The appropriate use of internal thermal mass in buildings can reduce energy consumption while maintaining thermal comfort. A prerequisite for selecting suitable internal thermal mass is to establish its relationship with indoor air temperature and heat exchange. However, there is currently a lack of analytical models to describe this relationship. This study investigates the dynamic heat transfer performance of internal thermal mass under constant indoor air temperature, exponentially declining temperatures, and sinusoidal heating and cooling conditions. The results show that under constant indoor air temperature, materials with lower thermal conductivity (e.g., plywood with 0.17 W/m·°C) generate more thermal waves and experience faster surface temperature rises compared to materials with higher conductivity (e.g., reinforced concrete with 1.74 W/m·°C). In the case of exponentially declining indoor air temperature, heat exchange per unit area decreases with increasing thickness, with plywood (0.02 m) reaching its peak temperature at 6360 s, and reinforced concrete (0.2 m) at 9900 s. For sinusoidal temperature variations, the decrement factor for plywood and reinforced concrete decreases from 0.90 to 0.59 as thickness increases from 0.02 m to 0.06 m, while the time lag increases from 1.45 h to 3.16 h. The heat exchange is primarily related to the effective thermal capacity per unit area and the storage coefficient, which are determined by the physical properties of the internal thermal mass. These findings provide a quantitative basis for estimating the impact of internal thermal mass on indoor air temperature and heat exchange in the early stages of building design.

This study presents a novel refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance, incorporating a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with a circular ring structure (CRC). Using finite element method analysis, we investigated the propagation properties of the sensor. To evaluate their influence on sensor performance, we systematically varied the parameters of each Circular Resonant Cavity structure component, including the refractive index, employing a controlled variable approach. At its optimal configuration, the sensor achieves a maximum sensitivity of 3,240 nm/RIU and a figure of merit (FOM) of 57.9. With its high sensitivity, straightforward design, and suitability for temperature detection, the refractive index sensor holds promise for diverse applications.

Based on the unique properties of optical Fano resonance and plasmonic-waveguide coupling systems, this paper explores a novel refractive index concentration sensor structure. The sensor structure is composed of a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide and two identically shaped and sized double-tooth ring couplers (DTR). The performance structure of the nanoscale refractive index sensor with DTR cavity was comprehensively assessed using the finite element method (FEM). Due to the impact of various geometric parameters on the sensing characteristics, including the rotation angles, the widths between the double-tooth rings, and the gaps between the cavity and the waveguide, we identified an optimal novel refractive index sensor structure that boasts the best performance indices. Finally, the DTR cavity sensor achieved a sensitivity of 4137 nm/RIU and Figure of merit (FOM) of 59.1. Given the high complexity and sensitivity of the overall structure, this nanoscale refractive index sensor can be applied to the detection of oil concentration in industrial oil–water mixtures, yielding highly precise results.

Within this manuscript, we provide a novel Fano resonance-driven micro-nanosensor. Its primary structural components are a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide, a shield with three disks, and a T-shaped cavity (STDTC). The finite element approach was used to study the gadget in theory. It is found that the adjustment of the structure and the change of the dimensions are closely related to the sensitivity (S) and the quality factor (FOM). Different model structural parameters affect the Fano resonance, which in turn changes the transmission characteristics of the resonator. Through in-depth experimental analysis and selection of appropriate parameters, the sensor sensitivity finally reaches 3020 nm/RIU and the quality factor reaches 51.89. Furthermore, the installation of this microrefractive index sensor allows for the quick and sensitive measurement of glucose levels. It is a positive contribution to the field of optical devices and micro-nano sensors and meets the demand for efficient detection when applied in medical and environmental scenarios.

This paper presents a novel nanoscale refractive index sensor, which is produced by using a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide structure coupled with the circular ring with an external rectangular ring (CRERR) structure with the Fano resonance phenomenon. In this study, COMSOL software was used to model and simulate the structure, paired with an analysis of the output spectra to detail the effect of constructional factors on the output Fano curve as measured from a finite element method. After a series of studies, it was shown that an external rectangular ring is the linchpin of the unsymmetrical Fano resonance, while the circular ring’s radius strongly influences the transducer’s capability to achieve a maximum for 3180 nm/RIU sensitivity and a FOM of 54.8. The sensor is capable of achieving sensitivities of 0.495 nm/mgdL−1 and 0.6375 nm/mgdL−1 when detecting the concentration of the electrolyte sodium and potassium ions in human blood and is expected to play an important role in human health monitoring.

In this work, a refractive index sensor structure is proposed, which consists of the met-al-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupling with ring resonator with a rectangular cavity. Its sensing characteristics are analyzed by the finite element analysis method. SPPs is an electromagnetic wave mode excited by the oscillatory coupling of free electron-photon interactions on the surface region of a metal, whose field strength is maximum at the metal-dielectric partition interface and then decays exponentially to both sides The results show that the sensing characteristics of the ring resonator can be changed by introducing a stub, which can achieve the purpose of enhancing the coupling efficiency of SPPs. The structure has two Fano peaks, and each peak can be individually regulated by changing the size of the sensing structure. Sensitivity is the key performance indicator of the system, which is the shift in resonance wavelength caused by a change in refractive index when the ambient medium is changed. The best sensitivity of this structure can reach 2,300 nm/RIU with a figure of merit (FOM) value of 60 RIU−1. The proposed structure has great potential in nano-sensors.

This paper introduces a refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance, utilizing a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide structure with an Anchor-like cavity. This study utilizes the finite element method (FEM) for analyzing the propagation characteristics of the structure. The evaluation concentrated on assessing how the refractive index and the structure’s geometric parameters affect its sensing characteristics. The designed structure demonstrates optimum performance, achieving a maximum sensitivity of 2440 nm/RIU and an FOM of 63. Given its high sensitivity, this nanoscale refractive index sensor is ideal for detecting hemoglobin concentrations in blood, and the sensor’s sensitivity is 0.6 nm·g/L, aiding in clinical prevention and treatment.

Based on the characteristics of plasmonic waveguides and resonators, we propose a refractive index (RI) sensor that couples a gear ring with a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide. Using the finite element method (FEM), we conduct extensive spectral analysis of the sensor’s properties in the near-infrared spectrum. Furthermore, we investigate the structural parameters affecting the refractive index sensing characteristics. This study reveals that the complexity of the ring cavity edge can significantly enhance the sensitivity of the nanosensor. Optimal structural performance parameters are selected when the number of gears is six, resulting in a sensitivity of 3102 nm/RIU and a Figure of Merit (FOM) of 57.4 for the sensing characteristics of the gear ring. It possesses the advantages of small size and high sensitivity. This nanoscale sensor design demonstrates high sensitivity in the field of industrial material temperature detection.

Aggregation always occurs in industrial processes with fractal-like particles, especially in dense systems (the volume fraction, ϕ>1%). However, the classic aggregation theory, established by Smoluchowski in 1917, cannot sufficiently simulate the particle dynamics in dense systems, particularly those of generat ed fractal-like particles. In this article, the Langevin dynamic was applied to study the collision rate of aggregations as well as the structure of aggregates affected by different volume fractions. It is shown that the collision rate of highly concentrated particles is progressively higher than that of a dilute concentration, and the SPSD (self-preserving size distribution) is approached (σg,n≥1.5). With the increase in volume fraction, ϕ, the SPSD broadens, and the geometric standard is 1.54, 1.98, and 2.73 at ϕ=0.1, 0.2, and 0.3. When the volume fraction, ϕ, is higher, the radius of gyration is smaller with the same cluster size (number-based), which means the particle agglomerations are in a tighter coagulation. The fractal-like property Df is in the range of 1.60–2.0 in a high-concentration system. Knowing the details of the collision progress in a high-concentration system can be useful for calculating the dynamics of coagulating fractal-like particles in the industrial process.

This work is intended to study the effect of background particles on vehicle emissions in representative realistic atmospheric environments. The coupling of Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equation (RANS) and Taylor-series Expansion Method Of Moments (TEMOM) is performed to track the emissions of the vehicle and simulating the evolution of the matters. The transport equation of mass, momentum, heat, and the first three orders of moments are taken into account with the effect of binary homogeneous nucleation, Brownian coagulation, condensation, and thermophoresis. The parameterization model is utilized for nucleation. The measured data for Beijing’s particle size distribution under both polluted and nonpolluted conditions are utilized as background particles. The relationship between the macroscopic measurement results and the microscopic dynamic process is analyzed by comparing the variation trend of several physical quantities in the process of aerosol evolution. It is found with an increase of background particle concentration, the nucleation is inhibited, which is consistent with the existing studies.

The potential configurations of Ge-vacancy pairs in a Ge-doped Czochralski Si (GCz-Si) crystal are identified by using first-principles theory utilizing a total-energy pseudopotential method. The studies have shown that the Ge atom introduced in the GCz-Si crystal has accumulated with the vacancy and then seeds for the Ge-vacancy pairs.
