The study of charge current fluctuations (noise) can give useful insights into the properties of nanoscale systems. In this work, the peculiar properties of noise in multiterminal hybrid normal-superconducting systems are explored in the thermal out-of-equilibrium regime, i.e., when temperature biases are present ($\Delta T$-noise). Using the Landauer-B\"uttiker approach, we identify two contributions: background noise and excess noise, analyzing them when both electrical and thermal biases are applied. When temperature biases are present, and superconducting terminals are grounded, we find that the first contribution depends not only on the electrical conductance, as the Johnson-Nyquist at equilibrium, but also on a quantity strictly related to the heat conductance. This is our first main result. On the other hand, the second contribution shows, as expected, additional terms originating from the partitioning of currents into different transport channels, including the ones associated with Andreev reflection processes. However, noise induced by the temperature differences unveil also interference terms that cannot be present either in voltage bias or in the absence of any Andreev processes. Finally, we apply the results obtained to two different specific physical situations. The first is a generic three-terminal normal-superconductor-normal system, and the second is a device based on spin-resolved co-propagating chiral channels in the integer quantum Hall regime with a superconducting region. In these example setups, we investigate mainly the shot-noise regimes, when high-voltage or high-temperature biases are applied. We find remarkable differences between the two limits, which ultimately show the different nature of electrically and thermally induced charge current fluctuations., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the insulating Shastry-Sutherland compound Er$_2$Be$_2$SiO$_7$ were synthesized via a solid-state reaction and the floating zone method respectively. The crystal structure, Er single ion anisotropy, zero-field magnetic ground state, and magnetic phase diagrams along high-symmetry crystallographic directions were investigated by bulk measurement techniques, x-ray and neutron diffraction, and neutron spectroscopy. We establish that Er$_2$Be$_2$SiO$_7$ crystallizes in a tetragonal space group with planes of orthogonal Er dimers and a strong preference for the Er moments to lie in the local plane perpendicular to each dimer bond. We also find that this system has a non-collinear ordered ground state in zero field with a transition temperature of 0.841 K consisting of antiferromagnetic dimers and in-plane moments. Finally, we mapped out the $H-T$ phase diagrams for Er$_2$Be$_2$SiO$_7$ along the directions $H \parallel$ [001], [100], and [110]. While an increasing in-plane field simply induces a phase transition to a field-polarized phase, we identify three metamagnetic transitions before the field-polarized phase is established in the $H \parallel$ [001] case. This complex behavior establishes insulating Er$_2$Be$_2$SiO$_7$ and other isostructural family members as promising candidates for uncovering exotic magnetic properties and phenomena that can be readily compared to theoretical predictions of the exactly soluble Shastry-Sutherland model.

We study nonlocal thermoelectricity in a superconducting wire subject to spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field with a relative orientation $\theta$ between them. We calculate the current flowing in a normal probe attached to the bulk of a superconducting wire, as a result of a temperature difference applied at the ends of the wire. We focus on the linear response regime, corresponding to a small temperature bias. We find that the nonlocal thermoelectric response is strongly dependent on the angle $\theta$ and occurs in ranges which correspond to the emergence of Bogoliubov Fermi points in the energy spectrum of the superconducting wire.

Satellite mission planning for Earth observation satellites is a combinatorial optimization problem that consists of selecting the optimal subset of imaging requests, subject to constraints, to be fulfilled during an orbit pass of a satellite. The ever-growing amount of satellites in orbit underscores the need to operate them efficiently, which requires solving many instances of the problem in short periods of time. However, current classical algorithms often fail to find the global optimum or take too long to execute. Here, we approach the problem from a quantum computing point of view, which offers a promising alternative that could lead to significant improvements in solution quality or execution speed in the future. To this end, we study a planning problem with a variety of intricate constraints and discuss methods to encode them for quantum computers. Additionally, we experimentally assess the performance of quantum annealing and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm on a realistic and diverse dataset. Our results identify key aspects like graph connectivity and constraint structure that influence the performance of the methods. We explore the limits of today's quantum algorithms and hardware, providing bounds on the problems that can be currently solved successfully and showing how the solution degrades as the complexity grows. Growth parameters play a significant role in the crystal quality and physical properties of layered materials. Here we present a case study on a van der Waals magnetic NbFeTe2 material. Two different types of polymorphic NbFeTe2 phases, synthesized at different temperatures, display significantly different behaviors in crystal symmetry, electronic structure, electrical transport, and magnetism. While the phase synthesized at low temperature showing behavior consistent with previous reports, the new phase synthesized at high temperature, has completely different physical properties, such as metallic resistivity, long-range ferromagnetic order, anomalous Hall effect, negative magnetoresistance, and distinct electronic structures. Neutron diffraction reveals out-of-plane ferromagnetism below 70K, consistent with the electrical transport and magnetic susceptibility studies. Our work suggests that simply tuning synthetic parameters in a controlled manner could be an effective route to alter the physical properties of existing materials potentially unlocking new states of matter, or even discovering new materials., Comment: 22 Pages, 6 figures

Separating heat from charge in a material is an extremely challenging task since they are transported by the very same carriers, i.e. electrons or holes. In this Letter we show that such separation can reach 100% efficiency in a hybrid superconducting quantum Hall setup, provided that the quantum Hall system is tuned to integer filling factor. We consider multi-terminal transport through a flake of rectangular shape of a two-dimensional topological insulator in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. This system has been shown to be a second-order topological insulator, thus exhibiting corner states at its boundaries. The position of the corner states and their decay length can be controlled by the direction of the magnetic field. In the leads we assume that the magnetic field is absent and therefore we have helical one-dimensional propagating states characteristic of the spin-Hall effect. Using a low-energy effective Hamiltonian we show analytically that, in a two-terminal setup, transport can be turned on and off by a rotation of the in-plane magnetic field. Similarly, in a three terminal configuration, the in-plane magnetic field can be used to turn on and off the transmission between neighbouring contacts, thus realising a directional switch. Analytical calculations are supplemented by a numerical finite-difference method. For small values of the Fermi energy and field strength, the analytical results agree exceptionally well with the numerics. The effect of disorder is also addressed in the numerical approach. We find that the switching functionality is remarkably robust to the presence of strong disorder stemming from the topological nature of the states contributing to the electron transport., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

We propose a projection-based model order reduction procedure for the ageing of large prestressed concrete structures. Our work is motivated by applications in the nuclear industry, particularly in the simulation of containment buildings. Such numerical simulations involve a multi-modeling approach: a three-dimensional nonlinear thermo-hydro-visco-elastic rheological model is used for concrete; and prestressing cables are described by a one-dimensional linear thermo-elastic behavior. A kinematic linkage is performed in order to connect the concrete nodes and the steel nodes: coincident points in each material are assumed to have the same displacement. We develop an adaptive algorithm based on a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) in time and greedy in parameter to build a reduced order model (ROM). The nonlinearity of the operator entails that the computational cost of the ROM assembly scales with the size of the high-fidelity model. We develop an hyper-reduction strategy based on empirical quadrature to bypass this computational bottleneck: our approach relies on the construction of a reduced mesh to speed up online assembly costs of the ROM. We provide numerical results for a standard section of a double-walled containment building using a qualified and broadly-used industrial grade finite element solver for structural mechanics (code$\_$aster).

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) is an effect that has recently attracted a great deal of attention in chiral chemistry and that remains to be understood. In the CISS effect, electrons passing through chiral molecules acquire a large degree of spin polarization. In this work we study the case of atomically-thin chiral crystals created by van der Waals assembly. We show that this effect can be spectacularly large in systems containing just two monolayers, provided they are spin-orbit coupled. Its origin stems from the combined effects of structural chirality and spin-flipping spin-orbit coupling. We present detailed calculations for twisted homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides, showing that the chirality-induced spin polarization can be giant, e.g. easily exceeding $50\%$ for ${\rm MoTe}_2$. The two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) is a textbook example of frustrated magnetic systems. Despite its simplicity, the TLAF model exhibits a highly rich and complex magnetic phase diagram, featuring numerous distinct ground states that can be stabilized through frustrated next-nearest-neighbor couplings or anisotropy. In this paper, we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the TLAF material CsCeSe$_2$. The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) together with specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations of crystalline electric field suggest that the ground state of Ce ions is a Kramers doublet with strong easy-plane anisotropy. Elastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate the presence of stripe-$yz$ magnetic order that develops below $T_{\rm N} = 0.35$ K, with the zero-field ordered moment of $m_{\rm Ce} \approx 0.65~\mu_{\rm B}$. Application of magnetic field first increases the ordering temperature by about 20% at the intermediate field region and eventually suppresses the stripe order in favor of the field-polarized ferromagnetic state via a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT). The field-induced response demonstrates sizable anisotropy for different in-plane directions, $\mathbf{B}\parallel{}\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{B}\perp{}\mathbf{a}$, which indicates the presence of bond-dependent coupling in the spin Hamiltonian. We further show theoretically that the presence of anisotropic bond-dependent interactions can change the universality class of QPT for $\mathbf{B}\parallel{}\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{B}\perp{}\mathbf{a}$., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Convex functions of quantum states play a key role in quantum physics, with examples ranging from Bell inequalities to von Neumann entropy. However, in experimental scenarios, direct measurements of these functions are often impractical. We address this issue by introducing two methods for determining rigorous confidence bounds for convex functions based on informationally incomplete measurements. Our approach outperforms existing protocols by providing tighter bounds for a fixed confidence level and number of measurements. We evaluate the performance of our methods using both numerical and experimental data. We investigate traveling wave solutions for a nonlinear system of two coupled reaction-diffusion equations characterized by double degenerate diffusivity: \[n_t= -f(n,b), \quad b_t=[g(n)h(b)b_x]_x+f(n,b).\] These systems mainly appear in modeling spatial-temporal patterns during bacterial growth. Central to our study is the diffusion term $g(n)h(b)$, which degenerates at $n=0$ and $b=0$; and the reaction term $f(n,b)$, which is positive, except for $n=0$ or $b=0$. Specifically, the existence of traveling wave solutions composed by a couple of strictly monotone functions for every wave speed in a closed half-line is proved, and some threshold speed estimates are given. Moreover, the regularity of the traveling wave solutions is discussed in connection with the wave speed.

We present a component-based model order reduction procedure to efficiently and accurately solve parameterized incompressible flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equations. Our approach leverages a non-overlapping optimization-based domain decomposition technique to determine the control variable that minimizes jumps across the interfaces between sub-domains. To solve the resulting constrained optimization problem, we propose both Gauss-Newton and sequential quadratic programming methods, which effectively transform the constrained problem into an unconstrained formulation. Furthermore, we integrate model order reduction techniques into the optimization framework, to speed up computations. In particular, we incorporate localized training and adaptive enrichment to reduce the burden associated with the training of the local reduced-order models. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the overall methodology.

We present a nonlinear interpolation technique for parametric fields that exploits optimal transportation of coherent structures of the solution to achieve accurate performance. The approach generalizes the nonlinear interpolation procedure introduced in [Iollo, Taddei, J. Comput. Phys., 2022] to multi-dimensional parameter domains and to datasets of several snapshots. Given a library of high-fidelity simulations, we rely on a scalar testing function and on a point set registration method to identify coherent structures of the solution field in the form of sorted point clouds. Given a new parameter value, we exploit a regression method to predict the new point cloud; then, we resort to a boundary-aware registration technique to define bijective mappings that deform the new point cloud into the point clouds of the neighboring elements of the dataset, while preserving the boundary of the domain; finally, we define the estimate as a weighted combination of modes obtained by composing the neighboring snapshots with the previously-built mappings. We present several numerical examples for compressible and incompressible, viscous and inviscid flows to demonstrate the accuracy of the method. Furthermore, we employ the nonlinear interpolation procedure to augment the dataset of simulations for linear-subspace projection-based model reduction: our data augmentation procedure is designed to reduce offline costs -- which are dominated by snapshot generation -- of model reduction techniques for nonlinear advection-dominated problems.

We develop and analyze a parametric registration procedure for manifolds associated with the solutions to parametric partial differential equations in two-dimensional domains. Given the domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ and the manifold $M=\{ u_{\mu} : \mu\in P\}$ associated with the parameter domain $P \subset \mathbb{R}^P$ and the parametric field $\mu\mapsto u_{\mu} \in L^2(\Omega)$, our approach takes as input a set of snapshots from $M$ and returns a parameter-dependent mapping $\Phi: \Omega \times P \to \Omega$, which tracks coherent features (e.g., shocks, shear layers) of the solution field and ultimately simplifies the task of model reduction. We consider mappings of the form $\Phi=\texttt{N}(\mathbf{a})$ where $\texttt{N}:\mathbb{R}^M \to {\rm Lip}(\Omega; \mathbb{R}^2)$ is a suitable linear or nonlinear operator; then, we state the registration problem as an unconstrained optimization statement for the coefficients $\mathbf{a}$. We identify minimal requirements for the operator $\texttt{N}$ to ensure the satisfaction of the bijectivity constraint; we propose a class of compositional maps that satisfy the desired requirements and enable non-trivial deformations over curved (non-straight) boundaries of $\Omega$; we develop a thorough analysis of the proposed ansatz for polytopal domains and we discuss the approximation properties for general curved domains. We perform numerical experiments for a parametric inviscid transonic compressible flow past a cascade of turbine blades to illustrate the many features of the method.

MnSiN$_2$ is a transition metal nitride with Mn and Si ions displaying an ordered distribution on the cation sites of a distorted wurtzite-derived structure. The Mn$^{2+}$ ions reside on a 3D diamond-like covalent network with strong superexchange pathways. We simulate its electronic structure and find that the N anions in MnSiN$_2$ act as $\sigma$- and $\pi$-donors, which serve to enhance the N-mediated superexchange, leading to the high N\'{e}el ordering temperature of $T_N$ = 443 K. Polycrystalline samples of MnSiN$_2$ were prepared to reexamine the magnetic structure and resolve previously reported discrepancies. An additional magnetic canting transition is observed at $T_\mathrm{cant}$ = 433 K and the precise canted ground state magnetic structure has been resolved using a combination of DFT calculations and powder neutron diffraction. The calculations favor a $G$-type antiferromagnetic spin order with lowering to $Pc^\prime$. Irreducible representation analysis of the magnetic Bragg peaks supports the lowering of the magnetic symmetry. The computed model includes a 10$^\circ$ rotation of the magnetic spins away from the crystallographic $c$-axis consistent with measured powder neutron diffraction data modeling and a small canting of 0.6$^\circ$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We propose an automated nonlinear model reduction and mesh adaptation framework for rapid and reliable solution of parameterized advection-dominated problems, with emphasis on compressible flows. The key features of our approach are threefold: (i) a metric-based mesh adaptation technique to generate an accurate mesh for a range of parameters, (ii) a general (i.e., independent of the underlying equations) registration procedure for the computation of a mapping $\Phi$ that tracks moving features of the solution field, and (iii) an hyper-reduced least-square Petrov-Galerkin reduced-order model for the rapid and reliable estimation of the mapped solution. We discuss a general paradigm -- which mimics the refinement loop considered in mesh adaptation -- to simultaneously construct the high-fidelity and the reduced-order approximations, and we discuss actionable strategies to accelerate the offline phase. We present extensive numerical investigations for a quasi-1D nozzle problem and for a two-dimensional inviscid flow past a Gaussian bump to display the many features of the methodology and to assess the performance for problems with discontinuous solutions.

Satellite image acquisition scheduling is a problem that is omnipresent in the earth observation field; its goal is to find the optimal subset of images to be taken during a given orbit pass under a set of constraints. This problem, which can be modeled via combinatorial optimization, has been dealt with many times by the artificial intelligence and operations research communities. However, despite its inherent interest, it has been scarcely studied through the quantum computing paradigm. Taking this situation as motivation, we present in this paper two QUBO formulations for the problem, using different approaches to handle the non-trivial constraints. We compare the formulations experimentally over 20 problem instances using three quantum annealers currently available from D-Wave, as well as one of its hybrid solvers. Fourteen of the tested instances have been obtained from the well-known SPOT5 benchmark, while the remaining six have been generated ad-hoc for this study. Our results show that the formulation and the ancilla handling technique is crucial to solve the problem successfully. Finally, we also provide practical guidelines on the size limits of problem instances that can be realistically solved on current quantum computers.

Fluorescent Neuronal Cells v2 is a collection of fluorescence microscopy images and the corresponding ground-truth annotations, designed to foster innovative research in the domains of Life Sciences and Deep Learning. This dataset encompasses three image collections in which rodent neuronal cells' nuclei and cytoplasm are stained with diverse markers to highlight their anatomical or functional characteristics. Alongside the images, we provide ground-truth annotations for several learning tasks, including semantic segmentation, object detection, and counting. The contribution is two-fold. First, given the variety of annotations and their accessible formats, we envision our work facilitating methodological advancements in computer vision approaches for segmentation, detection, feature learning, unsupervised and self-supervised learning, transfer learning, and related areas. Second, by enabling extensive exploration and benchmarking, we hope Fluorescent Neuronal Cells v2 will catalyze breakthroughs in fluorescence microscopy analysis and promote cutting-edge discoveries in life sciences. We derive bounds to the thermodynamic uncertainty relations in the linear-response regime for steady-state transport in two-terminal systems when time reversal symmetry is broken. We find that such bounds are different for charge and heat currents and depend on the details of the system, through the Onsager coefficients, and on the ratio between applied voltage and temperature difference. As a function of such a ratio, the bounds can take any positive values. The bounds are then calculated for a hybrid coherent superconducting system using the scattering approach, and the concrete case of an Andreev interferometer is explored. Interestingly, we find that the bound on the charge current is always smaller than 2 when the system operates as a heat engine, while the bound on the heat current is always larger than 2 when the system operates as a refrigerator., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The kagome lattice can host exotic magnetic phases arising from frustrated and competing magnetic interactions. However, relatively few insulating kagome materials exhibit incommensurate magnetic ordering. Here, we present a study of the magnetic structures and interactions of antiferromagnetic Na$_2$Mn$_3$Cl$_8$ with an undistorted Mn$^{2+}$ kagome network. Using neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic measurements, we show that Na$_2$Mn$_3$Cl$_8$ hosts two different incommensurate magnetic states, which develop at $T_{N1} = 1.6$ K and $T_{N2} = 0.6$ K. Magnetic Rietveld refinements indicate magnetic propagation vectors of the form $\mathbf{q} = (q_{x},q_{y},\frac{3}{2})$, and our neutron-diffraction data can be well described by cycloidal magnetic structures. By optimizing exchange parameters against magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we show that the spin Hamiltonian contains ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic third-neighbor Heisenberg interactions, with a significant contribution from long-ranged dipolar coupling. This experimentally-determined interaction model is compared with density-functional-theory simulations. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that these competing interactions explain the experimental observation of multiple incommensurate magnetic phases and may stabilize multi-$\mathbf{q}$ states. A true understanding of the properties of pnictide superconductors require the development of high-quality materials and performing measurements designed to unravel their intrinsic properties and short-range nematic correlations which are often obscured by extrinsic effects such as poor crystallinity, inhomogeneity, domain formation and twinning. In this paper, we report the systematic growth of high-quality Na-substituted BaFe2As2 single crystals and their characterization using pulsed-magnetic fields x-ray diffraction and x-ray diffuse scattering. Analysis of the properties and compositions of the highest quality crystals show that their actual Na stoichiometry is about 50-60% of the nominal content and that the targeted production of crystals with specific compositions is accessible. We derived a reliable equation to estimate the Na stoichiometry based on the measured superconducting TC of these materials. Attempting to force spin reorientation and induce tetragonality, orthorhombic Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 single crystals subjected to out-of-plane magnetic fields up to 31.4T are found to exhibit strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy demonstrated by the insufficiency of such high fields in manipulating the relative population of their twinned domains or in suppressing the orthorhombic order. Broad x-ray diffuse intensity rods observed at temperatures between 30 K and 300 K uncover short-range structural correlations. Local structure modeling together with 3D-{\Delta}PDF mapping of real-space interatomic vectors show that the diffuse scattering arises from in-plane short-range chemical correlations of the Ba and Na atoms coupled with short-range atomic displacements within the same plane due to an effective size difference between the two atomic species.

Two-dimensional second-order topological insulators are characterized by the presence of topologically protected zero-energy bound states localized at the corners of a flake. In this paper we theoretically study the occurrence and features of such corner states inside flakes in the shape of a convex polygon. We consider two different models, both in Cartan class IIIA, the first obeying inversion symmetry and the other obeying a combined $\pi/4$ rotation symmetry and time-reversal symmetry ($\hat{C}_4^z\hat{T}$). By using an analytical effective model of an edge corresponding to a massive Dirac fermion, we determine the presence of a corner state between two given edges by studying the sign of their induced masses and derive general rules for flakes in the shape of a convex polygon. In particular, we find that the number of corner states in a flake is always two in the first model, while in the second model there are either 0, 2 or 4. To corroborate our findings, we focus on flakes of specific shapes (a triangle and a square) and use a numerical finite-difference approach to determine the features of the corner states in terms of their probability density. In the case of a triangular flake, we can change the position of corner states by rotating the flake in the first model, while in the second model we can also change their number. Remarkably, when the induced mass of an edge is zero the corresponding corner state becomes delocalized along the edge. In the case of a square flake and the model with $\hat{C}_4^z\hat{T}$ symmetry, there is an orientation of the flake with respect to the crystal axes, for which the corner states extend along the whole perimeter of the square., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures
