Abstract

Sub-Neptunes with radii of 2–3 R _⊕ are intermediate in size between rocky planets and Neptune-sized planets. The orbital properties and bulk compositions of transiting sub-Neptunes provide clues to the formation and evolution of close-in small planets. In this paper, we present the discovery and follow-up of four sub-Neptunes orbiting M dwarfs (TOI-782, TOI-1448, TOI-2120, and TOI-2406), three of which were newly validated by ground-based follow-up observations and statistical analyses. TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b have radii of ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}={2.740}_{-0.079}^{+0.082}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ , ${2.769}_{-0.068}^{+0.073}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ , 2.120 ± 0.067 R _⊕ , and ${2.830}_{-0.066}^{+0.068}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ and orbital periods of P = 8.02, 8.11, 5.80, and 3.08 days, respectively. Abstract

We report on the discovery of an Earth-sized transiting planet ( R _p = 1.015 ± 0.051 R _⊕ ) in a P = 4.02 day orbit around K2-415 (EPIC 211414619), an M5V star at 22 pc. The planet candidate was first identified by analyzing the light-curve data obtained by the K2 mission, and it is here shown to exist in the most recent data from TESS. Combining the light curves with the data secured by our follow-up observations, including high-resolution imaging and near-infrared spectroscopy with IRD, we rule out false-positive scenarios, finding a low false-positive probability of 2 × 10 ^−4 . Based on IRD’s radial velocities of K2-415, which were sparsely taken over three years, we obtain a planet mass of 3.0 ± 2.7 M _⊕ ( M _p < 7.5 M _⊕ at 95% confidence) for K2-415b. Being one of the lowest-mass stars (≈0.16 M _⊙ ) known to host an Earth-sized transiting planet, K2-415 will be an interesting target for further follow-up observations, including additional radial velocity monitoring and transit spectroscopy.

Abstract

Exoplanet surveys around M dwarfs have detected a growing number of exoplanets with Earth-like insolation. It is expected that some of those planets are rocky planets with the potential for temperate climates favourable to surface liquid water. However, various models predict that terrestrial planets orbiting in the classical habitable zone around M dwarfs have no water or too much water, suggesting that habitable planets around M dwarfs might be rare. Here we present the results of an updated planetary population synthesis model, which includes the effects of water enrichment in the primordial atmosphere, caused by the oxidation of atmospheric hydrogen by rocky materials from incoming planetesimals and from the magma ocean. We find that this water production in the primordial atmosphere is found to significantly impact the occurrence of terrestrial rocky aqua planets, yielding ones with diverse water content. Abstract

A majority of stars in the solar neighbourhood are M dwarfs with subsolar mass and luminosity. Recent exoplanet surveys around M dwarfs have detected a growing number of exoplanets with Earth-like insolation. Those exoplanets are expected to include habitable planets with temperate climates. Climatology, however, indicates that planetary habitability requires not only moderate stellar insolation but also an appropriate amount of seawater. Previous models of planetary population synthesis predict that terrestrial planets orbiting in the habitable zone around M dwarfs have no water or too much water, leading to a discouraging conclusion that habitable planets are pretty rare around M dwarfs. Here we develop a new planetary population synthesis model, introducing updated theories for several components of the planet formation process and the effects of water vapour enrichment in the primordial atmosphere of nebular origin; such enrichment can occur through water production by oxidation of the atmospheric hydrogen with rocky materials from incoming planetesimals and the magma ocean. Our state-of-the-art model of planetary population synthesis yields rocky planets with a wide range of water content. In particular, the water production in the primordial atmosphere is found to significantly impact the occurrence of Earth-like aqua planets. Our results suggest that aqua planets with appropriate amounts of seawater for temperate climates will be normally found around M dwarfs, encouraging efforts of M dwarf habitable planet search, in contrast to the prediction of the previous models.

The planetary bulk and atmospheric compositions bear the marks of the way the planets formed: Ariel’s observations will therefore provide an unprecedented wealth of data to advance our understanding of planet formation in our Galaxy. A number of environmental and evolutionary factors, however, can affect the final atmospheric composition. Abstract

The chemical structure of a branch point of star-shaped polymers has been considered to have a small influence on the physical properties of the entire polymer. Contrary to this general notion, here we show that a 3-arm star polymer, composed of three poly(δ-valerolactone) arms extended from one side of a triptycene branch point, exhibits a remarkably high complex viscosity, compared to the analogous star-shaped polymers with a branch point of a triptycene isomer or triphenylethane.

Abstract

We present the discovery and validation of a temperate sub-Neptune around the nearby mid-M dwarf TIC 470381900 (TOI-1696), with a radius of $3.09 \pm 0.11 \,R_\oplus$ and an orbital period of $2.5 \,\rm{days}$, using a combination of TESS and follow-up observations using ground-based telescopes. Joint analysis of multi-band photometry from TESS, MuSCAT, MuSCAT3, Sinistro, and KeplerCam confirmed the transit signal to be achromatic as well as refined the orbital ephemeris. High-resolution imaging with Gemini/'Alopeke and high-resolution spectroscopy with the Subaru/IRD confirmed that there are no stellar companions or background sources to the star. The spectroscopic observations with IRD and IRTF/SpeX were used to determine the stellar parameters, and found the host star is an M4 dwarf with an effective temperature of $T_{eff} = 3185 \pm 76\,\rm{K}$ and a metallicity of [Fe/H] $=0.336 \pm 0.060 \,\rm{dex}$. The radial velocities measured from IRD set a $2$-$\sigma$ upper limit on the planetary mass to be $48.8 \,M_\oplus$. The large radius ratio ($R_p/R_\star \sim 0.1$) and the relatively bright NIR magnitude ($J=12.2 \,\rm{mag}$) make this planet an attractive target for further followup observations. We identified the transit signal from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite photometric data, which we confirmed with ground-based photometric observations using the multiband imagers MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT3. Combining these data with other follow-up observations including high-resolution spectroscopy with the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph, high-resolution imaging with the SPeckle Polarimeter, and radial velocity (RV) measurements with the InfraRed Doppler instrument, we find that the planet has a radius of 1.74±0.08R⊕⁠, a mass of, Funding for the TESS mission is provided by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. Abstract

Recent detection of exoplanets with Earth-like insolation attracts growing interest in how common Earth-like aqua planets are beyond the solar system. While terrestrial planets are often assumed to capture icy or water-rich planetesimals, a primordial atmosphere of nebular origin itself can produce water through oxidation of the atmospheric hydrogen with oxidising minerals from incoming planetesimals or the magma ocean. Thermodynamically, normal oxygen buffers produce water comparable in mole number to or more than hydrogen. Thus, the primordial atmosphere would likely be highly enriched with water vapour; however, the primordial atmosphereshave been always assumed to have the solar abundances. Here we integrate the 1D structure of such an enriched atmosphere of sub-Earths embedded in a protoplanetary disc around an M dwarf of 0.3$M_\odot$ and investigate the effects of water enrichment on the atmospheric properties with focus on water amount. We find that the well-mixed, highly-enriched atmosphere is more massive by a few orders of magnitude than the solar-abundance atmosphere, and that even a Mars-mass planet can obtain water comparable to the present Earth's oceans. Although close-in Mars-mass planets likely lose the captured water via disc dispersal and photo-evaporation, these results suggest that there are more sub-Earths with Earth-like water contents than previously predicted. How much water terrestrial planets really obtain and retain against subsequent loss, however, depends on efficiencies of water production, mixing in the atmosphere and magma ocean, and photo-evaporation, detailed investigation for which should be made in the future., 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present observations of two bright M dwarfs (TOI-1634 and TOI-1685: $J=9.5-9.6$) hosting ultra-short period (USP) planets, identified by the TESS mission. The two stars are similar in temperature, mass, and radius ($T_\mathrm{eff}\,\approx\,3500$ K, $M_\star\,\approx\,0.45-0.46\,M_\odot$, and $R_\star\approx 0.45-0.46\,R_\odot$), and the planets are both super-Earth-sized ($1.25\,R_\oplus, Comment: 29 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables; AJ in press

Abstract

前壁, 後壁補強による従来の鼠径ヘルニア手術は筋膜緊張による疼痛と再発が問題であった.癖痛の軽減と再発の減少を目指して成人の鼠径ヘルニア25例に対して腹腔鏡下のヘルニア修復術を試み, 同期間に主としてMcVay法にて修復した17例と比較検討した.腹腔内より腹膜を開き, ポリプロピレンメッシュを内, 外鼠径および大腿ヘルニア発生部位を覆うように腹横筋膜上に展開し, ステイプラーにてメッシュをCooper靱帯, 鼠径靱帯および腹横筋膜に固定した.両群とも最長13か月の追跡で再発を認めなかった.腹腔鏡下修復術では術後疼痛は少なく全例手術翌日から歩行可能で, 再発鼠径ヘルニア3例の感想では前回手術より疼痛が少なかった.腹腔鏡下手術の25例中20例 (80%) は9日以内に退院した.従来方法では10日以内に退院した症例はなかった.以上の結果から腹腔鏡下ヘルニア修復術は安全で侵襲の少ない手術であると考える.

Abstract

The presence of arteriovenous communications (AVCs) in the lower extremi ties of patients with primary varicose veins with or without ulcerations was inves tigated by use of thermography, analysis of the blood oxygen tension, and observation under operative microscopy. Fifty-six subjects, including 20 normal subjects and 26 patients with primary varicose veins, were studied. Subjects maintained a standing position in a quiet room while thermography was performed both before and after exercise. The exercise was performed tiptoeing at a rate of twenty times per minute. After exer cise, hot spots on the lower extremities of the patients with varicose veins were localized by thermography. In the normal subjects, blood samples were aspi rated percutaneously from the femoral artery and vein before and after lumbar anesthesia. In the patients with primary varicose veins, an incision was made in the inguinal region following lumbar anesthesia and samples of blood were aspirated from the femoral artery and vein, the saphenous vein, and the ther mographic hot spots. The venous and arterial blood oxygen tensions were deter mined immediately in the hospital laboratory by means of a blood gas analyzer. After lumbar anesthesia, there were significant differences between the oxy gen tensions of the hot spots and those of the femoral or saphenous veins in the patients with varicose veins (p < 0.01, p < 0.05). At operation, the hot spots were investigated by operative dissection and microscopy. Small, pulsating arteries were observed at the sites that corresponded to the hot spots. These results strongly suggest that AVCs open up in the dermal capillary bed as the result of a persis tently high venous pressure, and these shunts, by diverting oxygenated blood away from the overlying skin, produce skin ischemia and ulceration.

Abstract

Aneurysms of the spleen are relatively rare, and are found in a frequency ranging from 0.01% to 0.04% at necropsy. In Japan more than 170 cases have been documented. In this paper we describe a case of splenic aneurysm coexisting with a splenic cyst.A 62-year-old female was pointed out to have a swelling of the spleen at medical examination, and was admitted to the hospital for further close examinations. Ultrasonography and CT revealed a 87×81 mm splenic cyst, a 20×28 mm splenic aneurysm, and liver cirrhosis. Selective angiography of the celiac artery showed the partially calcified aneurysm at slightly central-side of hilum lineis. Excision of tail of pancreas including the aneurysm and splenectomy were carried out. The disease, lacking in specific manifestations, is associated with portal hypertension in a frequency of about 50% of the cases. When a swelling of the spleen and portal hypertension are found, we should bear in mind a possible occurrence of the disease and, if it is actual, operation in an early stage should be given priority over other treatments, because it has a high mortality, if ruptured.

Abstract

Although for cases undergoing palliative surgery of abdominal aortic aneurysms (below: AAA), surgical replacement with a Y-shaped artificial blood vessel is an operation with a relatively high degree of safety, in recent years with the expansion of indications the elderly and high risk patients have tended to increase. Forty-six patients who underwent AAA palliative surgery at our faculty from 1978 through 1989 were classified them according to termination into 3 groups, namely, early death, late death and survival, and compared for age, maximum diameter of aneurysm, operating time, amount of blood loss and preoperative risk factors. In evaluating preoperative risk factors, we used a risk index score (below: RIS) by assigning points to 7 items (I. cardiac function, II. renal function, III. respiratory function, IV. cerebral vascular disorder, V. hypertension, VI. diabetes and VII. hyperlipidemia). Based on the results of this study on the propriety of this RIS, the following conclusions, could be obtained, (1) Among the 3 groups, a statistically significant difference was observed only in regard to RIS. (2) In comparing the survival rate of the 3 groups according to high (H), moderate (M) or low (L) RIS total scores, a significant difference after 3 years was observed between the H group and the other 2 groups, L and M. (3) All cases of early death had high RIS scores. (4) This RIS is considered to be appropriate as an objective evaluation method of high risk.

Abstract

Two cases of popliteal artery aneurysm presenting with symptoms of acute arterial occlusion are reported. Case 1: A 79-year-old female was diagnosed as having bilateral popliteal artery aneurysms with thrombosis of the right aneurysm by conventional angiography and CT. This patient was treated with expanded PTFE bypass grafting with resection of the bilateral aneurysms. Case 2: A 60-year-old male was diagnosed as having a right popliteal artery aneurysm by conventional angiography and MRI. This patient was treated with autovein bypass grafting with ligation of the aneurysm for exclusion. Popliteal aneurysms semetimes complicate by thrombosis, embolism, and amputation, therefore elective replacement of the aneurysms at the time of diagnosis are really recommended.

Abstract

We present herein a case of a 40-year-old male with early gallbladder cancer derived from a Rokitanski-Aschoff sinus (RAS). The patient originally presented at our hospital with epigastric discomfort, following which a diagnosis of adenomyomatosis (ADM) of the gallbladder was made, and a cholecystectomy performed. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed a 7-mm well-differentiated papillo-tubular adenocarcinoma in the RAS epithelium in the body of the gallbladder. The RAS extended to the “pm” layer but the adenocarcinoma was an in situ lesion localized within the RAS epithelium. Considering the difficulties in making an early diagnosis of gallbladder cancer, active surgery should be performed for patients in whom ADM is seen in the gallbladder.

Abstract

The clinical diagnosis of idiopathic dilatation of the pulmonary artery (IDPA) has, until recently, been difficult to differentiate from other diseases associated with pulmonary artery dilatation. Antemortem diagnosis of this anomaly has become possible with the accumlation of knoweldge about congenital heart diseases and progress in the diagnostic methods (cardiac catheterization, computed tomography, echocardiography, etc.). Forty-seven cases of this anomaly, including this case have been reported in Japan. We experienced a case of a 69 year-old female suspected of having thoracic aneurysm. Her chief complaint was slight dizziness. There was no significant past history. A grade 11/6 (Levine) systolic murmur was audible at the left second and third intercostal space. The electrocardiogram was within normal limits. The X-ray film of the chest showed an enlargement of the left second portion. The angiocardiogram and computed tomogram showed a dilatation of the main trunk of the pulmonary artery. Cardiac catherization showed no evidence of shunts. The right ventricular and pulmonary pressure were 37/6 and 30/12mmHg respectively. The clinical diagnosis was IDPA. IDPA is a benign lesion and does not affect cardiac function to any detectable symptoms according to reports in the literature. In differential diagnosis of patients with heart murmur at the pulmonary area and dilatation of the left second portion without evidence of enlargement of the cardiac chambers on X-ray film of the chest, IDPA is important, even though such cases are rare.

Abstract

A fifty-one-year-old Japanese man with Werner's syndrome underwent suc cessful reconstruction of peripheral arteries. His chief complaints were rest pain and intermittent claudication in the left lower extremity. Clinical manifestations included short stature, low body weight, stocky trunk with thin limbs, graying hair, peripheral muscular atrophy, a high-pitched voice, bilateral cataracts, typical facies, atrophic skin, and diabetes mellitus. Angiograms showed multi ple and severe calcified stenoses of the left femoropopliteal artery. The operative method used was semiclosed thromboendarterectomy. To the authors' knowledge, this case is the first surgical correction of a pe ripheral vascular lesion in a patient with Werner's syndrome.

Abstract

To perform efficient arteriography for patients with arterial occlusive dis-ease of the lower limbs, a new system for serial whole-limb arteriography with extra-large-film changer was developed and clinically applied. This system consists of a motor driven cassette-film changer with four pieces of film sized 35.4×106.2 cm per frame, and ancillary fluoroscopic facilities. The source-image distance is 1.6m high to cover a wider field and to minimize radio-graphical blur. The film is 35.4 ×106.2cm, sufficient to cover the pelvis and both legs in average sized Japanese patients. The serial angiographic mode can be timed at 1 frame per 1.5 sec exposures at a shorter range and at 1 frame per 10 sec exposures at a longer range. A intensifying screen and a equalized alminium wedge filter are adopted to obtain an adequate density as uniform as possible in the abdomen down to the calf. Last 2 years, the author performed 67 occasions of Aorto-arteriography for 46 patients with arterial occlusive disease of the lower limbs. They were 25 patients with arterioscle-rosis obliterans, 14 patients with thromboangitis obliterans, and 7 patients with other arterial occlusive disease. Excellent results were obtained with our new system in serial whole-limb arteriography.

Abstract

The patient, a 34-year-old woman, had a sudden swelling of the right upper extremity and was diagnosed as having Paget-Schroetter syndrome after detection of complete obstruction of the right subclavian vein by phlebography. Anticoagulant and fibrinolytic therapy was immediately performed, resulting in improvement of her clinical condition and satisfactory development of collateral circulations. Paget-Schroetter syndrome is a rare disease, and 29 cases including this one have been reported in Japan. Investigation of cases reported from Europe and America as well as from Japan revealed that the symptom often occurs in the right upper extremity of males in their 20s and 30s and that the initial symptom is so characteristic that the diagnosis is easy, requiring phlebography for definite diagnosis. As for treatment, it is difficult to succeed in thrombectomy, possibly causing a complicating pulmonary embolism, and it is consequently thought to be important to begin fibrinolytic therapy combined with anticoagulant therapy for development of collateral circulations, immediately after the occurrence.

Abstract

The reactions of the subpapillary venous plexus were observed by analyzed fractional blood volume of tissue (Vb) in patients with arterial occlusive dis eases, Fontaine's stage I-II, using the reflective spectrophotometer. The sole skin of 11 normal subjects, 17 patients with arteriosclerosis obli terans (ASO), and 14 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) were scanned by the light reflectance of four specially selected wavelengths, including isobestic points (586 and 569 nm) and peaks in the spectra of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin (577 and 560 nm) in referring to time. Sampling area was the subpapillary venous plexus histologically because the depth for receiving reflectance is about 1.0 mm from the sole skin surface. One series observations was divided into five steps depending on the modes of combination of the ap plied pressure to ankle cuff and tilting. The Kubelka-Munk equation was uti lized to calculate blood volume (Vb). It is concluded that the patients with ASO might have a dysfunction, not of the subpapillary venous plexus, but of the venular valve, whereas patients with TAO might have a dysfunction of both the subpapillary venous plexus and venu lar valve.
