We introduce the LUNA neutron detector array developed for the investigation of the 13C(a,n)16O reaction towards its astrophysical s-process Gamow peak in the low-background environment of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). Eighteen 3He counters are arranged in two different configurations (in a vertical and a horizontal orientation) to optimize neutron detection effciency, target handling and target cooling over the investigated energy range Ea;lab = 300 - 400 keV (En = 2.2 - 2.6 MeV in emitted neutron energy). As a result of the deep underground location, the passive shielding of the setup and active background suppression using pulse shape discrimination, we reached a total background rate of 1.23 +- 0.12 counts/hour. This resulted in an improvement of two orders of magnitude over the state of the art allowing a direct measurement of the 13C(a,n)16O cross-section down to Ea;lab = 300 keV. The absolute neutron detection efficiency of the setup was determined using the 51V(p,n)51Cr reaction and an AmBe radioactive source, and completed with a Geant4 simulation. We report on the discovery of a very prominent mid-infrared (18-25 {\mu}m) excess associated with the trans-Neptunian dwarf planet (136472) Makemake. The excess, detected by the MIRI instrument of the James Webb Space Telescope, along with previous measurements from the Spitzer and Herschel space telescopes, indicates the occurrence of temperatures of about 150 K, much higher than what solid surfaces at Makemake's heliocentric distance could reach by solar irradiation. We identify two potential explanations: a continuously visible, currently active region, powered by subsurface upwelling and possibly cryovolcanic activity, covering <1% of Makemake's surface, or an as yet undetected ring containing very small carbonaceous dust grains, which have not been seen before in trans-Neptunian or Centaur rings. Both scenarios point to unprecedented phenomena among trans-Neptunian objects and could greatly impact our understanding of these distant worlds., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

In this work, we perform computations of inclusive jet, and semi-inclusive jet-hadron cross sections for minimum bias oxygen-oxygen collisions at RHIC and LHC collision energies. We compute the no-quenching baseline for the jet nuclear modification factor $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and jet-, and hadron-triggered semi-inclusive nuclear modification factors $I_\mathrm{AA}$. We do this with state-of-the-art nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), next-to-leading-order matrix elements, parton shower, and hadronization. We observe deviations from unity due to cold-nuclear matter effects, even without quenching. We demonstrate that the parton distribution uncertainties constitute a significant obstacle in detecting energy loss in small collision systems. Hadron-triggered observables are particularly sensitive to uncertainties due to correlations between the trigger and analyzed particles. For jet-triggered $I_\mathrm{AA}$, there exists a kinematic window in which nPDF, scale, shower, and hadronization uncertainties cancel down to percent level, overcoming a major limiting factor for energy loss discovery in small systems., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

This article addresses an innovative concept to enhance the security for IoT applications in the case of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer. This is achieved by integrating a complementary security and identification mechanism through Wireless Power Transfer link within the network of autonomous wireless nodes. This mechanism is implemented at the level of the RF rectifier used to receive energy from a dedicated RF source. A prototype of such RF rectifier has been developed, it generates in real time a backscattered waveform (uplink from the wireless node to the RF source) as function of the parameters of the incoming energy waveform (downlink from RF source) and a digital private key code, generated/available at the level of the wireless node. This uplink waveform can be monitored at the level of the RF source for security/identification purposes implementing an autonomous hardware/physical security layer that operates independently from the communication protocols.

We present a method for prediction of a person's hairstyle from a single image. Despite growing use cases in user digitization and enrollment for virtual experiences, available methods are limited, particularly in the range of hairstyles they can capture. Human hair is extremely diverse and lacks any universally accepted description or categorization, making this a challenging task. Most current methods rely on parametric models of hair at a strand level. These approaches, while very promising, are not yet able to represent short, frizzy, coily hair and gathered hairstyles. We instead choose a classification approach which can represent the diversity of hairstyles required for a truly robust and inclusive system. Previous classification approaches have been restricted by poorly labeled data that lacks diversity, imposing constraints on the usefulness of any resulting enrollment system. We use only synthetic data to train our models. This allows for explicit control of diversity of hairstyle attributes, hair colors, facial appearance, poses, environments and other parameters. It also produces noise-free ground-truth labels. We introduce a novel hairstyle taxonomy developed in collaboration with a diverse group of domain experts which we use to balance our training data, supervise our model, and directly measure fairness. We annotate our synthetic training data and a real evaluation dataset using this taxonomy and release both to enable comparison of future hairstyle prediction approaches. We employ an architecture based on a pre-trained feature extraction network in order to improve generalization of our method to real data and predict taxonomy attributes as an auxiliary task to improve accuracy. Results show our method to be significantly more robust for challenging hairstyles than recent parametric approaches.

We consider non-equilibrium dynamics after quantum quenches in the mixed-field three-state Potts quantum chain in the ferromagnetic regime. Compared to the analogous setting for the Ising spin chain, the Potts model has a much richer phenomenology, which originates partly from baryonic excitations in the spectrum and partly from the various possible relative alignments of the initial magnetisation and the longitudinal field. We obtain the excitation spectrum by combining semi-classical approximation and exact diagonalisation, and we use the results to explain the various dynamical behaviours we observe. Besides recovering dynamical confinement, as well as Wannier-Stark localisation due to Bloch oscillations similar to the Ising chain, a novel feature is the presence of baryonic excitations in the quench spectroscopy. In addition, when the initial magnetisation and the longitudinal field are misaligned, both confinement and Bloch oscillations only result in partial localisation, with some correlations retaining an unsuppressed light-cone behaviour together with a corresponding growth of entanglement entropy., Comment: 45 pages, Latex file + pdf figures

We introduce a general approximate method for calculating the one-body correlations and the momentum distributions of one-dimensional Bose gases at finite interaction strengths and temperatures trapped in smooth confining potentials. Our method combines asymptotic techniques for the long-distance behavior of the gas (similar to Luttinger liquid theory) with known short-distance expansions. We derive analytical results for the limiting cases of strong and weak interactions, and provide a general procedure for calculating one-body correlations at any interaction strength. A step-by-step explanation of the numerical method used to compute Green's functions (needed as input to our theory) is included. We benchmark our method against exact numerical calculations and compare its predictions to recent experimental results., Comment: 16 pages; 11 figures

The present paper aims to explore higher education students' spreadsheet competencies and reliability through self-assessment and real-world problem-solving practices. Digital natives alleged skills and competences allowed us to hypothesize that students perform better in Excel than on paper, but the findings cannot confirm this hypothesis. However, our results indicate that students tend to inaccurately assess their spreadsheet competencies compared to their actual performance in both paper-based and Excel tasks. It has also be found that students need at least twice as much time to achieve the same high scores in the digital environment as they do on paper. The results violated the widely accepted assumption that digital native students do not need computer science education, since they are born with it. We study the effects of integrability breaking on the relaxation dynamics of the (double) sine-Gordon model. Compared to previous studies, we apply an alternative viewpoint motivated by open-system physics by separating the phase field into homogeneous and inhomogeneous parts, describing a quantum pendulum (subsystem) and an interacting phononic bath (environment). To study the relaxation dynamics in the model, we perform quantum quenches using the mini-superspace-based truncated Hamiltonian approach developed recently and simulate the real-time evolution of various entanglement measures and the energy transfer between the subsystem and its environment. Our findings demonstrate that in the presence of integrability-breaking perturbations, the relaxation dynamics is substantially faster, signalled by the increase of entanglement and energy transfer between the quantum pendulum and the phonon bath., Comment: 9 pages, 28 figures

We study the sine-Gordon quantum field theory at finite temperature by generalizing the method of random surfaces to compute the free energy and one-point functions of exponential operators non-perturbatively. Focusing on the gapped phase of the sine-Gordon model, we demonstrate the method's accuracy by comparing our results to the predictions of other methods and to exact results in the thermodynamic limit. We find excellent agreement between the method of random surfaces and other approaches when the temperature is not too small with respect to the mass gap. We consider a PDE-constrained optimization problem of tracking type with parabolic state equation. The solution to the problem is characterized by the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system, which we formulate using a strong variational formulation of the state equation and a super weak formulation of the adjoined state equation. This allows us to propose a preconditioner that is robust both in the regularization and the diffusion parameter. In order to discretize the problem, we use Isogeometric Analysis since it allows the construction of sufficiently smooth basis functions effortlessly. To realize the preconditioner, one has to solve a problem over the whole space time cylinder that is elliptic with respect to certain non-standard norms. Using a fast diagonalization approach in time, we reformulate the problem as a collection of elliptic problems in space only. These problems are not only smaller, but our approach also allows to solve them in a time-parallel way. The isomeric ratios of $^{198}$Au, $^{197}$Hg and $^{195}$Hg produced by $\alpha$-particle induced reactions on natural platinum were investigated experimentally up to 29 MeV by using the standard stacked foil activation technique and $\gamma$-ray spectrometry. The isomeric ratios of $^{197}$Hg and $^{195}$Hg determined by the conventional activation cross section formula showed strong cooling time dependence. The time dependence was resolved by adjusting the isomeric transition branching ratios for the two isotopes within a simultaneous decay curve analysis framework. Our analysis suggests 94.5$\pm$0.7% and 48.9$\pm$1.8% as the isomeric transition branching ratios of $^{197m}$Hg (24 h) and $^{195m}$Hg (42 h), respectively. The isomeric ratios and independent production cross sections of $^{198}$Au, $^{197}$Hg, $^{195}$Hg and some other Hg, Au and Pt isotopes were also measured down to 6 MeV with these corrected isomeric transition branching ratios, and compared with predictions of statistical and pre-equilibrium models by TALYS-2.0 to discuss spin cuto? parameter dependence. We found the measured isomeric ratios are better predicted if we reduce the spin cuto? parameter to half or less from that estimated with the rigid body moment of inertia., Comment: Submitted to European Physical Journal A

Previous discussions have highlighted the need for generative AI tools to become more culturally sensitive, yet often neglect the complexities of handling content about minorities, who are perceived differently across cultures and religions. Our study examined how two generative AI systems respond to homophobic statements with varying cultural and religious context information. Findings showed ChatGPT 3.5's replies exhibited cultural relativism, in contrast to Bard's, which stressed human rights and provided more support for LGBTQ+ issues. Both demonstrated significant change in responses based on contextual information provided in the prompts, suggesting that AI systems may adjust in their responses the degree and forms of support for LGBTQ+ people according to information they receive about the user's background. The study contributes to understanding the social and ethical implications of AI responses and argues that any work to make generative AI outputs more culturally diverse requires a grounding in fundamental human rights.

We derive a systematic construction for form factors of relevant fields in the thermal perturbation of the tricritical Ising model, an integrable model with scattering amplitudes described by the $E_7$ bootstrap. We find a new type of recursive structure encoding the information in the bound state fusion structure, which fully determines the form factors of the perturbing field and the order/disorder fields, for which we present a mathematical proof. Knowledge of these form factors enables the systematic computation of correlation functions and dynamical structure factors in systems whose dynamics is governed by the vicinity of a fixed point in the tricritical Ising universality class., Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures

Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) is a spline based approach to the numerical solution of partial differential equations. There are two major issues that IgA was designed to address. The first issue is the exact representation of domains stemming from Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. In practice, this can be realized only with multi-patch IgA, often in combination with trimming or similar techniques. The second issue is the realization of high-order discretizations (by increasing the spline degree) with numbers of degrees of freedom comparable to low-order methods. High-order methods can deliver their full potential only if the solution to be approximated is sufficiently smooth; otherwise, adaptive methods are required. In the last decades, a zoo of local refinement strategies for splines has been developed. The authors think that many of these approaches are a burden to implement efficiently and impede the utilization of recent advances that rely on tensor-product splines, e.g., concerning matrix assembly and preconditioning. The implementation seems to be particularly cumbersome in the context of multi-patch IgA. Our approach is to moderately increase the number of patches and to utilize different grid sizes on different patches. The accelerated expansion of the Universe is impressively well described by a cosmological constant. However, the observed value of the cosmological constant is much smaller than expected based on quantum field theories. Recent efforts to achieve consistency in these theories have proposed a relationship between Dark Energy and the most compact objects, such as black holes (BH). However, experimental tests are very challenging to devise and perform. In this article, we present a testable model with no cosmological constant, in which the accelerated expansion can be driven by black holes. The model couples the expansion of the Universe (the Friedmann equation) with the mass-function of cosmological haloes (using the Press-Schechter formalism). Through the observed link between halo-masses and BH-masses one thus gets a coupling between the expansion rate of the Universe and the BHs. We compare the predictions of this simple BH model with SN1a data and find a poor agreement with observations. Our method is sufficiently general that it allows us to also test a fundamentally different model, also without a cosmological constant, where the accelerated expansion is driven by a new force proportional to the internal velocity dispersion of galaxies. We revisit and extend Fisher's argument for a Ginzburg-Landau description of multicritical Yang-Lee models in terms of a single boson Lagrangian with potential $\varphi^2 (i \varphi)^n$. We explicitly study the cases of $n=1,2$ by a Truncated Hamiltonian Approach based on the free massive boson perturbed by $\boldsymbol P \boldsymbol T$ symmetric deformations, providing clear evidence of the spontaneous breaking of $\boldsymbol P \boldsymbol T$ symmetry. For $n=1$, the symmetric and the broken phases are separated by the critical point corresponding to the minimal model $\mathcal M(2,5)$, while for $n=2$, they are separated by a critical manifold corresponding to the minimal model $\mathcal M(2,5)$ with $\mathcal M(2,7)$ on its boundary. In isogeometric analysis, isogeometric function spaces are employed for accurately representing the solution to a partial differential equation (PDE) on a parameterized domain. They are generated from a tensor-product spline space by composing the basis functions with the inverse of the parameterization. Depending on the geometry of the domain and on the data of the PDE, the solution might not have maximum Sobolev regularity, leading to a reduced convergence rate. In this case it is necessary to reduce the local mesh size close to the singularities. The classical approach is to perform adaptive h-refinement, which either leads to an unnecessarily large number of degrees of freedom or to a spline space that does not possess a tensor-product structure. Based on the concept of r-adaptivity we present a novel approach for finding a suitable isogeometric function space for a given PDE without sacrificing the tensor-product structure of the underlying spline space. In particular, we use the fact that different reparameterizations of the same computational domain lead to different isogeometric function spaces while preserving the geometry. Starting from a multi-patch domain consisting of bilinearly parameterized patches, we aim to find the biquadratic multi-patch parameterization that leads to the isogeometric function space with the smallest best approximation error of the solution. In order to estimate the location of the optimal control points, we employ a trained residual neural network that is applied to the graph surfaces of the approximated solution and its derivatives. In our experimental results, we observe that our new method results in a vast improvement of the approximation error for different PDE problems on multi-patch domains.

We use backward error analysis for differential equations to obtain modified or distorted equations describing the behaviour of the Newmark scheme applied to the transient structural dynamics equation. Based on the newly derived distorted equations, we give expressions for the numerically or algorithmically distorted stiffness and damping matrices of a system simulated using the Newmark scheme. Using these results, we show how to construct compensation terms from the original parameters of the system, which improve the performance of Newmark simulations. The required compensation terms turn out to be slight modifications to the original system parameters (e.g. the damping or stiffness matrices), and can be applied without changing the time step or modifying the scheme itself. Two such compensations are given: one eliminates numerical damping, while the other achieves fourth-order accurate calculations using the traditionally second-order Newmark method. The performance of both compensation methods is evaluated numerically to demonstrate their validity, and they are compared to the uncompensated Newmark method, the generalized-$\alpha$ method and the 4th-order Runge--Kutta scheme., Comment: 28 pages, 21 figures

The mathematical modeling of the propagation of illnesses has an important role from both mathematical and biological points of view. In this article, we observe an SEIR-type model with a general incidence rate and a non-constant recruitment rate function. First, we observe the qualitative properties of different methods: first-order and higher-order strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta methods \cite{shu}. We give different conditions under which the numerical schemes behave as expected. Variational quantum algorithms are viewed as promising candidates for demonstrating quantum advantage on near-term devices. These approaches typically involve the training of parameterized quantum circuits through a classical optimization loop. However, they often encounter challenges attributed to the exponentially diminishing gradient components, known as the barren plateau (BP) problem. This work introduces a novel optimization method designed to alleviate the adverse effects of BPs during circuit training. Our approach to select the optimization search direction relies on the distant features of the cost-function landscape. This enables the optimization path to navigate around barren plateaus without the need for external control mechanisms. We have successfully applied our optimization strategy to quantum circuits comprising $16$ qubits and $15000$ entangling gates, demonstrating robust resistance against BPs. Additionally, we have extended our optimization strategy by incorporating an evolutionary selection framework, enhancing its ability to avoid local minima in the landscape. The modified algorithm has been successfully utilized in quantum gate synthesis applications, showcasing a significantly improved efficiency in generating highly compressed quantum circuits compared to traditional gradient-based optimization approaches., Comment: 22 pages

Quasicondensation in one dimension is known to occur for equilibrium systems of hard-core bosons (HCBs) at zero temperature. This phenomenon arises due to the off-diagonal long-range order in the ground state, characterized by a power-law decay of the one-particle density matrix $g_1(x,y)\sim |x-y|^{-1/2}$~--~a well-known outcome of Luttinger liquid theory. Remarkably, HCBs, when allowed to freely expand from an initial product state (i.e., characterized by initial zero correlation), exhibit quasicondensation and demonstrate the emergence of off-diagonal long-range order during nonequilibrium dynamics. This phenomenon has been substantiated by numerical and experimental investigations in the early 2000s. In this work, we revisit the dynamical quasicondensation of HCBs, providing a fully analytical treatment of the issue. In particular, we derive an exact asymptotic formula for the equal-time one-particle density matrix by borrowing ideas from the framework of quantum Generalized Hydrodynamics. The detailed design and operation of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's EBIT are described for the first time, including recent design upgrades that have led to improved system stability and greater user control, increasing the scope of possible experiments. Measurements of emission from highly charged Ar were taken to determine the spatial distribution of the ion cloud and electron beam. An optical setup consisting of two lenses, a narrow band filter, and a CCD camera was used to image visible light, while an X-ray pinhole and CCD camera were used to image X-rays. Measurements were used to estimate an effective electron density of 1.77 x 10$^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$. Additionally, observations of X-ray emission from background EBIT gases were measured with a Silicon Lithium detector. Measurements indicate the presence of Ba and Si, which are both easily removed by dumping the trap every 2 s or less.

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the fourth International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to AA, which took place in February 2023 in Padua, Italy. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field of high-energy heavy-ion physics and to stimulate the formulation of concrete suggestions for making progresses on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

We consider local quenches from initial states generated by a single spin-flip in either the true or the false vacuum state of the confining quantum Ising spin chain in the ferromagnetic regime. Contrary to global quenches, where the light-cone behaviour is strongly suppressed, we find a significant light-cone signal propagating with a nonzero velocity besides the expected localised oscillating component. Combining an analytic representation of the initial state with a numerical description of the relevant excitations using the two-fermion approximation, we can construct the spectrum of post-quench excitations and their overlaps with the initial state, identifying the underlying mechanism. For confining quenches built upon the true vacuum, the propagating signal consists of superpositions of left and right-moving mesons escaping confinement. In contrast, for anti-confining quenches built upon the false vacuum it is composed of superpositions of left and right-moving bubbles which escape Wannier-Stark localisation., Comment: v2: references updated, discussion improved. v3: title changed; discussion updated

Kuiper belt objects are thought to be formed at least a few million years after the formation of calcium-aluminium-rich inclusions, at a time when the $^{26}$Al isotope -- the major source of radiogenic heat in the early Solar System -- had significantly depleted. The internal structure of these objects is highly dependent on any additional source that can produce extra heat in addition to that produced by the remaining, long-lasting radioactive isotopes. In this paper, we explore how serpentinization, the hydration of silicate minerals, can contribute to the heat budget and to what extent it can modify the internal structure of large Kuiper belt objects. We find that the extent of restructuring depends very strongly on the start time of the formation process, the size of the object, and the starting ice-to-rock ratio. Serpentinization is able to restructure most of the interior of all objects in the whole size range (400-1200\,km) and ice-to-rock ratio range investigated if the process starts early, $\sim$3\,Myr after CAI formation, potentially leading to a predominantly serpentine core much earlier than previously thought ($\leq$5\,Myr vs. several tens of million years). While the ratio of serpentinized material gradually decreases with the increasing formation time, the increasing ice-to-rock ratio, and the increasing start time of planetesimal formation in the outer solar system, in the case of the largest objects a significant part of the interior will be serpentinized even if the formation starts relatively late, $\sim$5\,Myr after CAI formation. Therefore it is feasible that the interior of planetesimals may have contained a significant amount of serpentine, and in some cases, it could have been a dominant constituent, at the time of satellite-forming impacts., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (PASP)

We set up a hydrodynamic description of the non-equilibrium dynamics of sine-Gordon quantum field theory for generic coupling. It is built upon an explicit form of the Bethe Ansatz description of general thermodynamic states, with the structure of the resulting coupled integral equations encoded in terms of graphical diagrams. The resulting framework is applied to derive results for the Drude weights of charge and energy. Quantities associated with the charge universally have fractal dependence on the coupling, which is notably absent from those associated with energy, a feature explained by the different roles played by reflective scattering in transporting these quantities. We then present far-from-equilibrium results, including explicit time evolution starting from bipartite initial states and dynamical correlation functions. One-dimensional Mott insulators can be described using the sine-Gordon model, an integrable quantum field theory that provides the low-energy effective description of several one-dimensional gapped condensed matter systems, including recent realizations with trapped ultra-cold atoms. Employing the theory of Generalized Hydrodynamics, we demonstrate that this model exhibits separation of the transport of topological charge vs. energy. Analysis of the quasiparticle dynamics reveals that the mechanism behind the separation is the reflective scattering between topologically charged kinks/antikinks. The effect of these scattering events is most pronounced at strong coupling and low temperatures, where the distribution of quasiparticles is narrow compared to the reflective scattering amplitude. This effect results in a distinctively shaped "arrowhead" light cone for the topological charge., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures

We define a new strategy to scan jet substructure in heavy-ion collisions. The scope is multifold: (i) test the dominance of vacuum jet dynamics at early times, (ii) capture the transition from coherent to incoherent jet energy loss, and (iii) study elastic scatterings in the medium, which are either hard and perturbative or soft and responsible for jet thermalisation. To achieve that, we analyse the angular distribution of the hardest splitting, $\theta_{\rm hard}$, above a transverse momentum scale, $k_t^{\rm min}$, in high-$p_t$ jets. Sufficiently high values of $k_t^{\rm min}$ target the regime in which the observable is uniquely determined by vacuum-like splittings and energy loss, leaving the jet substructure unmodified compared to proton-proton collisions. Decreasing $k_t^{\rm min}$ enhances the sensitivity to the relation between energy loss and the intra-jet structure and, in particular, to observe signatures of colour decoherence at small angles. At wider angles it also becomes sensitive to hard elastic scatterings with the medium and, therefore, the perturbative regime of medium response. Choosing $k_t^{\rm min}\approx 0$ leads to order one effects of non-perturbative origin such as hadronisation and, potentially, soft scatterings responsible for jet thermalisation. We perform a comprehensive analysis of this observable with three state-of-the-art jet-quenching Monte Carlo event generators. Nuclear spins with hyperfine coupling to single electron spins are highly valuable quantum bits. In this work we probe and characterise the particularly rich nuclear spin environment around single silicon vacancy color-centers (V2) in 4H-SiC. By using the electron spin-3/2 qudit as a 4 level sensor, we identify several groups of $^{29}$Si and $^{13}$C nuclear spins through their hyperfine interaction. We extract the major components of their hyperfine coupling via optical detected nuclear resonance, and assign them to shell groups in the crystal via the DFT simulations. We utilise the ground state level anti-crossing of the electron spin for dynamic nuclear polarization and achieve a nuclear spin polarization of up to $98\pm6\,\%$. We show that this scheme can be used to detect the nuclear magnetic resonance signal of individual spins and demonstrate their coherent control. Isogeometric analysis (IGA) is a numerical method that connects computer-aided design (CAD) with finite element analysis (FEA). In CAD the computational domain is usually represented by B-spline or NURBS patches. Given a NURBS parameterization of the domain, an isogeometric discretization is defined on the domain using the same NURBS basis as for the domain parameterization. Ideally, such an isogeometric discretization allows an exact representation of the underlying CAD model. CAD models usually represent only the boundary of the object, thus, for planar domains, it is given as a collection of curves. Finding a suitable parameterization of the interior is one of the major issues in IGA, similar to the mesh generation process in FEA. The objective of this parameterization problem is to obtain a set of patches, which exactly represent the boundary of the domain and which are parameterized regularly and without self-intersections. This can be achieved by segmenting the domain into patches which are matching along interfaces, or by covering the domain with overlapping patches. In this paper we follow the second approach. To construct from a given boundary a planar parameterization suitable for IGA, we propose an offset-based domain parameterization algorithm. Given a boundary curve, we obtain an inner curve by generalized offsetting. Those two curves define a ring-shaped patch, which has a hole that can be covered by a multi-cell domain. Consequently, the domain is represented as a union of two overlapping subdomains which are both regularly parameterized. On such a configuration, one can employ the overlapping multi-patch method introduced in (Kargaran, J\"uttler, Kleiss, Mantzaflaris, Takacs; CMAME, 2019), to solve PDEs on the given domain. The performance of the proposed method is reported in several numerical examples, considering different shapes of the domain.

We aim at constructing a smooth basis for isogeometric function spaces on domains of reduced geometric regularity. In this context an isogeometric function is the composition of a piecewise rational function with the inverse of a piecewise rational geometry parameterization. We consider two types of singular parameterizations, domains where a part of the boundary is mapped onto one point and domains where parameter lines are mapped collinearly at the boundary. We locally map a singular tensor-product patch of arbitrary degree onto a triangular patch, thus splitting the parameterization into a singular bilinear mapping and a regular mapping on a triangular domain. This construction yields an isogeometric function space of prescribed smoothness. Generalizations to higher dimensions are also possible and are briefly discussed in the final section.

We investigate numerically how onsite disorder affects conduction in the periodically driven Rice-Mele model, a prototypical realization of the Thouless pump. Although the pump is robust against disorder in the fully adiabatic limit, much less is known about the case of finite period time $T$, which is relevant also in light of recent experimental realizations. We find that at any fixed period time and nonzero disorder, increasing the system size $L\to\infty$ always leads to a breakdown of the pump, indicating Anderson localization of the Floquet states. Our numerics indicate, however, that in a properly defined thermodynamic limit, where $L/T^\theta$ is kept constant, Anderson localization can be avoided, and the charge pumped per cycle has a well-defined value -- as long as the disorder is not too strong. The critical exponent $\theta$ is not universal, rather, its value depends on the disorder strength. Our findings are relevant for practical, experimental realizations of the Thouless pump, for studies investigating the nature of its current-carrying Floquet eigenstates, as well as the mechanism of the full breakdown of the pump, expected if the disorder exceeds a critical value., Comment: 5+5 pages, 4+6 figures

In order to perform isogeometric analysis with increased smoothness on complex domains, trimming, variational coupling or unstructured spline methods can be used. The latter two classes of methods require a multi-patch segmentation of the domain, and provide continuous bases along patch interfaces. In the context of shell modeling, variational methods are widely used, whereas the application of unstructured spline methods on shell problems is rather scarce. In this paper, we therefore provide a qualitative and a quantitative comparison of a selection of unstructured spline constructions, in particular the D-Patch, Almost-$C^1$, Analysis-Suitable $G^1$ and the Approximate $C^1$ constructions. Using this comparison, we aim to provide insight into the selection of methods for practical problems, as well as directions for future research. In the qualitative comparison, the properties of each method are evaluated and compared. In the quantitative comparison, a selection of numerical examples is used to highlight different advantages and disadvantages of each method. In the latter, comparison with weak coupling methods such as Nitsche's method or penalty methods is made as well. In brief, it is concluded that the Approximate $C^1$ and Analysis-Suitable $G^1$ converge optimally in the analysis of a bi-harmonic problem, without the need of special refinement procedures. Furthermore, these methods provide accurate stress fields. On the other hand, the Almost-$C^1$ and D-Patch provide relatively easy construction on complex geometries. The Almost-$C^1$ method does not have limitations on the valence of boundary vertices, unlike the D-Patch, but is only applicable to biquadratic local bases. Following from these conclusions, future research directions are proposed, for example towards making the Approximate $C^1$ and Analysis-Suitable $G^1$ applicable to more complex geometries.

The decoherence of point defect qubits is often governed by the electron spin-nuclear spin hyperfine interaction that can be parameterized by using ab inito calculations in principle. So far most of the theoretical works have focused on the hyperfine interaction of the closest nuclear spins, while the accuracy of the predictions for distinct nuclear spins is barely discussed. We demonstrate for the case of the NV center in diamond that the absolute relative error of the computed hyperfine parameters can exceed 100\% in VASP for weakly coupled nuclear spins. To overcome this issue, we implement an alternative method and report on significantly improved hyperfine values with $O$(1\%) relative mean error at all distances. The provided accurate hyperfine data for the NV center enables high-precision simulation of NV quantum nodes for quantum information processing and positioning of nuclear spins by comparing experimental and theoretical hyperfine data.

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the quantum sine-Gordon model describing a pair of Josephson-coupled one-dimensional bosonic quasi-condensates. Motivated by experimentally accessible quench procedures where the zero mode of the quasi-condensates is weakly coupled to finite momentum modes, we develop a novel Hamiltonian truncation scheme relying on a mini-superspace treatment of the zero mode (MSTHA). We apply this method to simulate the time evolution after both weak and strong quantum quenches, injecting a low or high energy density into the system, and demonstrate that MSTHA accurately captures the dynamics from the hard core boson limit to the experimentally relevant weakly interacting regime for sufficiently mild quenches. In the case of high energy densities, MSTHA breaks down for weak interaction but still extends the range of validity of previous Hamiltonian truncation schemes. We also compare these results to the semiclassical truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) and establish that the dynamics can be well approximated by the semiclassical description in the weakly interacting regime realised in the experiments.
