Dentro del campo del crecimiento y desarrollo, el cálculo antropométrico, es una de las herramientas más utilizadas para encontrar indicadores válidos del estado general del crecimiento biológico de una población en su interacción con los diversos factores sociales. Frente al evidente proceso de pauperización por el que viene transcurriendo el país, la evaluación del estado nutricional de la población infantil, tanto en sus aspectos poblacionales como individuales, se hace necesaria y cotidiana. Presentamos aquí un software de escritorio que permite el cálculo y la graficación de las principales variables antropométricas. El E.V.A. 1.0 (Evaluación y Visualización Antropométrica) brinda también la posibilidad de almacenar los datos, de incorporar tablas de comparación (por default el sistema trae las tablas de la SAP y del NCHS), y de exportar la información al programa EPINFO y a la mayoría de las aplicaciones estándar de escritorio (planillas de cálculo, procesadores de texto, etc.). La aplicación posee también una modalidad de sugerencias de diagnóstico, con referencias bibliográficas, que puede ser de ayuda, tanto para el profesional de A.P.S. como para el investigador.

Background: Novel circulating markers for the non-invasive staging of chronic liver disease (CLD) are in high demand. Although underutilized, extracellular matrix (ECM) components offer significant diagnostic potential. This study evaluates ECM-related markers in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive patients across varying fibrosis stages., Methods: Sixty-eight patients with mild-to-moderate fibrosis (F1-F2), sixty-six with advanced fibrosis (F3-F4), and thirty healthy donors were recruited. Inclusion criteria were detectable HCV-RNA and no other liver diseases or co-infections. Levels of ECM markers-hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN), collagen-III N-peptide (PIIIP N-P), collagen-IV (C-IV)-along with cholylglycine (CG) and Golgi protein-73 (GP73), were measured in serum using the MAGLUMI 800 CLIA platform., Results: Levels of LN, HA, C-IV, PIIIP N-P (p < 0.001), and GP73 (p < 0.01) increased from controls to F1-F2 and F3-F4. CG levels were higher in pathological subjects compared to controls (p < 0.001), but no significant differences emerged between fibrosis stages. These trends persisted after adjusting for age and sex. A multivariate ordinal regression identified LN, PIIIP N-P, and C-IV as promising markers, with an accuracy of 0.77. An XGBoost model improved accuracy to 0.87 and enhanced other metrics. SHAP analysis confirmed these variables as key contributors to the model's predictions., Conclusion: This study underscores the potential of ECM biomarkers, particularly LN, PIIIP N-P, and C-IV, in non-invasively staging CLD. Furthermore, our preliminary data suggest that a machine learning approach, combined with explainable AI, could further enhance diagnostic accuracy, potentially reducing the need for invasive biopsies., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Scientists and managers seek to implement more inclusive and effective conservation strategies by incorporating plural valuations of nature and nature's contributions to people (NCP) into research and decision-making. For Argentina's threatened Espinal ecoregion, this need is particularly acute. In Entre Ríos province, practically all of these forests are devoted to production, and the expanding agricultural frontier increases their conversion to crops. We surveyed family ranchers and agricultural/environmental specialists, two key stakeholders for managing Espinal forests used for cattle grazing. Employing a sociocultural valuation, we determined i) stakeholder recognition of the Espinal's NCP and its support for quality of life, ii) similarity between stakeholder valuations (importance: 0 = none; 4 = very) of NCP and dimensions of well-being derived from the Espinal, and iii) relationship between ecological (e.g., forest degradation) and social (e.g., place of residence) factors and perceptions of the forest. Ranchers recognized more NCP and quality-of-life aspects, and the importance to their well-being tended to be greater than specialists. Both groups valued regulating and non-material NCP above material contributions and considered that forests are very important for physical and mental health. Finally, only rancher perceptions varied with tested variables, depending on degradation levels of forests with which they have the most contact and/or carry out their activities, the number of uses and recreational activities they carry out in forests, their knowledge of forests, and their place of residence. Chronic liver diseases (CLD) stem from various causes and lead to a gradual progression that ultimately may result in fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis. This process is typically prolonged and asymptomatic, characterized by the complex interplay among various cell types, signaling pathways, extracellular matrix components, and immune responses. With the prevalence of CLD increasing, diagnoses are often delayed, which leads to poor prognoses and in some cases, the need for liver transplants. Consequently, there is an urgent need for the development of novel, non-invasive methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of CLD. In this context, serum biomarkers-safer, repeatable, and more acceptable alternatives to tissue biopsies-are attracting significant research interest, although their clinical implementation is not yet widespread. This review summarizes the latest advancements in serum biomarkers for detecting hepatic fibrogenesis and advocates for concerted efforts to consolidate current knowledge, thereby providing patients with early, effective, and accessible diagnoses that facilitate personalized therapeutic strategies.

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. Physiological changes were explored in fatty acids (FA) and carbohydrate (CHO) composition in the shredder Calamoceras marsupus larvae (Trichoptera) and leaf litter (C. marsupus food) exposed to copper and uranium under natural and experimental conditions. We measured FA and CHO content in leaf litter and larvae specimens from reference and impacted streams, and exposed for 5 weeks to four realistic environmental concentrations of copper (35 μg L -1 and 70 μg L -1 ) and uranium (25 μg L -1 and 50 μg L -1 ). Regarding FA, (1) leaf litter had a reduced polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) content in metal treatments, s (14 to 33% of total FA), compared to natural conditions (≥39% of total FA). Leaf litter exposed to uranium also differed in saturated FA (SFA) composition, with lower values in natural conditions and higher values under low uranium concentrations. (2) C. marsupus had/showed low PUFA content under Cu and U exposure, particularly in high uranium concentrations. Detritivores also decreased in PUFA under exposure to both metals, particularly in high uranium concentrations. On the other hand, (1) microorganisms of the biofilm colonizing leaf litter differed in CHO composition between natural (impacted and reference) and experimental conditions, with glucose and galactose being consistently the most abundant sugars, found in different amounts under copper or uranium exposure; (2) CHO of detritivores showed similar high galactose and fucose concentrations in contaminated streams and high copper treatments, whereas low copper treatment showed distinct CHO profiles, with higher mannose, glucose, arabinose, and fucose concentrations. Background: The nucleolus is a subnuclear, non-membrane bound domain that is the hub of ribosome biogenesis and a critical regulator of cell homeostasis. Rapid growth and division of cells in tumors are correlated with intensive nucleolar metabolism as a response to oncogenic factors overexpression. Several members of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) family, have been identified in the nucleus and nucleolus of many cancer cells, but their function in these compartments remains unexplored., Results: We focused our research on the nucleolar function that a specific member of EGFR family, the ErbB3 receptor, plays in glioblastoma, a tumor without effective therapies. Here, Neuregulin 1 mediated proliferative stimuli, promotes ErbB3 relocalization from the nucleolus to the cytoplasm and increases pre-rRNA synthesis. Instead ErbB3 silencing or nucleolar stress reduce cell proliferation and affect cell cycle progression., Conclusions: These data point to the existence of an ErbB3-mediated non canonical pathway that glioblastoma cells use to control ribosomes synthesis and cell proliferation. Background: Closed reduction and splinting followed by outpatient management is standard of care for temporizing most ankle fractures. However, ankle fracture-dislocation potentially warrants a different approach based on the propensity for loss of reduction. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of complications associated with closed reduction and splinting of unstable ankle fracture-dislocations. Further, we sought to determine the efficacy of immediate external fixation as an alternative to splinting in cases too swollen for acute operation., Methods: This retrospective chart review analyzed all ankle-fracture dislocations that came through a large health care system from 2008 to 2018. Patients managed with acute open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) and open fractures were excluded. In patients managed late, the cohorts were divided into those temporized with closed reduction/splinting vs external fixation. Reduction quality and splint technique were additionally assessed in splinted patients. A total of 354 closed ankle fracture-dislocations were identified: 298 patients (84%) underwent ORIF within 48 hours and were excluded; 28 (15 female/13 male, average age 46.8 years) were placed in an external fixator and 28 (22 female/6 male, average age 57.2 years) were reduced, splinted, and discharged., Results: At follow-up, 14 of the patients (50%) in the splint group developed loss of reduction and 5 of these patients (17.6%) developed anteromedial skin necrosis from skin tenting. None of the patients in the ex-fix group developed loss of reduction or skin necrosis. The rate of redislocation and the rate of development of skin necrosis was statistically higher in cases temporized with a splint versus an external fixator ( P < .01 and P = .05, respectively)., Conclusion: We found that in ankle fracture-dislocations not treated with acute ORIF, splint immobilization was associated with an increased risk of complications, including redislocation and skin necrosis, when compared to a temporizing external fixator., Level of Evidence: Level III, retrospective comparative study.
