Electrons in localized 4f orbitals around lanthanide elements in solids are dominated by strong spin-orbit coupling. The resultant J multiplets are further split by the crystalline electric field, where J denotes the total angular momentum quantum number, and hence exhibit anisotropic spatial distribution. The anisotropy of spin-orbit entangled 4f electrons is closely linked to their physical properties. Here, we demonstrate the visualization of 4f electrons in pyrochlore oxides A2Ir2O7 (A = Pr, Nd, and Eu) by combining high-photon-energy X-ray diffraction and valence electron density (VED) analysis based on the core differential Fourier synthesis (CDFS) method. The observed VED distributions around the A site roughly agree with point-charge calculations, considering the relativistic spin-orbit coupling and the trigonal crystal electric field under the LS coupling scheme. We respond to the "Comment on "Reconsidering the nonlinear emergent inductance: time-varying Joule heating and its impact on the AC electrical response"", submitted by Yokouchi et al. (arXiv:2407.15682), which refers to our preprint by Furuta et al (arXiv:2407.00309). In our preprint, we argued that the nonlinear impedance reported for materials with noncollinear magnetic textures, Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, YMn$_6$Sn$_6$, and FeSn$_2$, can be attributed to the considerable contribution of Joule-heating-induced AC electrical response, rather than the emergent electric field (EEF) due to the current-induced-dynamics of magnetic textures. In the comment by Yokouchi et al., the authors presented new data and concluded that the nonlinear impedance previously reported for Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ and YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ was not due to Joule heating but to the EEF. After reviewing their data and arguments, we found that (i) they misunderstood the applicability of the Joule heating model discussed in our preprint (arXiv:2407.00309), (ii) the data they presented in the comment are affected by extrinsic superconductivity caused during the microfabrication of specimens using focused ion beam (FIB) methods, and (iii) they misinterpreted their new data regarding the magnetic-field-angle dependence of the nonlinear impedance. Thus, we maintain that the nonlinear impedance reported in the literature and the comment includes a considerable impact from Joule heating. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, the cross-sectional area dependence of the nonlinear impedance refutes the EEF scenario, and that the sign change of nonlinear resistance observed by Yokouchi \textit{et al.}~is not allowed from the perspective of stability associated with the current-driven EEF., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures; reply to arXiv:2407.15682

The Hall effect is one of the most fundamental but elusive phenomena in condensed matter physics due to the rich variety of underlying mechanisms. Here we report an exceptionally large Hall effect in a frustrated magnet GdCu$_2$ with high conductivity. The Hall conductivity at the base temperature is as high as 4 x 10$^4$ $\Omega^{-1}$cm$^{-1}$ and shows abrupt sign changes under magnetic fields. Remarkably, the giant Hall effect is rapidly suppressed as the longitudinal conductivity is lowered upon increasing temperature or introducing tiny amount of quenched disorder. Our systematic transport measurements together with neutron scattering measurements and ab initio band calculations indicate that the unusual Hall effect can be understood in terms of spin-splitting induced emergence/disappearance of Fermi pockets as well as skew scattering from spin-chiral cluster fluctuations in a field-polarized state. The present study demonstrates complex interplay among magnetization, spin-dependent electronic structure, and spin fluctuations in producing the giant Hall effect in highly conductive frustrated magnets.

$N{:}M$ sparsity is an emerging model compression method supported by more and more accelerators to speed up sparse matrix multiplication in deep neural networks. Most existing $N{:}M$ sparsity methods compress neural networks with a uniform setting for all layers in a network or heuristically determine the layer-wise configuration by considering the number of parameters in each layer. However, very few methods have been designed for obtaining a layer-wise customized $N{:}M$ sparse configuration for vision transformers (ViTs), which usually consist of transformer blocks involving the same number of parameters. In this work, to address the challenge of selecting suitable sparse configuration for ViTs on $N{:}M$ sparsity-supporting accelerators, we propose ELSA, Exploiting Layer-wise $N{:}M$ Sparsity for ViTs. Considering not only all $N{:}M$ sparsity levels supported by a given accelerator but also the expected throughput improvement, our methodology can reap the benefits of accelerators supporting mixed sparsity by trading off negligible accuracy loss with both memory usage and inference time reduction for ViT models. For instance, our approach achieves a noteworthy 2.9$\times$ reduction in FLOPs for both Swin-B and DeiT-B with only a marginal degradation of accuracy on ImageNet. Honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnets have attracted wide attention for exploration of exotic heat transport and their interplay with magnetic excitations. In this work, we have revealed a contrasting behavior in the magneto-thermal conductivity (MTC) between two Co-based honeycomb-lattice magnets Co4M2O9 (M = Nb, Ta), despite their identical lattice structures and quite similar magnetism. Co4Ta2O9 exhibits enhanced MTC of about 550% at 9 T of an in-plane magnetic field, comparable to other honeycomb-magnets, while MTC for Co4Nb2O9 reaches only ~30%. This marked difference is ascribed to distinct features in the field-induced evolution of magnetic excitations that resonantly scatter phonons. A nonlinearly enhanced electrical reactance, $\Im Z$, under a large AC current has been measured to explore emergent inductors, which constitute a new class of inductors based on the spin-transfer torque effect. A nonlinear $\Im Z$ has been observed in conducting magnets that contain noncollinear spin textures and interpreted as the realization of an inductance due to current-induced spin dynamics. However, curious behavior has concomitantly been observed. For instance, the nonlinear $\Im Z$ always has a cutoff frequency of $10^0$--$10^4$ Hz, which is much lower than the resonance frequency of a ferromagnetic domain wall, $\sim$10$^7$ Hz; furthermore, the temperature and magnetic field variations in $\Im Z$ appear to be considerably correlated with those in the temperature derivative of resistance. This behavior appears to be difficult to understand in terms of the current-induced spin dynamics, and therefore, the earlier interpretation of the nonlinear $\Im Z$ should be further verified. Here, we theoretically and experimentally show that time-varying Joule heating and its impact on the AC electrical response can naturally explain these observations. In the experimental approach, we study the nonlinear AC electrical response of two conducting materials that exhibit no magnetic order, CuIr$_2$S$_4$ and 1$T$'-MoTe$_2$. Under time-varying Joule heating, a nonlinearly enhanced $\Im Z$ with the curious behavior mentioned above is observed in both systems. We investigate the coexistence of orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation with current fourth- and fifth-generation (4G/5G) communication systems that primarily use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms. We first derive the input-output-relation of OTFS in the considered coexisting system. In this derivation, we consider (i) the inclusion of multiple cyclic prefixes (CPs) with unequal lengths to the OTFS signal and (ii) edge carrier unloading (ECU), to account for the impacts of CP length, frame structure, and subcarrier arrangement described in 3GPP standards for 4G/5G systems. Our analysis reveals that the inclusion of multiple CPs to the OTFS signal and ECU lead to the channel response exhibiting spreading effects/leakage along the Doppler and delay dimensions, respectively. Consequently, the effective sampled delay-Doppler (DD) domain channel model for OTFS in coexisting systems may exhibit reduced sparsity. We also show that the effective DD domain channel coefficients for OTFS in coexisting systems are influenced by the unequal lengths of CPs. Subsequently, we propose an interference cancellation-based channel estimation (CE) technique for OTFS in coexisting systems. We report low-temperature powder X-ray and neutron diffraction studies on breathing pyrochlore magnets Cu$M$Cr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ ($M$ = Al, Ga), which undergo a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N} \approx$ 21 and 31 K for {$M$ = Al and Ga, respectively. X-ray diffraction reveals that the magnetic transition accompanies a structural transition from cubic $F{\overline 4}3m$ to polar orthorhombic $Imm2$ symmetry for both the compounds, with larger distortion observed for $M$ = Ga at low temperatures. Neutron diffraction reveals incommensurate magnetic modulation ${\mathbf Q} = (q_{\rm IC}, 0.5, 0)$ in the orthorhombic setting, where $q_{\rm IC} \approx$ 0.39 and 0.31 for $M$ = Al and Ga, respectively. Our magnetic-structure analysis suggests cycloid-type magnetic order but not proper-screw type for both the compounds. We find strong correlation between the local spin configuration and Cr-Cr bond lengths, indicating that the spin-lattice coupling as well as the magnetic frustration play an important role in determining the ground state. We report the magnetic, magnetoelastic, and magnetotransport properties of single crystals of polar magnets $R$AuGe ($R=$ Dy, Ho, and Gd), grown by Au-Ge self-flux. Magnetization and magnetostriction measurements reveal multi-step metamagnetic transitions for the $c$-axis magnetic field ($H\parallel c$) for DyAuGe and HoAuGe, suggesting magnetic frustration in the triangular lattice of $R$ ions. The magnetic phase diagrams have clarified a close connection between the magnetoelastic property and the emergence of the intermediate metamagentic phase. The magnetic-field dependence of the resistivity and Hall resistivity reveal the semimetallic transport dominated by hole-type carriers, consistent with the behavior in a nonmagnetic analogue YAuGe. We also identify a signature of an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) proportional to the field-induced magnetization in $R=$ Dy, Ho, and Gd. GdAuGe shows magnetic and transport behavior as reported in a previous study using Bi-flux grown single crystals, while the self-flux grown crystal shows larger magnetoresistance ($\sim$ 345\%, at 1.8 K and 9 T) due to higher hole-type carrier mobility ($\sim$ 6400 cm$^2$/Vs). Using the two-band model analysis considering the mobility change during the magnetization process, we extract the anomalous Hall conductivity: $\sim 1200$ S/cm and $\sim 530$ S/cm for $R=$ Dy and Ho, respectively, at 1.8 K with 9 T for $H\parallel c$. The magnitude of conductivity suggests a contribution of intrinsic origin, possibly related to the Berry curvature in the electron bands induced by the time-reversal symmetry breaking and the polar lattice., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

FPGAs are a promising platform for accelerating Deep Learning (DL) applications, due to their high performance, low power consumption, and reconfigurability. Recently, the leading FPGA vendors have enhanced their architectures to more efficiently support the computational demands of DL workloads. However, the two most prominent AI-optimized FPGAs, i.e., AMD/Xilinx Versal ACAP and Intel Stratix 10 NX, employ significantly different architectural approaches. This paper presents novel systematic frameworks to optimize the performance of General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM), a fundamental operation in DL workloads, by exploiting the unique and distinct architectural characteristics of each FPGA. Our evaluation on GEMM workloads for int8 precision shows up to 77 and 68 TOPs (int8) throughput, with up to 0.94 and 1.35 TOPs/W energy efficiency for Versal VC1902 and Stratix 10 NX, respectively. Skyrmion lattices (SkL) in centrosymmetric materials typically have a magnetic period on the nanometer-scale, so that the coupling between magnetic superstructures and the underlying crystal lattice cannot be neglected. Here, we reveal the commensurate locking of a SkL to the atomic lattice in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ via high-resolution resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Weak easy-plane magnetic anisotropy, demonstrated here by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and REXS, penalizes placing a skyrmion core on a site of the atomic lattice. Under these conditions, a commensurate SkL, locked to the crystal lattice, is stable at finite temperatures -- but gives way to a competing incommensurate ground state upon cooling. We discuss the role of Umklapp-terms in the Hamiltonian for the formation of this lattice-locked state, its magnetic space group, the role of slight discommensurations, or (line) defects in the magnetic texture, and contrast our findings with the case of SkLs in noncentrosymmetric material platforms., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, additional SI included (19 pages, 11 figures, 1 table)

Zintl phase EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ has garnered growing attention as an axion insulator candidate, triggered by the identification of a commensurate double-${\mathbf Q}$ broken-helix state in previous studies, however, its periodicity and symmetry remain subjects of debate. Here, we perform resonant x-ray scattering experiments on EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$, revealing an incommensurate nature of the broken-helix state, where both the wave number and the amplitude of the helical modulation exhibit systematic sample dependence. Furthermore, the application of an in-plane magnetic field brings about a broken-fanlike state preserving the double-${\mathbf Q}$ nature, which could be attributed to multiple-spin interactions in momentum space. We propose that the itinerant character of EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$, possibly induced by Eu deficiency, gives rise to the helical modulation and impedes the realization of a theoretically-predicted axion state with the collinear antiferromagnetic order., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, SM: 9 pages, 6 figures

Exploration of nontrivial magnetic states induced by strong spin-orbit interaction is a central topic of frustrated magnetism. Extensive studies are concentrated on rare-earth-based magnets and 4d/5d transition metal compounds, which are mostly described by an effective spin $S_{\text{eff}} = 1/2$ for the Kramers doublet of the lowest crystal-electric-field levels. Variety of magnetic orderings may be greatly enhanced when magnetic dipolar moments intertwined with multipolar degrees of freedom which are described by higher-rank tensors and often require the magnetic ions with $S_{\text{eff}} > 1/2$. Here, our synchrotron x-ray diffraction near the Dy $L_3$ edge has unveiled a canted antiferromagnetic ground state arising from a quasi-quartet ($S_{\text{eff}} = 3/2$) of 4f electrons in a triangular-lattice (TL) rare-earth intermetallics DyAuGe. Magnetic moment and electric-quadrupole moment are closely interlocked and noncollinear magnetic-dipole alignment is induced by antiferroic electric-quadrupole (AFQ) ordering in the TL layers. The correlation between the AFQ and canted magnetic structures is further confirmed by phase transitions in an in-plane magnetic field. Imaging antiferromagnetic 180{\deg} domains with actively controlled visibility is vital for both fundamental science and sophisticated applications. While optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a well-known technique for distinguishing such domains in non-centrosymmetric antiferromagnets, a general material-based strategy to control domain contrast remains elusive. Using van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$ as a proof of concept, we demonstrate the tuning of nonreciprocity-induced domain contrast in SHG through applying an in-plane electric field that transforms the magnetic point group to its unitary subgroup. The interference among intrinsic electric-dipole, magnetic-dipole, and field-induced electric-dipole transitions, each carrying distinct characters under space-inversion ($\mathcal{P}$) and time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) operations, enables large tuning of domain contrast and nonreciprocity in a broad spectral range. This strategy, generically applicable to systems characterized by $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric magnetic groups with a polar unitary subgroup, offers a path to fast electrical modulation of nonlinear nonreciprocal photonic behaviors using antiferromagnets.

Transition-metal atoms with d electrons sometimes form clusters in crystals, which significantly affects the physical properties. Such a cluster formation frequently accompanies a change in the crystal system, leading to the presence of domains with different crystal orientations. In particular, the cubic symmetry is rarely retained after the cluster formation. Here, we identify a cubic-to-cubic phase transition in lacunar spinel GaNb$_4$Se$_8$, where the change in the lattice parameter is less than 0.0001%. Each Nb$^{3.25+}$ tetramer with seven 4d electrons is distorted into a Nb$^{3+}$ trimer and a Nb$^{4+}$ monomer induced by charge disproportionation among Nb ions. While the Nb$^{3+}$ trimer with six 4d electrons forms spin-singlets in the sigma-bonding orbitals for three Nb-Nb bonds, a localized S=1/2 spin remains on the Nb$^{4+}$ ion. Furthermore, a local electric dipole moment is induced along the three-fold rotation axis of each distorted tetramer by the cluster rearrangement. Fairness is a growing concern for high-risk decision-making using Artificial Intelligence (AI) but ensuring it through purely technical means is challenging: there is no universally accepted fairness measure, fairness is context-dependent, and there might be conflicting perspectives on what is considered fair. Thus, involving stakeholders, often without a background in AI or fairness, is a promising avenue. Research to directly involve stakeholders is in its infancy, and many questions remain on how to support stakeholders to feedback on fairness, and how this feedback can be integrated into AI models. Our work follows an approach where stakeholders can give feedback on specific decision instances and their outcomes with respect to their fairness, and then to retrain an AI model. In order to investigate this approach, we conducted two studies of a complex AI model for credit rating used in loan applications. In study 1, we collected feedback from 58 lay users on loan application decisions, and conducted offline experiments to investigate the effects on accuracy and fairness metrics. In study 2, we deepened this investigation by showing 66 participants the results of their feedback with respect to fairness, and then conducted further offline analyses. Our work contributes two datasets and associated code frameworks to bootstrap further research, highlights the opportunities and challenges of employing lay user feedback for improving AI fairness, and discusses practical implications for developing AI applications that more closely reflect stakeholder views about fairness.

The benefits and capabilities of pre-trained language models (LLMs) in current and future innovations are vital to any society. However, introducing and using LLMs comes with biases and discrimination, resulting in concerns about equality, diversity and fairness, and must be addressed. While understanding and acknowledging bias in LLMs and developing mitigation strategies are crucial, the generalised assumptions towards societal needs can result in disadvantages towards under-represented societies and indigenous populations. Furthermore, the ongoing changes to actual and proposed amendments to regulations and laws worldwide also impact research capabilities in tackling the bias problem. This research presents a comprehensive survey synthesising the current trends and limitations in techniques used for identifying and mitigating bias in LLMs, where the overview of methods for tackling bias are grouped into metrics, benchmark datasets, and mitigation strategies. The importance and novelty of this survey are that it explores the perspective of under-represented societies. We argue that current practices tackling the bias problem cannot simply be 'plugged in' to address the needs of under-represented societies. This study examines the coexistence of orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation with current fourth- and fifth-generation (4G/5G) wireless communication systems that primarily use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms. We first derive the input-output-relation (IOR) of OTFS when it coexists with an OFDM system while considering the impact of unequal lengths of the cyclic prefixes (CPs) in the OTFS signal. We show analytically that the inclusion of multiple CPs to the OTFS signal results in the effective sampled delay-Doppler (DD) domain channel response to be less sparse. We also show that the effective DD domain channel coefficients for OTFS in coexisting systems are influenced by the unequal lengths of the CPs. Subsequently, we propose an embedded pilot-aided channel estimation (CE) technique for OTFS in coexisting systems that leverages the derived IOR for accurate channel characterization. Using numerical results, we show that ignoring the impact of unequal lengths of the CPs during signal detection can degrade the bit error rate performance of OTFS in coexisting systems. The increasing computational and memory requirements of Deep Learning (DL) workloads has led to outstanding innovations in hardware architectures. An archetype of such architectures is the novel Versal AI Engine (AIE) by AMD/Xilinx. The AIE comprises multiple programmable processors optimized for vector-based algorithms. An AIE array consisting of 400 processor cores, operating at 1.25 GHz is able to deliver a peak throughput of 8 TFLOPs for 32-bit floating-point (fp32), and 128 TOPs for 8-bit integer (int8) precision. In this work, we propose MaxEVA: a novel framework to efficiently map Matrix Multiplication (MatMul) workloads on Versal AIE devices. Our framework maximizes the performance and energy efficiency of MatMul applications by efficiently exploiting features of the AIE architecture and resolving performance bottlenecks from multiple angles. When demonstrating on the VC1902 device of the VCK190 board, MaxEVA accomplishes up to 5.44 TFLOPs and 77.01 TOPs throughput for fp32 and int8 precisions, respectively. In terms of energy efficiency, MaxEVA attains up to 124.16 GFLOPs/W for fp32, and 1.16 TOPs/W for int8. Our proposed method substantially outperforms the state-of-the-art approach by exhibiting up to 2.19x throughput gain and 20.4% higher energy efficiency. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) in vanadium dioxide VO$_2$ due to V-V dimerization has been extensively discussed for decades. While it is widely acknowledged that electron correlations, Peierls instabilities, and molecular orbital formations are crucial for understanding the MIT of VO$_2$, the primary origin of the MIT remains controversial. In this study, we delve into the crystal structure and orbital state of VO$_2$ through synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments. The molecular orbital formation corresponding to the V-V dimerization is directly observed in the low-temperature insulating monoclinic phase, called the M1 phase, as indicated by the valence electron density distribution. Moreover, diffuse scattering observed in the high-temperature metal phase of rutile structure suggests the presence of short-range correlation of V displacements, which is not directly attributed to the structural fluctuation of the M1 phase. Ultrafast and coherent generation of magnons is of great significance for high-speed antiferromagnetic spintronics. One possible route is by exciton-magnon pairwise optical excitation. To date, such exciton-magnon transitions have been studied mostly by linear optical means in a limited number of conventional three-dimensional antiferromagnets. Here we investigate this correlated transition in van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$ by using resonant second-harmonic generation spectroscopy, a nonlinear optical probe sensitive to the symmetry of electronic and magnetic excitations. Two exciton-magnon peaks are observed, in line with the exciton-induced splitting of magnon density of states predicted by a Koster-Slater type theory, indicating significant exciton-magnon interactions. In addition, a large linear magnetoelectric effect of excitons is observed. These findings provide renewed understandings on the correlation effects in two-dimensional magnets with enhanced quasiparticle scattering cross-sections, and point to potential coherent control among charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom in two-dimensional magnets by optical means.

Magnetic materials with highly anisotropic chemical bonding can be exfoliated to realize ultrathin sheets or interfaces with highly controllable optical or spintronics responses, while also promising novel cross-correlation phenomena between electric polarization and the magnetic texture. The vast majority of these van-der-Waals magnets are collinear ferro-, ferri-, or antiferromagnets, with a particular scarcity of lattice-incommensurate helimagnets of defined left- or right-handed rotation sense, or helicity. Here we use polarized neutron scattering to reveal cycloidal, or conical, magnetic structures in DyTe$_3$, with coupled commensurate and incommensurate order parameters, where covalently bonded double-slabs of dysprosium square nets are separated by highly metallic tellurium layers. Based on this ground state and its evolution in a magnetic field as probed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we establish a one-dimensional spin model with off-diagonal on-site terms, spatially modulated by the unconventional charge order in DyTe$_3$. The CDW-driven term couples to antiferromagnetism, or to the net magnetization in applied magnetic field, and creates a complex magnetic phase diagram indicative of competing interactions in an easily cleavable helimagnet.
