BACKGROUND: Access to low-cost tactile displays that allow sliding contact between text and reading fingers remains a challenge for blind and visually impaired (BVI) users. This impedes the widespread learning of braille and tactile reading. Previous work demonstrated a high accuracy in the tactile reading of braille and raised print presented at varying refresh rates. OBJECTIVE: This work compares the most suitable spacing between embossed characters on a sliding contact tactile display for the accurate reading of words. METHODS: Two discs, differing in inter-character spacing (ICS), embossed with braille on one side and raised print on the reverse side are used here. MNREAD sentences are read for a period of 5 minutes by 17 participants, who are visually impaired, using both discs. RESULTS: The results show that an ICS of 8 mm is sufficient for reading braille with a low percentage error rate of 6.4. However, an ICS of 8 mm does not allow similar rates while reading raised print. A shearing‐motion‐type microelectromechanical system (MEMS) tactile display mechanism was fabricated to provide a shear vibration stimulus to the fingertip. It consisted of shrinking shape memory alloy (SMA) thick‐film actuators and a supporting coil spring array. The SMA actuator array was designed and fabricated using a flash‐evaporated SMA film (10 μm thick) on a mirror‐polished Cu substrate. The coil spring was successfully arrayed on a glass substrate with an SU‐8 circular array pattern. The glass substrate with the coils was bonded to the SMA substrate to complete the shearing‐motion mechanism. During the bonding process, the SMA actuators were initially elongated by the coil springs. The generated amplitude and force of the fabricated mechanism were characterized when the SMA actuator was heated by applying a pulsed current to be shrank by the shape recovery effect. The fabricated shearing‐motion mechanism successfully generated large amplitude of 41 μm (around 80 μm in reciprocal motion) and force of 22 mN at a driving frequency of 1 Hz. At 20 Hz, an amplitude of 23 μm and force of 10 mN were obtained even though they were reduced owing to the low thermal response. Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery enables surgeons to tele-perform elaborate surgical operations to patients with less damage and pain. Besides force feedback provided by the surgical robot to the surgeon, touching sensations are also important for the surgeon to acquire the complete conditions of the patient. Thus, tactile display devices are crucial elements in surgical robots. Meanwhile, various sensations of magnetorheological (MR) fluid can be provided to human fingers because its stiffness, elasticity, and viscosity can be controlled by applied magnetic field. Therefore, in this paper, a new tactile display device based on MR fluid is proposed. This device has high magnetic conduction efficiency, less magnetic leakage, no MR fluid leakage, and overcomes the major drawbacks of the existing tactile display devices based on MR fluid in literatures. Firstly, the design of the tactile display device is described in detail, followed by its fabrication and assembling methods. Secondly, the working current range of the tactile display device is determined by using electromagnetic finite element method (FEM) simulation. Thirdly, the mathematical model to characterize the compression and shear behaviors of the tactile display device is developed. Then, the tactile display device is tested in terms of normal and shear contact forces, followed by its elastic and shear moduli analysis. Finally, the unknown parameters in the mathematical model are figured out, and the model is validated by using structural FEM simulation. The experimental results show that the elastic and shear modulus range of the proposed tactile display device are respectively 3–7.5 kPa and 1.4–5.0 kPa, which can cover the mechanical properties of various human viscera. Tactile rendering is a promising technology that is necessary to integrate into virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and even metaverse environments. One of the key technologies for realizing tactile rendering is a reproduction or a display of tactile sensation. This study developed a model that generates an appropriate input signal to an ultrasonic tactile display using a conditional generative adversarial network. Sensory evaluation scores and vibration data acquired by a tactile sensor were used as training data for the conditional generative adversarial network-based models. In this study, different cluster analysis conditions were used to create the input information for the models. Each model generated the input signals for an ultrasonic tactile display, and the accuracy of the models was evaluated through sensory evaluation experiments. The results showed that model accuracy improved with moderate cluster classification and that the reproducibility of tactile sensation created with the models developed in this study was improved when compared with the reproducibility of tactile sensation created without the models.

Laparoscopic surgery (LS) is a minimally invasive technique that offers many advantages over traditional open surgery: it reduces trauma, scarring, and shortens recovery time. However, an important limitation is the loss of tactile sensations. Although some progress has been made in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RMIS) setups, RMIS is still not widely accessible. This review aims to identify which tactile display technologies have been proposed and experimentally validated for the restoration of tactile sensations during conventional laparoscopic surgical tasks. We conducted a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We identified relevant articles published over the past 10 years through a search on Web of science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore Digital, and PubMed repositories. A total of 143 articles met the inclusion criteria and 24 were included in the final review. From the reviewed articles, we classified the proposed tactile displays into two categories based on the use of skin contact: (i) skin tactile displays, which include vibrotactile, skin-indentation, and grip-feedback devices, and (ii) non-contact tactile displays based on visualization tools. This survey aims to contribute to further research in the area of tactile displays for laparoscopic surgery by providing a better understanding of the current state of the art and identifying the remaining challenges.

Social touch is essential to human development and communication. Mediated social touch is suggested as a solution for circumstances where distance prevents skin-to-skin contact. However, past research aimed at demonstrating efficacy of mediated touch in reducing stress and promoting helping have produced mixed findings. These inconsistent findings could possibly be due to insufficient control of contextual factors combined with unnatural interaction scenarios. For example, touch occurs less frequently among strangers and is often accompanied with nonverbal visual cues. We investigated how visual presentation of touch, and interpersonal relationship to the sender influence perception, affective experiences, and autonomic responses the touch evoke. Fifty couples of mixed gender were recruited. A mediated touch was repeatedly applied by either the male partner or male confederate to female participants. The latter witnessed through a webcam as the sender caressed a rubber hand or touchpad to send the touch. Following our hypotheses, touch sent by one's partner was perceived softer and more comforting than stranger touch. The partner's touch also resulted in weaker skin conductance responses, particularly when sent by touching a touchpad. In sum, how a mediated touch is experienced depends both on who is touching, and on how the touch is visually represented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deducing the input signal for a tactile display to present the target surface (i.e., solving the inverse problem for tactile displays) is challenging. We proposed the encoding and presentation (EP) method in our prior work, where we encoded the target surface by scanning it using an array of piezoelectric devices (encoding) and then drove the piezoelectric devices using the obtained signals to display the surface (presentation). The EP method reproduced the target texture with an accuracy of over 80% for the five samples tested, which we refer to as replicability. Machine learning is a promising method for solving inverse problems. In this study, we designed a neural network to connect the subjective evaluation of tactile sensation and the input signals to a display; these signals are described as time-domain waveforms. First, participants were asked to touch the surface presented by the mechano-tactile display based on the encoded data from the EP method. Then, the participants recorded the similarity of the surface compared to five material samples, which were used as the input. The encoded data for the material samples were used as the output to create a dataset of 500 vectors. By training a multilayer perceptron with the dataset, we deduced new inputs for the display. The results indicate that using machine learning for fine tuning leads to significantly better accuracy in deducing the input compared to that achieved using the EP method alone. Braille is one of the most popular mediums of education for the blind. However, learning braille requires trainers and a lot of practice. Additionally, different individuals have different levels of tactile sensitivity at their fingertips. The tactile components get often overlooked in most braille learning devices and related studies. Our solution is a single cell refreshable braille display with six custom-made electromechanical flapper actuators. It incorporates speech functionalities to facilitate self-learning and independent operation. The cell size can be adjusted according to the learner's preference by moving the actuators. The device can provide standard braille cell dimensions and elevation as well. It is designed to help learners with different tactile perceptions improve themselves through practice and adapt to standard size braille. The operational conditions and force analysis of the braille dots were performed. Two tests were also performed with two different cell sizes to evaluate the device with several blind students. Nowadays, improving the traffic safety of visually impaired people is a topic of widespread concern. To help avoid the risks and hazards of road traffic in their daily life, we propose a wearable device using object detection techniques and a novel tactile display made from shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators. After detecting obstacles in real-time, the tactile display attached to a user's hands presents different tactile sensations to show the position of the obstacles. To implement the computation-consuming object detection algorithm in a low-memory mobile device, we introduced a slimming compression method to reduce 90% of the redundant structures of the neural network. We also designed a particular driving circuit board that can efficiently drive the SMA-based tactile displays. In addition, we also conducted several experiments to verify our wearable assistive device's performance. The results of the experiments showed that the subject was able to recognize the left or right position of a stationary obstacle with 96% accuracy and also successfully avoided collisions with moving obstacles by using the wearable assistive device. The tactile information to be presented to a user during interaction with a virtual object is calculated by simulating the contact between the object model and user model. In the simulation, a distributed force is applied to the contact area on the skin tissue of users’ hands and results in deformation of the skin tissue. The skin deformation caused by the distributed force is the target contact state that should be presented by the device. However, most multipoint haptic displays do not have sufficient degrees of freedom (DoF) to represent the target contact state. This paper presents the concept and formulation of “deformation matching,” whereby the output force is calculated to minimize the error between the target skin deformation and skin deformation that can be realized by the limited DoF device's output force. For comparison, the conventional concept of “force matching” was also formulated. The difference in human perception between these two concepts in the expression of friction was investigated through experiments using a pin-array tactile display capable of stimulating 128 points. It was demonstrated that the perception of the friction coefficient was more sensitive and the perception of the friction direction was more accurate in deformation matching than in force matching. Development of haptic interfaces to enrich augmented and virtual reality with the sense of touch is the next frontier for technological advancement of these systems. Among available technologies, electrotactile stimulation enables design of high-density interfaces that can provide natural-like sensation of touch in interaction with virtual objects. The present study investigates the human perception of electrotactile sensations on fingertips, focusing on the sensation localization in function of the size and position of reference electrode. Ten healthy subjects participated in the study, with the task to mark the sensations elicited by stimulating the index fingertip using an 8-pad electrode. The test systematically explored several configurations of the active (position) and reference (position and size) electrode pads. The results indicated that there was a spreading of perceived sensations across the fingertip, but that they were mostly localized below the active pad. The position and size of the reference electrode were shown to affect the location of the perceived sensations, which can potentially be exploited as an additional parameter to modulate the feedback. Haptic display transfers the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user. This article presents a novel bidirectional haptic display responsive to touch. The device is composed of a flexible tactile sensor and tactile actuator, and the actuator is actuated according to the touch signals from the tactile sensor. The tactile sensor is a thin array of resistive type sensors that covers the top of the soft dielectric elastomer actuator array. The tactile sensor measures the normal forces (0 $-$ 6 $N$) and positions of touches and then sends these signals to control the corresponding tactile actuator cells. The tactile actuator works within the frequency range of 0 $-$ 300 Hz, provides up to 520 $\mu \text{m}$ of displacement and, 600 mN of normal force, much greater than the human hand threshold (50 mN). And thus, the device can transfer different feelings to users. In this research, we develop and evaluate a stand-alone bidirectional haptic display. Hand reaching is a complex task that requires the integration of multiple sensory information from muscle, joints and the skin, and an internal model of the motor command. Recent studies in neuroscience highlighted the important role of touch for the control of hand movement while reaching for a target. In this article, present a novel device, the HaptiTrack device, to physically decouple tactile slip motion and hand movements. The new device generates precisely controlled 2D motion of a contact plate, measures contact forces, and provides hand and finger tracking through an external tracking system. By means of a control algorithm described in this manuscript, the velocity of tactile slip can be changed independently from the velocity of the hand sliding on the device's surface. Due to these multiple features, the device can be a powerful tool for the evaluation of tactile sense during hand reaching movements in healthy and pathological conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This study proposes a haptic vest and a sensing glove for transferring the tactile information from the fingers to the back. We developed a haptic vest installed with 80 voice-coil type vibrators and a sensing glove that can detect up to 100 points of fingertip pressure distribution with an interval of 2 mm. We conducted perceptual experiments to evaluate the device performance and user experience. It was found that when the glove and haptic vest were used, the shapes of figures could be recognized correctly when compared to the case where only the glove was worn. Human fingertips are densely populated with tactile receptors and are hence incredibly sensitive. However, wearing gloves on the fingers drastically reduces the tactile information available to the fingertips, such as the texture and shape of the object, and makes it difficult to perform dexterous work. As a solution, in this study, we developed a high-resolution haptic vest that transfers the tactile sensation of the fingertips to the back. The haptic vest contains 80 voice-coil type vibrators which are located at each of the two discrimination thresholds on the back and can be driven independently. The tactile sensation of the fingertips is transferred to the back using the developed haptic vest in combination with a sensing glove that can detect the pressure distribution on the finger skin at up to 100 points. Different experiments were conducted to validate the performance of the proposed haptic vest and sensing gloves. The use of the haptic vest and the sensing glove enabled the user to perceive the shape of a planar object more accurately when compared to the case where the user wore only the glove. In the electroadhesive frictional contact of a sliding fingerpad on a touchscreen, friction is enhanced by an induced electroadhesive force. This force is dominated by the frequency-dependent impedance behavior of the relevant electrical layers. However, many existing models are only valid at frequency extremes and use very simplified contact mechanical approaches. In the present paper, a RC impedance model is adopted to characterize the behavior in the relevant range of frequencies of the AC excitation voltage. It serves as an extension to the macroscopic model for electrovibration recently developed by the authors, which is based on several wellfounded approaches from contact mechanics. The predictions of the extended model are compared to recent experimental results and the most influential electrical and mechanical parameters are identified and discussed. We propose an electrostatic multi‐touch tactile display with a segmented electrode structure and electrode‐driving method for presentation of free‐shaped localized textures. Understanding the relationship between the displacement of the skin when tracing a textured object and the resulting subjective sensations is essential in designing tactile displays. Previous studies observed skin displacement using flat glass plates or uneven surfaces that do not optically interfere with finger surface observations. In contrast, no direct method for observing skin surface displacement on a texture exists. We propose a system that enables observation of the interaction between a textured surface and the skin of the finger using an index-matching technique. In the proposed system, a texture plate is immersed in oil having the same refractive index as the plate, and measurements are made when the interface is nearly optically transparent. Further, printed markers are attached to the skin of the finger, and their movements analyzed using an image-processing algorithm. The system enables spatial measurement of the skin shear and the vibration of the contact area. Evaluation experiments conducted on a 1D textured surface having a pitch of 0.6 mm verify the feasibility of the proposed system. Optical misalignment simulation results indicate that the system is slightly less accurate than type-I mechanoreceptors but can measure skin deformation on a texture and also observe it spatially and temporally. This paper presents the design and fabrication of a wearable tactile communication interface with vibrotactile feedback for assistive communication. The interface is based on finger Braille, which is a simple and efficient tactile communication method used by deafblind people. It consists of a flexible piezoresistive sensor and a vibrotactile actuator integrated together and positioned at the index, middle and ring fingers of both hands to represent the six dots of Braille. The sensors were made using flexible piezoresistive material whereas the actuator utilizes electromagnetic principle by means of a flexible coil and a tiny NdFeB permanent magnet. Both were integrated to realize a Bluetooth-enabled tactile communication glove which enables deafblind people to communicate using Braille codes. The evaluation with 20 end-users (10 deafblind and 10 sighted and hearing person) of the tactile interface under standardized conditions demonstrated that users can feel and distinguish the vibration at frequencies ranging from 10Hz to 200Hz which is within the perceivable frequency range for the FA-II receptors. The results show that it took non-experts in Braille within 25s and 55s to send and receive words like “BEST” and “JOURNAL”, with an accuracy of ~75% and 68% respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose an electromagnetic-based braille display that can represent two-dimensional information. The key principle is a flip-latch structure, which allows satisfying requirements of both protrusion force for braille recognition and low power consumption. A magnet-inserted flip-latch has an eccentric shape, and is driven by and flips over the protruded voice coil and pushing the braille pin. Then it acts as a latch to lock and maintain the pin protrusion without additional energy consumption. We manufacture braille display modules and arrange them into a braille display with a total of 192 pins (16 columns and 12 rows). The pin-to-pin spacing is 2.5 mm, and the thickness of the display is about 5.5 mm. Each pin can switch states in 5 ms of operating time with 1W of power. In this paper, we describe the design and operating mechanism of the proposed actuator and perform operation tests to obtain stable driving conditions for the display.
