Individuals often have difficulties completing tasks in a timely manner. Whether it be scheduling a doctor's appointment, purchasing a birthday gift, or booking an airline ticket, waiting until the very last minute can carry serious consequences. In two experimental studies, we explore how individuals can be encouraged to finish tasks promptly. We provide evidence for the "fresh start effect" by showing that a temporal landmark signaling a new beginning helps speed up their task completion. Notably, we demonstrate that the "fresh start nudge" can facilitate early task completion through the underlying processes of meaningfulness and motivation. We also report the moderating role of task openness, supporting the claim that the fresh start effect is stronger when the task is perceived to be relatively closed (rather than open) and must therefore be completed in fewer steps without interruption. Type 2 DM has a strong hereditary background. A study of the dermatoglyphic features can help in the early identification of people with a genetic predisposition to develop type 2 DM.Purpose of the Study: The study was aimed to compare the finger and palmar dermatoglyphics features in type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic patients and to evaluate the association with other variables.Patients and Materials: Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in one referral hospital and three primary hospitals located in Gedeo Zone. Three hundred ninety study participants (130 type 2 diabetics and 260 non-diabetics) from adult OPD and diabetic clinics were included in the study. The association among different dermatoglyphics variables was analyzed using the chi-square test. An independent t-test was conducted to analyze the mean difference and to test the significance of numerical variables. A statistically significant association was declared at P-value < 0.05.Results: In the present study, a total of 3900 digits (1300 from type

SYNOPSIS: COSO has developed frameworks for firms to improve their internal controls with the objective of reducing fraud and managing enterprise risk. The frameworks are widely used by firms and their auditors to comply with the internal control requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). We investigate two issues involving the most recent COSO internal control framework (COSO 2013): the determinants of a firm's decision to adopt it in a timely manner; and the consequences of adoption on internal controls. In our sample, firms that report internal control problems under SOX 404, especially firms with information technology (IT) problems, are likely to be late adopters. Regarding the consequences of adoption, for late adopters, we find that firms using the revised COSO framework have a lower probability of reporting weaknesses in IT-related controls. We also find evidence that COSO 2013 adoption is helpful in remediating internal control weaknesses. Data Availability: Data are available from the public sources cited in the text. This advisory case is designed to develop data analytics skills using multiple large real-world datasets based on eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). This case can also be used to introduce students to XBRL concepts such as extension taxonomies. Students are asked to recommend an XBRL preparation software for a hypothetical company (ViewDrive) that is adopting XBRL to satisfy the financial report filing requirements imposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Students perform data-cleansing (extract, transform, load) procedures to prepare large datasets for data analytics. Students are encouraged to think critically, specify assumptions before performing data analytics (using analytic software such as Tableau), and generate visualizations that support their written recommendations. The case is easy to implement, promotes active learning, and has received favorable student and instructor feedback. This case can be used to introduce technology and data analytics topics into the accounting curriculum to help satisfy AACSB's objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INVESTORS ,MATTER - Abstract
SUMMARY: We investigate whether the format of internal control weakness (ICW) disclosures required by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 influences perceptions of nonprofessional investors. Using a 2 × 2 between-participants experiment, we examine two facets of ICW disclosure formats: ICW presentation salience (high versus low) and ICW disaggregation type (disaggregated versus aggregated). We hypothesize and find evidence of an interactive effect between presentation salience and disaggregation type, such that investors perceive ICWs as less negative when they are saliently disclosed and this effect is enhanced when the material weakness is disaggregated into its individual control deficiencies. We also find evidence of moderated mediation such that high salience of ICW disclosures has a positive indirect effect on investing judgments through management trust, but only when the ICW is disaggregated into its individual control deficiencies. We investigate the impact of social media messages on nonprofessional investors' assessments of management credibility and firm value. In a between-participants experiment, we examine the joint effect of social media message vividness, valence, and micro-blogger influence on nonprofessional investors' assessments of management credibility and firm value. We find that when social media messages are pallid and negative (positive), high micro-blogger influence decreases (increases) nonprofessional investors' assessments of management credibility. In contrast, the effect is absent when messages are vivid. Further, we find that the effect of micro-blogger influence on nonprofessional investors' assessments of blogger credibility and management credibility is mediated by social media interactions. The assessment of management credibility, in turn, significantly impacts nonprofessional investors' firm valuation assessment. The results have implications for regulators (SEC 2013) that may wish to update their guidance to managers on how to monitor or even control nonprofessional investors' interaction on social media platforms. As organizations strive to meet stakeholders' needs for sustainability information, they convey their status as sustainability leaders by publishing reports and seeking sustainability awards. Our research examines whether the extent of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementation, which enables data and process integration across multiple functional areas, increases organizations' ability to capture and integrate information for sustainability reporting. We propose that ERP systems implementation increases organizations' ability to capture sustainability data and provides more and more favorable disclosures, resulting in better sustainability assessment scores by rating agencies and indices such as MSCI and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. We also pose research questions about the type of ERP modules that are implemented and how those impact the scores related to the social, environmental, and governance dimensions of sustainability leadership. Our study is expected to contribute to the sustainability reporting and reputation, and the ERP systems literature, and to practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We investigate the impact of social media messages on nonprofessional investors' assessments of management credibility and firm value. In a 2 x 2 x 2 between participants experiment with 276 participants recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, we examine the joint effect of social media message vividness, valence, and micro-blogger influence on nonprofessional investors' assessments of management credibility and firm value. We find that when social media messages are pallid and negative (positive), high micro-blogger influence decreases (increases) nonprofessional investors' assessments of management credibility. - Abstract
ChatGPT, a language-learning model chatbot, has garnered considerable attention for its ability to respond to users’ questions. Using data from 14 countries and 186 institutions, we compare ChatGPT and student performance for 28,085 questions from accounting assessments and textbook test banks. As of January 2023, ChatGPT provides correct answers for 56.5 percent of questions and partially correct answers for an additional 9.4 percent of questions. When considering point values for questions, students significantly outperform ChatGPT with a 76.7 percent average on assessments compared to 47.5 percent for ChatGPT if no partial credit is awarded and 56.5 percent if partial credit is awarded. Still, ChatGPT performs better than the student average for 15.8 percent of assessments when we include partial credit. We provide evidence of how ChatGPT performs on different question types, accounting topics, class levels, open/closed assessments, and test bank questions. We also discuss implications for accounting education and research.
