We report the first example of oxidative cleavage of the strong C-N bonds of primary amines by a ruthenium(VI) nitrido complex. The driving force for this very fast C-N cleavage reaction comes from the formation of stable NN after the initial coupling of the amine N and the nitrido ligand.

Converting CO2 into useful resources by electrocatalysis and photocatalysis is a promising strategy for recycling of the gas and electrification of industries. Numerous studies have shown that multinuclear metal catalysts have higher selectivity and catalytic activity than monometallic catalysts due to the synergistic effects between the metal sites. In this review, we summarize some of the recent progress on the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reduction of CO2 by earth-abundant bimetallic molecular catalysts.

In the quest for designing efficient and stable photocatalytic materials for CO2 reduction, hybridizing a selective noble-metal-free molecular catalyst and carbon-based light-absorbing materials has recently emerged as a fruitful approach. In this work, we report about Co quaterpyridine complexes covalently linked to graphene surfaces functionalized by carboxylic acid groups. The nanostructured materials were characterized by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, IR and Raman spectroscopies, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and proved to be highly active in the visible-light-driven CO2 catalytic conversion in acetonitrile solutions. Exceptional stabilities (over 200 h of irradiation) were obtained without compromising the selective conversion of CO2 to products (>97%). Most importantly, complete selectivity control could be obtained upon adjusting the experimental conditions: production of CO as the only product was achieved when using a weak acid (phenol or trifluoroethanol) as a co-substrate, while formate was exclusively obtained in solutions of mixed acetonitrile and triethanolamine.

Oxidative degradation and transformation of catalysts are commonly observed in water oxidation by molecular catalysts, especially when a highly oxidizing reagent such as (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] [Ce(IV)] is used. We report herein the synthesis of a ruthenium(III) complex bearing an oxidative resistant bipyridine-bis(alkoxide) ligand, [Ru(bdalk)(pic)2]+ (1, H2bdalk = 2,2′-([2,2′-bipyridine]-6,6′-diyl)bis(propan-2-ol), pic = 4-picoline) as a water oxidation catalyst (WOC). A ruthenium(II) nitrosyl complex [Ru(Hbdalk)(NO)(pic)2]2+ (3) was also formed during the water oxidation process by 1/Ce(IV), and was isolated and structurally characterized. Complex 3 was found to be an active WOC, with the nitrosyl group remaining intact during water oxidation.

A pair of structurally-similar and stable 8-coordinate high-spin Fe(ii) and Fe(iii) compounds have been obtained. Both compounds exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. The Fe(iii) compound represents the first example of 8-coordinate Fe(iii) single-molecule magnets (SMM).

Metal oxo (M Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 O) complexes are common oxidants in chemical and biological systems. The use of Lewis acids to activate metal oxo species has attracted great interest in recent years, especially after the discovery of the CaMn4O5 cluster in the oxygen-evolving centre of photosystem II. Strong Lewis acids such as Sc3+ and BF3, as well as strong Brønsted acids such as H2SO4 and CF3SO3H, are commonly used to activate metal oxo species. In this work, we demonstrate that relatively weak Lewis acids such as Ca2+ and other group 2 metal ions, as well as weak Brønsted acids such as CH3CO2H, can readily activate the stable RuO4− complex towards the oxidation of alkanes. Notably, the use of Ca2+ and CH3CO2H together produces a remarkable cooperative effect on RuO4−, resulting in a much more efficient oxidant. DFT calculations show that Ca2+ and CH3CO2H can bind to two oxo ligands to form a chelate ring. This results in substantial lowering of the barrier for hydrogen atom abstraction from cyclohexane., Combining a weak Lewis acid and weak Brønsted acid produces strong cooperative effects for activating metal oxo species towards alkane oxidation.

Electrocatalytic water splitting is one of the most desirable ways to produce hydrogen, which is a clean and sustainable energy source. Improving the formation and the exposure of active sites is a key issue in the design of cost-effective and efficient metal-based electrocatalysts, especially for noble metals, in order to cut down the metal content and improve the mass activity of the metals, while maintaining high catalytic activity. Herein, we report a high-performance Ru-based electrocatalyst consisting of Ru single atoms and Ru nanoclusters encapsulated in highly porous N-doped carbon with abundant hierarchical pores (Ru/p-NC). Remarkably, Ru/p-NC shows excellent HER activity in 1.0 M KOH with a low overpotential of 10 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 17 mV dec−1 as well as good durability for 24 h, outperforming commercial Pt/C and Ru/C catalysts. More importantly, the mass activity and turnover frequency (based on Ru loading) of Ru/p-NC are ultrahigh owing to the low loading of Ru, which are 17 A mgRu−1 and 8.9 H2 s−1, respectively, at a very low overpotential of 25 mV. Experimental results indicate that the porous N-doped carbon support not only leads to exposed active sites but also interacts strongly with the Ru moieties. In addition, it tunes the electronic structure of the catalyst, boosts the stability as well as facilitates mass transport and charge transfer kinetics. This work provides a new route for the synthesis of metal-based porous N-doped carbon hybrid electrocatalysts with abundant exposed active sites and strong metal-support interaction for energy conversion.

The first-row transition metal compounds, [MII(L1)2](ClO4)2 (M = Ni (1); Co (2)), have been prepared by treatment of a neutral tetradentate ligand (L1 = N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide) with metal perchlorate salts in MeOH. Both compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and it was found that the coordination numbers are 6 and 7, respectively. The reaction of 6,6′-bis(2-tbutyl-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine (L2) with hydrated FeII(ClO4)2 afforded a 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound, [FeII(L2)2](ClO4)2 (3); however its reaction with hydrated CoII(ClO4)2 resulted in 6-coordinate [CoII(L2)2](ClO4)2. It is interesting to observe field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in the 7-coordinate Co(II) compound 2 and 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3, which further supports the validity of designing high coordination number compounds as single-molecule magnets. Direct current magnetic studies demonstrate that 2 has a very large positive D value (56.2 cm−1) and a small E value (0.66 cm−1), indicating easy plane magnetic anisotropy. Consistent with the larger D value, an effective spin-reversal barrier of Ueff = 100 K (71.4 cm−1) is obtained, which is the highest value reported for 7-coordinate Co(II) complexes with a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. In contrast, 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3 exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

Here, we report the use of an amphiphilic Pt(II) complex, K[Pt{(O3SCH2CH2CH2)2bzimpy}Cl] (PtB), as a model to elucidate the key role of Pt···Pt interactions in directing self-assembly by combining temperature-dependent ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, stopped-flow kinetic experiments, quantum mechanics (QM) calculations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Interestingly, we found that the self-assembly mechanism of PtB in aqueous solution follows a nucleation-free isodesmic model, as revealed by the temperature-dependent UV-Vis experiments. In contrast, a cooperative growth is found for the self-assembly of PtB in acetone–water (7:1, vol/vol) solution, which is further verified by the stopped-flow experiments, which clearly indicates the existence of a nucleation phase in the acetone–water (7:1, vol/vol) solution. To reveal the underlying reasons and driving forces for these self-assembly processes, we performed QM calculations and show that the Pt···Pt interactions arising from the interaction between the pz and dz2 orbitals play a crucial role in determining the formation of ordered self-assembled structures. In subsequent oligomer MD simulations, we demonstrate that this directional Pt···Pt interaction can indeed facilitate the formation of linear structures packed in a helix-like fashion. Our results suggest that the self-assembly of PtB in acetone–water (7:1, vol/vol) solution is predominantly driven by the directional noncovalent Pt···Pt interaction, leading to the cooperative growth and the formation of fibrous nanostructures. On the contrary, the self-assembly in aqueous solution forms spherical nanostructures of PtB, which is primarily due to the predominant contribution from the less directional hydrophobic interactions over the directional Pt···Pt and π−π interactions that result in an isodesmic growth.

Photochemical reactions of (PPh4)[OsVI(N)(L)(CN)3] (NO2-OsN) with piperidine and pyrrolidine afforded two osmium(v) hydrazido compounds, (PPh4)[OsV(L)(CN)3(NNC5H10)] ([PPh4]1) and (PPh4)[OsV(L)(CN)3(NNC4H8)] ([PPh4]2), respectively. Their structures consist of isolated, mononuclear distorted octahedral osmium anions that are well-separated from each other by PPh4+. Their low spin S = 1/2 and L = 1 ground state was confirmed by magnetometry and DFT calculations. Interestingly, both compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under a bias dc-field. These osmium(v) complexes are potentially useful building-blocks for the construction of molecule-based architectures with interesting magnetic properties. In contrast, the structurally related (PPh4)[OsIII(L)(CN)3(NH3)] ([PPh4]3), which also has a low-spin S = 1/2 ground state but with a different electronic configuration (5d5), does not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation, due to the absence of any orbital moment (L = 0). Furthermore, the structurally different osmium(v) hydrazido compound reported by Meyer, [OsV(tpy)(Cl)2(NNC5H10)](PF6) (4[PF6]), also does not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation due possibly to a change in magnetic anisotropy from axial for [PPh4]1 and [PPh4]2 to planar.

The iron(II) complex bearing the 2,2′:6′,2′′:6′′,2′′′:6′′′,2′′′′-quinquepyridine (qnpy) ligand, [Fe(qnpy)(H2O)2]2+, is a highly efficient and robust catalyst for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO in aqueous acetonitrile solution. A turnover number (TON) for CO of up to 14 095 with 98% selectivity can be achieved using Ru(phen)3Cl2 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) as the photosensitizer and BIH (1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole) as the sacrificial reductant in a CO2-saturated MeCN/H2O (1 : 1, v/v) solution under visible light irradiation. This Fe complex is state-of-the-art for CO2 visible-light-driven catalysis.

The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of intense interest because H2 is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. Herein, we report a highly efficient and stable HER electrocatalyst composed of ruthenium nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (NC), which is synthesized via a simple thermolysis process using a ruthenium complex as metal precusor and using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tetrasodium (Na4EDTA) salt as ligand and carbon source. It is found that the amount of Na4EDTA employed plays an important role in achieving sutiable and uniform Ru nanoparticles. The resulting Ru@NC(1 : 5) was found to exhibit excellent HER activity and robust stability in alkaline media (1.0 M KOH) with a low overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 (29 mV), small Tafel slope (27 mV per decade) and a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.96 s−1 at an overpotential of 50 mV, which are comparable to the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. Based on the characterization of the samples and the electrochemical measurements, this high performance of Ru@NC(1 : 5) is ascribed to its smallest particle size (ca. 2.1 nm diameter), large active site density and the high electrochemical conductivity by the N-doped carbon support. In addition, Ru@NC(1 : 5) also works well in acidic media (0.5 M H2SO4) indicating it is a pH-universal catalyst.

Artificial photosynthesis is considered as one of the most promising strategies for solar-to-fuel conversion through sunlight-driven water splitting and CO2 reduction. This tutorial describes recent developments in the use of metal quaterpyridine complexes as electrocatalyts and photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis.

Efficient and selective photocatalytic CO

Oxidative degradation and transformation of catalysts are commonly observed in water oxidation by molecular catalysts, especially when a highly oxidizing reagent such as (NH

Manganese complexes in +6 oxidation state are rare. Although a number of Mn(VI) nitrido complexes have been generated in solution via one-electron oxidation of the corresponding Mn(V) nitrido species, they are too unstable to isolate. Herein we report the isolation and the X-ray structure of a Mn(VI) nitrido complex, [MnVI(N)(TAML)]- (2), which was obtained by one-electron oxidation of [MnV(N)(TAML)]2- (1). 2 undergoes N atom transfer to PPh3 and styrenes to give Ph3P═NH and aziridines, respectively. A Hammett study for various p-substituted styrenes gives a V-shaped plot; this is rationalized by the ability of 2 to function as either an electrophile or a nucleophile. 2 also undergoes hydride transfer reactions with NADH analogues, such as 10-methyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (AcrH2) and 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH). A kinetic isotope effect of 7.3 was obtained when kinetic studies were carried out with AcrH2 and AcrD2. The reaction of 2 with NADH analogues results in the formation of [MnV(N)(TAML-H+)]- (3), which was characterized by ESI/MS, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. These results indicate that this reaction occurs via an initial "separated CPET" (separated concerted proton-electron transfer) mechanism; that is, there is a concerted transfer of 1 e- + 1 H+ from AcrH2 (or BNAH) to 2, in which the electron is transferred to the MnVI center, while the proton is transferred to a carbonyl oxygen of TAML rather than to the nitrido ligand.

Room temperature aerobic oxidation of hydrocarbons is highly desirable and remains a great challenge. Here we report a series of highly electrophilic cobalt(III) alkylperoxo complexes, CoIII(qpy)OOR supported by a planar tetradentate quaterpyridine ligand that can directly abstract H atoms from hydrocarbons (R'H) at ambient conditions (CoIII(qpy)OOR + R'H → CoII(qpy) + R'• + ROOH). The resulting alkyl radical (R'•) reacts rapidly with O2 to form alkylperoxy radical (R'OO•), which is efficiently scavenged by CoII(qpy) to give CoIII(qpy)OOR' (CoII(qpy) + R'OO• → CoIII(qpy)OOR'). This unique reactivity enables CoIII(qpy)OOR to function as efficient catalysts for aerobic peroxidation of hydrocarbons (R'H + O2 → R'OOH) under 1 atm air and at room temperature.

Microbial conversion of methane to electricity, fuels, and liquid chemicals has attracted much attention. However, due to the low solubility of methane, it is not considered a suitable substrate for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this study, a conductive fiber membrane (CFM) module was constructed as the bioanode of methane-driven MFCs, directly delivering methane. After biofilm formation on the CFM surface, a steady voltage output of 0.6 to 0.7 V was recorded, and the CFM-MFCs obtained a maximum power density of 64 ± 2 mW/m2. Moreover, methane oxidation produced a high concentration of intermediate acetate (up to 7.1 mM). High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing suggests that the microbial community was significantly changed after electricity generation. Methane-related archaea formed a symbiotic consortium with characterized electroactive bacteria and fermentative bacteria, suggesting a combination of three types of microorganisms for methane conversion into acetate and electricity.

In the quest for designing efficient and stable photocatalytic materials for CO

A Fe quaterpyridine complex was used as a molecular precursor for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CH4 in acetonitrile in the presence of triethanolamine. CH4 was produced with a faradaic yield of approximately 2.1 % at 25 °C and 1 atm pressure of CO2 as reactant. Controlled potential electrolysis coupled to ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the electrode surface revealed the formation of metallic iron covered by iron oxides as species responsible for catalysis.

The synthesis and X-ray structure of a new manganese(V) mesitylimido complex with a tetraamido macrocyclic ligand (TAML), [MnV (TAML)(N-Mes)]- (1), are reported. Compound 1 is oxidized by [(p-BrC6 H4 )3 N]+. [SbCl6 ]- and the resulting MnVI species readily undergoes H-atom transfer and nitrene transfer reactions.

It is highly desirable to discover molecular catalysts with controlled selectivity for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction to fuels. In the design of catalysts employing earth-abundant metals, progress has been made for CO production, but formate generation has been observed more rarely. Here, we report a binuclear Co complex bearing a bi-quaterpyridine ligand that can selectively reduce CO2 to HCOO− or CO under visible light irradiation. Selective formate production (maximum of 97%) was obtained with a turnover number of up to 821 in basic acetonitrile solution. Conversely, in the presence of a weak acid, CO2 reduction affords CO with high selectivity (maximum of 99%) and a maximum turnover number of 829. The catalytic process is controlled by the two Co atoms acting synergistically, and the selectivity can be steered towards the desired product by simply changing the acid co-substrate. Performing photocatalytic CO2 reduction in a selective fashion with molecular catalysts represents a considerable challenge. Here, a binuclear cobalt complex featuring a bi-quaterpyridine ligand is developed that can selectively afford either carbon monoxide or formate by selection of the reaction medium acidity.

Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) is the process of coupling the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) with denitrification, which plays an important part in controlling the flow of methane in anoxic niches. In this study, we explored the feasibility of microbial selenite reduction using methane by DAMO culture. Isotopic 13CH4 and long-term experiments showed that selenite reduction was coupled to methane oxidation, and selenite was ultimately reduced to Se (0) by the analyses of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The introduction of nitrate, the original electron acceptor in the DAMO culture, inhibited selenite reduction. Meanwhile, the microbial community of DAMO culture was significantly changed when the electron acceptor was changed from nitrate to selenite after long-term selenite reduction. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that Methylococcus (26%) became the predominant microbe performing selenite reduction and methane oxidation and the possible pathways of AOM accompanied with selenite reduction were proposed. This study revealed more potential relation during the biogeochemical cycle of carbon, nitrogen, and selenium.

A series of lanthanide (Ln) compounds, [EuIII(L)2(MeOH)(H2O)](ClO4)3 (1), [TbIII(L)2(H2O)](Cl3) (2) and [MIII(L)2(NO3)](ClO4)2 (M = Eu (3); Sm (4); Tb (5); Dy (6)), have been prepared by the treatment of a neutral tetra-dentate ligand (N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, L) with various Ln(III) salts in MeOH. All of the compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. It is noted that the anions of the Ln(III) salts play crucial roles in the solid-state structures and the properties of the resulting complexes. In compounds 1 and 2, the metal centres are 10- and 9-coordinated, respectively, which are surrounded by two L ligands and solvent molecules. When the nitrate salts are used instead, four isostructural 10-coordinate Ln(III) compounds are obtained. The photophysical properties show that most of the compounds exhibit the characteristic emission peaks of Ln(III). Ligand L acts as a very good ‘antenna’ to sensitize the Eu(III) emission, but not for other Ln(III) emissions. The quantum yield of 3 is 75.4%, which is much higher than that of 1 (17.6%) due to the –OH oscillators of the coordinated H2O and MeOH molecules in 1. The magnetic properties of the Tb(III) compounds 2 and 5 and the Dy(III) compound 6 were investigated in detail as a natural extension of our previous study of the effect of high-coordination number on the single-ion magnet (SIM) behaviour of 3d compounds. The results show that subtle changes in the coordination environment have significant effects on the magnetic behaviour. The 9-coordinate compound 2 is not a single ion magnet (SIM), but both 10-coordinate compounds 5 and 6 exhibit field-induced SIM behaviour. It is also interesting to note that, upon the application of a small dc field, 5 exhibits two distinct relaxation processes, which is uncommon in Ln-based SIMs.

A new pentadentate quinoline-pyridine ligand and its iron (1), cobalt (2) and nickel (3) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The iron complex exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity towards CO2-to-CO conversion with a TON(CO) of 544 and a selectivity of 99.3% using the commercially available organic dye purpurin as the photosensitiser and BIH as the electron donor. In contrast, the cobalt and nickel complexes result in very low activity for CO production with a TON of only 8 and 15, respectively. On the other hand, all the three complexes show good electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction when using 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol as the proton source with the active intermediate of M0 species. The lack of activity in photocatalytic CO2 reduction by 2 and 3 can be attributed to the redox potential of MI/M0 which is significantly more negative than that of PP-/PP2- while in the case of 1 the FeI/Fe0 redox potential becomes more positive than that of the PP-/PP2- couple.

The profile of 11 trace metals in two commonly used biomonitors (the native oyster Crassostrea palmula and mussel Mytella strigata) from Estero de Urias lagoon, Gulf of California, were studied for six months, covering both dry and wet seasons. Metal concentrations in these two bivalves were compared with concentrations accumulated by Artificial Mussels (AMs) deployed alongside during the same period. Significant temporal variations in Cd, Cr and Mn were observed in both bivalve species and AMs. Temporal changes were observed for Fe in both bivalve species, Pb in oyster only and Cu in both AMs and oysters, revealing seasonal changes in inputs and/or chemical forms of these metals in the lagoon. Significant correlations for Cd, Cr and Cu were found in mussels and oysters, but their Co, Fe, Mn and Zn profiles were very different, despite these two species being taxonomically closely related and often used as biomonitors for metals. Interestingly, Hg and U were detected in AMs but not in oysters and mussels. The difference in metal profile in oysters, mussels and AMs revealed in the present study clearly showed that different biomonitors and AM take up metals differentially from the same environment, and metal profile in a single biomonitor or AM alone therefore, cannot provide a good estimate on metal concentrations in the ambient environment. As such, different biomonitors and AM should be used in metal monitoring, in order to provide a comprehensive picture on metal levels in aquatic ecosystems. Concentrations of Ni and Pb in oysters, and Cr, Fe and Mn in mussels were among the highest reported in coastal waters worldwide. Concentrations of Pb in oysters exceeded legal limits set for bivalve mollusks in EU. Concentrations of Cr in mussels and oysters exceeded or were very close to, respectively, the legal limit for fish, crab-meat, oysters, prawns, and shrimps in Hong Kong. The results indicate a potential public health risk on human consumption of oysters and mussels commonly harvested from the Estero de Urias lagoon, and corresponding pollution control measures are deemed necessary.

Ferrate(VI), [FeO4]2−, is a very powerful oxidant that can oxidize a wide variety of inorganic and organic compounds. However, the mechanisms of many of these oxidation reactions have not been studied in detail. In this work, we have investigated the kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of 4-alkylbenzenesulfonates by ferrate in aqueous solutions at pH 7.45–9.63 by UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The reactions are first order with respect to both [ferrate] and [4-alkylbenzenesulfonate]. The second-order rate constants for the oxidation of 4-isopropylbenzenesulfonate by ferrate at 25 °C and I = 0.3 M are found to be (5.86 ± 0.08) × 10−1 M−1 s−1 and (4.11 ± 1.50) × 10−3 M−1 s−1 for [Fe(O)3(OH)]− and [FeO4]2−, respectively, indicating that [Fe(O)3(OH)]− is two orders of magnitude more reactive than [FeO4]2− and is the predominant oxidant in neutral and slightly alkaline solutions. This is further supported by the effect of the ionic strength on the rate constant. No solvent kinetic isotope effect (KIE) was found but a moderate primary KIE = 1.6 ± 0.1 was observed in the oxidation of 4-ethylbenzenesulfonate and 4-ethylbenzenesulfonate-d9. Alkyl radicals were trapped by CBrCl3 in the oxidation of alkylarenes by ferrate. Combined with DFT calculations, a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism was proposed for the reactions between [Fe(O)3(OH)]− and 4-alkylbenzenesulfonates.

Artificial photosynthesis is considered as one of the most promising strategies for solar-to-fuel conversion through sunlight-driven water splitting and CO2 reduction. This tutorial describes recent developments in the use of metal quaterpyridine complexes as electrocatalyts and photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis.

The high toxicity and prevalence of arsenic in the environment have aroused increasing research interest in understanding the mechanisms of microbial arsenic resistance. A wide spectrum of arsenic resistant microbes with ability of arsenic bio-transformation has been isolated from arsenic-contaminated environments. However, arsenic resistance processes and reduction abilities of microbes under various growth conditions remain poorly understood. In this work, a high correlation between the arsenic resistance and reduction ability of Aeromonas hydrophila and the carbon substrate was identified. Genome analysis suggests that the arsenic resistance system is widely present in Aeromonas genus, and the arsenic resistance was associated with the ars operon. The sensitivity of A. hydrophila to As(V) and As(III) depended heavily on the type of carbon substrate. The upregulated expression of arsA, arsB, arsD and/or downregulated expression of glpF might be responsible for the increased microbial tolerance to As(III). The As(V) reduction rate was also affected by the type of carbon substrate. Our results provide new insights into the impacts of carbon substrate on the arsenic biotoxicity as well as arsenic biotransformation processes.

Targeted anticancer prodrugs that can be controllably activated are highly desired for personalized precision medicine in cancer therapy. Such prodrugs with unique action modes are also promising to overcome drug resistance. Herein, we report coumaplatin, an oxaliplatin-based and photocaged Pt(IV) prodrug, to realize nuclear accumulation along with "on-demand" activation. This prodrug is based on a Pt(IV) complex that can be efficiently photoactivated via water oxidation without the requirement of a reducing agent. Coumaplatin accumulates very efficiently in the nucleoli, and upon photoactivation, this prodrug exhibits a level of photocytotoxicity up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of oxaliplatin. Unexpectedly, this prodrug presents strikingly enhanced tumor penetration ability and utilizes a distinct action mode to overcome drug resistance; i.e., coumaplatin but not oxaliplatin induces cell senescence, p53-independent cell death, and immunogenic cell death along with T cell activation. Our findings not only provide a novel strategy for the rational design of controllably activated and nucleolus-targeted Pt(IV) anticancer prodrugs but also demonstrate that accumulating conventional platinum drugs to the nucleus is a practical way to change its canonical mechanism of action and to achieve reduced resistance.

International audience; Achieving visible-light-driven carbon dioxide reduction with high selectivity control and durability while using only earth abundant elements requires new strategies. Hybrid catalytic material was prepared upon covalent grafting a Co–quaterpyridine molecular complex to semiconductive mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) through an amide linkage. The molecular material was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including XPS, IR, and impedance spectroscopy. It proved to be a selective catalyst for CO production in acetonitrile using a solar simulator with a high 98% selectivity, while being remarkably robust since no degradation was observed after 4 days of irradiation (ca. 500 catalytic cycles). This unique combination of a selective molecular catalyst with a simple and robust semiconductive material opens new pathways for CO2 catalytic light-driven reduction.

Efficient and selective photostimulated CO2-to-CO reduction by a photocatalytic system consisting of an iron-complex catalyst and a mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) redox photosensitizer is reported for the first time. Irradiation in the visible region (λ ≥ 400 nm) of an CH3CN/triethanolamine (4:1, v/v) solution containing [Fe(qpy)(H2O)2]2+ (qpy = 2,2′:6′,2′′:6′′,2′′-quaterpyridine) and mpg-C3N4 resulted in CO evolution with 97% selectivity, a turnover number of 155, and an apparent quantum yield of ca. 4.2%. This hybrid catalytic system, comprising only earth abundant elements, opens new perspectives for solar fuels production using CO2 as a renewable feedstock.

Associating a metal-based catalyst to a carbon-based nanomaterial is a promising approach for the production of solar fuels from CO2 . Upon appending a CoII quaterpyridine complex [Co(qpy)]2+ at the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, CO2 conversion into CO was realized in water at pH 7.3 with 100 % catalytic selectivity and 100 % Faradaic efficiency, at low catalyst loading and reduced overpotential. A current density of 0.94 mA cm-2 was reached at -0.35 V vs. RHE (240 mV overpotential), and 9.3 mA cm-2 could be sustained for hours at only 340 mV overpotential with excellent catalyst stability (89 095 catalytic cycles in 4.5 h), while 19.9 mA cm-2 was met at 440 mV overpotential. Such a hybrid material combines the high selectivity of a homogeneous molecular catalyst to the robustness of a heterogeneous material. Catalytic performances compare well with those of noble-metal-based nano-electrocatalysts and atomically dispersed metal atoms in carbon matrices.
