This chapter discusses the techniques related to the recognition of engineering drawings and maps. The main reason for the lack of success is that the algorithms needed to carry out automatic recognition of complex drawings tend to be unwieldy. The category, automatic recognition of maps, is the most rewarding, especially for urban planning and for gas, water, electric, and telephone utility management. Automatic digitizers based on these techniques are also presented, together with the state of the art in the application of drawing-recognition techniques. Grid locking is one such postprocessing technique and are discussed. To effectively use the design data contained in such drawings, automatic recognition of hand-drawn plant diagrams is considered as being an initial data input for a CAD system.

We propose a new concept of walkthrough-style finger vein authentication. Adaptive light-sources control enables multi-finger vein capturing in real time. Each finger vein region is precisely detected by utilizing a depth camera. Experiments in a prototype show real-time authentication with high accuracy.

The process of self-learning of motions by animals has been modeled by a three-layered neural net, and its function has been verified. In this model the neural net takes the place of a controller which receives the current shape and posture of an animal as input and feeds out the next optimum motion as output. To give a self-learning capability to this neural net, this model includes a function to add a random number to the output of the neural net, an ability to evaluate the change of its shape and posture according to its instinct (evaluation function) and to generate appropriate training patterns. When a learning takes place following this model, an optimal motion sequence based on the instinct is formed automatically in the weights of the neural net. By computer simulation it has been observed that a starfish learns the sequences of getting-up motions successfully and becomes skillful as it gains experience.

A structure of a multimedia database management system that enables inferential retrieval and automatic construction is proposed. It consists of three parts, namely, a knowledge base at the top, a relational manager in the middle, and a media-oriented manager at the bottom. An automatic recognition and data input method for map figure data and an automatic database construction method and renewal capability are introduced. The effectiveness of these methods has been confirmed by applying them to a prototype map-based system for utility management. >

This paper proposes an approach to integrate image recognition technology into nonlinear video editing system and discusses the results of a prototype development. The prototype consists of five support functions for video editing; automatic scene separation during disk recording, tree structure story editing, quick review with micon, film metaphor interface and integrated information management. The automatic scene separation is the exact solution for the complaint of the current system users. The tree structure story editing and the integrated information management provide methods to author video structure in several different detail levels and relieves the constrain of limited size of the window. The quick review with micon is a convenient shot comparison method. The film metaphor interface offers a intuitive and speedy operation for video strings.

A cheap, very operable ultrasound diagnosing device capable of forming a panorama slice image in a real time manner is realized. The device comprises: an imaging unit 120 for converting ultrasound data obtained from a probe 200 into an image; computers (130, 140) having a shift amount detecting function of detecting a shift amount between formed images by the operation of the probe 200 and a rotation amount detecting function of detecting a rotation amount between slice images generated by the operation of the probe 200; and panorama image displaying means 150 for displaying a panorama image 151 obtained by connecting the sequence of slice images captured during diagnosis in a plane manner in accordance with the shift amount and the rotation amount detected by the computers in parallel to the motion image display. Thus, the panorama image can be formed in a real time manner from the sequence of slice images obtained by the probe. The panorama image forming state can be recognized on a display momentarily and an erroneous probe operation can be corrected.
