Abstract Although increase in physical activity is important to improve prognosis of cardiac patients in addition to hospital-based exercise cardiac rehabilitation, their physical activity levels are not properly understood. This study aimed to examine domain- and intensity-specific physical activity in individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD) and compare them with non-CHD individuals. Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2014 to 2019 were analyzed, including 1083 CHD patients and 38,532 non-CHD individuals. The inclusion criteria were age 19 years or older and data not missing for CHD information. Before and after propensity score matching (PSM) for age, sex, body mass index, education, household income, alcohol intake, and smoking status, domain (leisure, work, transportation)—and intensity (moderate, vigorous) -specific physical activity participation levels were compared between individuals with and without CHD. Before PSM, CHD individuals were older, less educated, more sedentary, and participated less in PAs compared to non-CHD individuals. After PSM, CHD individuals had similar levels of domain-specific PAs. However, they had higher work-related PA levels (29.7 ± 209.6 vs. 42.1 ± 291.3 min/week p = 0.022) and more sedentary time (487.2 ± 224.2 vs. 514.1 ± 228.7. p = 0.003) than those without CHD. Abstract Background Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is recommended for patients with cardiovascular disease. However, the participation and completion rates for hospital-based CR are low, and home-based CR has been suggested as an alternative. This study aimed to develop a home-based CR program and assess the feasibility of the program over a 6-week period in patients with left ventricular dysfunction or a history of myocardial infarction. Methods This feasibility study consisted of two phases. The initial phase (Study 1) focused on developing the home-based exercise protocol. Systematic approaches to developing evidence-based home-based exercise intervention were implemented including systematic review, patient surveys, and expert consensus. Study 2 aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a 6-week home-based CR program that was based on the results of Study 1. Study 2 included two exercise education sessions and four telephone counseling sessions. During this stage of the exercise program, the participants exercised on two separate days and their experiences while performing the aerobic and resistance exercises were surveyed. Eight participants participated in Study 1 and 16 participated in Study 2. Results Participants expressed overall satisfaction with the exercise program in Study 1. Heart rate increased in response to exercise, but this did not correspond with perceived exertion. The aim of the home-based CR exercise program was for participants to achieve exercise goals (≥150 min/week of aerobic type exercises as well as at least twice weekly resistance exercise using own body weights). We aimed to increase compliance and adherence to the home-based CR program. In Study 2, 13 out of 16 participants (81.3%) completed the 6-week home-based CR program, with a participation rate of 100% in both exercise education and phone counseling sessions. Adherence to the home-based exercise protocol was 83.1% and no serious adverse events were observed. At the beginning of the study, only three out of 13 participants (23.1%) met the requirements for both aerobic and resistance exercises, but at the end of the 6-week program, 10 out of 13 participants (76.9%) fulfilled the requirements. Conclusion The exercise program developed in this study was safe and feasible, and the 6-week home-based CR program was feasible for patients with cardiovascular disease without any reported adverse effects.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia in the elderly and represents a major clinical challenge in the ageing society. Neuropathological hallmarks of AD include neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau, senile plaques derived from the deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, brain atrophy induced by neuronal loss, and synaptic dysfunctions. Death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) is ubiquitously expressed in the central nervous system. Dysregulation of DAPK1 has been shown to contribute to various neurological diseases including AD, ischemic stroke and Parkinson’s disease (PD). We have established an upstream effect of DAPK1 on Aβ and tau pathologies and neuronal apoptosis through kinase-mediated protein phosphorylation, supporting a causal role of DAPK1 in the pathophysiology of AD. In this review, we summarize current knowledge about how DAPK1 is involved in various AD pathological changes including tau hyperphosphorylation, Aβ deposition, neuronal cell death and synaptic degeneration. The underlying molecular mechanisms of DAPK1 dysregulation in AD are discussed. We also review the recent progress regarding the development of novel DAPK1 modulators and their potential applications in AD intervention. These findings substantiate DAPK1 as a novel therapeutic target for the development of multifunctional disease-modifying treatments for AD and other neurological disorders.

Purpose: Infertility affects 10% to 15% of couples, and male factor accounts for 50% of the cases. The relevant male genetic factors, which account for at least 15% of male infertility, include Y-chromosome microdeletions. We investigated clinical data and patterns of Y-chromosome microdeletions in Korean infertile men. Materials and Methods: A total of 919 infertile men whose sperm concentration was ≤5 million/mL in two consecutive analyses were investigated for Y-chromosome microdeletion. Among them, 130 infertile men (14.1%) demonstrated Y-chromosome microdeletions. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Results: In 130 men with Y-chromosome microdeletions, 90 (69.2%) had azoospermia and 40 (30.8%) had severe oligozoospermia. The most frequent microdeletions were in the azoospermia factor (AZF) c region (77/130, 59.2%), followed by the AZFb+c (30/130, 23.1%), AZFa (8/130, 6.2%), AZFb (7/130, 5.4%), AZFa+b+c (7/130, 5.4%), and AZFa+c (1/130, 0.7%) regions. In men with oligozoospermia, 37 (92.5%) had AZFc microdeletion. Chromosomal abnormalities were detected in 30 patients (23.1%). Purpose: We compared semen quality and sperm DNA fragmentation in cancer patients who underwent sperm banking and controls who underwent sperm cryopreservation for assisted reproductive technology (ART). Materials and Methods: A total of 132 men, 65 cancer patients and 67 controls, were prospectively enrolled and performed sperm cryopreservation for fertility preservation from May 2019 to February 2021. Sperm quality was determined by measuring semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility, and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI). Sperm quality and sperm DFI were compared in cancer patients and controls. Results: The major cancers of the 65 cancer patients were leukemia (26.2%), testicular cancer (23.1%), and lymphoma (20.0%). Sperm concentration, sperm total motility, and sperm progressive motility were significantly lower in cancer patients than in controls. Sperm DFI was significantly higher in cancer patients than in controls (24.32%±15.69% vs. 19.11%±11.63%; p=0.033). After excluding 8 cancer patients who received chemotherapy before sperm banking, sperm concentration, sperm total motility, and sperm progressive motility were significantly lower in cancer patients than in controls, but there was no significant difference in sperm DFI for cancer patients and controls (23.14%±12.79% vs. 19.11%±11.63%; p=0.069). Conclusions: Sperm quality was lower in cancer patients than in controls. There was no difference in the sperm DFI of cancer patients prior to chemotherapy and men presenting for sperm cryopreservation for ART. We recommend that all men who are planning cancer therapy should be offered sperm banking prior to gonadotoxic chemotherapy as a standard of fertility preservation.

Abstract In this study, an analysis method was established for the quantification of residues of halquinol and its metabolites in livestock and fishery products using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). We selected beef, pork (muscle and fat), chicken, egg, milk, flat fish, eel, and shrimp as target samples for validation of the method owing to them being typical livestock and fishery products. Validation of the developed analysis method was performed using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) at three concentration levels (0.5, 1, and 2 × the maximum residue limits) following the Codex Alimentarius (CODEX) guidelines (CAC/GL 71–2009). For all samples, correlation coefficients (R2) exceeded 0.99, recoveries ranged between 75.59 and 119.36%, and coefficients of variation (CV) ranged between 1.39 and 28.66%, thus satisfying CODEX guidelines. In addition, inter-laboratory validation was conducted, and the resulting recoveries and CVs satisfied the CODEX guidelines; LOQ was established as 10 μg kg–1 for pig muscle and 5 μg kg–1 for the other samples. Therefore, the analysis method developed in this study can accurately and precisely screen for and quantify halquinol and its metabolites in livestock and fishery products.

Background: The prevalence of rotator cuff repair is increasing; however, no study has assessed patients who have returned to golf activity after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Methods: The subjects of the survey were 633 patients who were at least two years postoperative after rotator cuff repair from January 2005 to December 2017. From August 2019 to October 2019, survey responses were collected via an online questionnaire or phone calls and a total of 197 patients were reviewed retrospectively to study about returning to golf after rotator cuff repair. The detailed survey included 12 questions specific to the patient's golf career, performance, time of return to play, and symptoms related to golf activity. Depending on the size of the rotator cuff tear, each question was statistically analyzed to determine whether there were differences in the time of return to golf, uncomfortable symptoms when golfing, and distance of the driving. Results: Of the 197 patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, there were 145 patients (73.6%) returned to golf. In the analysis results of 145 patients, the longer the golf career, the greater the chance of returning to golf. Sixty (30.5%) people returned to golf at 1 year after surgery. Twenty-one patients (10.7%) improved and 46 patients (23.4%) maintained their driving distance, whereas 78 patients (39.6%) had a worse driving distance after surgery. Ten patients (5.1%) improved and 97 patients (49.2%) maintained their golf score, but 38 patients (19.3%) had worse golf scores after surgery. Symptoms when playing golf were reported in the order of no symptoms (62.1%), a limited range of motion (13.1%), muscle weakness (11.1%), and anxious about their operated shoulder (10.3 %). Men were 6.9 times more likely to return to golf than women (odds ratio, 6.9; 95% confidence interval, 3.2-14.8). The younger the age and the shorter the time since surgery, the higher the golfing return rate. The rate of returning to golf was high in the group of patients with good tissue quality during surgery (odds ratio, 3.9; 95% confidence interval, 0.01–2.6). Conclusion: The golfing return rate after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair was higher than expected (73.6%) and most players returned at 1 year after surgery. Especially, in the case of young males, their golf scores were maintained or improved and they were able to return to golf earlier after surgery. Better tissue quality in the intraoperative torn tendon was associated with a greater chance of returning to golf.

The functional complexity of the central nervous system (CNS) is unparalleled in living organisms. It arises from neural crest-derived cells that migrate by the exact route, leading to the formation of a complex network of neurons and glial cells. Recent studies have shown that novel crosstalk exists between the Notch1 and Nrf2 pathways and is associated with many neurological diseases. The Notch1–Nrf2 axis may act on nervous system development, and the molecular mechanism has recently been reported. In this review, we summarize the essential structure and function of the CNS. The significance of interactions between signaling pathways and between developmental processes like proliferation, apoptosis and migration in ensuring the correct development of the CNS is also presented. We primarily focus on research concerning possible mechanism of interaction between Notch1 and Nrf2 and the functions of Notch1-Nrf2 in neurons. There may be a direct interaction between Notch1 and NRF2, which is closely related to the crosstalk that occurs between them. The significance and potential applications of the Notch1–Nrf2 axis in abnormal development of the nervous system are been highlighten. We also discuss the molecular mechanisms by which the Notch1–Nrf2 axis controls the apoptosis, antioxidant pathway and differentiation of neurons to modulate the development of the nervous system. This information will lead to a better understanding of Notch1–Nrf2 axis signaling pathways in the nervous system and may facilitate the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Purpose: There have been concerns regarding potential effects of older paternal age on male reproductive function. However, currently available data on this topic are insufficient and controversy exists. We analyzed semen characteristics and reproductive hormones in young men and middle-aged men to investigate the effect of age on male reproductive function. Materials and Methods: This study examined healthy males of reproductive age who visited a single infertility center from January 2016 to July 2021. The young group consisted of men who were less than 35 years-old, and the middle-age group consisted of men who were more than 45 years-old. Results: The two groups had no significant differences in sperm concentration ([89.9±59.4]×106/mL vs. [104.4±82.1]×106/mL, p=0.108) or sperm morphology (normal forms: 3.6%±1.5% vs. 3.4%±1.6%, p=0.131). Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the sperm retrieval rate (SRR) and pregnancy rate after testicular sperm extraction in men with azoospermia and those with a history of cryptorchidism treated by orchiopexy. Materials and Methods: The SRR and clinical pregnancy rate were investigated. We performed a sub-analysis that included factors such as bilaterality, age, and idiopathic non-obstructive azoospermia (iNOA). The analysis comprised 13 studies from January 1995 to July 2021. The data sources were PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library included “cryptorchidism”, “orchidopexy”, “azoospermia”, and “testicular sperm extraction”. Results: The overall mean SRR was 63.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 57.6%–68.6%; I2=62.4%), and the overall mean clinical pregnancy rate was 30.1% (95% CI, 22.6%–38.8%; I2=69.9%). The meta-analysis comparing the SRR, there was no significant difference between patients with a history of bilateral and unilateral orchiopexy (relative risk [RR]=1.02; 95% CI, 0.89–1.16; p=0.79). Orchiopexy performed under the age of 10 years showed significantly increased SRR compared to the age of over 10 years (RR=1.25; 95% CI, 1.06–1.47; p=0.008). BackgroundSocial loneliness is a prevalent issue in industrialized countries that can lead to adverse health outcomes, including a 26% increased risk of premature mortality, coronary heart disease, stroke, depression, cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer disease. The United Kingdom has implemented a strategy to address loneliness, including social prescribing—a health care model where physicians prescribe nonpharmacological interventions to tackle social loneliness. However, there is a need for evidence-based plans for global social prescribing dissemination. ObjectiveThis study aims to identify global trends in social prescribing from 2018. To this end, we intend to collect and analyze words related to social prescribing worldwide and evaluate various trends of related words by classifying the core areas of social prescribing. MethodsGoogle’s searchable data were collected to analyze web-based data related to social prescribing. With the help of web crawling, 3796 news items were collected for the 5-year period from 2018 to 2022. Key topics were selected to identify keywords for each major topic related to social prescribing. The topics were grouped into 4 categories, namely Healthy, Program, Governance, and Target, and keywords for each topic were selected thereafter. Text mining was used to determine the importance of words collected from new data. ResultsWord clouds were generated for words related to social prescribing, which collected 3796 words from Google News databases, including 128 in 2018, 432 in 2019, 566 in 2020, 748 in 2021, and 1922 in 2022, increasing nearly 15-fold between 2018 and 2022 (5 years). Words such as health, prescribing, and GPs (general practitioners) were the highest in terms of frequency in the list for all the years. Between 2020 and 2021, COVID, gardening, and UK were found to be highly related words. In 2022, NHS (National Health Service) and UK ranked high. This dissertation examines social prescribing–related term frequency and classification (2018-2022) in Healthy, Program, Governance, and Target categories. Key findings include increased “Healthy” terms from 2020, “gardening” prominence in “Program,” “community” growth across categories, and “Target” term spikes in 2021. ConclusionsThis study’s discussion highlights four key aspects: (1) the “Healthy” category trends emphasize mental health, cancer, and sleep; (2) the “Program” category prioritizes gardening, community, home-schooling, and digital initiatives; (3) “Governance” underscores the significance of community resources in social prescribing implementation; and (4) “Target” focuses on 4 main groups: individuals with long-term conditions, low-level mental health issues, social isolation, or complex social needs impacting well-being. Social prescribing is gaining global acceptance and is becoming a global national policy, as the world is witnessing a sharp rise in the aging population, noncontagious diseases, and mental health problems. A successful and sustainable model of social prescribing can be achieved by introducing social prescribing schemes based on the understanding of roles and the impact of multisectoral partnerships.

BackgroundThe UK National Health Service (NHS) has introduced a digital social prescribing (DSP) system to improve the mental health of the aging population. In Korea, an ongoing pilot social prescribing project has been implemented for older individuals in rural areas since 2019. ObjectiveThis research aims to develop a DSP program and to evaluate the effectiveness of the digital platform in rural areas of Korea. MethodsThis study was designed as a prospective cohort method for the development and effectiveness evaluation of rural DSP in Korea. The study divided participants into four groups. Group 1 will continuously implement the existing social prescribing program, group 2 implemented the existing social prescribing program but was switched to DSP in 2023, group 3 newly started the DSP, and the remaining group is the control. The research area of this study is Gangwon Province in Korea. The study is being conducted in Wonju, Chuncheon, and Gangneung. This study will use indicators to measure depression, anxiety, loneliness, cognitive function, and digital literacy. In the future, the interventions will implement the digital platform and the Music Story Telling program. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of DSP using difference-in-differences regression and cost-benefit analysis. ResultsThis study was approved for funding from the National Research Foundation of Korea funded by the Ministry of Education in October 2022. The results of the data analysis are expected to be available in September 2023. ConclusionsThe platform will be spread to rural areas in Korea and will serve as the foundation for effectively managing the feelings of solitude and depression among older individuals. This study will provide vital evidence for disseminating DSP in Asian countries such as Japan, China, Singapore, and Taiwan as well as for studying DSP in Korea. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a complex multifactorial disorder that poses a substantial burden on patients, caregivers, and society. Considering the increased aging population and life expectancy, the incidence of AD will continue to rise in the following decades. However, the molecular pathogenesis of AD remains controversial, superior blood-based biomarker candidates for early diagnosis are still lacking, and effective therapeutics to halt or slow disease progression are urgently needed. As powerful genetic regulators, microRNAs (miRNAs) are receiving increasing attention due to their implications in the initiation, development, and theranostics of various diseases, including AD. In this review, we summarize miRNAs that directly target microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), amyloid precursor protein (APP), and β-site APP-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) transcripts and regulate the alternative splicing of tau and APP. We also discuss related kinases, such as glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β, cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5), and death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1), as well as apolipoprotein E, that are directly targeted by miRNAs to control tau phosphorylation and amyloidogenic APP processing leading to Aβ pathologies. Moreover, there is evidence of miRNA-mediated modulation of inflammation. Furthermore, circulating miRNAs in the serum or plasma of AD patients as noninvasive biomarkers with diagnostic potential are reviewed. In addition, miRNA-based therapeutics optimized with nanocarriers or exosomes as potential options for AD treatment are discussed.

Abstract Background Intracellular accumulation of the microtubule-associated protein tau and its hyperphosphorylated forms is a key neuropathological feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Melatonin has been shown to prevent tau hyperphosphorylation in cellular and animal models. However, the molecular mechanisms by which melatonin attenuates tau hyperphosphorylation and tau-related pathologies are not fully understood. Methods Immunofluorescence, immunoblotting analysis and thioflavin-S staining were employed to examine the effects of early and late treatment of melatonin on tau-related pathology in hTau mice, in which nonmutated human tau is overexpressed on a mouse tau knockout background. High-throughput microRNA (miRNA) sequencing, quantitative RT-PCR, luciferase reporter assay and immunoblotting analysis were performed to determine the molecular mechanism. Results We found that both early and late treatment of melatonin efficiently decreased the phosphorylation of soluble and insoluble tau at sites related to AD. Moreover, melatonin significantly reduced the number of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and attenuated neuronal loss in the cortex and hippocampus. Furthermore, using miRNA microarray analysis, we found that miR-504-3p expression was upregulated by melatonin in the hTau mice. The administration of miR-504-3p mimics dramatically decreased tau phosphorylation by targeting p39, an activator of the well-known tau kinase cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5). Compared with miR-504-3p mimics alone, co-treatment with miR-504-3p mimics and p39 failed to reduce tau hyperphosphorylation. Conclusions Our results suggest for the first time that melatonin alleviates tau-related pathologies through upregulation of miR-504-3p expression by targeting the p39/CDK5 axis and provide novel insights into AD treatment strategies.

Abstract Ultrathin film-based transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) with a broad work function (WF) tunability are highly demanded for efficient energy conversion devices. However, reducing the film thickness below 50 nm is limited due to rapidly increasing resistance; furthermore, introducing dopants into TCOs such as indium tin oxide (ITO) to reduce the resistance decreases the transparency due to a trade-off between the two quantities. Herein, we demonstrate dopant-tunable ultrathin (≤ 50 nm) TCOs fabricated via electric field-driven metal implantation (m-TCOs; m = Ni, Ag, and Cu) without compromising their innate electrical and optical properties. The m-TCOs exhibit a broad WF variation (0.97 eV), high transmittance in the UV to visible range (89–93% at 365 nm), and low sheet resistance (30–60 Ω cm−2). Experimental and theoretical analyses show that interstitial metal atoms mainly affect the change in the WF without substantial losses in optical transparency. The m-ITOs are employed as anode or cathode electrodes for organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs), inorganic UV LEDs, and organic photovoltaics for their universal use, leading to outstanding performances, even without hole injection layer for OLED through the WF-tailored Ni-ITO. These results verify the proposed m-TCOs enable effective carrier transport and light extraction beyond the limits of traditional TCOs.

Abstract Background and aims Despite global vaccination efforts, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) remains high. To overcome the crisis precipitated by the ongoing pandemic, characteristic studies such as virus diagnosis, isolation, and genome analysis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) are necessary. Herein, we report the isolation and molecular characterization of SARS‐CoV‐2 from the saliva of patients who had tested positive for COVID‐19 at Proving Ground in Taean County, Republic of Korea, in 2020. Methods We analyzed the whole‐genome sequence of SARS‐CoV‐2 isolated from the saliva samples of patients through next‐generation sequencing. We also successfully isolated SARS‐CoV‐2 from the saliva samples of two patients by using cell culture, which was used to study the cytopathic effects and viral replication in Vero E6 cells. Results Whole‐genome sequences of the isolates, SARS‐CoV‐2 ADD‐2 and ADD‐4, obtained from saliva were identical, and phylogenetic analysis using Bayesian inference methods showed SARS‐CoV‐2 GH clade (B.1.497) genome‐specific clustering. Typical coronavirus‐like particles, with diameters of 70–120 nm, were observed in the SARS‐CoV‐2 infected Vero E6 cells using transmission electron microscopy. Conclusion In conclusion, this report provides insights into the molecular diagnosis, isolation, genetic characteristics, and diversity of SARS‐CoV‐2 isolated from the saliva of patients. Further studies are needed to explore and monitor the evolution and characteristics of SARS‐CoV‐2 variants.

Epilepsy is a common symptom of many neurological disorders and can lead to neuronal damage that plays a major role in seizure-related disability. The peptidyl-prolyl isomerase Pin1 has wide-ranging influences on the occurrence and development of neurological diseases. It has also been suggested that Pin1 acts on epileptic inhibition, and the molecular mechanism has recently been reported. In this review, we primarily focus on research concerning the mechanisms and functions of Pin1 in neurons. In addition, we highlight the significance and potential applications of Pin1 in neuronal diseases, especially epilepsy. We also discuss the molecular mechanisms by which Pin1 controls synapses, ion channels and neuronal signaling pathways to modulate epileptic susceptibility. Since neurotransmitters and some neuronal signaling pathways, such as Notch1 and PI3K/Akt, are vital to the nervous system, the role of Pin1 in epilepsy is discussed in the context of the CaMKII-AMPA receptor axis, PSD-95-NMDA receptor axis, NL2/gephyrin-GABA receptor signaling, and Notch1 and PI3K/Akt pathways. The effect of Pin1 on the progression of epilepsy in animal models is discussed as well. This information will lead to a better understanding of Pin1 signaling pathways in epilepsy and may facilitate development of new therapeutic strategies.

Death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1), a Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent serine/threonine kinase, mediates various neuronal functions, including cell death. Abnormal upregulation of DAPK1 is observed in human patients with neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and epilepsy. Ablation of DAPK1 expression and suppression of DAPK1 activity attenuates neuropathology and behavior impairments. However, whether DAPK1 regulates gene expression in the brain, and whether its gene profile is implicated in neuronal disorders, remains elusive. To reveal the function and pathogenic role of DAPK1 in neurological diseases in the brain, differential transcriptional profiling was performed in the brains of DAPK1 knockout (DAPK1-KO) mice compared with those of wild-type (WT) mice by RNA sequencing. We showed significantly altered genes in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, brain stem, and cerebellum of both male and female DAPK1-KO mice compared to those in WT mice, respectively. The genes are implicated in multiple neural-related pathways, including: AD, Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD), neurodegeneration, glutamatergic synapse, and GABAergic synapse pathways. Moreover, our findings imply that the potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily A member 1 (Kcna1) may be involved in the modulation of DAPK1 in epilepsy. Our study provides insight into the pathological role of DAPK1 in the regulatory networks in the brain and new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases.

Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) is one of the richest sources containing a wide variety of nutritive compounds. Anti-inflammatory activities of fermented rice cake made of strawberry powder as well as rice powder were evaluated. The fermented rice cake containing strawberry powder (SRC) significantly and dose-dependently inhibited NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells without cytotoxicity. Also, SRC effectively suppressed inflammatory gene expression, including iNOS, COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. In addition, the production of PGE2, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effect of SRC was investigated using carrageenan-induced paw edema of ICR mice. It was demonstrated that pre-orally administration of SRC at a dose of 50 and 100 mg/kg BW significantly inhibited paw edema induced by carrageenan. This study suggested that the anti-inflammation activities of strawberry rice cake give the potential for increasing the commercialization of rice cake and rice products.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a central nervous system degenerative disease, with no effective treatment to date. Administration of immune checkpoint inhibitors significantly reduces neuronal damage and tau hyperphosphorylation in AD, but the specific mechanism is unclear. Here, we found that programmed cell death-receptor 1 (PD1) and its ligand PDL1 were induced by an intracerebroventricular injection of amyloid-β; they were significantly upregulated in the brains of APP/PS1, 5×FAD mice and in SH-SY5Y-APP cell line compared with control. The PD1 and PDL1 levels positively correlated with the glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) activity in various AD mouse models, and the PDL1-GSK3β immune complex was found in the brain. The application of PD1-blocking antibody reduced tau hyperphosphorylation and GSK3β activity and prevented memory impairments. Mechanistically, we identified PD1 as a critical regulator of GSK3β activity. These results suggest that the immune regulation of the PD1/PDL1 axis is closely involved in AD.

Helicobacter pylori infections are a major cause of gastrointestinal disorders, including gastric ulcers, gastritis, and gastric cancer. Triple therapy, using two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor, is recommended for the treatment of H. pylori infections. However, antibiotic resistance in H. pylori is an emerging issue. Bamboo salt, a traditional Korean salt made by baking solar sea salt in bamboo barrels, can ameliorate the symptoms of various gastrointestinal diseases. Herein, we compared the anti-H. pylori activity of triple therapy (clarithromycin, metronidazole, and omeprazole), solar salt, and bamboo salt in vivo as a preliminary study. Four-week-old C57BL/6 male mice were inoculated for eight weeks with the H. pylori Sydney Strain 1 (SS-1) and orally administered triple therapy drugs and salts for five days. The transcript levels of the H. pylori-expressed gene CagA and inflammatory cytokines Tnfα and Il-1β significantly decreased in the bamboo salt treated mice than those in the H. pylori-infected control group. This effect was further enhanced by using triple therapy and bamboo salt together. Solar salt caused modest inhibition of H. pylori-induced inflammation. We also demonstrated the synergistic effects of bamboo salt and triple therapy against H. pylori. Thus, bamboo salt may be a potential candidate agent against the treatment of H. pylori-associated gastritis.

BackgroundThe US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization emphasized vaccination against COVID-19 because physical distancing proved inadequate to mitigate death, illness, and massive economic loss. ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate Korean citizens’ perceptions of vaccines by examining their views on COVID-19 vaccines, their positive and negative perceptions of each vaccine, and ways to enhance policies to increase vaccine acceptance. MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed posts on NAVER and Instagram to examine Korean citizens’ perception of COVID-19 vaccines. The keywords searched were “vaccine,” “AstraZeneca,” and “Pfizer.” In total 8100 posts in NAVER and 5291 posts in Instagram were sampled through web crawling. Morphology analysis was performed, overlapping or meaningless words were removed, sentiment analysis was implemented, and 3 public health professionals reviewed the results. ResultsThe findings revealed a negative perception of COVID-19 vaccines; of the words crawled, the proportion of negative words for AstraZeneca was 71.0% (476/670) and for Pfizer was 56.3% (498/885). Among words crawled with “vaccine,” “good” ranked first, with a frequency of 13.43% (312/2323). Meanwhile, “side effect” ranked highest, with a frequency of 29.2% (163/559) for “AstraZeneca,” but 0.6% (4/673) for “Pfizer.” With “vaccine,” positive words were more frequently used, whereas with “AstraZeneca” and “Pfizer” negative words were prevalent. ConclusionsThere is a negative perception of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines in Korea, with 1 in 4 people refusing vaccination. To address this, accurate information needs to be shared about vaccines including AstraZeneca, and the experiences of those vaccinated. Furthermore, government communication about risk management is required to increase the AstraZeneca vaccination rate for herd immunity before the vaccine expires.

The neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by intracellular aggregation of hyperphosphorylated tau and extracellular accumulation of beta-amyloid (Aβ). Death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1), as a novel therapeutic target, shows promise for the treatment of human AD, but the regulatory mechanisms of DAPK1 expression in AD remain unclear. In this study, we identified miR-143-3p as a promising candidate for targeting DAPK1. miR-143-3p directly bound to the 3′ untranslated region of human DAPK1 mRNA and inhibited its translation. miR-143-3p decreased tau phosphorylation and promoted neurite outgrowth and microtubule assembly. Moreover, miR-143-3p attenuated amyloid precursor protein (APP) phosphorylation and reduced the generation of Aβ40 and Aβ42. Furthermore, restoring DAPK1 expression with miR-143-3p antagonized the effects of miR-143-3p in attenuating tau hyperphosphorylation and Aβ production. In addition, the miR-143-3p levels were downregulated and correlated inversely with the expression of DAPK1 in the hippocampus of AD patients. Our results suggest that miR-143-3p might play critical roles in regulating both aberrant tau phosphorylation and amyloidogenic processing of APP by targeting DAPK1 and thus offer a potential novel therapeutic strategy for AD.

Glutamate excitotoxicity induces neuronal cell death during epileptic seizures. Death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) expression is highly increased in the brains of epilepsy patients; however, the underlying mechanisms by which DAPK1 influences neuronal injury and its therapeutic effect on glutamate excitotoxicity have not been determined. We assessed multiple electroencephalograms and seizure grades and performed biochemical and cell death analyses with cellular and animal models. We applied small molecules and peptides and knocked out and mutated genes to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of kainic acid (KA), an analog of glutamate-induced neuronal damage. KA administration increased DAPK1 activity by promoting its phosphorylation by activated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). DAPK1 activation increased seizure severity and neuronal cell death in mice. Selective ERK antagonist treatment, DAPK1 gene ablation, and uncoupling of DAPK1 and ERK peptides led to potent anti-seizure and anti-apoptotic effects in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, a DAPK1 phosphorylation-deficient mutant alleviated glutamate-induced neuronal apoptosis. These results provide novel insight into the pathogenesis of epilepsy and indicate that targeting DAPK1 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for treating epilepsy.

Feeding regimes and light may influence the productivity and wellbeing of aquatic animals; however, little is known regarding any interactive effects. We investigated if short-term deprivation and refeeding regimes and green light promotes growth by reducing stress in the olive flounder, using two lights [white fluorescent bulb (white) and green-wavelength LED (green)] in 4 feeding trials (fed 4 weeks, 4F; fasted 1 week/fed 3 weeks, 1S-3F; fasted 2 weeks/fed 2 weeks, 2S-2F; fasted 4 weeks, 4S). At the end of the feeding periods, weight gain rate (WGR), daily feed intake (DFI), and cumulative food intake (CFI) of 4F green group were significantly higher than other groups (p < 0.05), and the 1S-3F green group reached the WGR and DFI of the 4F white group (p> 0.05). Also, 1S-3F green group showed the highest values in feed efficiency (FE) (p < 0.05). In addition, mRNA expressions of neuropeptide Y (NPY), melanin concentrating hormone (MCH), and insulin like growth factor (IGF-1) were significantly higher in the 1S-3F green group at 4 weeks than in the other periods (p < 0.05). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining of NPY in diencephalon revealed that the brown colored increased with longer fasting period under white light. These results suggested that the 1S-3F feeding regime in the short term (4 weeks) was the most effective for short-term feed deprivation and re-feeding. Furthermore, green light had an especially beneficial effect that reduced stress and promoted appetite for refeeding in cultured fish. Our findings are expected to work toward a positive aquaculture environment for animal welfare.

The dependence of the catalytic activity and coke resistance of Ni-based catalysts on the support type was investigated in the dry reforming of methane (DRM). Catalysts were prepared using incipient wetness impregnation and analyzed using ICP-OES, BET-BJH, XRD, H2-chemisorption, H2-TPR, and CO2-TPD. DRM was performed at 600–750 °C at 144,000 mL/gcat∙h of GHSV (CH4/CO2/N2 = 1/1/1). Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/MgO catalysts formed NiAl2O4 and NiO-MgO solid solutions, respectively, owing to strong binding between the metal and support. In contrast, MgO-Al2O3 and MgAl2O4 supports suppressed NiAl2O4 and NiO-MgO solid solution formation, due to Mg addition, with high metal dispersions of 4.6 and 6.6%, respectively. In the DRM reaction, the Ni/MgO-Al2O3 and Ni/MgAl2O4 catalysts showed high CH4 conversions of 78.1 and 76.8%, respectively, compared with Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/MgO at 750 °C. A stability test was performed at 600 °C for 20 h. A coke study of the spent catalysts was performed using SEM and TGA. Alkaline-earth metal-containing catalysts Ni/MgO-Al2O3 and Ni/MgAl2O4 with strong CO2 adsorption properties showed 20 wt% reduction in carbon deposition compared to commercial catalysts. Therefore, the support and basic properties of the catalyst significantly influenced the catalyst performance and coke resistance in the DRM.

We consider the pandemic spread of COVID-19 in selected countries after the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Wuhan City, China. We estimated the infection rate and the initial individuals infected with COVID-19 by using officially reported data from the early stages of the epidemic for a model of susceptible (S), infectible (I), quarantined (Q), and officially confirmed recovered (Rk) populations (the so-called SIQRk model). In the officially reported data, we know the number of quarantined cases and the officially reported number of recovered cases. We cannot know about recovered cases from asymptomatic patients. In the SIQRk model, we can estimate the parameters and the initial infections (confirmed cases + asymptomatic cases) from fitted values. We obtained an infection rate in the range β = 0.233 ~ 0.462, a basic reproduction number of Ro = 1.8 ~ 3.5, and the initial number of infected individuals, I (0) = 10 ~ 8409, for selected countries. By using fitting parameters, we estimated that the maximum time span of the infection was around 50 days in Germany when the government invoked the quarantine policy. The disease is expected to subside about 6 months after the first patients are found.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia with cognitive decline. The neuropathology of AD is characterized by intracellular aggregation of neurofibrillary tangles consisting of hyperphosphorylated tau and extracellular deposition of senile plaques composed of beta-amyloid peptides derived from amyloid precursor protein (APP). The peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase Pin1 binds to phosphorylated serine or threonine residues preceding proline and regulates the biological functions of its substrates. Although Pin1 is tightly regulated under physiological conditions, Pin1 deregulation in the brain contributes to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. In this review, we discuss the expression and regulatory mechanisms of Pin1 in AD. We also focus on the molecular mechanisms by which Pin1 controls two major proteins, tau and APP, after phosphorylation and their signaling cascades. Moreover, the major impact of Pin1 deregulation on the progression of AD in animal models is discussed. This information will lead to a better understanding of Pin1 signaling pathways in the brain and may provide therapeutic options for the treatment of AD.

The peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) Pin1 is a unique enzyme that only binds to Ser/Thr-Pro peptide motifs after phosphorylation and regulates the conformational changes of the bond. The Pin1-catalyzed isomerization upon phosphorylation can have profound effects on substrate biological functions, including their activity, stability, assembly, and subcellular localization, affecting its role in intracellular signaling, transcription, and cell cycle progression. The functions of Pin1 are regulated by post-translational modifications (PTMs) in many biological processes, which include phosphorylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation and oxidation. Phosphorylation of different Pin1 sites regulates Pin1 enzymatic activity, binding ability, localization, and ubiquitination by different kinases under various cellular contexts. Moreover, SUMOylation and oxidation have been shown to downregulate Pin1 activity. Although Pin1 is tightly regulated under physiological conditions, deregulation of Pin1 PTMs contributes to the development of human diseases including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Therefore, manipulating the PTMs of Pin1 may be a promising therapeutic option for treating various human diseases. In this review, we focus on the molecular mechanisms of Pin1 regulation by PTMs and the major impact of Pin1 PTMs on the progression of cancer and AD.

In the last few decades, there has been notable progress in understanding the molecular and cellular basis of the complex process involved in cancer. In this context, tumor-promoting inflammation, dysregulation of apoptotic signaling, tissue invasion and metastasis, and cancer microenvironment have recently attracted interest from researchers. Irisin is a hormone released by muscles during exercise and it directly acts on key functional cells involving energy metabolism and homeostasis. Recently, many studies have reported the anticancer effect of irisin against different types of cancer. Translation of these findings to clinical practice for the diagnosis and treatment of several types of cancer is urgently required. In this review, we summarized preclinical and clinical studies on the anticancer effects of irisin in various types of cancer, and also discussed the mechanisms activated by irisin to suppress cancer pathogenesis. We further discussed the serum level of irisin related to different types of cancer to understand more clearly the association between irisin concentration and tumor burden. This review may serve as a solid foundation for researchers and physicians to support basic and clinical studies on irisin as a promising strategy for early diagnosis and treatment of a various types of cancers.

Abstract The main objective of this study was to provide anesthetic criteria of clove oil for an effective manipulation and transportation of red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara. When anesthesia temperature (20, 24, and 28 °C) and concentration of clove oil (25, 50, and 75 ppm) were increased, the anesthesia and recovery time decreased and tended to be similar to each other between juvenile and adult. Also, as the temperature and concentration increased, the ratio of exposure time and recovery time between juvenile and adult were decreased. When plasma cortisol concentrations were compared for 48 h after anesthesia with 50 ppm of clove oil, both the juvenile and adult fish grew up to 12 h; however, thereafter decreased and there was no significant difference from control at 48 h.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess visible implant fluorescent elastomer (VIE) tagging and stress response in marine medaka, Oryzias dancena. The experimental fish were anesthetized individually and marked with red, yellow, or green elastomer at each of the following three body locations: (1) the abdomen, (2) the back, and (3) the caudal vasculature. During 12 months, the accumulated survival rates of fish in the experimental treatments were not different among red, yellow, and green elastomers. We previously reported that 3-pentylcatechol (PC), a synthetic non-allergenic urushiol derivative, inhibited the growth of Helicobacter pylori in an in vitro assay using nutrient agar and broth. In this study, we aimed to investigate the in vivo antimicrobial activity of PC against H. pylori growing in the stomach mucous membrane. Four-week-old male C57BL/6 mice (n = 4) were orally inoculated with H. pylori Sydney Strain-1 (SS-1) for 8 weeks. Thereafter, the mice received PC (1, 5, and 15 mg/kg) and triple therapy (omeprazole, 0.7 mg/kg; metronidazole, 16.7 mg/kg; clarithromycin, 16.7 mg/kg, reference groups) once daily for 10 days. Infiltration of inflammatory cells in gastric tissue was greater in the H. pylori-infected group compared with the control group and lower in both the triple therapy- and PC-treated groups. In addition, upregulation of cytokine mRNA was reversed after infection, upon administration of triple therapy and PC. Interestingly, PC was more effective than triple therapy at all doses, even at 1/15th the dose of triple therapy. In addition, PC demonstrated synergism with triple therapy, even at low concentrations. The results suggest that PC may be more effective against H. pylori than established antibiotics.

Ionizing radiation (IR), such as X-rays and gamma (γ)-rays, mediates various forms of cancer cell death such as apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, mitotic catastrophe, and senescence. Among them, apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe are the main mechanisms of IR action. DNA damage and genomic instability contribute to IR-induced cancer cell death. Although IR therapy may be curative in a number of cancer types, the resistance of cancer cells to radiation remains a major therapeutic problem. In this review, we describe the morphological and molecular aspects of various IR-induced types of cell death. We also discuss cytogenetic variations representative of IR-induced DNA damage and genomic instability. Most importantly, we focus on several pathways and their associated marker proteins responsible for cancer resistance and its therapeutic implications in terms of cancer cell death of various types and characteristics. Finally, we propose radiation-sensitization strategies, such as the modification of fractionation, inflammation, and hypoxia and the combined treatment, that can counteract the resistance of tumors to IR.

Neurodegenerative diseases are the second most common cause of death and characterized by progressive impairments in movement or mental functioning in the central or peripheral nervous system. The prevention of neurodegenerative disorders has become an emerging public health challenge for our society. Melatonin, a pineal hormone, has various physiological functions in the brain, including regulating circadian rhythms, clearing free radicals, inhibiting biomolecular oxidation, and suppressing neuroinflammation. Cumulative evidence indicates that melatonin has a wide range of neuroprotective roles by regulating pathophysiological mechanisms and signaling pathways. Moreover, melatonin levels are decreased in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we summarize current knowledge on the regulation, molecular mechanisms and biological functions of melatonin in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, vascular dementia and multiple sclerosis. We also discuss the clinical application of melatonin in neurodegenerative disorders. This information will lead to a better understanding of the regulation of melatonin in the brain and provide therapeutic options for the treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive dysfunction and behavioral impairment. In China, the number of AD patients is growing rapidly, which poses a considerable burden on society and families. In recent years, through the advancement of genome-wide association studies, second-generation gene sequencing technology, and their application in AD genetic research, more genetic loci associated with the risk for AD have been discovered, including KCNJ15, TREM2, and GCH1, which provides new ideas for the etiology and treatment of AD. This review summarizes three early-onset AD causative genes (APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2) and some late-onset AD susceptibility genes and their mutation sites newly discovered in China, and briefly introduces the potential mechanisms of these genetic susceptibilities in the pathogenesis of AD, which would help in understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying this devastating disease.

The abnormal accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) in the central nervous system is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The regulation of the processing of the single- transmembrane amyloid precursor protein (APP) plays an important role in the generation of Aβ in the brain. The phosphorylation of APP and key enzymes involved in the proteolytic processing of APP has been demonstrated to be critical for modulating the generation of Aβ by either altering the subcellular localization of APP or changing the enzymatic activities of the secretases responsible for APP processing. In addition, the phosphorylation may also have an impact on the physiological function of these proteins. In this review, we summarize the kinases and signaling pathways that may participate in regulating the phosphorylation of APP and secretases and how this further affects the function and processing of APP and Aβ pathology. We also discuss the potential of approaches that modulate these phosphorylation-signaling pathways or kinases as interventions for AD pathology.

The unique proline isomerase Pin1 is pivotal for protecting against age-dependent neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD), with its inhibition providing a molecular link between tangle and plaque pathologies. Pin1 is oxidatively modified in human AD brains, but little is known about its regulatory mechanisms and pathological significance of such Pin1 modification. In this paper, our determination of crystal structures of oxidized Pin1 reveals a series of Pin1 oxidative modifications on Cys113 in a sequential fashion. Cys113 oxidization is further confirmed by generating antibodies specifically recognizing oxidized Cys113 of Pin1. Furthermore, Pin1 oxidation on Cys113 inactivates its catalytic activity in vitro, and Ala point substitution of Cys113 inactivates the ability of Pin1 to isomerize tau as well as to promote protein turnover of tau and APP. Moreover, redox regulation affects Pin1 subcellular localization and Pin1-mediated neuronal survival in response to hypoxia treatment. Importantly, Cys113-oxidized Pin1 is significantly increased in human AD brain comparing to age-matched controls. These results not only identify a novel Pin1 oxidation site to be the critical catalytic residue Cys113, but also provide a novel oxidative regulation mechanism for inhibiting Pin1 activity in AD. These results suggest that preventing Pin1 oxidization might help to reduce the risk of AD.

PurposeMitochondrial disease (MD) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are often associated with cardiomyopathy, but the myocardial variability has not been isolated to a specific characteristic. We evaluated the left ventricular (LV) mass by echocardiography to identify the general distribution and functional changes of the myocardium in patients with MD or DMD.MethodsWe retrospectively evaluated the echocardiographic data of 90 children with MD and 42 with DMD. Using two-dimensional echocardiography, including time-motion (M) mode and Doppler measurements, we estimated the LV mass, ratio of early to late mitral filling velocities (E/A), ratio of early mitral filling velocity to early diastolic mitral annular velocity (E/Ea), stroke volume, and cardiac output. Regulated neuronal cell death plays an essential role in biological processes in normal physiology, including the development of the nervous system. However, the deregulation of neuronal apoptosis by various factors leads to neurodegenerative diseases such as ischemic stroke and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) is a calcium/calmodulin (Ca2+/CaM)-dependent serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) protein kinase that activates death signaling and regulates apoptotic neuronal cell death. Although DAPK1 is tightly regulated under physiological conditions, DAPK1 deregulation in the brain contributes to the development of neurological disorders. In this review, we describe the molecular mechanisms of DAPK1 regulation in neurons under various stresses. We also discuss the role of DAPK1 signaling in the phosphorylation-dependent and phosphorylation-independent regulation of its downstream targets in neuronal cell death. Moreover, we focus on the major impact of DAPK1 deregulation on the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and the development of drugs targeting DAPK1 for the treatment of diseases. Therefore, this review summarizes the DAPK1 phosphorylation signaling pathways in various neurodegenerative diseases.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common monogenic form of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). FXS with ASD results from the loss of fragile X mental retardation (fmr) gene products, including fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), which triggers a variety of physiological and behavioral abnormalities. This disorder is also correlated with clock components underlying behavioral circadian rhythms and, thus, a mutation of the fmr gene can result in disturbed sleep patterns and altered circadian rhythms. As a result, FXS with ASD individuals may experience dysregulation of melatonin synthesis and alterations in melatonin-dependent signaling pathways that can impair vigilance, learning, and memory abilities, and may be linked to autistic behaviors such as abnormal anxiety responses. Although a wide variety of possible causes, symptoms, and clinical features of ASD have been studied, the correlation between altered circadian rhythms and FXS with ASD has yet to be extensively investigated. Recent studies have highlighted the impact of melatonin on the nervous, immune, and metabolic systems and, even though the utilization of melatonin for sleep dysfunctions in ASD has been considered in clinical research, future studies should investigate its neuroprotective role during the developmental period in individuals with ASD. Thus, the present review focuses on the regulatory circuits involved in the dysregulation of melatonin and disruptions in the circadian system in individuals with FXS with ASD. Additionally, the neuroprotective effects of melatonin intervention therapies, including improvements in neuroplasticity and physical capabilities, are discussed and the molecular mechanisms underlying this disorder are reviewed. The authors suggest that melatonin may be a useful treatment for FXS with ASD in terms of alleviating the adverse effects of variations in the circadian rhythm.
