A β-NMR study of 12B implanted in diamond was performed in order to investigate the implantation sites and the defects. The maintained polarization of 12B was measured by use of widely modulated rf around the Larmor frequency (ν = νL ± 200 kHz) as a function of temperature from 160 K to 320 K. The observed polarization was found to be almost constant at about 0.9 % in this temperature range. The initial polarization for this system was obtained as about 8.1 %. Therefore about 10 % of the implanted 12B maintained its polarization in this frequency range. Conversely, about 90 % of the implanted 12B was undetected in the present experiment. more...

Production of spin polarized short-lived nucleus 12N (I π = 1 + , T 1/2 = 11 ms) using heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies has been performed. Typical polarization of about −25 % and +10 % through the projectile fragmentation Be(14N, 12N)X and the charge exchange CH2(12C, 12N)X processes, respectively, was obtained. The present study proved that the combination of a 12C beam and a proton target provides a fairly good quality of polarized 12N beam in terms of intensity and energy uniformity, and is promising for materials science use of 12N as a nuclear probe. more...

Measurements of the spin-spin relaxation time T2 of the short-lived \(\upbeta \)-emitter \(^{12}B (I^{\uppi }\) = 1 + , T1/2 = 20 ms) in Si have been performed. By applying the spin echo method to \(\upbeta \)-NMR measurements, the intrinsic T2 for 12B in Si was successfully determined with the effect of the static magnetic field inhomogeneity removed. The temperature dependence of T2 for 12B in Si shows that T2 becomes longer with increasing temperature, which seems to reflect the effect of motional narrowing. more...

Dependence of quasi-particle alignment on proton and neutron numbers has been studied in A = 80 mass region through g-factor measurements by using TMF-IMPAD. The experimental results show that for the nuclides 84Zr, 85Zr and 86Zr with Z = 40 the proton alignment is followed by the neutron alignment in 84Zr and 85Zr, while the neutron alignment is followed by the proton alignment in 86Zr, and for the nuclides 82Sr, 83Y, 84Zr and 85Nb with N = 44 the proton aligns only in 82Sr, the proton alignment occurs first that is followed by the neutron alignment in 83Y and 84Zr and the neutron alignment is followed by the proton alignment in 85Nb. Proton and/or neutron alignments lead to different patterns of the g-factor variation with spin. more...

A compact β -ray detecting nuclear magnetic/quadrupole resonance system with a permanent magnet was developed at ISAC/TRIUMF to measure ground-state electromagnetic moments of short-lived nuclei. Polarized Na beams produced using the collinear optical-pumping technique were used to demonstrate the properties of the system. The degree of nuclear polarization and the spin–lattice relaxation times of the 20,21,26,27,28Na isotopes in NaF, TiO2, LiNbO3, MgF2, ZnO, Pt, and Mg single crystals at room temperature are reported. The electric-quadrupole coupling constants of 20,21Na in TiO2, ZnO and Mg, and that of 27Na in ZnO are also reported. The quadrupole moments of 20,21Na were extracted from the electric-quadrupole coupling constants in ZnO, using the known quadrupole moment of 27Na. more...

The quadrupole moment of light nuclei 17F in the ground state (Iπ = 5/2+) is measured by the β–NMR method. The effective charge of the last proton in a d5/2 orbit for 17F is extracted from the measured quadrupole moment Q(17F) divided by the quadrupole moment Qsp calculated with a single particle model. A proton effective charge of eeffp = 1.12 ± 0.07e is obtained, which is in agreement with that given by a particle–vibration coupling model calculation within the experimental error. The present value of the proton effective charge is strong evidence for the existence of a proton skin in 17F (Iπ = 5/2+). more...

The β-NMR of short-lived β-emitter 12N(I π = 1+, T 1/2 = 11ms) in a rutile TiO2 single crystal has been measured as functions of temperature and external magnetic field. Atomic motion induced spin lattice relaxation was observed for two known sites, O substitutional and interstitial sites. The data were analyzed in terms of the thermal atomic jump, which suggests that the motion of defects around the substitutional 12N atom for O, and of the interstitial 12N atom are attributed to the spin lattice relaxation. The electric field gradients have shown temperature dependence for both sites, which is probably due to the thermal expansion of rutile. more...

We report on the calculation of electric field gradients (EFGs) of MgF2, MnF2, CoF2, NiF2 and ZnF2. EFGs were calculated by the full potential Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method in the framework of the density functional theory. While EFG calculation of these fluorides are rather difficult in the muffin-tin-potential model, due to its sensitivity to the muffin-tin radius, no difficulties arise in the present full potential treatments. EFGs calculated by this method well reproduce experimental data. more...

We have investigated the radiation damage effects on a charge-coupled device (CCD) to be used for the Japanese X-ray mission, the monitor of all-sky X-ray image (MAXI), onboard the international space station (ISS). A temperature dependence of the dark current as a function of incremental dose is studied. We found that the protons having energy of >292 keV seriously increased the dark current of the devices. In order to improve the radiation tolerance of the devices, we have developed various device architectures to minimize the radiation damage in orbit. Among them, nitride oxide enables us to reduce the dark current significantly and therefore we adopted nitride oxide for the flight devices. We also compared the dark current of a device in operation and that out of operation during the proton irradiation. The dark current of the device in operation became twofold that out of operation, and we thus determined that devices would be turned off during the passage of the radiation belt. The temperature dependence of the dark current enables us to determine the electron trap level that generates the dark current. We fitted dark current as a function of temperature by the thoretical models and found that the dark current increase after proton irradiations is caused by, at least, two kinds of electron trap levels. The shallow trap level (Ec-Et 210 K. On the other hand, another trap level is located roughly at the center of the silicon bandgap which might be associated with divacancies or P–V traps. We finally investigated the spatial distribution of the low-energy protons in the orbit of the ISS. Their density has a peak around l ~20° and b ~-55° independent of the altitude. The peak value is roughly two orders of magnitude higher than that at the South Atlantic Anomaly. more...

Radiation effects have been studied in modified 316L stainless steel and commercially available stainless steel and tungsten by the heavy ion irradiation simulation and positron lifetime techniques. The experimental results show that the radiation resistant property of stainless steel is much better than that of tungsten, and the modified 316L stainless steel is the best among them. The stainless steel is a good choice for the beam window material of the ADS spallation neutron source system, and the modified 316L stainless steel is the best choice. more...

The g-factors of Ground Rotational Band states of N = 44 isotones 82Sr, 83Y, 84Zr and 85Nb have been measured by the transient-magnetic-field ion implantation perturbed angular distribution (TMF-IMPAD) method. The measured g-factors of 82Sr increase with the increase of spin I, indicating a proton alignment only. Positive peaks appear in the variation of g-factors with spin for 83Y and 84Zr at spin 21/2+ and 10+ respectively, indicating a proton alignment followed by a neutron alignment. A negative peak occurs for 85Nb at the spin 25/2+, indicating a neutron alignment followed by a proton alignment. more...

The alignment correlation terms in the β-ray angular distributions from the purely spin aligned mirror pair 12B(Iπ= 1+ T1/2 = 20.2ms) and 12N(Iπ = 1+,T1/2 = 11.0ms)were precisely measured to place a new limit on the G-parity conservation law. For the creation of the alignment, the spin manipulation technique was applied, which utilized the nuclear quadrupole interactions. The - parity violating induced tensor coefficient was determined to be 2MfT/fa = -0,15 ± 0,12 ± 0,05 (theor.), which is consistent with the theoretical prediction based on QCD in which 2MfT/fA is proportional to the mass difference between up and down quarks which constitute the nucleon. Also determined the axial charge to be y= 4,90±0,10 (90% CL). From the result, we have found that the nucleon mass inside the nucleus is reduced (16 4)% relative to the free nucleon mass more...

The β-NMR detection of 12B ( Iπ= 1+, T1/2 = 20.2 msec) implanted in a TiO2 (rutile) single crystal following a nuclear reaction showed that its spin polarization produced in the reaction is totally maintained during its lifetime. Two implantation sites with relative populations 9:1 were identified. The electric field gradients (EFGs) were determined to be q = +(37.1 0.5) 1015 V/cm2 with η< 0.03 and q = +(185 5) 1015 V/cm2 with η= 0.62 0.02 for the major (90%) and minor (10%) sites, respectively. The EFGs were compared with the theoretical values given by the band-structure calculation in the framework of the KKR method. TiO2 crystals with proper treatment can be a good “Spin Dewar” in which any short-lived nuclei can be implanted, and their spin polarizations as produced in nuclear reactions can be maintained during their lifetime more...

In order to disclose the polarization mechanism of the tilted-foil technique, systematic experimental studies were performed through direct observations of the nuclear polarization of short-lived beta-emitters. The present studies concentrated on the mechanisms of the following processes: (1) production of atomic polarization in the beam–tilted-foil interaction, (2) polarization transfer between an atom and a nucleus, and (3) enhancement of nuclear polarization by the beam multi-tilted-foil interaction. The present results have confirmed the plausibility of a previous model in which the atomic-polarization process in the tilted-foil technique is attributed to the right–left asymmetry of the electron-capture process at the final surface of a tilted foil. The enhancement effect of nuclear polarization by the multi-tilted-foil technique could be consistently explained by a model proposed by Goldring and Niv. Further information on atomic processes is required to make a definite statement on hyperfine interactions and atomic configurations, which contribute to polarization transfer. more...

In order to precisely determine the |eqQ(41Sc)/h| of 41Sc(Iπ=7/2−, T1/2=0.596 s) implanted in a TiO2 single crystal the electric field gradient tensor and anisotropic chemical shift were determined by detecting the Fourier Transformed Pulse-NMR of 45Sc(Iπ=7/2−, stable) in the crystal at a high field of 7.0 T and 9.4 T. Combining the new |eqQ(41Sc)/h| value with the Q(45Sc)=−(23.6±0.2) fm2, also renewed by using the known atomic hyperfine interaction constants and Sternheimer polarization effect, the |Q(41Sc;Iπ=7/2−,T1/2=0.596 s)|=(15.6±0.3) fm2 has been precisely determined. The β-ray angular distributions from purely spin aligned 12B and 12N were precisely remeasured using a further refined spin-manipulation technique. The result is consistent with the theoretical prediction in the framework of which induced tensor form factor is proportional to u- and d-quark mass difference. The electric quadrupole interaction of 19O(Iπ=(5/2)+, T1/2=27.0 s) in TiO2 single crystal was studied in detail by means of the β-NQR to determine the electric quadrupole moments Q of short-lived β-emitting nuclei 19O and 13O(Iπ=(3/2)-, T1/2=8.6 ms). Two implantation sites were found for the implanted O nucleus and the quadrupole coupling constants of 19O at these sites were determined. We observed FT-NMR of the enriched stable isotope 17O in TiO2 and obtained the electric field gradient (EFG) at the oxygen substitutional site. We present ab initio calculations of electric field gradients (EFGs) at impurity sites in ionic crystals TiO2, Al2O3 and CaCO3. The electronic structure was calculated self-consistently by the KKR method in the framework of the local spin density approximation of the density functional theory. The system with a single impurity was simulated by the super cell method. It was found that EFGs for the transition metal impurities (Sc, Nb, Cd and Ta) in TiO2 were well reproduced by the calculations if the charge state of them in TiO2 was taken into account. The present method was applied to the determination of the implantation sites of N and O nuclei in TiO2. The calculation of EFGs at a Si impurity in Al2O3 and at Ca site in CaCO3 were used to derive the quadrupole moments of 27Si and 39Ca from their quadrupole coupling constants. more...

The Knight shifts K for short-lived β emitters 12N and 27Si implanted in Pt have been measured by means of β-NMR technique. The results were K(12N in Pt)= +(5.8 ± 2.1)× 10-4 and K(27Si in Pt)= +(1.4 ± 0.8)× 10-3. The spin–lattice relaxation time T1 was measured for 12N in Pt. The result was T1(12N in Pt, T=300 K)= 66 ± 8 ms, thus, T1T= 20 ± 2 Ks. The present Knight shifts are in good agreement with the KKR band structure calculation with local lattice relaxation determined theoretically. more...
