Rayleigh-Jeans divergence can be removed in replica evolution with $N \geq 2$ when the mass counterterm is taken into account. We also find that the thermal mass obtained from the unequal-time correlation function at zero momentum grows as a function of the coupling as in the perturbative estimate in the small coupling region., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures (text and Figs. 6 and 7 are updated in v2)

We investigate the shear viscosity $\eta$ of the classical Yang-Mills (CYM) field on a lattice by using the Green-Kubo formula, where the shear viscosity is calculated from the time-correlation function of the energy-momentum tensor in equilibrium. Dependence of the shear viscosity $\eta(g,T)$ on the coupling $g$ and temperature $T$ is represented by a scaling function $f_\eta(g^2T)$ as $\eta(g,T)=Tf_\eta(g^2T)$ due to the scaling-invariant property of the CYM. The explicit functional form of $f_\eta(g^2T)$ is successfully determined from the calculated shear viscosity: It turns out that $\eta(g,T)$ of the CYM field is proportional to $1/g^{1.10-1.88}$ at weak coupling, which is a weaker dependence on $g$ than that in the leading-order perturbation theory but consistent with that of the "anomalous viscosity" $\eta\propto 1/g^{1.5}$ under the strong disordered field. The obtained shear viscosity is also found to be roughly consistent with that estimated through the analysis of the anisotropy of the pressure of the CYM dynamics in the expanding geometry with recourse to a hydrodynamic equation., Comment: 10pages, 11figures

We calculate the low-lying spectrum of charmed baryons in lattice QCD on the $32^3\times64$, $N_f=2+1$ PACS-CS gauge configurations at the almost physical pion mass of $\sim 156$ MeV/c$^2$. By employing a set of interpolating operators with different Dirac structures and quark-field smearings for the variational analysis, we extract the ground and first few excited states of the spin-$1/2$ and spin-$3/2$, singly-, doubly-, and triply-charmed baryons. Additionally, we study the $\Xi_c$-$\Xi_c^\prime$ mixing and the operator dependence of the excited states in a variational approach. We identify several states that lie close to the experimentally observed excited states of the $\Sigma_c$, $\Xi_c$ and $\Omega_c$ baryons, including some of the $\Xi_c$ states recently reported by LHCb. We study the color correlation between static quark and antiquark ($q\bar q$) in the confined phase via reduced density matrices $\rho$ defined in color space. We adopt the standard Wilson gauge action and perform quenched calculations with the Coulomb gauge condition for reduced density matrices. The spatial volumes are $L^3 = 8^3$, $16^3$, $32^3$ and $48^3$, with the gauge couplings $\beta = 5.7$, 5.8 and 6.0. Each element of the reduced density matrix in the sub space of quarks' color degrees of freedom of the $q\bar q$ pair is calculated from staples defined by link variables. As a result, we find that $\rho$ is well written by a linear combination of the strongly correlated $q\bar q$ pair state with the color-singlet component and the uncorrelated $q\bar q$ pair state with random color configurations. We compute the Renyi entropies $S^{\rm Renyi}$ from $\rho$ to investigate the $q\bar q$ distance dependence of the color correlation of the $q\bar q$ pair and find that the color correlation is quenched as the distance increases., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures

We present an algorithm to parallelize the inverse fast multipole method (IFMM), which is an approximate direct solver for dense linear systems. The parallel scheme is based on a greedy coloring algorithm, where two nodes in the hierarchy with the same color are separated by at least $\sigma$ nodes. We proved that when $\sigma \ge 6$, the workload associated with one color is embarrassingly parallel. However, the number of nodes in a group (color) may be small when $\sigma = 6$. Therefore, we also explored $\sigma = 3$, where a small fraction of the algorithm needs to be serialized, and the overall parallel efficiency was improved. We implemented the parallel IFMM using OpenMP for shared-memory machines. Successively, we applied it to a fast-multipole accelerated boundary element method (FMBEM) as a preconditioner, and compared its efficiency with (a) the original IFMM parallelized by linking a multi-threaded linear algebra library and (b) the commonly used parallel block-diagonal preconditioner. Our results showed that our parallel IFMM achieved at most $4\times$ and $11\times$ speedups over the reference method (a) and (b), respectively, in realistic examples involving more than one million variables.

We investigate the shear viscosity of massless classical scalar fields in the $\phi^4$ theory on a lattice by using the Green-Kubo formula. Based on the scaling property of the classical field, the shear viscosity is represented using a scaling function. Equilibrium expectation value of the time-correlation function of the energy-momentum tensor is evaluated as the ensemble average of the classical field configurations, whose time evolution is obtained by solving the classical equation of motion starting from the initial condition in thermal equilibrium. It is found that there are two distinct damping time scales in the time-correlation function, which is found to show damped oscillation behavior in the early stage around a slow monotonous decay with an exponential form, and the slow decay part is found to dominate the shear viscosity in the massless classical field theory. This kind of slow decay is also known to exist in the molecular dynamics simulation, then it may be a generic feature of dense matter., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures
