21. Efficacy of Ascorbic Acid, Thiamine, and Hydrocortisone Combination Therapy: Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract

Background/Aim: Sepsis is a life-threatening biological condition that induces systemic tissue and organ dysfunction and confers a high mortality risk. Although the use of hydrocortisone in combination with ascorbic acid and thiamine (HAT therapy) significantly reduced mortality from sepsis or septic shock in a previous study, it did not improve mortality in subsequent randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Therefore, no definitive conclusion has been established on the benefits of HAT therapy for sepsis or septic shock. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the treatment outcomes of HAT therapy in patients with sepsis or septic shock. Patients and Methods: We searched databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane Library) for RCTs using the terms “ascorbic acid”, “thiamine”, “sepsis”, “septic shock”, and “RCT”. The primary outcome of this meta-analysis was the mortality rate, and the secondary outcomes were the incidence of new-onset acute renal injury (AKI), intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (ICU-LOS), change in the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score within 72 hours, and duration of vasopressor use. Results: Nine RCTs were identified and included in the outcome evaluation. HAT therapy did not improve the 28-day and ICU mortality, new-onset AKI, ICU-LOS, or SOFA scores. However, HAT therapy significantly shortened the duration of vasopressor use. Conclusion: HAT therapy did not improve mortality, the SOFA score, renal injury, or ICU-LOS. Further studies are needed to confirm whether it shortens the duration of vasopressor use.

33. Effects of C4F8 plasma polymerization film on etching profiles in the Bosch process.

Abstract

The Bosch process is a deep etching method for silicon that uses C4F8 plasma-deposited polymerized films as passivation films to protect the silicon sidewalls. This study measured the deposition rate of the passivation films and the etch rate with F-radical exposure and analyzed the chemical composition of the films. Additionally, we observed the deformation of the passivation films during the Bosch process and assessed its influence on the etch profiles. As the C4F8 flow rates increased, the deposition rates attained a local maximum, subsequently decreased to a local minimum and then increased again. The deposition rates were extremely low when the pressure exceeded 10 Pa. With the increasing C4F8 flow rates, inductively coupled plasma power, and pressure, the respective bond content varied up to 10%, and C—CFX and C—C bond contents were replaced with CF2 and CF contents, respectively. The results indicated that the chemical composition of the films did not affect the etch rates of the films, and upon exposure to F radicals, the chemical composition of all films transformed into an identical chemical composition with a higher CF2 bond content. Polymerized films with low CF2-bond content deformed with F-radical exposure, enabled the passage of F radicals, and did not serve as passivation films. In addition to high deposition rates and high F-radical resistance, the Bosch process requires passivation films with high CF2 bond content. Abstract

Recent studies have reported wing interference patterns (WIPs), which reflect the microstructure of the wing, for small insects belonging to the Diptera and Hymenoptera orders. WIPs have been evaluated using RGB or multispectral images, but in contrast to these approaches, hyperspectral images allow a more detailed analysis of spectral variation, which may not be captured by RGB or multispectral images. Here, I investigated the WIPs of 12 Drosophila species using hyperspectral images. The average spectrum was calculated for each of the six compartments of the wing region and for the entire wing, including all six compartments. This information was used to evaluate sexual and interspecific differences in the WIPs of 12 Drosophila species. In addition, the possibility of species discrimination based on WIPs was explored using the random forest machine learning algorithm. The present study demonstrates significant sex and interspecific differences in WIPs for each of the six compartments of the wing regions as well as for the entire wing region.
