We measured static, kinetic, and dynamic visual acuity (SVA, KVA, and DVA, respectively) of Japanese professional baseball players to ascertain whether there would be any difference in SVA, KVA, and DVA among player groups stratified according to their performance level. Methods: The subjects were 102 male professional baseball players with a mean age of 26 years who were members of a Japanese professional baseball club from 2000 to 2009. They were stratified into three groups according to their performance level: A (players who were on the roster of the top-level team all the time throughout the study period), B (players who were on the roster of the top-level team sometimes but not all the time), and C (players who were never on the roster of the top-level team). They were interviewed for the use of corrective visual aids, and examined for SVA, KVA, and DVA. The measurements of these parameters were compared among groups A, B, and C. We also investigated and analyzed the association of KVA or DVA with player position (pitchers or fielders) and with hand dominance for batting. KVA was compared between the pitchers and the fielders because they each require different playing skills. DVA was compared between the right-handed and the left-handed batters. Results: There was no statistically significant difference among groups A, B, and C. There was a statistically significant difference in KVA between the pitchers and the fielders (t-test; P < 0.05) There was no statistically significant difference in DVA between the right-handed and the left-handed batters. Conclusions: There was no significant difference in the examined visual functions among player groups with different performance levels. The article describes the case of a two-month old squirrel monkey who died due to cardiac hamartoma. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings revealed an encapsulated nodular lesion at the right atrial wall consisting of myocytes mixed with fibroblast and collagen fibers, stratified striations in the cytoplasm of constituting cells of the lesion, and the strong reaction of cells for desmin. Results also showed myocardial hypertrophy of the interventricular septum, edema and congestion.

Wolbachia are cytoplasmically inherited bacteria that are reported to infect at least 18–30% of all insect species. Our survey of Lepidoptera indicated that 44.9% of forty-nine species and 77.8% of nine families tested positive for Wolbachia using PCR with wsp primers. Nineteen species had not been described previously as infected. In particular, although Pieris rapae, which is a common species in Japan, is infected by Wolbachia, the prevalence was very low (3.4%) and there were some localities where Wolbachia could not be detected. The probability of detection of Wolbachia depends on the number of screened individuals of P. rapae. The results indicate that the actual number of species that are positive for Wolbachia may be higher than previously reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fatigue phenomenon of grating visual acuity was examined in 36 patients with optic nerve disorders by means of a laser interferometric acuity device. The phenomenon was found in 6 of 36 cases even under a luminance corresponding to the Japanese standards of office illumination. This fact indicated that the patients suffered visual fatigue in their everyday vision. After they were prescribed tinted lenses to eliminate the fatigue, the patients had comfortable sustained vision in their daily work. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract Background How the central nervous system (CNS) organizes the joint dynamics for multi-joint movement is a complex problem, because of the passive interaction among segmental movements. Previous studies have demonstrated that the CNS predictively compensates for interaction torque (INT) which is arising from the movement of the adjacent joints. However, most of these studies have mainly examined quick movements, presumably because the current belief is that the effects of INT are not significant at slow speeds. The functional contribution of INT for multijoint movements performed in various speeds is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of INT to a planer reaching in a wide range of motion speeds for healthy subjects. Methods Subjects performed reaching movements toward five targets under three different speed conditions. Joint position data were recorded using a 3-D motion analysis device (50 Hz). Torque components, muscle torque (MUS), interaction torque (INT), gravity torque (G), and net torque (NET) were calculated by solving the dynamic equations for the shoulder and elbow. NET at a joint which produces the joint kinematics will be an algebraic sum of torque components; NET = MUS - G - INT. Dynamic muscle torque (DMUS = MUS-G) was also calculated. Contributions of INT impulse and DMUS impulse to NET impulse were examined. Results The relative contribution of INT to NET was not dependent on speed for both joints at every target. INT was additive (same direction) to DMUS at the shoulder joint, while in the elbow DMUS counteracted (opposed to) INT. The trajectory of reach was linear and two-joint movements were coordinated with a specific combination at each target, regardless of motion speed. However, DMUS at the elbow was opposed to the direction of elbow movement, and its magnitude varied from trial to trial in order to compensate for the variability of INT. Conclusion Interaction torque was important at slow speeds. Muscle torques at the two joints were not directly related to each other to produce coordinated joint movement during a reach. These results support Bernstein's idea that coordinated movement is not completely determined by motor command in multi-joint motion. Based on the data presented in this study and the work of others, a model for the connection between joint torques (muscle and passive torques including interaction torque) and joint coordination is proposed.

Amikacin liposome inhalation suspension (ALIS) is known to cause drug-related pneumonitis, which has been described as "hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP)". However, its clinical and pathological characteristics have never been reported. We retrospectively evaluated 18 patients treated with ALIS. Three (16.7%) patients developed HP-pattern pneumonitis on high-resolution computed tomography. Serum eosinophil counts were elevated up to above 1000/μL in these three patients, which decreased with ALIS discontinuation only. Of note, the specimen obtained by transbronchial lung cryobiopsy in one patient revealed a mild degree of lymphocyte and eosinophil infiltration. Rather, the findings of acute lung injury such as an edematous thickening of the alveolar walls, and an accumulation of foamy degenerative macrophages in the alveolar lumina was prominent. A pulmonary alveolar proteinosis reaction was also observed. HP-pattern pneumonitis due to ALIS may pathologically correspond to acute lung injury and a pulmonary alveolar proteinosis reaction despite increasing serum eosinophil counts., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare., (Copyright © 2024. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a valuable biomarker for immune checkpoint inhibitors. We report the first case of MSI-high thymoma successfully treated with pembrolizumab. This patient had pleural dissemination and was treated with two cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens including carboplatin and paclitaxel combination therapy and pemetrexed, which did not have the desired effect. Because MSI status was high by using the surgical specimen, pembrolizumab was administered as 3rd line chemotherapy. After three courses, the pleural lesions dramatically shrunk, which confirmed a partial response. Background: For simultaneous prediction of phenotypic drug susceptibility test (pDST) for multiple antituberculosis drugs, the whole genome sequencing (WGS) data can be analyzed using either a catalog-based approach, wherein 1 causative mutation suggests resistance, (eg, World Health Organization catalog) or noncatalog-based approach using complicated algorithm (eg, TB-profiler, machine learning). The aim was to estimate the predictive ability of WGS-based tests with pDST as the reference, and to compare the 2 approaches., Methods: Following a systematic literature search, the diagnostic test accuracies for 14 drugs were pooled using a random-effect bivariate model., Results: Of 779 articles, 44 with 16 821 specimens for meta-analysis and 13 not for meta-analysis were included. The areas under summary receiver operating characteristic curve suggested test accuracy was excellent (0.97-1.00) for 2 drugs (isoniazid 0.975, rifampicin 0.975), very good (0.93-0.97) for 8 drugs (pyrazinamide 0.946, streptomycin 0.952, amikacin 0.968, kanamycin 0.963, capreomycin 0.965, para-aminosalicylic acid 0.959, levofloxacin 0.960, ofloxacin 0.958), and good (0.75-0.93) for 4 drugs (ethambutol 0.926, moxifloxacin 0.896, ethionamide 0.878, prothionamide 0.908). The noncatalog-based and catalog-based approaches had similar ability for all drugs., Conclusions: WGS accurately identifies isoniazid and rifampicin resistance. For most drugs, positive WGS results reliably predict pDST positive. Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a globally distributed nematode and the leading cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. As a global hotspot for this disease, Hawaii's agricultural exports may be contributing to the spread of A. cantonensis. Phytosanitary irradiation doses of 150 or 400 Gy provide quarantine security against multiple insect pests. We evaluated the in vitro and in vivo effects of phytosanitary irradiation on infectious, third-stage, A. cantonensis larvae. In vitro experiments directly exposed larvae to irradiation doses ranging from 200 to 1,000 Gy. Results showed low mortality and no dose response across all treatments 27 days post-irradiation. In vivo studies isolated larvae from wild-caught Parmarion martensi after exposure to x-ray irradiation at doses of 0, 150, and 400 Gy and infected them into laboratory rats. Fourteen rats were assigned to each treatment and infected with 50 larvae from their assigned irradiation dose. Results at 3 and 6 weeks post-infection demonstrated a significant negative dose response in regard to the number of larvae that migrated to the brain and adults found in the pulmonary artery. No irradiated larvae that grew into adults were able to produce eggs. These findings indicate that x-ray irradiation does not result in the direct mortality of A. cantonensis larvae; however, it does affect the infectivity and reproduction of A. cantonensis within its definitive host, the rat. Phytosanitary irradiation at doses ≥150 Gy appears to be an effective means of preventing the establishment of viable populations of A. cantonensis, thus reducing the potential for global spread due to agricultural exports from Hawaii.
