Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) operation is one of the open issues to be solved for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems to become a pillar of the future wireless infrastructure above 10 GHz. Existing NLOS countermeasures use either metallic mirrors, that are limited in coverage, or reconfigurable metasurfaces, that are limited in size due to cost. This paper focuses on integrated imaging and communication (IIAC) systems for NLOS exploration, where a base station (BS) serves the users while gathering a high-resolution image of the area. We exploit a large reflection plane, that is phase-configured in space and time jointly with a proper BS beam sweeping to provide a multi-view observation of the area and maximizing the image resolution. Remarkably, we achieve a near-field imaging through successive far-field acquisitions, limiting the design complexity and cost. Sensing in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) is a well-known issue that limits the effective range of radar-like sensors. Existing approaches for NLOS sensing consider the usage of either metallic mirrors, that only work under specular reflection, or dynamically-reconfigurable metasurfaces that steer the signal to cover a desired area in NLOS, with the drawback of cost and control signaling. This paper proposes a novel sensing system, that allows a source to image a desired region of interest (ROI) in NLOS, using the combination of a proper beam sweeping (by the source) as well as a passive reflection plane configured as a periodic angular deflecting function (that allows illuminating the ROI). \textit{Stroboscopic sensing} is obtained by sweeping over a sufficiently large portion of the reflection plane, the source covers the ROI \textit{and} enhance the spatial resolution of the image, thanks to multiple diverse observation angles of ROI. Remarkably, the proposed system achieves a near-field imaging with a sequence of far-field acquisitions, thus limiting the implementation complexity. The sixth generation (6G) of wireless networks introduces integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), a technology in which communication and sensing functionalities are inextricably linked, sharing resources across time, frequency, space, and energy. Despite its popularity in communication, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform, while advantageous for communication, has limitations in sensing performance within an ISAC network. This paper delves into OFDM waveform design through optimal resource allocation over time, frequency, and energy, maximizing sensing performance while preserving communication quality. During quasi-normal operation, the Base Station (BS) does not utilize all available time-frequency resources, resulting in high sidelobes in the OFDM waveform's ambiguity function, as well as decreased sensing accuracy. To address these latter issues, the paper proposes a novel interpolation technique using matrix completion through the Schatten p quasi-normal approximation, which requires fewer samples than the traditional nuclear norm for effective matrix completion and interpolation. This approach effectively suppresses the sidelobes, enhancing the sensing performance. Numerical simulations confirm that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art frameworks, such as standard complaint resource scheduling and interpolation, particularly in scenarios with limited resource occupancy.

Electromagnetic skins (EMSs) are recognized for enhancing communication performance, spanning from coverage to capacity. While much of the scientific literature focuses on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that dynamically adjust phase configurations over time, this study takes a different approach by considering low-cost static passive curved EMS (CEMS)s. These are pre-configured during manufacturing to conform to the shape of irregular surfaces, e.g., car doors, effectively transforming them into anomalous mirrors. This design allows vehicles to serve as opportunistic passive relays, mitigating blockage issues in vehicular networks. This paper delves into a novel design method for the phase profile of CEMS based on coarse a-priori distributions of incident and reflection angles onto the surface, influenced by vehicular traffic patterns. A penalty-based method is employed to optimize both the average spectral efficiency (SE) and average coverage probability, and it is compared against a lower-complexity and physically intuitive modular architecture, utilizing a codebook-based discrete optimization technique. Numerical results demonstrate that properly designed CEMS lead to a remarkable improvements in average SE and coverage probability, namely when the direct path is blocked.

In Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems, matching the radar targets with communication user equipments (UEs) is functional to several communication tasks, such as proactive handover and beam prediction. In this paper, we consider a radar-assisted communication system where a base station (BS) is equipped with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar that has a double aim: (i) associate vehicular radar targets to vehicular equipments (VEs) in the communication beamspace and (ii) predict the beamforming vector for each VE from radar data. The proposed target-to-user (T2U) association consists of two stages. First, vehicular radar targets are detected from range-angle images, and, for each, a beamforming vector is estimated. Then, the inferred per-target beamforming vectors are matched with the ones utilized at the BS for communication to perform target-to-user (T2U) association. Joint multi-target detection and beam inference is obtained by modifying the you only look once (YOLO) model, which is trained over simulated range-angle radar images. Simulation results over different urban vehicular mobility scenarios show that the proposed T2U method provides a probability of correct association that increases with the size of the BS antenna array, highlighting the respective increase of the separability of the VEs in the beamspace. Moreover, we show that the modified YOLO architecture can effectively perform both beam prediction and radar target detection, with similar performance in mean average precision on the latter over different antenna array sizes.

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is one of the key pillars envisioned for 6G wireless systems. ISAC systems combine communication and sensing functionalities over a single waveform, with full resource sharing. In particular, waveform design for legacy Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems consists of a suitable time-frequency resource allocation policy balancing between communication and sensing performance. Over time and/or frequency, having unused resources leads to an ambiguity function with high sidelobes that significantly affect the performance of ISAC for OFDM waveforms. This paper proposes an OFDM-based ISAC waveform design that takes into account communication and resource occupancy constraints. The proposed method minimizes the Cram\'er-Rao Bound (CRB) on delay and Doppler estimation for two closely spaced targets. Moreover, the paper addresses the under-sampling issue by interpolating the estimated sensing channel based on matrix completion via Schatten $p$-norm approximation. Coherent multistatic radio imaging represents a pivotal opportunity for forthcoming wireless networks, which involves distributed nodes cooperating to achieve accurate sensing resolution and robustness. This paper delves into cooperative coherent imaging for vehicular radar networks. Herein, multiple radar-equipped vehicles cooperate to improve collective sensing capabilities and address the fundamental issue of distinguishing weak targets in close proximity to strong ones, a critical challenge for vulnerable road users protection. We prove the significant benefits of cooperative coherent imaging in the considered automotive scenario in terms of both probability of correct detection, evaluated considering several system parameters, as well as resolution capabilities, showcased by a dedicated experimental campaign wherein the collaboration between two vehicles enables the detection of the legs of a pedestrian close to a parked car. Electromagnetic skins (EMSs) have been recently considered as a booster for wireless sensing, but their usage on mobile targets is relatively novel and could be of interest when the target reflectivity can/must be increased to improve its detection or the estimation of parameters. In particular, when illuminated by a wide-bandwidth signal (e.g., from a radar operating at millimeter waves), vehicles behave like \textit{extended targets}, since multiple parts of the vehicle's body effectively contribute to the back-scattering. Moreover, in some cases perspective deformations challenge the correct localization of the vehicle. To address these issues, we propose lodging EMSs on vehicles' roof to act as high-reflectivity planar retro-reflectors toward the sensing terminal. The advantage is twofold: \textit{(i)} by introducing a compact high-reflectivity structure on the target, we make vehicles behave like \textit{point targets}, avoiding perspective deformations and related ranging biases and \textit{(ii)} we increase the reflectivity the vehicle, improving localization performance. We detail the EMS design from the system-level to the full-wave-level considering both reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and cost-effective static passive electromagnetic skins (SP-EMSs). Localization performance of the EMS-aided sensing system is also assessed by Cram\'er-Rao bound analysis in both narrowband and spatially wideband operating conditions.

Space-time modulated metasurfaces (STMMs) are a recently proposed generalization of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, which include a proper time-varying phase at the metasurface elements, enabling higher flexibility and control of the reflected signals. The spatial component can be designed to control the direction of reflection, while the temporal one can be adjusted to change the frequency of the reflected signal or to convey information. However, the coupling between the spatial and temporal phases at the STMM can adversely affect its performance. Therefore, this paper analyzes the system parameters that affect the space-time coupling. Furthermore, two methods for space-time decoupling are investigated. Numerical results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed decoupling methods and reveal that the space-time phase coupling increases with the bandwidth of the temporal phase, the size of the STMM, and with grazing angles of incidence onto the STMM., Comment: 6 pages

Networked sensing refers to the capability of properly orchestrating multiple sensing terminals to enhance specific figures of merit, e.g., positioning accuracy or imaging resolution. Regarding radio-based sensing, it is essential to understand \textit{when} and \textit{how} sensing terminals should be orchestrated, namely the best cooperation that trades between performance and cost (e.g., energy consumption, communication overhead, and complexity). This paper addresses networked sensing from a physics-driven perspective, aiming to provide a general theoretical benchmark to evaluate its \textit{imaging} performance bounds and to guide the sensing orchestration accordingly. Diffraction tomography theory (DTT) is the method to quantify the imaging resolution of any radio sensing experiment from inspection of its spectral (or wavenumber) content. In networked sensing, the image formation is based on the back-projection integral, valid for any network topology and physical configuration of the terminals. The \textit{wavefield networked sensing} is a framework in which multiple sensing terminals are orchestrated during the acquisition process to maximize the imaging quality (resolution and grating lobes suppression) by pursuing the deceptively simple \textit{wavenumber tessellation principle}. We discuss all the cooperation possibilities between sensing terminals and possible killer applications. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered in sensing context to either improve localization performance or to extend the coverage in non-line-of-sight scenarios. While most of the literature considers RISs as statically placed in the environment, the usage of target-lodged RISs is relatively new and could be of interest where the target's reflectivity can/must be increased to improve its detection or parameters' estimation. This letter derives the Cram\'er-Rao bound (CRB) on the estimation of position and orientation (\textit{pose}) of a target-mounted RIS, in generic conditions: near-field, bistatic and wideband operation (i.e., when the wavefront across the RIS is curved and the employed sensing bandwidth is large enough to obtain a frequency-dependent RIS behavior). Target-to-user (T2U) association is a prerequisite to fully exploit the potential of the sensing function in communication-centric integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, e.g., for beam and blockage management. This letter proposes to purposely mount a RIS on the roof of the vehicular user equipment (VUE), which can serve as an intentional back-reflector towards the base station. By controlling the reflection pattern over time, it is possible to transmit information to the sensing system, i.e., back-reflection as bit 1, no back-reflection as bit 0. The VUEs are configured to back-reflect a Hadamard code sequence, which enables T2U association. The numerical results confirm the validity of our proposal.

Space-time modulated metasurfaces (STMMs) are a newly investigated technology for next 6G generation wireless communication networks. An STMM augments the spatial phase function with a time-varying one across the elements, allowing for the conveyance of information that possibly modulates the impinging signal. Hence, STMM represents an evolution of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which only design the spatial phase pattern. STMMs convey signals without a relevant increase in the energy budget, which is convenient for applications where energy is a strong constraint. This paper proposes a mathematical model for STMM-based wireless communication, that creates the basics for two potential STMM architectures. One has excellent design flexibility, whereas the other is more cost-effective. The model describes STMM's distinguishing features, such as space-time coupling, and their impact on system performance. The proposed STMM model addresses the design criteria of a full-duplex system architecture, in which the temporal signal originating at the STMM generates a modulation overlapped with the incident one. The presented numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed model and its potential to revolutionize wireless communication.

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems are recognised as one of the key ingredients of the sixth generation (6G) network. A challenging topic in ISAC is the design of a single waveform combining both communication and sensing functionalities on the same time-frequency-space resources, allowing to tune the performance of both with partial or full hardware sharing. This paper proposes a dual-domain waveform design approach that superposes onto the frequency-time (FT) domain both the legacy orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal and a sensing one, purposely designed in the delay-Doppler domain. With a proper power downscaling of the sensing signal w.r.t. OFDM, it is possible to exceed regulatory bandwidth limitations proper of legacy multicarrier systems to increase the sensing performance while leaving communication substantially unaffected. Numerical and experimental results prove the effectiveness of the dual-domain waveform, notwithstanding a power abatement of at least 30 dB of the signal used for sensing compared to the one used for communication. The dual-domain ISAC waveform outperforms both OFDM and orthogonal time-frequency-space (OTFS) in terms of Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound on delay estimation (up to 20 dB), thanks to its superior resolution, with a negligible penalty on the achievable rate., Comment: 28 pages, single column

Network-controlled repeaters (NCR) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) are being considered by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as valid candidates for range extension in millimeter-wave (mmW, 30-300 GHz frequency) 5G and 6G networks, to counteract large path and penetration losses. Nowadays, there is no definite answer on which of the two technologies is better for coverage extension, since existing comparative studies focused either on communication-related metrics only or on very large-scale analysis, without physical layer details or environmental considerations. This paper aims at comparing NCR and RIS solutions in terms of coverage in an urban scenario. Numerical results suggest a possible usage of both technologies, showing that preferring RIS or NCR depends not only on their physical capabilities and cost (e.g., the number of antenna elements, the angular separation between panels for NCR, etc.) but also on environment geometry.

Smart Repeaters (SR) can potentially enhance the coverage in Millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless communications. However, the angular coverage of the existing two-panel SR is too limited to make the SR a truly cost-effective mmWave range extender. This paper proposes the usage of a tri-sectoral Advanced SR (ASR) to extend the angular coverage with respect to conventional SR. We propose a multi-user precoder optimization for ASR in a downlink multi-carrier communication system to maximize the number of served User Equipments (UEs) while guaranteeing constraints on per-UE rate and time-frequency resources. Numerical results show the benefits of the ASR against conventional SR in terms of both cumulative spectral efficiency and number of served UEs (both improved by an average factor 2), varying the system parameters.

The surging capacity demands of 5G networks and the limited coverage distance of high frequencies like millimeter wave (mmW) and sub-terahertz (THz) bands have led to consider the upper 6GHz (U6G) spectrum for radio access. However, due to the presence of the existing satellite (SAT) services in these bands, it is crucial to evaluate the impact of the interference of terrestrial U6G stations to SAT systems. A comprehensive study on the aggregated U6G-to-SAT interference is still missing in the literature. In this paper, we propose a stochastic model of interference (SMI) to evaluate the U6G-to-SAT interference, including the statistical characterization of array gain and clutter loss and considering different interference modes. Furthermore, we propose an approximate geometrical-based stochastic model of interference (GSMI) as an alternative method to SMI when the clutter-loss distribution is unavailable. Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) will represent a key technology in the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) communication networks to extend the network coverage and overcome link blockage. Research on IRS is expected to take a giant leap in the coming years to address the current technological limitations, mainly regarding the IRS re-configuration in highly dynamic scenarios, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) ones. This paper proposes a fully passive and low-cost solution based on pre-configured IRS to be lodged on the vehicle's body, which does not require any signaling for re-configuration. However, conventional IRS are planar array and cannot fit with most vehicles' silhouettes. Hence, the proposed design targets conformal surfaces (C-IRS) with an arbitrary shape. In particular, this paper reveals the first experimental findings on the realization of C-IRS operating at 26 GHz and measurements in anechoic chamber, which validate the analytical derivations. To demonstrate the benefits of the proposed solution, numerical simulations in a V2V scenario show that, when the percentage of vehicles equipping a C-IRS increases, the communication becomes more robust to vehicles' blockage and the average end-to-end SNR is enhanced up to 25 dB., Comment: 6 pages

Millimeter Waves (mmW) and sub-THz frequencies are the candidate bands for the upcoming Sixth Generation (6G) of communication systems. The use of collimated beams at mmW/sub-THz to compensate for the increased path and penetration loss arises the need for a seamless Beam Management (BM), especially for high mobility scenarios such as the Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) one. Recent research advances in Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) indicate that equipping the network infrastructure, e.g., the Base Station (BS), with either a stand-alone radar or sensing capabilities using optimized waveforms, represents the killer technology to facilitate the BM. However, radio sensing should accurately localize the Vehicular Equipment (VE)'s antenna, which is not guaranteed in general. Differently, employing side information from VE's onboard positioning sensors might overcome this limitation at the price of an increased control signaling between VE and BS. This paper provides a pragmatic comparison between radar-assisted and position-assisted BM for mmW V2I systems in a typical urban scenario in terms of BM training time and beamforming gain loss due to a wrong BM decision. Simulation results, supported by experimental evidence, show that the point target approximation of a traveling VE does not hold in practical V2I scenarios with radar-equipped BS. Therefore, the true antenna position has a residual uncertainty that is independent of radar's resolution and implies 50\,\% more BM training time on average. Moreover, there is not a winning technology for BM between BS-mounted radar and VE's onboard positioning systems. They provide complementary performance, depending on position, although outperforming blind BM techniques compared to conventional blind methods. With the advent of self-driving vehicles, autonomous driving systems will have to rely on a vast number of heterogeneous sensors to perform dynamic perception of the surrounding environment. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems increase the resolution of conventional mass-market radars by exploiting the vehicle's ego-motion, requiring a very accurate knowledge of the trajectory, usually not compatible with automotive-grade navigation systems. In this regard, this paper deals with the analysis, estimation and compensation of trajectory estimation errors in automotive SAR systems, proposing a complete residual motion estimation and compensation workflow. We start by defining the geometry of the acquisition and the basic processing steps of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) SAR systems. Then, we analytically derive the effects of typical motion errors in automotive SAR imaging. Based on the derived models, the procedure is detailed, outlining the guidelines for its practical implementation. In future 6G millimeter wave (mmWave)/sub-THz vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication systems, vehicles are expected to be equipped with massive antenna arrays to realize beam-based links capable of compensating for the severe path loss. However, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) direct links are prone to be blocked by surrounding vehicles. Emerging metasurface technologies enable the control of the electromagnetic wave reflection towards the desired direction, enriching the channel scattering to boost communication performance. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), and mostly the pre-configured counterpart intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), are a promising low-cost relaying system for 6G. This paper proposes using conformal metasurfaces (either C-RIS or C-IRS) deployed on vehicles' body to mitigate the blockage impact in a highway multi-lane scenario. In particular, conformal metasurfaces create artificial reflections to mitigate blockage by compensating for the non-flat shape of the vehicle's body, such as the lateral doors, with proper phase patterns. We analytically derive the phase pattern to apply to a cylindrical C-RIS/C-IRS approximating the shape of the car body, as a function of both incidence and reflection angles, considering cylindrical RIS/IRS as a generalization of conventional planar ones. We propose a novel design for optimally pre-configured C-IRS to mimic the behavior of an EM flat surface on car doors, proving the benefits of C-RIS and C-IRS in a multi-lane V2V highway scenario. The results show a consistent reduction of blockage probability when exploiting C-RIS/C-IRS, 20% for pre-configured C-IRS, and 70% for C-RIS, as well as a remarkable improvement in terms of average signal-to-noise ratio, respectively 10-20 dB for C-IRS and 30-40 dB for C-RIS.

The evolution of wireless communication systems towards millimeter-wave ($30-100$ GHz) and sub-THz ($>100$ GHz) frequency bands highlighted the need for accurate and fast beam management and a proactive link-blockage prediction in high-mobility scenarios. Joint Communication and Sensing (JC\&S) systems aim at equipping communication terminals with sensing capabilities using the same time/frequency/space communication resources to solve, or alleviate, the aforementioned issues. For an efficient implementation, a suitable waveform design that combines communication and sensing capabilities is of utmost importance. This paper proposes a novel dual-domain waveform design approach that superimposes onto the Frequency-Time (FT) domain both the legacy orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation scheme and a sensing signal, purposely designed in the Delay-Doppler (DD) domain. The power of the two signals is properly allocated in FT and DD domains, respectively, to reduce their mutual interference and optimize both communication and sensing tasks. This paper deals with the analysis, estimation, and compensation of trajectory errors in automotive-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems. First of all, we define the geometry of the acquisition and the model of the received signal. We then proceed by analytically evaluating the effect of an error in the vehicle's trajectory. Based on the derived model, we introduce a motion compensation (MoCo) procedure capable of estimating and compensating constant velocity motion errors leading to a well-focused and well-localized SAR image. Automotive synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are rapidly emerging as a candidate technological solution to enable a high-resolution environment mapping for autonomous driving. Compared to lidars and cameras, automotive-legacy radars can work in any weather condition and without an external source of illumination, but are limited in either range or angular resolution. SARs offer a relevant increase in angular resolution, provided that the ego-motion of the radar platform is known along the synthetic aperture. In this paper, we present the results of an experimental campaign aimed at assessing the potential of a multi-beam SAR imaging in an urban scenario, composed of various targets (buildings, cars, pedestrian, etc.), employing a 77 GHz multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar platform based on a mass-market available automotive-grade technology. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications are revolutionizing the connectivity of transportation systems supporting safe and efficient road mobility. To meet the growing bandwidth eagerness of V2X services, millimeter-wave (e.g., 5G new radio over spectrum 26.50 - 48.20 GHz) and sub-THz (e.g., 120 GHz) frequencies are being investigated for the large available spectrum. Communication at these frequencies requires beam-type connectivity as a solution for the severe path loss attenuation. However, beams can be blocked, with negative consequences for communication reliability. Blockage prediction is necessary and challenging when the blocker is dynamic in high mobility scenarios such as Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V). This paper presents an analytical model to derive the unconditional probability of blockage in a highway multi-lane scenario. The proposed model accounts for the traffic density, the 3D dimensions of the vehicles, and the position of the antennas. Moreover, by setting the communication parameters and a target quality of service, it is possible to predict the signal-to-noise ratio distribution and the service probability, which can be used for resource scheduling. In the emerging high mobility Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications using millimeter Wave (mmWave) and sub-THz, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel estimation is an extremely challenging task. At mmWaves/sub-THz frequencies, MIMO channels exhibit few leading paths in the space-time domain (i.e., directions or arrival/departure and delays). Algebraic Low-rank (LR) channel estimation exploits space-time channel sparsity through the computation of position-dependent MIMO channel eigenmodes leveraging recurrent training vehicle passages in the coverage cell. LR requires vehicles' geographical positions and tens to hundreds of training vehicles' passages for each position, leading to significant complexity and control signalling overhead. Here we design a DL-based LR channel estimation method to infer MIMO channel eigenmodes in V2X urban settings, starting from a single LS channel estimate and without needing vehicle's position information. Numerical results show that the proposed method attains comparable Mean Squared Error (MSE) performance as the position-based LR. Moreover, we show that the proposed model can be trained on a reference scenario and be effectively transferred to urban contexts with different space-time channel features, providing comparable MSE performance without an explicit transfer learning procedure. This result eases the deployment in arbitrary dense urban scenarios.

MIMO systems in the context of 6G Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) will require an accurate channel knowledge to enable efficient communication. Standard channel estimation techniques, such as Unconstrained Maximum Likelihood (U-ML), are extremely noisy in massive MIMO settings, while structured approaches, e.g., compressed sensing, are suited to low-mobility scenarios and are sensitive to hardware impairments. We propose a novel Multi-Vehicular algebraic channel estimation method for 6G V2X based on unsupervised learning which exploits recurrent vehicle passages in typical urban settings. Multiple training sequences are clustered via K-medoids algorithm based on their \textit{algebraic similarity} to retrieve the MIMO channel eigenmodes, which can be used to improve the channel estimates. In this article, we draw out our vision on an intelligent, cooperative, and sustainable mobility environment of the future, discussing how 6G will positively impact mobility services and applications. The scenario in focus is a densely populated area by smart connected entities that are mutually connected over a 6G virtual bus, which enables access to an extensive and always up-to-date set of context-sensitive information. The augmented dataset is functional to let vehicles engage in adaptive and cooperative learning mechanisms, enabling fully automated functionalities with higher communication integrity and reduced risk of accidents while being a sentient and collaborative processing node of the same ecosystem. Channel estimation for hybrid Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems at Millimeter-Waves (mmW)/sub-THz is a fundamental, despite challenging, prerequisite for an efficient design of hybrid MIMO precoding/combining. Most works propose sequential search algorithms, e.g., Compressive Sensing (CS), that are most suited to static channels and consequently cannot apply to highly dynamic scenarios such as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X). To address the latter ones, we leverage \textit{recurrent vehicle passages} to design a novel Multi Vehicular (MV) hybrid MIMO channel estimation suited for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) systems. Our approach derives the analog precoder/combiner through a MV beam alignment procedure. For the digital precoder/combiner, we adapt the Low-Rank (LR) channel estimation method to learn the position-dependent eigenmodes of the received digital signal (after beamforming), which is used to estimate the compressed channel in the communication phase. Extensive numerical simulations, obtained with ray-tracing channel data and realistic vehicle trajectories, demonstrate the benefits of our solution in terms of both achievable Spectral Efficiency (SE) and Mean Square Error (MSE) compared to the Unconstrained Maximum Likelihood (U-ML) estimate of the compressed digital channel, making it suitable for both 5G and future 6G systems. Most notably, in some scenarios, we obtain the performance of the optimal Fully Digital (FD) systems.

Ultra-reliable low-latency Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications are needed to meet the extreme requirements of enhanced driving applications. Millimeter-Wave (24.25-52.6 GHz) or sub-THz (>100 GHz) V2X communications are a viable solution, provided that the highly collimated beams are kept aligned during vehicles' maneuverings. In this work, we propose a sensor-assisted dynamic Beamwidth and Power Control (BPC) system to counteract the detrimental effect of vehicle dynamics, exploiting data collected by on-board inertial and positioning sensors, mutually exchanged among vehicles over a parallel low-rate link, e.g., 5G New Radio (NR) Frequency Range 1 (FR1). The proposed BPC solution works on top of a sensor-aided Beam Alignment and Tracking (BAT) system, overcoming the limitations of fixed-beamwidth systems and optimizing the performance in challenging Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) scenarios, even if extensions to Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) use-cases are feasible. We validate the sensor-assisted dynamic BPC on real trajectories and sensors' data collected by a dedicated experimental campaign. The goal is to show the advantages of the proposed BPC strategy in a high data-rate Line-Of-Sight (LOS) V2V context, and to outline the requirements in terms of sensors' sampling time and accuracy, along with the end-to-end latency on the control channel.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications are being proposed, tested and deployed to improve road safety and traffic efficiency. However, the automotive industry poses strict requirements for safety-critical applications, that call for reliable, low latency and high data rate communications. In this context, it is widely agreed that both Radio-Frequency (RF) technologies at mmWaves and Free-Space Optics (FSO) represent promising solutions, although their performances are severely degraded by transmitter-receiver misalignment due to the challenging high-mobility conditions. By combining RF and FSO technologies, this paper proposes a FSO-based V2V communication system where the pointing coordinates of laser sources are based on vehicle's information exchanged over a reliable low-rate RF link.
